A

AHDB Beef & Lamb is looking for research and industry collaborators to form a five-year Beef Knowledge Partnership focusing on key areas of beef production.

The aim of the £1.5 million project is to devise and implement a programme of research, development and knowledge exchange in two key areas: improving youngstock health and reducing losses due to poor health and disease during the production cycle improving efficiency in the use of feed and forages, including updating nutrition standards for beef cattle.

The AHDB Beef & Lamb programme will deliver focused, commercially-relevant, innovative research. The project will

also collect information on new technical developments, improved practices and emerging ideas from across the world.

An intensive programme of knowledge exchange will accelerate uptake by farmers, in order to prepare for the challenges facing beef producers in the years ahead.

Dr Mary Vickers, AHDB Beef & Lamb senior scientist, said: “Mortality and production loss due to disease have a significant impact on the bottom line, and reduce our competitiveness internationally. Increasing pressure to minimise antibiotic use across the livestock industry means that it is more important than ever to focus on proactive cattle health management.

“Food and forage use efficiency is another key factor in sustaining a

profitable beef system. Research on beef ration formulation is now 30 years old, so there is a real need for updating through new research.

“A partnership approach provides a flexible means for researchers and the beef industry to work collaboratively.

“The five-year term of the agreement means the work being undertaken can respond dynamically to new developments or emerging science.”

The Knowledge Partnership will be able to expand on existing AHDB collaborations and will be encouraged to access funding from other sources, such as UK Research Councils, Innovate UK and the industry, to add value to levy spend.

Brexit: NOAH’s priorities for the UK animal medicines sector

N

OAH has set out the priorities needed to deliver a thriving animal health sector following the UK’s exit from the EU.

Commenting after its Board meeting on 1 November, NOAH Chair Cat Sayer said: “The UK must continue to be a vibrant and innovative animal health market, providing opportunities for animal medicines businesses to thrive.

“We are in a strong position in the UK to be a global centre of excellence for animal medicines, supporting both innovative product developments and a regulatory model to benefit both local and international trade. We need to ensure that our industry’s needs and priorities are included in discussions on how the UK exit develops,” she said.

Following the UK’s exit from the EU, NOAH stresses the need to ensure that measures are in place to facilitate trade and innovation in the animal medicines sector. Future UK regulation

of veterinary medicines must incentivise product research and development – an environment where companies are encouraged to do business in the UK. “The health and welfare of British animals, as well as our public health and food safety need to be safeguarded – our vets and animal keepers need to continue to have access to a wide range of appropriate animal medicines.

“And we must not forget our people.

The animal medicines industry has many highly skilled roles. Businesses will continue to need to be able to recruit the best,” said Ms Sayer.

NOAH has formed a Brexit Task Force from members of its Board, covering the breadth of the UK animal medicines sector which is working to identify the risks but also the opportunities offered by the UK post EU Exit for its members.

It includes both UK based and global company heads. The Task Force will represent members’ views and drive policy forward at this crucial time.

A

nimax launches first sheep bolus with highest trace elements levels

Three of the most important trace elements for sheep can now be delivered in a single bolus thanks to a new product developed by leading UK bolus technology company, Animax Ltd. Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is the latest addition to Animax’s range of boluses.

The company’s veterinary director, Dr Elizabeth Berry, says the product is not only suitable for maintaining normal health, vitality and fertility of adult sheep and rams but can be used on replacement ewe lambs or ram lambs.

“Cobalt, selenium and iodine can be given in this combined bolus which has 185mg of cobalt, 100mg of selenium and 660mg of iodine, higher levels than any other bolus on the market!’’ Dr Berry explains.

The need for supplementation because of lack of these elements in the diet can be common and necessary with variables including soil type, level of rainfall, grass varieties, forage type and grassland management.

Dr Berry says pregnant and growing sheep have a higher need for these trace elements. “They may not obtain enough from their normal diet,’’ she warns.

“Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb contains optimum amounts to cover demands during growth, pregnancy and lactation and will provide these for a period of approximately six months.’’

At Troedyrharn, Brecon, fat lamb producer Rob Stephens says the benefits of the bolus is visual and important for flock condition – it is that daily release; he can see the advantages by looking at his flock.

There is also the added advantage that 4g of copper oxide is contained in Tracesure Sheep Traffic Lights, a separate capsule for supplementation in cases of low copper in the diet.

He fattens 1500 store lambs annually. “We buy lean lambs but we don’t quite know their history so we bolus them, it does a phenomenal job.’’

The newly-launched Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is generating strong sales.

Dr Berry says in addition to optimum trace element supplementation, labour efficiency is a key attraction.

The poultry sector has published figures showing a 71% reduction in antibiotic usage over a four-year period

he British Poultry Council (BPC) has published its 2017 Antibiotic Stewardship Report.

The BPC said that based on ensuring sustainable use of antibiotics, the UK poultry meat sector is seeking to protect the health and welfare of birds, safeguard the efficacy of antibiotics and to produce food consumers trust.

2016 saw the industry stopping the use of the prophylactic use of antibiotics and stoping the use of Colistin.

The industry agreed new antibiotic standards for Red Tractor Poultry Assurance, which will come into force in October 2017.

Over the period of 2012 to 2016 the UK poultry meat sector reduced its use of antibiotics by weight by 71%, or 23.72

tonnes, in 2016.

Across the same period poultry meat production has increased by 11% (1.79 million tonnes in 2016).

'Still much to be done' BPC Chairman John Reed said the industry is 'delighted' with the results but there is still much work to be done.

He said: “Our Antibiotic Stewardship continuously reviews on-farm management practices to ensure sustainable use of antibiotics throughout our supply chain.”

The next challenge for the sector is examining the link between antibiotic use and resistance in the poultry production chain.

New research has validated claims of traditional healers in Ethiopia that indigenous plants have strong anti-parasitic properties.

T

he Scotland Rural College (SRUC) findings could lead to benefits to Ethiopian farmers.

They farm the country’s 24 million sheep and 19 million goats - with local plants being used to fight damaging livestock infections such as worms.

Many small-holder farmers and nomadic livestock keepers in developing countries continue to rely on their indigenous knowledge, practices and locally available plants to control both human and livestock parasitic infections.

However, this valuable source of knowledge is not adequately documented, which impedes their widespread use, evaluation and validation.

Prof Jos Houdijk of SRUC’s Monogastric Science Research Centre said: “Livestock accounts for 40% of Ethiopia’s agro-economy so our research has the potential to have a far reaching impact.

“Whilst further study is needed to verify

the structure of the active compounds found, and to establish field efficacy in livestock, our research has validated traditional healers’ claims - that these plants do indeed have strong antiparasitic properties.”

Ethno-medicinal knowledge The college has a long standing interest in plant-based parasite control.

For a number of years, it has been collaborating with researchers from Hawassa University in Ethiopia to underpin ethno-medicinal knowledge on anti-parasitic plants with scientific evidence under the Combating Infectious Diseases of Livestock for International Development initiative.

Ketema Tolossa, an MSc Pharmaceutical Chemistry graduate from Addis Ababa University, undertook a successful PhD study on the anti-parasitic claims for two specific indigenous plants.

Ketema undertook a series of lab-based and animal studies with extracts from the two plants he had collected during field trips to Ethiopia’s remote Hamer

and Sololo Districts.

The names of the two plants are Adenia sp. and Cissus ruspolii.

Prevent worm eggs Ketema observed through a large series of laboratory tests that depending on the extract type and concentration used, plant extracts may completely prevent worm eggs from hatching.

He was also able to demonstrate active compounds in these extracts, and that in initial animal trials such extracts reduced worm burdens by around 60%.

Prof Houdijk added: “Feeding back such information to traditional healers through local agencies will assist to conserve such plants and promote their use in non-chemical parasite control strategies, so that small holder farmers can keep ailments and infections under control and get the best out of their livestock.”

A new project that aims to improve the conservation of bats on farmland has been launched by a charity.

I

t will help enable an investigation into agrienvironment scheme habitat requirements of bats in Hampshire and Dorset.

The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) has received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) worth £9,400 to help kick-start the project.

This work will be done through focused surveys on 15 farms and the findings will help to advance current knowledge of bat farmland ecology by identifying key habitats for farmland bat conservation.

Farmers, landowners and conservationists will be educated on ways in which to improve foraging habitats for bats as well as being provided with valuable information on the distribution and abundance of bats on farmland.

Bat populations declined significantly in the UK during the 20th century due to roosting and foraging habitat loss.

These declines were in part caused by agricultural intensification.

'Critical need to understand' Bat roosts in Britain are protected under legislation, but foraging sites are unprotected making them susceptible to land use changes.

But the GWCT wants to establish

which habitats on arable land are attractive to bats today and promote these habitats to farmers to aid bat conservation.

“When we think about farmland wildlife, bats are unlikely to be among the first species that spring to mind,” said GWCT postdoctoral ecologist Niamh McHugh.

“But there is a critical need to understand how farmland can be managed to benefit bats and we hope our project, with the support of the National Lottery, will help landowners to learn how to better conserve these fascinating creatures.”

Nerys Watts, head of HLF South West, said: “Bats are an incredibly important part of our natural heritage but they are at risk – a fact that National Lottery funded projects across the UK are trying to change.

“We’re delighted to support this project which will involve local people, farmers and other partners to develop an understanding of how farmland works as a habitat for bats and what needs to change to help them.”

France is to go-ahead with a neonicotinoid pesticide ban, which is set to go into effect in 2018.

This decision, by French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, follows a disagreement with Agriculture Minister Stephane Travert.

Mr Travert, who was in favour of relaxing the ban, told media outlets that he wants to address “the possibility of a number of exemptions until we find substitution products.”

In July 2016, lawmakers in France approved plans to ban neonicotinoid pesticides by 2018, based on their link to declining populations of pollinators, specifically bees.

The outright ban on neonicotinoid pesticides in France

was adopted by a narrow majority of the country’s National Assembly, as part of a bill to protect biodiversity.

In March 2017, the European Commission (EC) proposed a complete ban of agricultural uses of the widely used neonicotinoid pesticides across Europe under draft regulations.

In 2013, three neonicotinoids were temporarily banned because of concerns about their high toxicity to bees. A vote by member states is still being awaited.

But some farming groups criticised the move saying the pesticides are 'vital' in protecting the UK's crops from pests.

National Farmers' Union (NFU) Vice President Guy Smith said there was 'no clear evidence' that neonicotinoids cause widespread impacts on bee populations.

France's national food safety watchdog, Anses, is due to publish a report on the chemicals' impact on human health by the end of the year.

New research has revealed that a third of children are not aware that milk comes from cows, and two fifths think cows drink milk rather than produce it.

T

he survey, by Cadbury's, also revealed that 1 in 8 children from London (12 per cent) don’t know that cows moo – with almost twice as many boys than girls being confused about what sound they make.

The research shows the bizarre beliefs many British children hold about food and farming.

Nearly one in five believe milk comes straight from the fridge or supermarket (18 per cent).

When it comes to their appearance, one in 10 believe that a cow is the size of a double decker bus and over 10 per cent think they’re as small as cats.

These findings suggest that children haven’t yet had the opportunity to learn about cows as many may have limited access to them, particularly in inner cities.

The research was conducted between 21st – 23rd June 2017, on a sample of

1,500 parents and their children, living in the UK British parents and their children aged 4-8.

Misconceptions A survey conducted a few weeks ago by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) also revealed some serious misconceptions children have about food.

According to the esearch by the BNF, which spoke to more than 27,500 children across the UK, cheese comes from plants, tomatoes grow underground and fish fingers are made of chicken.

Nearly a third (29%) of five to sevenyear-olds thought that cheese came from a plant, not an animal, while one in four older primary school pupils (aged eight to 11) thought the same.

Pasta comes from an animal, according more than one in ten (13%) of eight to 11 year olds, and a quarter of primary school children say that cheese comes from plants.

Knowledge about vegetables is also poor, the research found.

In 2015, a survey showed that more than four in five primary age school children said they would visit a farm to find out more about where their food comes from.

The NFU said that these statistics show that food and farming is a subject that people of all ages can engage with and can help them to make more informed choices about the food they eat.

Promatec: Automated anaesthesia for piglet castration With an EU-wide ban on piglet castration without anaesthetic due to start in 2019, solutions to make the process as easy as possible for those that wish to continue castrating are beginning to appear on the market.

O

ne such solution on show at EuroTier 2016 in Hanover was the Porc-Anest 3000 from Swissbased company Promatec Automation.

Made to take three pigs at a time, the unit allows a piglet to be placed in a cradle and its head pushed forward into an anaesthesia mask where it is exposed to a five per cent by volume concentration of isoflurane anaesthetic for 90 seconds to send it to sleep.

The cradle is then rotated by 180 degrees to allow castration to take place, and the piglet is then removed and returned to its pen. It will wake up four to five minutes after the gas flow stops.

Up to 90 pigs an hour can be anaesthetised and castrated using the system, which is battery operated and can be placed on a trolley to move through the farrowing house.

The system has been used in Switzerland since 2010 and is now being introduced to Germany to gauge farmer reaction. One issue the distributor will have to deal with, however, is that it’s currently illegal for German farmers to use the system without a vet present – although it’s hoped that farmers who want to use it can be put through a training course and be certificated, which is how the system is used in Switzerland.

and other ancilliary equipment brining the cost up to about 10,000 euros.

The treatment cost is 20 cents/pig for the isoflurane plus labour; and in Germany there would be an added cost of about 1.00 to 1.50 euros/pig to have a vet present, depending on throughput.

WEDA: Feed mixing the easy way

N

owadays, the composition of feed should be matched exactly with the individual needs of the stock being fed, whether they’re suckling piglets, finishing animals or sows. Only if the ration mixture is correct, is optimal performance possible.

Independent of the kind of feeding system employed, it’s also important that the individual feed components are mixed efficiently.

With the help of the new mill control system from WEDA Dammann & Westerkamp, the workload of inhouse feed production and feed administration can be reduced.

The new system also ensures exact measurement and mixing of the feed ingredients. The easy-to-handle control module – that’s compatible

with all customary feeding systems – visualises the components as well as the mixing procedure of the unit via a touch screen. The process can be operated with up to 15 feed components, 10 product silos, a grain mill, a discharge screw conveyer as well as a dry mixer.

With the help of a convenient display, the mixing unit can be completely controlled and operated by this remote control. Via the intuitive user interface, the process can be operated with up to 15 feed components, 10 product silos, a grain mill, a discharge screw conveyer as well as a dry mixer.

Data used by the system can be backed up via a USB or ethernet port.

Nedap: Weight monitoring added to electronic sow feeders

P

ig producers don’t typically use sow weights to determine feed requirements because an easy and efficient method has not been available — until now. Nedap Weight Monitoring is the first system to capture sow weights and provide the up-to-date data producers need to make sound management decisions.

Nedap developed the Weight Monitoring system knowing producers need a way to feed sows more accurately based on bodyweights. It tracks the sow’s weight development and makes the information available through Nedap’s convenient, easy-to-access electronic sow feeder (ESF) dashboard.

The overall goal of accurate feeding in gestation is to develop a properly conditioned sow for farrowing. Multiple studies have shown that even in wellmanaged units, one out of three sows doesn’t have ideal body condition when farrowing.

Under- or over-conditioned sows can cost operations £65 per sow per year in decreased productivity, increased replacement rates and excess feed use. Nedap Weight Monitoring is integrated within Nedap Electronic Sow

Feeding and Nedap Sow Separation. As sows move through the ESF and Sow Separation system, a non-obtrusive scale (pictured, although production models do not have clear sides) gathers their weights. Producers can access each sow’s weight – along with feed intake and other data – online through Nedap’s software system.

Adequate nutrition for the gestating sow is key for the sow’s everyday function, health and body development, as well as for her developing piglets’ growth. In general, about 70 per cent of the feed required by a sow is needed for maintaining her body function and activity levels. The rest supports sow development and piglet growth. Missing the mark – above or below – on a sow’s feed requirements will negatively affect her production. A sow’s total daily feed requirement is determined by her body weight. Typically, sow facility managers use a visual evaluation to determine a body condition score or will measure backfat thickness. These methods are easy to implement and can be helpful. However, they focus on the smaller part of the sow’s total feed requirements. The sow’s weight is the most accurate, dependable measurement to determine the major part of the daily feed requirement.

Weights can vary by more than 35kg between sows that have similar backfat thickness at breeding. That difference in weight could equal nearly a 450g difference in daily feed requirement.

Overall, this could add up to a 20 per cent difference in daily feed allowance and almost 45kg of feed difference during gestation. Over- or underfeeding gestating sows can impact their performance and the herd’s total feed efficiency, but collecting sows’ weights isn’t a standard management best practice because most operations can’t weigh sows without causing stress to the animals or greatly increasing labour costs. Unfortunately, when basing feed allotments on back fat or body condition score alone, sow operations are only adjusting for 30 per cent of the sow’s total feed requirement. With Nedap Weight Monitoring in ESF, pig producers can easily complement the information they use to determine the best feed level for a sow.

Warm weather increases parasite risk in sheep and cattle

N

ADIS and Merial Animal Health are warning sheep and cattle farmers that recent above average temperatures could lead to a rise in parasitic disease in growing animals this summer.

The timing of worm treatments for lambs during the grazing season will depend upon prevailing weather conditions, grazing history, levels of contamination and stocking density.

Prolonged dry weather conditions during the spring may have delayed the larval challenge, but infectivity will increase once wetter weather returns and leave lambs susceptible to parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE).

Lambs on safe grazing at the start of turnout shouldn’t need worming until after they are weaned. Ideally lambs should be weaned onto silage or hay aftermaths that have not been grazed by sheep earlier in the year.

Lambs grazing permanent pastures will usually require worming to limit the build-

up of infective larvae later in the season.

Regular performance monitoring, or worm faecal egg counts (FEC) of lambs, from June onwards can be used to guide anthelmintic treatments. Treatment is generally recommended when FECs exceed 500-700 epg.

Targeting worm treatments for lambs failing to meet expected growth rates can reduce the risk of selecting for resistant strains of worms. Lambs in good body condition can be left untreated, allowing a pool of unselected parasites to re-infect the pasture, maintaining wormer efficacy in the longer term. Weighing lambs every 3-4 weeks will help identify poor growth rates and those individuals which will benefit from treatment.

Parasite control in rams can sometimes be forgotten, and yet they often graze the same pasture year on year and may be at increased risk of parasite challenge as a result of this.

It can take at least two months of good grazing for rams to gain one unit of condition score and parasites can negatively impact weight gain. Assessing whether rams would benefit from a wormer treatment during the summer will help ensure they are fit to perform at tupping time.”

Dairy and beef cattle are at risk of husk, caused by infection with the cattle lungworm from June onwards.

Unvaccinated calves, naïve adult cattle and those without an effective anthelmintic programme face the greatest threat.

Early signs of lungworm include coughing after periods of exertion and progress to more severe compromise, with coughing at rest, increased respiratory rate, and difficulty breathing. Prompt recognition and treatment is critical.

New Holland Revamps Mid-Range Tractor Offering

N

ew Holland has revamped its midrange tractor model offering, with a comprehensive line up in the under 120hp segment to suit livestock and mixed farmers. The 17-model tractor offering includes the T5 Electro Command™, recently launched T5 Utility, re-named T4 and existing TD5 ranges.

James Emery, New Holland’s midrange tractor product specialist in the UK and Ireland, says: “When the T5000 series was discontinued in 2013 it created a gap in our mid-range offering, particularly for farmers who need a versatile, compact tractor with good power and lift capacity at a reasonable price. The under 120hp sector is important to New Holland and the recent launch of T5 Electro Command™ and T5 Utility ranges ensures our customers can choose a tractor that perfectly suits their business.”

New Holland T5 Electo Command 120 Tier 4B The three-model 100 – 120hp T5 Electro Command™ range, winner of Best Utility at Tractor of the Year 2017, features a Tier 4B compliant engine and a number of performance improvements alongside updated styling. Enhanced front suspension, uprated rear lift capacity, heavy-duty axle and 16 x 16 Electro Command™ transmission with auto functions, provide farmers with more flexibility to perform draft work with heavier implements. A loader-

ready option and adjustable shuttle response make materials handling more efficient. Improved visibility in the VisionView™ cab comes courtesy of wide-angle mirrors and LED lighting packages, enhancing operator safety and comfort.

The five new T5 Utility models offer between 75 and 114hp and continue the heritage of the well-regarded T5000 series. Farmers can choose between two- or four-wheel drive on all Synchro-Shuttle™ models (fourwheel drive on all others), plus a wide choice of transmissions including Dual Command™, Power Shuttle™, and Creep-speed to suit individual requirements. The T5 Utility is well suited to handling tasks; loader-ready, it supports a maximum lift capacity of up to 2,539kg with a maximum lifting height of 3.7m from New Holland’s 740TL front loader. New Holland TD5 105 The three-model T4 range, previously named T4 PowerStar™, is powered by a 3.4 litre, Tier 4B compliant Common Rail F5C engine. Precision fuelling enables enhanced response when the engine is placed under load, and fuel savings of up to 13% have been achieved. The flat engine curve between 1900-2100rpm maintains maximum power over a larger working range for improved operational flexibility, especially when working with power hungry implements such as forage wagons. Operator comfort is built-in to the T4’s best-in-class cab and is further enhanced with an optional dedicated baler bar, used to mount in-cab baler and implement monitors.

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

A

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture.

That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter.

NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements.

The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so.

As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner.

Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes.

With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016.
