An imaginative and novel design using topography, retaining structures, stairs, ramps, minor drainage elements, platforms and other features, while simultaneously meeting basic functional requirements, and taking into consideration the relevant technical and regulatory constraints.
The design of the Central waterfront park has a theme of creating a forest in the city. The design layout has been separated into two main parts, the lawn area closer to the harbor and the woodland area closer to the city center.
Over the lawn area, some of the tree species were planted for example Ficus microcarpa and Melia azedarach. These species could be able to grow well in the harbourfront area with wind and abundant sunshine. Also, they could provide canopies for lawn users, especially during the hot summer. The proposed park has an extensive area of lawn area, i.e. 24793m2. This is to respond to the desire for green open space for the people working or passing by Central. With this space, various activities for example sports, picnics, and public events can be encouraged.
Over the woodland mix area, 4 di erent matrices were proposed and planted with di erent light standards or whip trees. Young trees have a greater ability to adapt to harsh and new environments. They also have a faster growth rate. Therefore, there would be big changes during the rst
10 years of the park's establishment. On the main roads, trees are proposed to plant on both sides to create di erent atmospheres and feeling for people when they walk along the park.
There are also some detailed considerations in the planting design. For example, in the area under the existing bridge, more shade tolerated plants were proposed. For the existing structures, green roofs with sun-loving plants and greenwall with climbers are also proposed. And along the entrance of the park, more ornamental species were selected.
For the long-term management objectives, the goal is to allow the park to be self-sustain and can last for the next 100 years. Therefore, woodland mixes are chosen to be planted in the park, because with a mix of species, we can guarantee that some species will grow well and be able to survive and stay for a longer time. Then, Within a relatively shorter period of time, like 10 years, we would be able to identify the species that are most competitive and growing the best. And at that time, maintenance can be treated more favorably for the strong species.
