DISABILITIES IMAGINING RE Possibilities

A Letter From The Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I am filled with immense pride and gratitude to lead The Arc Prince George’s County - the county’s largest, most comprehensive service provider - into an exciting new chapter. For over seventy years, we have been a beacon of hope, providing vital support and opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. This only has been possible through the unwavering trust and generous support of our community.

Today, we serve over 4,500 individuals and their families annually through our residential, community living, and medical daycare programs, including virtual workshops and events. As the demand for our services grows, so does our need to expand and adapt to an aging and increasingly diverse population.

We are embarking on a transformative journey, integrating technology, innovation, and inclusivity to reshape how people with IDD live as full members of our community. This vision is our strategic response to the evolving needs of those we serve.

Join us in creating a future where every individual we support can flourish within an inclusive, nurturing environment. Your involvement is crucial to making this vision a reality.

With deepest appreciation.

Who We Are

Before the 1950s, children with physical and mental challenges in Prince George’s County were often placed in institutions. In 1952, local families, determined to change this, founded The Association for Retarded Citizens in Prince George’s County, to provide supportive environments for these children. Over time, The Association led the shift from institutionalization to community-based programs, focusing on individual abilities and integration. Today, The Arc is a vital resource for all individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families, serving all nine council districts and supporting the area’s 42,277 residents with disabilities. The Arc’s mission has never been more critical.

I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of 9 months. Having a disability is a challenge I’ve dealt with my entire life. I am not able to walk, run, jump, dance, or have any free movement with my legs. I don’t like being boxed in by limitations. I had to choose to find joy in other areas of my life. I graduated high school with honors. I matriculated from Prince George’s Community College with a degree in public relations and journalism.

1985: The Association begins its highly successful Employment Services Program by placing thirteen individuals in seven different companies.

1992: The Association changes its name to “The Arc,” deleting the word “retarded” as a result of input from self-advocates.
