Ceramic House Problem: Create an addition to an existing early-20th century home occupied by a ceramicist and his wife. The program of the addition should include studio, office and gallery spaces.

8 Ceramic House Solution: To connect to the existing house, I decided to extend the original house by creating a slim connector from the existing house to the addition which would allow a maximum amount of light to enter the structures. The connector served as the main hub for movement throughout the two buildings. Light was always a considerable factor, involving the creation of many skylights and windows. Conscious decisions were made and the amount of glazing and the materials to create different facades for the public and private sides of the addition.

14 Natural Pools Solution: Created a system of connected pools using the slope of the site to control the flow through them. Designed a Facilities building to house concessions, changing rooms, and a front office with additional outdoor seating space. Lastly, used the remaining available space ont he site to create a B | View from Patio A | Facilities Building Exterior dog park and an open recreational space for the surrounding residential area. Fabric Facade Problem: A building sited on the well-known and highly trafficked Rittenhouse Square park retains its original late-19th century facade despite havinga new residential tower built behind it. Design a new facade that responds to the retail and residential programs, as well as the park visitors while also meeting high performance guidelines.

18 Fabric Facade Solution: With a team, created a tensile-fabric woven inner skin as part of a double skin facade. The double layer of glazing serves to regulate the environmental conditions, and the fabric allows for sunlight management and privacy of residential spaces.

OPERABLE LIGHTWELLS AND AIRVENTS

1. DOUBLE SKIN A double skin of Low E Double Pane Glass creates a full height buffer zone for insulating the interiors. The double skin employs techniques of the stack effect in the summer. A mechanically operated vent opens and hot air is pushed up and out through pressure differences.

2. FABRIC LOUVERS Stretched PTFE Fabric is spaced and dimensioned for sun blocking in the summer and for solar gains in the winter. The fabric emits a low level of diffuse light, for interior spaces to benefit from daylight and avoid solar glare.

3. STEPPED FLOORS The retail spaces are open to the public and encased only in glass. The ground and second floor retail spaces are stepped back to benefit from shade in the summer.

Mechatronic in Philadelphia Problem: Beginning with everyday objects, design an object inspired by the mechanisms in these objects. Then, with this process, design a building with a program in Northeast Philadelphia that utilizes the dynamic concepts learned. Use Rhino and Grasshopper to model mechanical operations along with an Arduino and simple machines.

22 Mechatronics Solution: Worked with a team and our two objects: a mechanical ice cream scoop and a walking bug toy to first design a responsive chair. Once the body weight of the user was placed upon the seat, the arms and back would respond by raising to meet the user. Finally, we took the concept of the four-bar linkage and created a swaying and then a crumpling building, with an outer skin that would respond to the inner changes of the structure.
