For the ancient Romans Lake Garda was a luxury summer destination with Roman ruins and mosaics in Sirmione and Desenzano to prove it. Long and slim Lake Garda is located in the north-east of Italy, stretching from north to south. The southern lakeshore is low, rolling land and fairly built-up. In contrast, the dramatic fjord-like northern end is surrounded by towering mountains and cliffs. Most of the lakeside towns are popular as holiday resorts; they differ in character but all are well-connected by boat services. Isola Del Garda is a beautiful private island which dates back to the Roman Empire. Three of Italy's 20 wine producing regions border Lake Garda. Each one uses grape varieties which are local to the region to produce a diverse range of red, white and rose wines. Malcesine is a picturesque town with cobblestone lanes and a striking castle on the edge of the water with the backdrop of Mont Baldo. Visit Castello Scaligero which was once a regal home or stroll through the medieval streets to the Palazzo Dei Capitani once the headquarters of the ruling Venetian elite.

Visit two cities that are home two very different kinds of music and history. New Orleans is world-renowned for its Jazz and Blues music, Creole cuisine, unique dialects, and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The historic heart of the city is the French Quarter, known for its French and Spanish Creole architecture and vibrant nightlife along Bourbon Street.
In the southwestern corner of Tennessee, across the Mississippi River with a view of Arkansas’ state line, lies the great city of Memphis. Beyond the music, there is the food and lots of it. BBQ is the name of the game when dining in the city, but soul food also reigns supreme with generational twists on home-style recipes that fuel the food scene. Gospel, Rock & Roll, Soul, Rockabilly and of course Elvis Presley have all combined to create the distinctive Memphis music tradition, a legacy still savoured by music lovers around the world. The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, Graceland and the Centre for Southern Folklore celebrates that rich legacy and makes fascinating places to visit during your time in Memphis. Encompassed within this trip is a wonderful seven-night sunshine Caribbean cruise on-board the ever popular Brilliance of the Seas.

Itinerary IV: New Orleans – Cozumel – Puerto Costa Maya – Belize City – New Orleans
Recently, we had the distinct pleasure of being a guest of Royal Caribbean for the naming ceremony of their latest marvel, Utopia of the Seas. As the second largest cruise ship in the world, Utopia is more than just a vessel, it’s a floating city, brimming with innovation, luxury, and entertainment. Being among the first to experience what this incredible ship has to offer was nothing short of exhilarating.
Upon arriving in Orlando, the excitement in the air was palpable. The Utopia of the Seas, towering majestically at Port Canaveral, was a sight to behold. The ship, with its 20 decks and capacity to carry nearly 10,000 people (including crew), is a true engineering masterpiece. The naming ceremony itself was a grand affair, filled with celebration and fanfare, setting the tone for the unforgettable adventure that awaited us onboard.
Stepping onto Utopia of the Seas for the first time felt like entering a world of endless possibilities. The ship’s design is a perfect blend of modern elegance and functionality, with every corner offering something new to discover. We were particularly impressed by the Royal Promenade, an expansive, vibrant thoroughfare that runs through the heart of the ship. Lined with shops, bars, and eateries, it’s a lively hub where guests can shop, dine, and socialise. The Celebration and Central Park neighbourhoods also stood out, offering a serene escape with lush greenery and a tranquil ambiance that made me forget I was on a ship.
One of the highlights of our time onboard was the opportunity to experience the various entertainment options Utopia has to offer. The AquaTheatre, with its breathtaking ocean views, hosted a spectacular show that combined acrobatics, high-diving, and synchronised swimming. The sheer talent and precision of the performers left me in awe. We also had the chance to try out the Ultimate Abyss, a thrilling 10-story slide that had my heart racing. For those seeking a more laid-back experience, the Solarium, an adults-only retreat, provided the perfect spot to relax and unwind.
Dining onboard Utopia of the Seas was an adventure in itself. The ship boasts an array of dining options, from casual bites at the Windjammer Marketplace to fine dining at Chops Grille. We particularly enjoyed trying Izumi, where the sushi and hibachi were nothing short of exceptional. Each meal was a delightful experience, with flavours and presentations that rivalled some of the best restaurants on land. Oh and you can eat in a train carriage too!
After exploring all that Utopia had to offer, we set sail for Royal Caribbean’s private island, CocoCay. Known as the “Perfect Day at CocoCay,” this island truly lives up to its name. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the island’s beauty and the range of activities available. The Thrill Waterpark, with its towering water slides and wave pool, was an adrenaline junkie’s dream. However, we opted for a more relaxed day (okay we did a couple of turns on
Utopia of the Seas is more than just a ship; it’s a destination in itself, offering something for everyone, from adventure seekers to those looking for relaxation
the waterslides first), starting with a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Chill Island, followed by lounging in a cabana at the exclusive Coco Beach Club. The overwater cabanas there are a slice of paradise, offering breathtaking views and unparalleled luxury.
The island’s culinary offerings were also impressive, with a variety of beachside dining options. We enjoyed a delicious, freshly grilled meal at the Skipper’s Grill, where the tropical ambiance and ocean views added to the experience.
As the trip came to an end, we couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experience Royal Caribbean provided. Utopia of the Seas is more than just a ship; it’s a destination in itself, offering something for everyone, from adventure seekers to those looking for relaxation. Coupled with the stunning beauty and endless activities at CocoCay, this trip was truly a perfect blend of luxury and excitement.
If you’re considering a cruise that offers both cutting-edge experiences and breathtaking destinations, Utopia of the Seas should be at the top of your list. Royal Caribbean has once again set the bar for what a cruise vacation can be, and I can’t wait to see what’s next on the horizon.

Cunard Queen Mary 2 / Queen Elizabeth • 13-18 Nights • November 2024–December 2026 • Prices from £1499pp The Finest Traditions At Sea
A Caribbean cruise on board a Cunard Queen is a special treat contrasting the elegance, formal and sophistication with the down-right relaxed, loose and carefree. This creates a unique sunshine holiday experience steeped in tradition not found anywhere else. Unlike all other ships Cunard gives you a lot more space with less passengers on-board enjoying an unusual amount of outdoor deck space by day and high-quality dining and entertainment by night.
The allure of this is simply irresistible without the crowds, the gimmicks, the fuss and the noise of other ships. A successful beach day on board can be marked by the sail-away party on the Terrace or Lido pool deck at the back of the ship as the last Caribbean Island disappears in front of a setting sun and behind the wake of the ship. Crack open a bottle of champagne, sip a cocktail or a Pimm’s and revel in the orange and purple hues of the Caribbean sunset before heading back to your stateroom to dress for dinner. Or opt for a casual bite in the Kings Court or Lido Buffet.
