The early years of Jetbest Group, formerly known as J E Tipper and Sons (Growers’ Agents), are rooted in the late 1930s when John Edward ‘Jack’ Tipper acquired Tippers Corner, a general store in Brisbane’s Milton suburb.
In 1940, Jack ventured into the Roma Street Markets in Brisbane’s CBD, establishing himself as a key wholesaler. His sons, Ted, and John Junior joined him after serving in the Australian Army during World War II. In 1946, the company officially became J E Tipper and Sons, and it continued to expand during the 1950s by acquiring additional sections in the Roma Street Markets.
Ernie Wood, who joined the company in 1950, played a pivotal role in its development. In 1964, the company became a founding agent at the new Fruit and Vegetable Central Market in Rocklea, eventually expanding its presence there.
The company has endured challenges, including floods in 1974 ,2011, and 2022 and transitions in leadership. Ernie Wood took over as General Manager in 1986, with David Wood and David Davies eventually purchasing the company to current CEO Steve Barnes leading a motivated and dynamic team.
Expansion into Sydney and diversification efforts, such as the Tropical Fruit Direct joint venture and the acquisition of Beemart Enterprises in 2020, further shaped the company’s growth.
Jetbest Group, built on principles of professionalism and personal integrity, continues to evolve, and seize opportunities in the ever-changing landscape of the fruit and vegetable industry, staying true to its roots while embracing the future.
The Jetbest group has pioneered fresh fruit marketing in key wholesale markets in Australia through innovative programs that add value at every step of the supply chain for Growers, Retailers and Customers.
We have brought together Australia’s largest expert group of pawpaw and papaya growers in the ground-breaking Jetbest program that transformed the marketing of tropical fruit in Australia. Our diversified grower base ensures consistency of supply throughout the year and buffers market impacts due to regional variations and natural disasters, ensuring stable pricing and long-term customer relationships.
