Brexit: MPs hear plea to protect NI family farms

Northern Ireland’s farmers need certainty soon on the future of the industry after Brexit, a committee of MPs has been told. Representatives the main agriculture sectors gave evidence to Westminster's Northern Ireland Affairs committee sitting at Stormont on Monday. It is holding an inquiry into the impact of Brexit on farming. Farmers spoke of the opportunities and challenges presented by the biggest change for farming in a generation. the concern, it’s the uncertainty around that,” he said. Image caption Farmers heard an impassioned plea that family farms on marginal grounds be protected Six farmers gave evidence from the arable, horticulture, pig, poultry, beef and sheep and dairy sectors. MPs were told how unfettered access to the GB market

was “key” to sectors such as pigs and poultry and there were opportunities for greater expansion there. But the politicians were also told how 30% of Northern Ireland milk crosses the border for processing and EU markets were important especially for sheep sales. They were presented with issues which farmers believed were holding back the

industry in Northern Ireland, including the “gold-plating” of regulations by officials and problems obtaining planning permission because of ammonia concerns. Poultry producer Thomas Douglas from Dungannon said when it came to planning it was taking up to two years for some farmers to get a decision - something he described as “crazy”.

MPs also heard an impassioned plea for any future policy to protect family farms on marginal ground and prevent land abandonment.Peter Gallagher, a beef and sheep farmer, from the Fermanagh border was asked whether he foresaw any problems with cross-border trade. “The problem is we don’t know whether it’s going to be a problem and that’s

A A union is encouraging farmers to wear a helmet when using quads and other ATVs as Farm Safety Week gets underway. Quad bikes can be a useful piece of equipment on any farm, allowing farm workers quick and easy access to parts of the farm which otherwise could be a time-consuming hassle.

But when it is not used properly or with the appropriate safety equipment, in particular a helmet, it can lead to serious injury and even death. Over the last year, Emma Harper MSP has worked along side NFU Scotland in the pursuit of encouraging farmers to wear a helmet when using quads and other ATVs which included a recent Parliamentary motion on the subject. It is now NFU Scotland policy that no images which show someone using a quad bike without a helmet can be published for any reason, in the hopes to change the public image of quad safety.

Injuries caused by improper use of equipment remains one of the main causes of accidents on Scotland’s farms and crofts. On Day Three of Farm Safety Week (16-20 July), father and daughter duo Jimmy and Carol-Anne Warnock re-call how they discovered farm safety the hard way, as CarolAnne had a birthday she’ll never forget. 'Memory loss' Jimmy, who along with Carol-Anne farms Sandilands Farm in Lanark, explains what happened on January 3. “We had already drawn some lambs in to go to the market

and we were going up to the other farm to draw more of them in and tag them,” he said. “When Carol-Anne was tagging the first lot, she came out, jumped on the trailer with the dog which attached to my quad bike. On our way to the second lot, the trailer jumped off the ball of the bike. At the time Carol-Anne was standing on the drawbar and she went straight onto the tarmac road, hitting her head.” Carol-Anne suffered facial injuries. She broke her cheekbone, jawbone, teeth and suffered memory loss. “She didn’t have any recollection of what had happened. When the paramedics arrived on scene they sedated Carol-Anne and took her by air ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow,” Jimmy added. “She was in hospital for a total of 12 days. Initially Carol-Anne was operated on and then she returned home. However, she was resubmitted after catching an infection appeared around her wounds.

“It tends to be the person driving the quad who wears the helmet, and unfortunately for Carol-Anne on this occasion she was the one who was exposed and suffered the consequences,” he said. 'One seat, one bum' Although Carol-Anne’s injuries were serious, she should make a full recovery. This being said, Jimmy admits it was an entirely avoidable accident. He said it is important to remember the "one seat, one bum" rule when using an ATV vehicle. If there is only one seat, it is because only one person should be on the vehicle. Carol-Anne’s injuries were severe, but the outcome could have been much worse. The injuries suffered during this incident highlight just how dangerous an ATV accident can be, and just how important it is for anyone driving one to wear a helmet at all times and not to carry passengers in a trailer.

T There are few people in the country, or even the world, who can claim they have never had any kind of back pain. There are fewer still who can claim all their symptoms have been eradicated with just three or four treatments. While some believe it is part of the human condition to endure discomfort - believing that the complexity of the spine must mean complications - it is fact that the spine is the centre of everything we do. So keeping it in good order is essential to our quality of life. Because it is a delicate structure, it doesn't take much to put the spine out of place - as Financial Times journalist, Ben Hunt, found out to his cost. A youthful surfing accident left him with a slipped lumbar disc. He had to abandon his favourite sports and his quality of life was restricted - until he finally found a cure that required no fuss, no surgery and no extended treatment or costs. In an article he wrote: "I stopped believing there was a solution to my problem and that my only option was to manage the pain. He was offered the opportunity to try out new machine, designed by two engineers to help mobilise the spine

and therefore alleviate pain. Ben was so astounded by the results - being immediately released from back pain and associated discomfort in his leg (and also enjoying a full night's sleep for the first time in years) - that he decided to abandon scepticism and continue the treatment. He was put in contact with Surreybased osteopath Irene Phillips, founder of the Backcare Clinic and the first UK osteopath to use this style of equipment - now marketed as Theraflex. She said: "Usually we see results within 3-5 treatments. The machine works on the same principle as physiotherapy and osteopathy but the bionic fingers can apply more pressure than real fingers because they move 25 times faster." Irene added that it is common for people to give up on their back pain, thinking it is something they just have to live with. "We often hear people talking about managing their discomfort rather than trying to get rid of it. We have had some exceptional results and in over 95% of cases can improve the condition drastically with just 3-5 sessions."

Irene is something of a pioneer in her industry as she was also the first osteopath to use another piece of technological wizardry called the spinal mouse - now used by the Nuffield Hospital group as part of their health screening. The mouse is not unlike that you might find attached to a home computer and it can monitor flexibility and strength of the spine - and any improvements made through treatment. It is often used in conjunction with the mechanical unit to establish a diagnosis and record improvements along the way. "Back pain can be debilitating and many people live with it believing there to be no real solution. Our results show that we can offer speedy and measurable results." Sessions are around Ă‚ÂŁ50 each and can often be reclaimed as the Backcare Clinic is fully recognised by leading medical insurers including BUPA. For further details on the Theraflex machine visit www.theraflex.info, or for the spinal mouse www. idiag.ch. To contact Irene email backcareclinic@yahoo.com or call 0208 335 3787. ips for ps for ing dogs ng dogs

From pooches to puppies, Dobermans and Great Danes to Labradoodles and Corgis, Britain is a bona fide nation of animal lovers, and K9s are one of our favourites of all pets. It’s just a shame so many people have such difficulty keeping their furry friends under control. Shocking stories about dogs gone wild aside, it’s safe to say that the vast number of owners do struggle to keep their best friend in check at all times. This is unsurprising, because irrespective of how housebroken they are, we’re still talking about a species of animal here, with wildly different behavioural and social tendencies than we two-legged creatures have instilled into ourselves. As such, if they want to run off and chase that bird, then chances are they will try to do just that. It’s in their nature. Nevertheless, a poorly trained dog is no good, and can easily become something of an embarrassment. Whether that’s going to the toilet in inappropriate places or running riot in the pub, there’s no denying we’ve all seen it happen, and as any expert will tell you, the solution isn’t particularly easy. Successfully passing on obedience and good behaviour takes time and commitment, but don’t be put off - follow these simple rules and you won’t go too far wrong...

Show them what it means to be a good leader

Dogs are highly perceptive and have a pack mentality. Set an example for how you want the animal to behave, in order for them to learn and replicate that

Walks must involve discipline

Particularly important with puppies. In order to ensure your hound doesn’t wind up wrecking the house when nobody is watching, start the day with a disciplined walk, enough to let them work off some energy without returning over-excited. It’s also a good idea to walk out of the house ahead of your dog when setting off, so as to show it who’s boss.

Understand your breed

Partly thanks to man’s penchant for and understanding of a dog’s ability to work, each breed has a host of different personality traits and attributes. It’s vital that you understand these in order to successfully train and balance your pet.

Allow time for mental exercises, every day

Here’s where you can make a dog appreciate rules, boundaries and restrictions. Simply giving them a physical run-about isn’t enough - their minds need to be stimulated in order to take on board the instructions you’re giving them.

Assign your dog a task before it gets a treat

It’s no good rewarding the animal for doing nothing if you want to perfect training. By giving it something to do before offering a tasty snack, drink or toy, man’s best friend begins to understand that enjoyable things don’t come for free.

‘Hens Change Pet Pecking Order’ Britain is renowned as a nation of animal lovers but it seems one feathery species is pushing the traditional dog and cat favourites into the shade. The popularity of chickens is evident in a 25% increase in feed sales across the UK in the last two years and a surge in demand for feeders and accessories. And the National Farmers Union’s Poultry Board says an estimated three million hens are now being kept in people’s back yards as these feathery friends increasingly prove their credentials as family pets. Egg laying hens are one of the few types of farm animal in the UK that, on some farms, are still kept in close-confinement cage systems for all of their productive lives. Around 32 million egg-laying hens were reared in the UK in 2011, of which around 49% - around 16 million - were kept in cages. This has decreased from about 70% a decade ago because increasingly people are choosing eggs from hens kept in higher-welfare alternative systems, such as barn or free-range. Although the design of battery cages changed by law across Europe in 2012, from the barren to the so-called ‘enriched’ battery cage, welfare campaigners are still very concerned that hens can’t carry out all of their important natural behaviours properly in such an environment. Animal charities want to see all laying hens kept in well-managed free-range or barn systems instead and are working hard to try to improve the conditions in which hens are reared, transported and slaughtered/killed, and to get better laws to protect them. Chris Gordon, technical cirector at Dodson & Horrell’s feed specialist, says: “We used to find that chickens were limited to farms or smallholdings and in the gardens of those living in the country but now it’s increasingly common for chickens to reside in backyards in our towns and cities.” “As well as demand for chicken feed and accessories increasing, we also hear lots of anecdotal evidence to suggest that chickens are fast becoming a viable option when people are choosing pets along with traditional choices like dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.” Hens are naturally inquisitive animals with a strong desire to perch, preen themselves, dustbathe, forage and nest. To help chicken lovers bring these clucking friends into their lives, Dodson & Horrell has these top 10 tips and facts: * Scrupulous cleanliness is the key. Birds need regular worming and the house needs spraying against red mite. * Be sure to feed your chickens an appropriate food for laying hens but do not over-feed. More feed does not equal more eggs and a fat bird readily succumbs to liver disease and can become too fat to lay. * Birds are thirsty animals so clean water must be continually available. * Shut your chickens in at night so they don’t get attacked by foxes. * To achieve good laying buy a ‘pullet’, a young domestic hen. * Birds should have good housing, one to four square feet per bird, and a fresh run area where they can peck and forage. Include a dust bath, sand, ash box or a half square foot pit per bird. * A good, well kept chicken will produce between 150 and 250 eggs per year. * Bantams are essentially scaled down versions of the hybrid hen, lay smaller eggs and can be a sound option if space is limited. * Egg laying takes place when there is no cock bird (a male over 12 months old) present. Traditional breeds lay in spasms, basically enough to sit on at any one time. * Modern, developed (hybrid) birds are bred to lay almost continuously. Working Farmer | workingfarmer.co.uk |

endt IDEAL double winner of "2018 Machine of the Ye a r " "It's unusual for us specialist journalists to be able to award a combine harvester designed from a blank canvas," explains Matthias Mumme, Editor in Chief of traction, awarding the best combine harvester prize to the Fendt IDEAL. Developing the combine from scratch, its designers were able to get the machine's dimensions just right. The narrow vehicle frame of the IDEAL at just 1.40 m provides more space for even the widest tyre or crawler track options. And yet the Fendt IDEAL still complies with the current traffic regulations with maximum vehicle widths of below 3.30 m and 3.50 m. The jury's verdict was sealed with the number of other unique technologies such as the fully automated, realtime machine adjustment, new design of grain pan and 17,100-litre grain tank with an outstanding emptying speed of 210 litres per second.

And the customers agree with the jury: in the vote for the public’s favourite for “2018 Machine of the Year”, the Fendt came out top. Over 50,000 votes were cast online – most in favour of the Fendt IDEAL. “We are especially honoured to receive the farmers’ award and it shows us that with this new high-performance combine we are addressing people’s practical requirements”, says PeterJosef Paffen, Chairman of the AGCO/ Fendt Management Board. Fendt IDEAL combines will be ready for use next harvest.

Farmers should take responsibility for their safety, the chief executive of the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSE NI) has said. Keith Morrison wants more farmers to change their behaviour in an effort to prevent deaths on farms. Seven people were killed on NI farms in 2017, and there have been two deaths in the first six months of this year. As many as 100 people are injured on farms across Northern Ireland every month, said the HSE NI. Most accidents happen as a result of falls, livestock, slurry or incidents involving equipment. Since 2013, most fatal accidents on farms in Northern Ireland have involved equipment, resulting in 14 deaths, followed by 10 incidents involving animals. Most of the 33 people killed since 2013 have been farmers older than 65, although two have been children.

'Stop and think safe' While the number of deaths each year had dropped from 11 in 2012, Mr Morrison said "one death on a farm is far, far too many". Historically, farming has been the most dangerous occupation in Northern Ireland, said Mr Morrison.

safety", said Mr Morrison. Monday marks the start of a week-long campaign by the HSE NI to promote farm safety. Each day will focus on a different area, including:

While most farmers were careful, he said it was important they did not slip into an "it'll never happen to me" mentality.

Farm safety inspections Child safety on farms Farmers' mental health Mr Morrison urged farmers to be proactive about farm safety, rather than waiting for tragedy to strike.

"We've seen a number of fatalities around farming activity, such as construction work on farms, or more recently road incidents," he said.

"Unfortunately, I have seen too many families that have been struck by tragedy and they've lost loved ones, and they get it," he said.

The HSE NI has run a highprofile TV campaign in recent years, encouraging farmers and farm workers to "stop and think safe" when working on the farm.

"It's moved from head knowledge to heart knowledge because they've been struck, and I can't believe that it will take a tragedy for farmers to get it from their head to their heart.

This was aimed at making people more aware of the dangers, but more importantly on changing their behaviour, "to actively do something and take responsibility for their own health and their own

"I'm asking what will it take for them to think carefully about that and make those changes?"

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

A

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. Find out more by visiting the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk Duncan Russell NSTS Manager October 2016

N New Land Rover film tells story of 13yr old Blake Harris and his once-in-a-lifetime adventure with Global Adventurer Bear Grylls Blake Harris endured a tough start to life with Autism and helping his mother look after his terminally ill sister A one-off camouflaged Discovery created to take Blake on a surprise adventure from the annual Hay literary Festival Surprise adventure reveals Blake’s determination, resilience and Above and Beyond spirit Watch it at: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=s8xxjZznT2E&feature=youtu.be Hay-on-Wye, 7 June 2018. In Land Rover’s 70th year, Hay Festival 2018 played the backdrop to a very special surprise for a young boy who truly went Above and Beyond for his family. 13 year old Scout Blake Harris known as ‘Baby Bear’ from Worcester attended Hay Festival over the late May bank holiday weekend expecting to watch his hero Bear Grylls talk at the annual literary festival. But Blake had the surprise of his life when his hero arrived in a bespoke camouflaged Land Rover Discovery bearing his name to take him on a mini adventure. The adventurers went off-roading to a secret wood where Grylls set up a bespoke shelter for Blake to light a fire, scavenge maggots for a tasty afternoon snack and get to grips with a catapult. The surprise was planned by Bear himself, supported by Land Rover and Blake’s mother Liz. The goal was to honour Blake’s brave spirit and dedication to his sister Lily-Mai who is diagnosed with a terminal cancer. Blake also suffers from autism which went undiagnosed for many years all of which has lead Blake to encounter tough episodes in life. Grylls said: “Wow. It’s not often you get to hang out with such a special young man who has had to deal with so many difficulties in life. He embodies that Above and Beyond spirit and never gives up which makes him an example to us all. “It has been such a privilege to spend this time with Blake. He is a credit to his family and the Scouts. Keep going buddy!” Blake Harris said: “I couldn’t believe that Bear was there in a Land Rover designed just for me. To have some time with the Chief Scout and learn lessons from how Bear has dealt with difficulties in his life is a once in a life-time opportunity. I will never forget the experience and it will motivate me for the future.” Liz Bishop, Blake’s mother said “I can’t thank Land Rover and Bear enough for an incredible day, I’ll never forget the surprise on Blake’s face when he realised Bear was there for him. I am sure the memories will provide huge amounts of motivation for the future.”

LAND ROVER CELEBRATES 70 YEARS WITH LARGEST EVER PARADE OF VEHICLES ON GOODWOOD HILL A record parade of 70 Land Rovers, from first prototypes to the latest Range Rover Sport SVR drove the Goodwood Festival of Speed hill in celebration of 70 years of Land Rover. The procession was led by a recreation of the very first Land Rover – a Centre Steer prototype – and ‘HUE 166’; the first Series I pre-production prototype from 1948. Showgoers were able to see all four generations of Range Rover, five generations of Discovery – including the millionth built – and each model in the current range. Round-the-world expedition cars, fire engines, police cars and ex-SAS vehicles all highlighted Land Rover’s dedication to adventure and go-anywhere capability Goodwood, Friday 13th July 2018 – A convoy of 70 rare and important Land Rovers stole the show at Goodwood Festival of Speed yesterday as part of a record parade up the famous Goodwood Hill, celebrating 70 years of Land Rover. The largest ever batch of vehicles to drive up the famous hill were led by a recreation of the very first Land Rover – a Centre Steer prototype – and ‘HUE 166’, the first Series I pre-production prototype from 1948. The Series I was such a success that it spawned the Series II and Series III, an example of which became the millionth Land Rover sold just 28 years after the very first prototype. That millionth

car also appeared in the parade, as part of a group of 25 early Series I, II and III vehicles including fire engines, SAS vehicles, aircraft crash rescue and African expedition heroes – demonstrating the breadth of versatility of Land Rover over the years. All four generations of Range Rover featured in the convoy, including a Trans-Americas Expedition example which crossed the all-but-impassable Darien Gap in 1971 and a 2004 example used by Cheshire Police. Also present was Land Rover’s Discovery nameplate showcased with an example of each of the five generations, including a round-the-world expedition car, the first Discovery ever built and the millionth Discovery to roll off the line. Representing Land Rover’s very latest crop of off-road vehicles was an example of each of the latest line-up; Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Evoque and Evoque Convertible. Jaguar Land Rover UK Sales Director, Scott Dicken said: “As we continue to celebrate Land Rover’s 70th Anniversary throughout 2018, today was a real highlight. The vast breadth of vehicles here from fire engines, tow trucks, to expedition vehicles demonstrated the capability that is core to Land Rover name. “I would like to express our gratitude to all the owners, collectors and enthusiasts who joined us today.”

LAND ROVER AND TERRY GRANT SMASH WORLD RECORD AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

L Land Rover and Terry Grant have smashed the Guinness World Record for the fastest mile in a car on two wheels at the weekend’s Goodwood’s Festival of Speed Terry’s 2:24.5 run was a highlight of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, set in a 575hp Range Rover Sport SVR that topped 60mph on the record-breaking run The Guinness World Record time – achieved in a last gasp attempt on Sunday afternoon – is an improvement of over 30 seconds on the old record, set by Terry Grant himself in 2011 Land Rover’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presence also included the largest single batch of cars to ever take on the hill, as 70 Land Rovers celebrated the brand’s 70th anniversary. Gaydon, Monday 16th July 2018 – Land Rover and Terry Grant smashed a world record at this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, with a two-wheel speed run in the new Range Rover Sport SVR. Terry’s 2:24.5 run up the famous hillclimb broke Terry’s old record for a mile travelled in a car on two wheels, set in 2011, by more than 30 seconds. Terry Grant flipped the Range Rover Sport SVR up on to two wheels with the use of a ramp, before hitting speeds of up 60mph on Goodwood’s famous hillclimb as he set the new Guinness World Record time. Terry snatched the record in a dramatic last gasp attempt on Sunday afternoon, having attempted four runs earlier in the weekend, none of which Terry

managed to complete. The Range Rover Sport SVR is a 575hp performance SUV, capable of 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 174mph – with four wheels on the road, at least. The Range Rover Sport only required one modification for the world record run, a tweak to its differential to allow the car to deliver more power to the two wheels on the ground – both of which will be pumped up to 90PSI. Terry Grant is a multiple world-record holder, with 25 Guinness World Records already to his name, and with this latest record, Terry has bested a 2:55 run that he himself set at Goodwood in 2011. Stunt Driver, Terry Grant, said: “It really shouldn’t be underestimated how difficult a two-wheeled speed run like this is; you are always fighting to keep the car balanced right on the edge, as it tries to tip either one way or the other. You need to be conscious of everything, from the camber of the road to the strength of the wind. Thankfully, conditions were excellent and the Range Rover Sport SVR was the perfect precision tool for the job.” The world record was not the only amazing Land Rover moment of the Festival of Speed, as 70 historic and important Land Rovers took to the hill on Thursday at 13:25 in what was the largest batch of cars to ever tackle the famous route in one go. From 1948, to 2018, the parade of cars celebrated 70 years of one of Britain’s most iconic automotive brands.

t,

CELEBRATING ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY, THE HILUX HAS PROVEN ITSELF THROUGH THE AGES TO BE A STALWART PICK-UP TRUCK. Toyota is celebrating 50 years of the Hilux, a pick-up trip that has proven itself to be a major stalwart in its type, thanks to its extremely impressive sturdiness and unmatched practicality. Over time, the Hilux has become synonymous with indestructible, as it can easily handle even the most treacherous of terrains from the slippery track of the Dakar Rally, to the frozen wilderness of the Northern and Southern poles. The origins of the Hilux can be traced back to 1968 at Hino Motors, who were seeking to build a vehicle that was more appealing to those in need of a vehicle that was durable yet comfortable. The first ever Hilux used a petrol powered, four-cylinder 1.5-Litre R-series engine, which produced enough power to allow people to effortlessly traverse all manner of terrain. As the years passed, the Hilux evolved to become more practical for every-day jobs, which saw it achieve success as an efficient family vehicle and eventually saw a double -cab variant being produced.

The Hilux found new popularity after it was featured prominently in the BBC motoring show Top Gear, where the Hilux’s reputation for being indestructible was put to the test. A heavily used, 1988 model Hilux was subjected to a series of gruelling trials which saw the pick-up truck being driven into the sea, being hit by a wrecking ball as well as having a caravan dropped on top of it. Despite all of this, the Hilux still managed to function after a short repair job with basic tools. Top Gear then tested a 2005 model Hilux by driving it to the centre of the Arctic. The Hilux would become the first motor vehicle to successfully make the journey, and it only required minor tweaking. Time and time again, the Hilux has proven itself to be a most worthy contender in the pick-up truck market. It has seen many iterations, with each new one making the Hilux more robust than the last. Only time will tell what exciting new innovations will come next.

T

oyo SUV and 4×4 Tyre Range A new year can mean only one thing as far as Toyo is concerned – new tyres, and 2018 promises to be a big one in terms of new offerings from the world’s foremost off-road tyre supplier. First up, the Open Country M/T, a tyre that’s been designed to be capable and versatile, and evidence of this can be found in its high turn-up, 3-Ply polyester casing. This sports hook shaped blocks and an ‘Attack’ tread design which equates to surprisingly civilised and stable road manners. Open, scalloped shoulder blocks bite into the ground and help to eject mud, snow, and rocks while maintaining off-road traction, whilst the ‘OverThe-Shoulder’ tread pattern (something of a Toyo calling card) offers unparalleled traction in deep mud and snow. Proven on the world’s competition stage, this tyre is the ultimate weapon in the war on poor grip and traction! This year sees the Toyo tyre range evolve yet further, with the ever popular Toyo H/T being replaced by the

U/T. It’s a tyre which builds upon its predecessor’s impressive spread of capabilities, namely an ability to provide optimal ride comfort, quiet performance and long wear life. That the U/T can deliver so much in so many areas is down to its symmetrical, non-directional tread design, not forgetting its variable pitch tread blocks, a trait which means a significant reduction in road noise. The U/T is every bit as capable when the going gets sloppy though, hence the pair of deep evacuation grooves running its length. These have been carefully optimised to expel standing water and rain at speed, which is brilliant news for those of us who regular encounter such conditions – anyone living in the UK, basically. Full depth sipes go right through the tyre, meaning that mud and snow grip is sustained throughout the wear life of the case. On the edges, multi-wave sipes give low-noise stability in all weathers, augmented by stability ribs in the centre of the tyre to help reduce irregular wear. Suitable for Pickup Trucks, Vans and SUVs, Open Country U/T offers high mileage while providing safe driving in both wet and

dry conditions. 2018 is set to be the year in which the Toyo Open Country AT Plus makes a dent in the off-road tyre market, with the company hoping to build upon the solid foundations laid in 2017, the tyre’s first full year on sale. An aggressive asymmetric tread pattern ticks both form and function boxes, with an open shoulder design allowing easy egress of water and superb stability under duress. Sipes have grooved bottoms to really ‘bite’ into snow and loose surfaces, with a waved pattern ensuring superb stability and exceptional traction. Toyo has long strived to offer a tyre for vehicles of all kinds, which is why it shouldn’t be all that surprising that its SUV range is just as comprehensive as its off-road. Indeed, the firm’s portfolio of tyres suitable for SUVs is unmatched in this sector, with the Proxes T1-Sport SUV and Proxes Sport SUV (dedicated variants of Toyo’s iconic T1 and Proxes Sport tyres) being two of the most capable. Toyo is also able to offer the CF2 SUV and Proxes S/T, both developed with Sports Utility Vehicles in mind and therefore as at home on the school run as they are the British B-road. These are provided to allow comparisons between vehicles and may not reflect your actual driving experience. From 1 September 2017, certain new vehicles will be type-approved using the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), which is a new, more realistic test procedure for measuring fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. From 1 September 2018 WLTP will fully replace the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), which is the current test procedure. Due to more realistic test conditions, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions measured under the WLTP are in many cases higher compared to those measured under the NEDC.
