The second step of the 3 Rs

JHS SUSTAINABILITY WHAT AND WHERE CAN I RECYCLE ON CAMPUS? The mixed recycling shown at right can go in your classroom bin or green rolling bin. In addition, Jesuit recycles the following three items at Far West Recycling in Beaverton: • Batteries: please separate disc and rechargeable batteries in provided containers around campus. • Plastic Film: Must be clean. No crinkly plastic. Plastic film stretches if you try to push your finger through it. • Plastics #1-7: Any plastic containing the numbers 1-7 can be recycled. There are TWO recycling "stations" on campus: 1. Faculty Workroom (under sink) 2. Faculty Lunch room (under microwaves) Jesuit staff delivers recyclables to Far West Recyclables (FWR) on Denny Road in Beaverton. Check their website for other accepted items.

Sustainability Q&A

WHAT EXACTLY IS A ZERO WASTE LIFESTYLE?

Q: Can I recycle my old planner with plastic binding?

Learn how one college student produced only a jar of garbage in a year. Lauren Singer’s TEDx YouTube Video is inspirational. Learn more about a Zero Waste lifestyle by looking at the blog that inspired Lauren. If you want to learn more, check with our very own Scott Powers. A few years ago, he and his family of four only ONE garbage can over the course of an entire year!

THE 3 Rs: HOW TO REUSE ON CAMPUS OFFICE SUPPLIES: If you need a 3-ring binder, paper, pencils or anything else stop by the faculty work room. You can also donate unused supplies there too. The DeSmet office also has a large supply of 3-ring binders in all sizes. Check with Joahnna Salvan or Nancy Martin if you would like one.

ONE-SIDED PAPER: The faculty work room has plenty of onesided paper. Feel free to take this and reuse it! Please note, though, that IT has requested we not run those sheets through the printer a second time.

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE All are welcome at our December meeting: Tues 12/6 @ 2:45pm in the Bachhuber Conference Room

A: Only if you first remove the plastic coated front and rear covers. In an ideal world, it is best to tear out the paper pages and throw away the plastic binding separately. We are looking into more sustainable options for the future.
