by Karen Knott and Nigel Cull. A popular grande dame of the Arundel canine community, Lacey is the gentlest and sweetest natured dog you could every want to encounter.

It wasn’t always so though. When Karen and Nigel first met her at a rescue kennels in Southern Ireland, she was emaciated, starved and brutalised. She was terrified of other dogs, men in hats, drunks, children and sticks. She had just produced a litter of pups courtesy of a Rottweiler so as soon as they had whelped, Nigel and Karen brought her ( and another aged Retriever) back home.

The first year was a nightmare as she was extremely fearful of other dogs and would attack them as a form of self-defence. Eventually a wonderful dog whisperer near Adversane managed to help with some of her problems and life became easier.

Nigel says: ‘The arrival of the Retriever puppy Lara in September last year left her totally unimpressed,

but now we are at stage where they get on quite well - albeit sleeping in different parts of the house! Lara loves her but it’s not quite reciprocated yet! Having a pup in the house has sparked her up a bit and she tries to show off to the young one occasionally with her athletic prowess - the downside is that she tends to end up falling over, but the spirit is certainly willing!’

WHEN I took over The Bell four years ago, I was bombarded with complaints about dog poo on the streets of the town. As a result I joined the chorus of voices demanding more bins be put in strategic positions around the town and Arundel Park. The bins did appear and for a while that seemed to alleviate the problem, but I am now hearing the same complaints as in one of our letters from Mrs Anderson on Page 64. We love dogs in Arundel and our feature on Page 26 shows just some of them with their proud owners. These are not the ones at fault though – it is a few selfish owners who won’t clean up after their pets who are causing the problem.

Please, please, please – if you have the pleasure of having a dog, take responsibility for clearing up after it so other people don’t have to.

As always The Bell likes to help local charities and this issue is no exception.

Articles about the Snowdrop Trust (Page 54), the Red Cross (Page 43) and FEAST (Page 47) all show the help and support these various organisations generate for very worthy causes. The About Town news section (Page 6 onwards) also highlights a number of new charitable initiatives coming up that need your support – the Help for Heroes St George’s Day lunch, Home Start Arun and St Wilfrid’s Hospice Moonlight Walk.

New launches are also a feature of this issue. Drip Action are starting Children’s Theatre classes at the Victoria Institute (Page 4), Arundel is getting its very own couture designer on Tarrant Street (Page 13) and Arundel Brewery and The Norfolk Arms are teaming up to relaunch the Town Bar (Page 9). So a busy Spring is in prospect.

As usual we have some great historical pieces in this issue. Rosemary Haggedorn has a new book being published called Arundel at War and on Page 48 gives us a preview about the battle fought in Arundel during the English Civil War in the winter of 1643-1644. Going even further back, Yvette Cook’s fascinating feature on mason’s marks and graffiti in St Nicholas Church highlights a little-known aspect of this beautiful building (Page 44).

At 76 pages this issue is the biggest yet of the magazine. It’s packed with what I hope are interesting reads and if you want to comment on anything please send in a letter which can be published on the ever-growing Letters section (Page 63).

IT may seem a long time ago, but Christmas last year brought some memorable events.

Arundel Baptist Church Christmas Lunch

NEARLY 50 people sat down to a full Christmas Lunch at Arundel Baptist Church on Friday, 8th December, with both Church members and guests from Warwick Court and from the Community. Town Mayor Angela Standing also attended. The food was prepared by the church team and afterwards the guests were entertained by Year 6 Choir from Arundel C.E. School singing Christmas carols led by Mrs Simpson.

IMAGINE you have a toddler and then you’re told that you have not one but two babies on the way! That’s the situation for some of the mums expecting twins and Home-Start volunteers across Arun, Worthing & Adur are supporting the most sets of twins ever seen in the service and they say it’s twice the fun! One local mum Vicky says “You can have double the cuddles but the washing pile seems more than double! It’s hard splitting my time between the twins and my 3 year old son too.

I feel like I’m always going from one to the other and when one cries… they all do! My Home-Start volunteer is a lifeline and I can go to groups with my 3 year old when she comes round.”

Home Start Arun, Worthing and Adur is a charity run by local people to transform the life chances of children in the community. They recruit, train and support volunteers to work alongside families in their own home or a group setting where more appropriate. Working to give children the best possible start in life, they support parents to grow in confidence, develop and strengthen the relationship with their children and reduce the stress that can be caused by multiple births.

CHRISTMAS can be a lonely time if you are on your own but a new initiative in Arundel this year gave a seventeen people the chance to enjoy Christmas lunch 6

St Georges Day Sunday Lunch in aid of Help for Heroes

ANDY Batty (aka the man in the bear suit) is a tireless fundraiser for Help for Heroes and his latest effort promises to be a winner. He is organising a lunch in the Town Hall on St George’s Day, 22nd April. Guests will meet at 2.00pm and cheer the scouts as they parade past the Town Hall en route to their annual St Georges Day service at the Cathedral. Lunch will start at 3.00pm and will be followed by a good old sing along of traditional classics accompanied by brass. The tickets cost £40 which includes the full Sunday lunch of roast beef, a glass of fizz to start with and a glass of port with cheese. Ten Wonderful Years of the Moonlight Walk: Volunteers Needed!!

THE ever-popular Arundel Gallery trail, the oldest walking gallery trail in the world, is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. This year’s Trail will as usual celebrate local talent in 65 locations with 150 plus artists and makers taking part. Sculptors, painters, printers, ceramicists, illustrators, textiles, tapestry, furniture makers, photographers and jewellers are among the many exhibitors. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to meet and talk to the artists themselves whilst discovering many of Arundel’s period homes.’

Organiser, Mark Ford, says: ‘We would like to thank and acknowledge the generosity of Arundel homeowners and businesses for providing spaces to showcase Arundel based, established national and international artists each and every year during the ten-day festival.’

He also needs help of a different sort this year: ‘We want people to let us know their stories and send photos to add to the anniversary edition. We are

ST Wilfrid’s Hospice will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Moonlight Walk and wants to make it even more special on May 5. The aim is to start the night off with a light show around the Westgate Leisure Centre where people gather to take part in the 5k or 10k walk in memory of loved ones and in support of the Hospice. “It literally is a night to remember so don’t forget to put it in your diaries! We want to thank everyone for their amazing support,” said Head of Fundraising, Jerry Doyle. “As well as being very moving, the Moonlight Walk is also a lot of fun.”

A call is going out for volunteers who can help on May 5 with everything from marshalling walkers along the route and helping to run stalls, sign ups and issue kit at the Westgate Centre, to dressing up, doing mime, 7

putting up decorations and staging a light show. They want to hear from light technicians, drama students or anyone with circus or performance skills this year – from stilt-walkers and fire-eaters to classical musicians.

Golden Wedding Celebrations…..

MARIAN and Alan Webb celebrated their Golden Wedding in September last year. Marian was of course, amongst all the many things she does for Arundel, the editor of The Bell for many years (see Oliver Hawkins letter on Page 64). She and Alan were married in Vange, in Essex and have two children and two grandchildren. When asked about what makes a good marriage, Alan said ‘a husband has to know his place!’ and they both agreed that humour is important and separate interests vital.

Norfolk Town Bar Development

OUR popular local Arundel Brewery has teamed up with the Norfolk Arms to revamp their Town Bar and make it a destination venue for beer lovers called The Norfolk Tap. Samantha Walker of Arundel Brewery says: ‘Our aim is that super fresh kegged craft beer on tap will finally be available in the centre of Arundel and all our keg beers will be available, together with a select choice of some of the best beers currently being produced in the UK.’ The new manager of the Norfolk Tap, Peter Massey who has just moved to this area with his young family, is a massive craft beer fan. He is pictured above helping out at the Brewery with their latest ‘Uptown’ brew which is currently the highest ranked Sussex beer on Untappd, the popular beer rating app. The new bar officially opens on Saturday March 10 and will be a totally local enterprise with Arundel coffee producers Edgcumbes also supplying super freshly ground coffee during the day.

The other lovely couple to hit the magic 50, is Andrew and Ellen Godber who married in December 1967 at St Georges in Hanover Square, London. Andrew is Hon. Chairman of the Royal British Legion. They have two children and four grandchildren. Their secrets for a good marriage are patience and a sense of humour.

Neighbourhood Plan THE Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, got formal approval by the Town Council to Review with new terms of reference at the Full Council Meeting held on 8 February.

The Steering Group is made up of Town Councillors, representatives of Stakeholder Groups and residents.

A ‘shadow’ Steering Group met in late January to find out who would like to be on the NP Steering Group and voted Councillor James Stewart as Chair (he also chaired the first Arundel NP Committee from 2011 to 2014).

As with the first Neighbourhood Plan, this review will be advised by Neil Homer, from O’Neil Homer, a professional in Neighbourhood Planning. The first stage will be to ask Arundel residents what they want in terms of development over the next 20 years and this will take place from March to May 2018.

Angmering Chorale Perform Handel’s ‘Messiah’

The first President of the Society was the prominent English portrait painter, Juliet Pannett, MBE, FRSA. She lived in Angmering and was a firm friend of AAS, attending meetings and giving talks and demonstrations.

President until 1991, she was commissioned to paint many members of the Royal family including the Queen and several serving Prime Ministers. The Society’s second President was Neil Holland the well-respected local architect and watercolourist. The current President, Cameron Weller, was appointed in 2015.

This year’s anniversary Arundel Art Society exhibition will be held at The Cathedral Centre, London Road from 18th to 27th August as part of The Gallery Trail.

Members will make it something Thelma Hall and Juliet Pannett would be proud of. During 2018, there are also five planned demonstrations (Monday evenings) and three workshops. All details are on www.arundelartsociety.com.

Nonagenarians thrive in Arundel ASK the average Briton which was Handel’s greatest work, and they will doubtless say “Messiah”. This is no surprise as it was written here, in English, and includes the mighty Hallelujah Chorus (for which King George 1, the congregation and audience rose to their feet in admiration) and the final masterly Amen chorus.

Handel only took three weeks to compose this unique and dramatic work and it was first performed in Dublin in 1742 in the presence of the composer. Since then it has become a firm favourite with both amateur and professional choral societies, soloists and orchestras. On March 17 George Jones will conduct the Angmering Chorale, Sinfonia of Arun and Soloists in a performance of Messiah at Arundel Cathedral at 7.30. Arundel Art Society Celebrates 40 Years THE 40th anniversary of the first exhibitions of the Arundel Art Society will be in May and August this year.

The Society was actually formed by a local artist Thelma Hall, on 9th March 1977. A copy of one of her pictures is shown in the next column. The Society meetings were held in the Norfolk Centre in Arundel.

PAULINE Carder MBE, Life President of Arundel Museum, celebrated her 90th birthday at the Museum with cake and fizz. Friends and Museum supporters joined in the celebrations on 6th February. Pauline has worked tirelessly for many years launching, running and supporting the Museum and was thanked for all her efforts by current Chair of the Board of Trustees, Malcolm Farquharson.

£25,000 retail training grant for Arundel

Fenwick thanked Michelle, Marian Webb (Secretary) and his wife Christina for all their support over the years. He cited Arundel by Candlelight, the introduction of ATM’s into Arundel and better links with Arundel Town Council and Arun District Council as some of the achievements of his committee and wishes Ian Fricker well.

AT the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Wednesday 7th February it was announced that Arundel was receiving a retail training grant from Arun District Council of £25,000. The money has been obtained via the Pooled Business Rate and is being offered to Arundel, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis. The idea is that retail training course requested by the businesses in the area will be run in each location and open to any retail employees. Retailers are being asked for suggestions of courses they would like to attend. In addition if a retailer attends five or more courses they will be eligible for a shop front grant to cover 50% of the cost of upgrading up to a maximum of £2000. Make 2018 a less taxing year

THE run-up to the end of the tax year provides ‘use it or lose it’ opportunities to help secure your financial future

long term – in assets offering the scope for attractive levels of income and capital growth – are giving themselves a better chance of maximising the tax-saving opportunities on offer.

Over a decade since the financial crisis, the world is still a very uncertain place. Despite this, investors have enjoyed the benefits of a strong run by stock markets around the world, coupled with record-low volatility.

As the end of the tax year approaches, individuals yet to use their ISA allowance, or with accumulated ISA savings, need to carefully consider their options to ensure that they are maximising this valuable opportunity to generate tax-efficient capital and income for the future.

However, it would be wrong to believe that market shocks are a thing of the past. From uncertainty over Brexit to the threat from North Korea, there are many risks that pose a challenge to investors now; and any number of unforeseen factors in the years to come.

But these are beyond our control; they cannot be allowed to prevent us from planning our financial futures. Indeed, we will give ourselves the best chance of achieving our financial goals if we focus on what we can control: how and where we invest our money, how much tax we pay and the size of our retirement fund.

Effective financial planning should be a year-round activity. Nevertheless, the months of January, February and March provide us with an ideal opportunity to use reliefs and allowances that would otherwise be lost.

These valuable tax breaks can help to create long-term financial security for ourselves and our family.

Investment ISAs ISAs have become one of the most popular ways to save, principally because they are simple and readily accessible.

The substantial ISA allowance of £20,000 for this tax year is a very welcome step in encouraging individuals to invest for their future. However, as interest rates in the UK remain near record lows, money being held in Cash ISAs is failing to achieve the very basic objective of keeping pace with inflation. The result is real losses for savers.

But those who are investing their ISA allowance for the 12

Pensions Saving into a pension is an even more attractive prospect than it was a few years ago. This is because there is much greater freedom for taking benefits; and pension savings can now be more easily left as part of a tax-free inheritance. However, the advantages extend further than just drawing benefits and passing money on to loved ones: the government still rewards savers by giving them tax relief on their pension contributions.

For every 80p you contribute to a pension, the government automatically adds 20p in tax relief. Higher earners can claim extra tax relief through their annual tax return, meaning that a £1 pension contribution can effectively cost just 60p.

While tax relief is seen as a means to encourage pension saving, the annual cost to the Exchequer of providing it has now passed £50 billion. With the government under increasing pressure to reduce public spending, there’s no guarantee that the higher rates of tax relief will be maintained into the future.

Those wishing to make their retirement plans a reality should consider fully utilising their annual allowance for this tax year to make the most of the tax breaks on offer. Unused allowances can be carried forward, but only from the three previous tax years. This year is the final chance for pension savers to use the allowance for 2014/15: if it is not used by 5 April 2018, it will be lost forever.

Acclaimed Dress Designer Opens in Tarrant Street PARIS trained dress designer Rowena Gill has just returned to the UK from the States and opened a dress design and tailoring shop at 107 Tarrant Street. Originally from England she was brought up in France and there attended ‘Studio Bercot’ in Paris. She has been designing and creating dresses for over 20 years, and has created her own line which specialized in crystal and beaded evening dresses. Having been hired by designers such as Christian LaCroix, Yves Saint Laurent and Emanuel Ungaro to create Catwalk pieces for their shows, she has also designed for the Duchess of York and many well-known stars such as Sharon Stone and Naomi Campbell. Arundel Youth Club Celebrates 40th Anniversary ARUNDEL Youth Club has just celebrated its 40th birthday. It operates in The Old School in Surrey Street, and for nearly 4 years there has been uncertainty that it would continue due to issues with the Landlords over the lease. This has now all been resolved and with the lease signed they are looking to a very positive future.

With the aid of a grant from Arundel Town Council, an old office is being refurbished as a computer room. Although at present they are only operating 1 session per week on a Tuesday and average around 20 young people per session, the organisers are now hoping to expand.

The Club is run by volunteers, two of whom are qualified Youth Workers, but they are always looking for more help particularly if you have art, drama or computer skills.

Ash and Eloise

WHEN The Bell’s editor suggested an article on the town’s website, arundel.org, it seemed a good opportunity to look at one of the interesting teams working in and around Arundel, the husband and wife partnership of Ash Kent and Eloise Sole. Even for those who don’t know them in person it would be hard not to be aware of their activities, most notably the magnificent display of Christmas trees on buildings around the town, but also including managing the Arundel website (in the process of changing from arundel.org to visitarundel.com, in line with Brighton, Chichester, and others) and a whole range of hospitality and festivity services. Their current portfolio of activities strikes me as an interesting example of how to make the most of local business opportunities, having first made the most of the higher education opportunities available at a university only twenty minutes drive away from the town.

As an enthusiastic young Arun angler Ash had considered a river-based career with the Environment Agency, and had opted to study geography at Chichester University. But on the strength of a particularly well-received dissertation on Design Statements, he was approached by Mike de Lara to produce one for the town of Arundel. Over the next year, and with guidance from Arun District Council, Ash was able to produce what became effectively the blueprint for how the town might manage its development. Since then his interests have been very much centred on the town and its activities.

At the same time as pursuing the theoretical side of things, Ash was working with Chris May at Arundel Marquees, where he had first put up tents as a holiday job. In due course he established his own business, Tents N Events, based in Poling, working with Mike Tod and a team of skilled assistants, providing a wide variety of marquees and associated services. A key figure in the enterprise is the ubiquitous Barbara Hogan, known to all as, Auntie Barb, who deals with the marketing side and is also involved in producing an Arundel tourists’ town

map each year. Events can vary from a small anniversary in a private garden to, for example, a gathering of 250 submariners in Arundel Castle. Whatever the event it is clear that what is of paramount importance, as indicated by the testimonials received, is the company’s ability to put clients at ease: things will arrive on time, things will work. Even on occasions that are entirely celebratory nerves can be a little bit on edge; ask any father of the bride.

Ash was also able to take over the business of installing wall-mounted Christmas trees, setting up the company Festive Illuminations. The splendid idea of having Christmas trees on the outside of people’s houses around the town was initiated by Geoff Squires, to celebrate the Millennium. The project was then taken over by Chris May, and a few years later by Ash. From small scale beginnings the business has grown, and 300 trees were on display in Arundel this Christmas, with another 300 installed in other towns from Petworth to Petersfield.

from a grower in Kent, and Ash attributes their good looks to the fact that they are transported from the plantation upright and unbound, rather than trussed and flattened. There is then the spectacle of Ash’s team racing through the town, clambering up house-fronts to install the trees and lights in time for the Arundel

by Candlelight weekend at the beginning of December.

The overall effect, now that so many residents, from the castle to the smallest houses, participate, is of a town united in festivity. A proportion of profits are donated each year to The Chestnut Tree Trust, and at the end of the Christmas season the trees are shredded for garden mulch, returning their nutrients to the soil.

Ash’s involvement with the town website came about in 2006, when he was able to purchase the ‘Arundel’ website, and set up a community-based visual directory of shops, restaurants, services and attractions in and around the town.

‘Quirky, Fun & Cosmopolitan’ as the introduction to the site tells us, ‘Arundel captures the essence of heritage, urban chic and country pursuits, all within a stone’s throw of London. Experience Arundel and you will discover more than you’d expect, most of all it’s a place to return to and tell others about.’

Some might question the ‘stone’s throw from London’, given the shameful current train service, but in all other respects the site provides an accurate and helpful guide to what makes Arundel an exceptional location for residents and visitors alike.

A few years back while Ash was busy hammering in tentpegs, Eloise was having a wonderful time working as one

of the hugely popular Games Maker volunteers, who contributed so much to the success of the 2012 London Olympics. Deciding that a career in events management would offer the kind of experience she had enjoyed so much in London, she found that Chichester University was offering a degree course in the subject. This in turn led to a position as Graduate Assistant at the Arundel Festival, where Ash was co-chairman, having previously served as Artistic Director. Inevitably their paths converged, leading in due course to their own wedding at the House on the Brooks beside the Arun, with an orchard theme in honour of Ash’s late mother.

How many couples can claim to have celebrated their wedding in their own marquee?

Eloise’s experience with numerous weddings has led to the establishment of The Beautiful Day business, focusing on wedding styling and event décor hire, together with a website providing details of the whole range of wedding-related services, from tents to transport, stag nights to stationery. Where people were once satisfied with a marquee and a few gold chairs the demand is now for every kind of styling option, with rather a fashion at the moment for rustic themes, filling venues with barrels and crates and churns. We can be fairly sure that whatever the next styling trend will be, Eloise and Ash will be ready for it.

JOHN Barkshire is not a Mullet by right of birth but has every claim to be an honorary one. In John’s words, “Arundel has remained the family’s spiritual home throughout the years”, and his family has been a continuing presence in the town, apart from short gaps in the 1960’s and 1990’s. His traceable forebears lived and farmed in the surrounding countryside from the 18th century, but in 1814 there was a move to the town. William Barkshire and his family started trading as grocers at 11 Maltravers Street. From then onwards his ancestors in Arundel have been variously Mayor, a schoolmaster, a clerk in the Norfolk Estate Office, proprietors of the Norfolk Arms and owners of 14 Maltravers Street.

Arundel has remained the family’s spiritual home throughout the years In 1958 John was left 14 Maltravers Street by his aunt Winifred Bishop. John tried commuting to the City from Arundel but it proved impracticable and in 1959 he sold the house for £2000. I am told however that during his occupation there were very lively Saturday night Rugger Club parties at No. 14, including the local Police Sergant for good measure! In 1960 John married and bought a house in Sevenoaks. Of his three children one son has followed his father into the world of finance, being an investment adviser in Hong Kong. Moving on a few years, his uncle Jack retired to Town Quay and in 2011 John bought a house nearby in Tarrant Wharf, before moving with Audrey in 2015 to 7 Maltravers Street.

John was in fact born in Battersea and could claim to be a Cockney when the wind was in the right direction!

However in 1939/40 the family were evacuated to his grandparents’ home in Bedford, hence John’s attendance at Bedford School. After this National Service took him to Gibraltar with the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment.

He has a fascinating book of press-cuttings and other memorabilia covering the years 1954-66. From this I learnt that during his time in Gibraltar (and afterwards) he was a formidable athlete – a well-kept secret! 2nd Lieutenant John Barkshire won not only the first and second but also subsequent 3-mile road races, finally winning the Murray Cup. The Gibraltar Post wrote that his victories “proved beyond a shadow of doubt that there was no-one on the Rock to touch him for longdistance running”. His battalion (John being a member of the team) also won the Services 1st Division Hockey Tournament. I particularly liked a column in John’s collection headed ‘Short Life of Silk Hats’. Here we are leaping forward a few years to 1963 when John, at the age of 27, became a Managing Director of Cater Ryder.

figures and John’s comment was that his lasted 2 to 3 years “subject to treatment by his less reverent friends”!

On return to the UK in 1956 John was keen to attend University, but his father, a respected City establishment figure, was keener that he should embark on earning a living. His godfather organised a job for John with Cater Ryder, one of the twelve member firms of the London Discount Market Association. This was the start of a remarkable 50-year career in the City, about which John recently spoke entertainingly, effortlessly and modestly to members of the Swallow Club. A slightly different picture emerges from David Kynaston’s book ‘ City of London 1945-2000’. John was a ‘distinguished, groundbreaking and often controversial figure’. He is also described as a ‘visionary’. He describes this vision being that the world of money needed to change, so that money market houses would encompass the activities of the discount market, the Eurodollar market and the various sterling interbank markets. John described the City at that time as being 90% resistant to change of any kind, so considered himself fortunate to have worked with the intelligent and vocal 10% who were prepared to swim with the tide, modestly citing also ‘elements of luck and chance’. Kynaston refers to John’s ‘twenty often controversial years at the cutting edge ‘ and also describes him as ‘formidably energetic and a superb networker’. His pioneering attitude is reflected in the fact that in 1964 his firm was the first to order three computers, which John and a colleague programmed using the binary system.

On return he and David Spilman of Marshalls lobbied their respective seniors To step back in time, John says he started his employment in a state of complete ignorance, the workings of the City being a total mystery to him. This state of affairs did not last long however and in 1961 he obtained the Institute of Bankers’ Diploma in the Finance of Foreign Trade (with Distinction) having studied at the City of London College.

Gradually John and his enlightened colleagues began to realise that the City was beginning and must continue to change as new markets appeared. This view was confirmed by his six months in 1964 at Salomons in New York, studying the American securities market, where he saw dealing rooms that spanned several markets and realised that the UK was light years behind the USA in this respect. On return he and David Spilman of Marshalls lobbied their respective seniors, resulting in a merger between them and Cater Ryder, a foreign exchange broker and a sterling broker, creating a total banking entity.

ASCA pays for numerous small items for the surgery on a regular basis so we have set out to raise some funds for these general items.

We had wonderful support from a number of local businesses and from patients at the surgery who donated a fantastic range of raffle prizes – ranging from a fragrant hamper, aromatherapy candle, a lovely handbag and a selection of festive bottles.

The raffle was drawn on the day and winners were delighted. The raffle and a few sales of second hand books and jigsaws raised £177.40 which is a very useful addition to our general fund. We also enjoyed meeting many locals who use the surgery and who were interested in our work. During 2018 we will continue to fund raise for our general fund and we hope to run a fete with dog show or similar event in the Summer – and we will be looking for volunteers to help with this when we are firmer on the details.

Some people visit their GP when they could have cared for themselves at home or received care elsewhere. This makes GP surgeries very busy and means you and others may have to wait longer when you do need to see a GP. The Clinical Commissioning Group Coastal West Sussex CCG is the local body which commissions health care services on our behalf from hospitals and from our GP’s. As part of their work they are trying so support local GP’s and other services by raising awareness of useful services that we can use as patients – this in turn helps GP’s There is a very comprehensive list of services you can access directly on the Arundel Surgery Website www.arundelsurgery.co.uk look under - the practice information tab /alternatives to visiting the GP You may have seen or heard articles in the national press in January about screening for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is largely preventable thanks to cervical screening and the HPV vaccination programme. The actual smear test is relatively simple; it takes about 5 minutes and is carried out by a Practice Nurse at the Surgery. Screening is offered to all women aged 25 to 64 years old, with women aged 25 to 49 screened three yearly, and women aged 50 to 64 screened every five years. National charities have identified that some people do not take up their screening test due to embarrassment but we are so lucky in Arundel to have such good practice staff – don’t let anything put you off if you are worried why not talk to them – it could save your life.

Ryder, became Chairman of Mercantile House Holdings, formed via a management buy-out. The world of money was starting to be transformed more fundamentally than at any time during the century and expansion was the name of the game. John’s ambition was to create ‘one of the world’s select multinational, multiservice institutions.’ John was also instrumental in the forming of LIFFE (London International Financial Futures Exchange) of which he was Director, then Chairman for three years. The scheme came into operation in 1982. In 1987 Mercantile House Holdings was taken over, but John remained in the City until 2010 as a consultant and adviser. He was awarded the CBE in 1990, the year in which he also married Audrey, his partner since 1981.

The list of his involvements in Who’s Who is positively dizzying! John told me that he had enjoyed every minute of his City career – and this is evident! How many people can make such a claim? Following the takeover of his firm he formed a Charitable Trust, which supports the three areas in which his interests lie- the Church, the Army and education- he is a Governor of six schools.

All this activity would not appear to leave much time for leisure pursuits, but in ‘Who’s Who’ John’s recreations are listed as shooting and sailing. He has retired from both these activities but derived great pleasure from his boat which he sailed in Australia, the South of France, the Solent and Cornwall – a marvellous contrast to his pressurised City existence.

This might also apply to the five years during which John and Audrey farmed 100 acres near Ticehurst in East Sussex, where, amongst other things, they looked after 300 sheep! John described Audrey’s prowess at haymaking; while he drove the tractor she threw herself with a will into the manual tasks. In East Sussex John became heavily involved in public life, as a Deputy Lieutenant, sitting as a magistrate & chairing the Eastbourne Hospital NHS Trust, to name but a few!

I have overlooked one important aspect of John’s life until now, that is his military career, which did not end with National Service. Back in London he joined the TA, the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC), where he gave distinguished service, as well as playing rugby for their first XI and representing them in Cross Country Championships.

He was appointed to the HAC’s Court of Assistants in 1963 and was promoted to Captain in 1966. He was made CO in 1970 and became the Regimental Colonel in 1972.

This military interest and passion led to John’s involvement, after his final retirement from the City, with the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Staffordshire, which he chaired for eight years. It had been set up in 2001 following the model of Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C. The British Legion took over its administration in 2003 and formed a much-needed business plan. Under John’s leadership a successful

appeal was launched to raise £14M for a Visitor Centre.

Subsequently the visitor numbers rose from the initial 30,000 per annum to the present total of nearly half a million visitors each year. The centrepiece is the Armed Forces Memorial which bears the names of all those who have died in war since 1945. In a moving ceremony, invariably attended by a member of the Royal Family, new names are unveiled each year. John spoke of the powerful emotions evoked by the NMA and confessed that he had found this assignment emotionally the most challenging and rewarding of his whole career.

More recently John completed a major research project into the history of St. Nicholas’ Church and produced an excellent summary for the edification of stewards and visitors alike. He and Audrey act as the most conscientious and welcoming of stewards on a weekly basis. He is also Chairman of St. Nicholas’ Heritage Sub-Committee as well as Chairman of the Friends of Tortington Church. This is hardly surprising since his family lived in Priory Farm over a period of 25 years, and his grandparents and great-grandparents were baptised, married and buried at Tortington Church. He says he hopes to end his days there, beside his ancestors, but hopefully not for a good long while yet.

by Andrew Simpson Headteacher AS a school we greatly value being part of the community and always welcome the lovely people of Arundel to be part of their local school. I am delighted to be able to share some of the recent events that have happened at ACE, which hopefully show the rich and diverse curriculum our children have an opportunity to explore in their learning.

Double Southern Area Finals Our boys and girls worked tremendously hard in the locality athletics and cross-country competitions. As a result we are the only school to make it into the Southern Area Finals in two events this academic year. Both our boys and girls teams qualified for the Southern Area Cross-Country Final for state and private schools, an amazing feat when considering we were one of only eight schools to do so, out of over 75 schools in the area. All of the children ran exceptionally well, and a special well done to Ella Thornburg who ran her heart out and achieved second place overall – an amazing achievement. I am very proud of Ella for her fabulous fighting attitude and steely determination to do her best for herself and her school team. Ella will now represent the Southern Area in the InterPartnership finals, and we know that, as always, she will do her very best.

Our indoor athletics team made history by winning every event at the Year 5 and 6 Locality Athletics competition, something that has never been done before by one single school. This meant that both the boys and girls teams qualified for the Southern Area Indoor Athletics Final. The children all performed brilliantly and won lots of the races with every single member of the team trying their best. Overall we came fourth, which is an outstanding achievement with over 64 schools taking part. All the children showed 22

Amazing charity work from our ACE pupils Our children continually amaze me, especially with their consideration and care for others. I wanted to share with you some particularly outstanding examples of this ACE attitude.

Poppy and Charlotte caring for the community A massive well done to Poppy and Charlotte in Year 3 who decided together to sell their daddy’s delicious shortbread biscuits at Arundel by Candlelight. All proceeds were donated to Chestnut Tree House and the girls raised an impressive £264 in total. Poppy and Charlotte worked really hard packaging and selling them all themselves, being out on the street for hours without complaint. Daddy did quite well, too, having baked 600 biscuits! A massive thank you to Poppy, Charlotte and their family for caring so much for our community

Amazing work by Mackenzie Mackenzie in Year 3 has been thinking about how she can make a difference. She had the enterprising idea to help others by running a lucky dip at her mum’s shop, and she even encouraged her mum to donate a few bottles of mulled wine to raise money for her chosen charity! The charity she raised funds for was the Ferring Country Centre, which makes such a difference to so many local people. Well done, Mackenzie.

Emily and her fabulous effort to support Chestnut Tree House Emily has worked tirelessly over the last couple of years to raise over £6,000 for Chestnut Tree House. Emily has achieved this amazing feat by busking at Christmas with her trumpet and taking part in a 13k run from

Westbourne House to Yapton. As a way of thanks for her hard work, Chestnut Tree House has nominated Emily for a West Sussex Pupil of Achievement award, which I think you will agree is very well-deserved indeed.

ACE Choir Performances Although Christmas now seems like a very long time ago, I did want to include thanks to our ACE choir, which performed so well and in many different events during the Christmas period. This included the exciting opportunity to take part in Arundel by Candlelight, to sing for the Arundel Baptist Church congregation, to give a mini carol concert at Morrisons in Littlehampton and even to take part in an amazing recording for a local BBC radio station!

At ACE we are extremely lucky to have a very talented musician and volunteer Mr Hawke, who not only regularly leads whole-school worship, but also ensures that our choir is performance ready for the Arun Choral Society concert at Arundel Cathedral. Mr Hawke’s choir was complimented by senior members of Arun Choral Society not only on how beautifully they sang, but also on their impeccable behaviour throughout the day.

Thank you to Mr Hawke for inspiring and leading such a wonderful choir and, as always, giving up so much of his own time for our ACE children.

Badminton England comes to ACE ACE has been very fortunate to be one of only a handful of schools in the county to have secured a very special training programme from Badminton England, which has meant that our children have had the amazing opportunity to be trained by Jonty Russ, a medal winner and member of Badminton England. The boys and girls in Year 3 and 5 were lucky to have an opportunity to learn all about the skills that were involved in badminton and it has been so lovely to have a member of Badminton England in our little hall in Arundel! The children really enjoyed themselves and had lots of fun learning a new sport.

When God met Elijah, he did not speak through the strong wind, the earthquake or the fire, but in the gentle breeze: ‘After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.’ 1 Kings 19:12.

Children and young people are innately curious about life. Growing up raises lots of questions, some to do with their experience, both the good and the bad, and some to do with their sense of wonder at the universe we live in and whether there’s more to life than meets the eye. We hope that the Circle gives our children an opportunity to relax and reflect on life.

Year 5 and their fabulous learning day in Brighton

WOW is the most appropriate word to describe the amazing trip the children in Unicorn Class took part in recently. The children have been studying War Horse for their World War 1 topic work, and as part of this they had the opportunity to watch The National Theatre’s acclaimed production of War Horse at the Brighton Centre. Prior to this the children took part in a workshop at the Apple Store in Brighton, where they worked on a brand new set of iPads to explore a program that uses art and film-making to produce their own individual take on what they felt symbolised World War 1. The work was linked to War Horse and also provided an opportunity for the children to consider British Values and how these relate to war. The entire class behaved impeccably throughout what was a very busy and action-packed day, and received the following comments: “The best class we have ever had. Their behaviour, attitude to learning and general manners were impeccable.” (The Apple Store Manager and Trainer for the day).

“The children were an absolute credit to your school.

Their behaviour was outstanding and, considering they were probably the youngest group of children in the theatre today, they were the best behaved.” (The Steward in Charge of Productions at The Brighton Centre)

Recently we had some work carried out on our peace garden known as the ACE Circle. We created the Circle so our children could have an opportunity in their lives to slow down and reflect on what life is all

by Lucy Horne Headteacher We would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year.

The new year has begun in earnest and children are settling down to learn with new topics and challenges.

There are many events and trips coming up in the Spring Term. Firstly though, I would like to look back at some of the highlights of late 2017.

Christmas events

The choir were invited, as usual, to sing at the Retired Estate Workers Christmas Lunch at The Norfolk Centre and then again at The Priory Residential Home. They had an opportunity to sing in the combined choir of St Philip’s and Arundel C of E school at the Arundel By Candlelight event and then again, finally, with Arun Choral Society, alongside a number of other local schools.

A number of our guitar players performed carols in our school assembly and the choir sang to entertain parents and grandparents on the last day of term.

They performed at the front of the school at home collection time. The singing was accompanied by mulled wine and mince pies kindly arranged for all by The Friends of St Philip’s.

Reception Class went to watch Aladdin in pantomime in the last week of term (Oh, yes, they did!). A wonderful experience for all and the first time they all travelled on a school coach.

The younger children reminded us of the real reason of Christmas in their Nativity at the beginning of December and then Key Stage Two children were once again privileged to present their Christmas Service in Arundel Cathedral. Both events were respectful and engaging.

Joseph, in Reception Class, wanted to do something for others during the lead up to Christmas and so decided to ring around his wider family and take orders for cakes and ‘toad in the hole’. With his mum, they baked, cooked and delivered. They raised £30. With this money, Joseph and his mum went to the supermarket and

bought as much non-perishable foods as they could. This was then dropped off at the Stone Pillow Homeless Charity food bank. What a wonderful life lesson of charity for us all. Well done Joseph.

In our final assembly of the Autumn Term, we awarded the ‘Most improved reader’ prize to one child in each class. This is funded each term by the husband of Mrs Sherlock, a Reading Buddy who passed away in 2016.

Spring events ahead Year 1 and Year 2 have started a series of sessions with a Gymnastics Coach. The two coaches are coming into school weekly to work with each year group on specific routines. A team will represent the school at the Locality School’s Competition at the end of January.

Twenty four children from Years 4, 5 and 6 attended an indoor athletics competition this month. The event included, speed bounce, relays and different types of jumps. The children performed well and came second overall.

Year 3 attended a music concert at Chichester Festival Theatre. This was a great opportunity to see live musicians and to learn about the different parts of the orchestra. Thanks to Miss Robinson, our Music teacher who accompanied them.

We continue this term with our International links to schools across the world. Year 1 children received numerous Christmas cards from children in schools in Latvia, Slovenia, Poland and Germany. Our links with a school in The Gambia are strengthening with penpals from different year groups and a visiting French themed theatre production and children leading their own French café will feature later in the year.

Reception Class look forward to learning about new life and life cycles with the assistance of ‘Living Eggs’, an incubator full of ten eggs that the children will be able to watch hatch and develop. Families can then either opt to keep the chicks or they will be returned to the company for future ‘Living Egg’ opportunities.

Year 5 and 6 Dance Club treated us all to a glimpse of their ‘show dance’ they are learning for their dance festival at the Alexandra Theatre and at the Dance Festival at St. Philip Howard in the Spring Term. Their dance teacher will continue to rehearse the routine with them.

Later this term, we will again be linking with Arundel C of E school and Arundel Museum to work on a project linked to World War 1. From previous projects, we had a visit from representatives from the Museum who donated a school copy of Winnie Bishop’s diary and letters were given out thanking the children who took part in last year’s project. The current Year 4 children are excited to learn more about the part Arundel played in WW1 and Year 5 will be working on War poetry and stories linked to their topic Warhorse. This links with projects both across the Locality group of schools and the Museum and will culminate in a trip to see Warhorse in the theatre in June.

Messages and Services from the Churches AS I write this (January) I have just been given a bunch of daffodils. A wonderful gesture that reminds me that spring is approaching. Every year the flowers seem to appear earlier, so much so that by Easter Sunday or even Mothering Sunday before, the daffodils have been known to have finished. Despite this, this advent of new life is heart warming after the long cold months of winter. Like children, I look out for the signs of new buds when I am out on my walks and it lifts my spirit when I find some whatever the month. The outward signs of the celebration of Easter reflect this; chicks, eggs etc. How often though do we marvel at nature’s ability to regenerate itself and yet fail to appreciate the new life offered to each and every human being in the religious significance of Easter. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ isn’t just a path to renewing this present frail human life but to take up his invitation to share in the immortal life that somehow so much of humanity craves. There is something in us that wants to go on beyond physical death, our life must mean more than that. We can put our marker of achievement down in this life but is that all we have. Our studies of history particularly family history shows that people slip out this world without leaving much of a mark and yet they lived lives, had relationships and achievements which seem soon forgotten. Surely there is more to us than that. Our faith in God enables us to share in what he gave to his Son on that first Easter Sunday morning – a promise to abide with him forever. So when we next look at new flowers or baby animals lets go beyond the warm comfy feeling they engender and see a reality that they can represent to us – eternal life – a reality that we can be part of and one we must share with others.

THE crucifixion of an innocent, and yet condemned man lies at the heart of the Christian faith. St Paul states it clearly: “We proclaim Christ crucified”. This is a strange thing to say. To put all your faith and trust, to commit your whole life to one whose mission seemingly failed in the most ignominious way, appears to be utter madness.

It’s a problem readily acknowledged by St Paul who tells us that the crucifixion of Jesus is “a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.” And he’s right! Why men and women across the ages, and still today, despite the so-called Enlightenment, put their faith in this executed Christ figure is a complete mystery to many.

So, what’s going on? Why this apparent mass delusion?

Is it, as the Independent put it in a particularly sneering and condescending headline a few weeks ago, that ‘Atheists are more intelligent than religious people’?

Why might this be? The report suggests that it might be because religious people rely on intuition rather than reasoning. Only someone who is utterly theologically illiterate could write such a thing. Thomas Aquinas’ great Summa Theologiae is not only a masterpiece of Christian philosophy, but of all philosophy. And, from beginning to end, it’s packed with such meticulous reasoning that it would leave your average journalist’s mind spinning like a top. But although Aquinas is perhaps the greatest example, he is representative of a Christian tradition that spans the centuries. In short, Christianity is a highly reasonable faith.

So, if it’s not because of some inherent impairment in the ability to reason, why do so many people put their faith in this crucified man? It’s because they’ve learned that, as St Paul tells us, “God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom.” In the wisdom of this world everything is focussed on the self. It’s about me – my desires, my comfort, my status. We see it played out in a myriad of ways everyday. And sometimes, perhaps even often, this inward focussing on the ego leads to a world where so many are used and abused. But the foolishness of God says that true wisdom is found in a radical giving away of the self. As Jesus said, “Those who want to save their life will lose it.”

This is the wisdom that we see in action on the cross. In

Christ, God gives himself away—he gives his life—not for himself, but for us. As the famous passage in John’s Gospel puts it: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”

I guess this topsy-turvy version of reality will always baffle some; death brings life, giving means receiving. It’s up to you to choose, but personally I’d choose the foolishness of God over the wisdom of humanity any day.

Luke 23:42 AS I write this Easter Message, it is just over three weeks since since we celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. God came to earth in the person of a baby born in Bethlehem. Yet before his conception it was part and parcel of God’s plan for his Son Jesus to be the Saviour of mankind’s sin. Both Mary and Joseph were told by the Angel of the Lord to name their son Jesus. There was a reason for this because the name Jesus means Saviour, so Jesus would save his people from their sins. It is true therefore to say that Jesus was born to die; and the outworking of this happened 33 years after his birth at what we know as the first Easter.

Luke in his Gospel chapter 23 brings to us a truthful story of hope from the Cross of Calvary. Jesus was crucified between two well known criminals - two thieves! One on his left and the other on his right.

One of these men derided Jesus by verbally abusing him. He called out, ‘are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!’ The comments of this thief were not the views of the other man who challenged the other thief in this way, ‘why are you criticizing Jesus; this man has done no wrong whereas we are both receiving due reward for our criminal acts’. He viewed Jesus as the go to man for salvation and forgiveness!

Then this common thief, this criminal who stood up for Jesus did something incredible; he called out to the Saviour of sin, ‘Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom’. As this man was about to die he turned to Jesus Christ for forgiveness and Jesus accepted him. Our works don’t save us, but our true faith in Jesus Christ does. The Lord was gracious to this sinner! Jesus responded with words of hope, ‘truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise - heaven!’ He was guaranteed a place in glory with his new found Lord and Saviour. All this made possible because of the death and resurrection of Jesus!

All who call on the Lord Jesus for salvation will be saved of their sins; only don’t leave this matter of

repentance of your sin too late, like the thief on the cross. Today is the day of salvation!

Forthcoming Events CATHEDRAL CONCERT On Saturday, 3rd March at 7.30pm the Sandgate Singers, the Storrington Community Choir, will perform ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. It was written at the millennium, dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis and has rapidly become a popular item in the choral repertoire. POP-UP OPERA AT ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH This versatile opera company is fast gaining an excellent reputation and the Friends of St. Nicholas have organised an opportunty for people in Arundel to see one of their performances. So, on Saturday 12th May at 7.30pm in the church they will be performing two light-hearted short operas by Mozart, so come along and enjoy their presentation of these. There will of course be a Bar! Tickets are £25, £20 & £10, half-price for under 18-year olds, available from St. Nicholas Parish Office, tel: 01903 882262.

All funds raised will be channelled towards an upgrade of the electrical system in the church and installation of radiant heaters. Once this project is completed, the Friends of Tortington plan to focus fundraising on the ongoing maintenance of this much loved and ancient church.

Snowdrops are already plentiful around the church and a profusion of daffodils will soon follow. Tortington is a place of beauty and peace. If you are looking for a location to visit with friends or family it is an excellent starting point that is always open.

Christmas may seem a long time ago, but I would like to take the opportunity to extend our thanks to the Duke of Norfolk for gifting the people of Arundel with the glorious Christmas Tree, and to the Norfolk Estate team and Rotary Club of Arundel who dressed and erected it. Also, to Ash Kent, Festive Illuminations for their efforts in decorating the Town with lit Christmas Trees.

Community Award 2017 On Thursday, 7th December 2017, Mayor of Arundel, Councillor Angela Standing, presented the third annual Arundel Community Award to Gill Hart for her work with the 1st Arundel (Earl of Arundel’s Own) Scout Group.

Gill has been giving her time to the scouting movement for over 30 years.

Generations of Arundel residents have benefitted from her scouting skills, in helping young people reach their potential. With her endless enthusiasm, dedication, care, tireless support and fundraising she is the backbone of the Arundel Scout Group.

Dementia Friendly Town In November we hosted our first Dementia Friends awareness training session to our Town Hall Staff and local businesses, this was a huge success. Following on from this we are now rolling out further courses in our aim to make Arundel a Dementia Friendly Town.

20mph Zones As a result of an initiative from the Arundel Town Council Traffic Committee, West Sussex County Council proposes to make a permanent Traffic Regulation Order to introduce 20 mph speed limits throughout the Town Centre and all residential roads.

The Order also introduces 30mph speed limits on Mill Road, from a point 115m north-east of High Street, north eastwards to a point immediately east of Swanbourne Lodge, and on The Causeway from its junction with the A27 northwards to a point 30m south of Queen Street.

Police Link I was pleased to meet up with Acting Inspector, Daniel West from the Prevention Team for Arun/Chichester District following on from residents’ concerns. We were keen to learn of ways residents could become more aware of incidents in the area and to be more vigilant to prevent crime.

Gill Farquharson chats to Matthew Vann who runs the popular Arundel Butchers.

ARUNDEL’S very own butchers shop is truly a family affair with three generations of the same family involved. Matthew Vann owns it and runs it with the help of his brother Will and son Michael.

Matthew was born in Chichester although spent most of his early life in Barnham where he went to school at St Philip Howard Matthew was born in Chichester although spent most of his early life in Barnham where he went to school at St Philip Howard. He initially started working on Saturdays in K J Evans, the local butcher, and when he left school at 14 became a full-time trainee. He stayed there to complete his training and, when qualified, also worked for David Smith, who owned the Arundel Butchers shop at that time. He came to Arundel full time in 1993 and has been here ever since. David had bought a holiday villa in Spain in 2001 and two years later, he decided to move there permanently. He asked Matt to run the shop for him and eventually Matt bought half of the business and now owns all of it.

Matt has been settled in Bognor with his partner for the last four years but has lived all over the area, including Arundel briefly. He has three children and two grandchildren. His son Michael works in the shop; his daughter Bethany is at university in Bournemouth doing Media and Film Studies and his youngest son, Owen, is a mechanic.

Matt says ‘People want to know where their meat is coming from and they will pay for quality.’

The business has a solid base although it has had to adapt as buying patterns have changed but the one constant has always been the demand for top quality meat. Matt says ‘People want to know where their meat is coming from and they will pay for quality.’ For this reason Matt is very choosy about suppliers. The beef all comes from Scotland and it is hung on the bone, and the team do all the butchering themselves. The lamb all comes from local South Downs farms and the pigs are also local mostly from Storrington and East Sussex.

bacon is from Sandwich Farm in Wiltshire and the ham is from Worthing. As Matt explains - ‘We’ll never beat supermarkets on price so we have to be much better on quality’. He continues: ‘I am very lucky that I have the customers I do. I love Arundel – it’s a fantastic place and I have lovely customers which I really appreciate.’ People come from a surprisingly wide radius to visit the shop - Bognor, Storrington, Barnham, Amberley and even further afield.

They make their own burgers and sausages, which are very popular. They also make dog food from the off-cuts of meat. Although they do sell cooked meats and pies Matt admits ‘I don’t really push that side of it because Pallant is just next door and I try to work with them.

We work well together for the people who come into town.’ When it comes to advice on actually cooking his products though, Matt admits to ‘being a bit vague on the cooking front’ but says Will and Michael ‘are both good cooks and so they are the best ones to ask!’

The building is owned by Ted Joyce and dates back to ‘about 1760’. In true Arundel style, the building is believed to be haunted. All three men have experienced strange feelings when down in the basement. ‘I’ve had my head pushed from behind while I was standing making sausages. The boys have had their aprons tugged when they are standing at the sink and we’ve seen various strange things.’

Matt plans to retire at 60 although he loves his work. ‘I do enjoy it – I’m one of those people who do the same thing every day without getting bored and I enjoy the customers. ‘ He would like to travel more but doesn’t think realistically that will really happen until he retires.

However he admits to coming in on his day off and even on Sundays to check that everything is alright ‘I would worry if I didn’t’ he says.

British Red Cross From Sussex to Syria: the British Red Cross is there in a crisis.

vehicles, the Emergency Response volunteers bring clothing, sustenance, hygiene packs, practical advice and emotional support to people in very difficult circumstances.

Crawley and Rustington are among the bases for the charity’s medical equipment service, which lends out wheelchairs, commodes, bathing aids and other equipment to people with temporary mobility problems.

In Hove, the Red Cross provides support and advice to refugees, continuing a tradition that began in the wake of the Second World War. As well as helping people deal with the aftermath of a crisis, the Red Cross helps communities to prepare for them, and build resilience. It runs first aid training courses, provides trained first aiders for public events, and delivers humanitarian education workshops to young people.

WHETHER you’re a victim of a natural disaster or vulnerable after a hospital stay, the Red Cross can help your recovery.

In news footage of any international emergency or war zone, there will be the emblem of the Red Cross or Red Crescent. When disaster strikes, the Red Cross is on hand to provide completely impartial assistance, run relief camps, distribute aid, provide sanitation, and help communities to recover and rebuild.

What is less known is that the humanitarian agency also helps people to cope with everyday crises, much closer to home.

The charity works as one team around the country.

Last year, Sussex volunteers travelled to London to join the long-running support provided by the Red Cross to victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Tricia Earp, Red Cross operations director for the south east, said: “Our volunteers are hugely dedicated, kind, compassionate people, committed to helping alleviate suffering.

“We are all proud to be part of the worldwide Red Cross family. It doesn’t matter who you are. If you’re facing a crisis, the Red Cross will help you through.”

Red Cross Week runs in Arundel from 6th to 12th May, 2018.

Here in Sussex, the Red Cross runs a whole range of community services for people struggling to manage in an emergency.

The charity supported over 3,000 people in Sussex alone last year through its volunteer-led social care services.

The carer’s service offers practical and emotional support to carers and their families, and the assisted discharge service helps people to return home after a stay at a Sussex County hospital.

The Sussex emergency response team, based at Haywards Heath, East Preston and Hastings, works closely with the police and fire services to help those affected by fires, floods, evacuations and other emergencies. Using specially adapted 43

The men who left their marks…

...on St Nicholas Church. Yvette Cook gives a fascinating insight into the mason’s marks and graffiti to be found in our beautiful 14th century church.

FOR a great many years churchgoers and visitors alike have walked past a remarkable treasury of social history inscribed into the pillars of our parish church of St Nicholas, dismissing it as common graffiti and the doodles of bored choirboys. Nothing could be further from the truth. It reaches far back into medieval times and each and every mark holds a story, some of which we can unravel and others which will never be known and might have been known only to the person who inscribed it. This is the mysterious world of medieval graffiti – the prayers, hopes and fears of the people who worshipped at St Nicholas or were passing through on a journey elsewhere.

The very oldest marks are rather different but fascinating in the stories they, too, hold. They are the banker’s or mason’s marks contemporary with the building of the church and examples can be found on every single pillar if you are prepared to look and the light is right. There are over a hundred scattered about the church but they are much more than mere marks – always look for the story behind them.

Masons Mark

When Richard Fitzalan commissioned a new church in the late 1370’s he wanted the best. He was immensely rich and immensely powerful and money was no object.

The architect chosen for the parish church section is thought to have been Henry Yvele, known for his work on Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, and he in turn would have wanted the best masons available for the more skilled work at Arundel.

With the old buildings demolished, the site cleared and new foundations laid the carpenters would have been set to building long wooden workshops, lodges, with strong stone work benches ready for the arrival of this elite set of men. They came perhaps singly or in groups and perhaps with families and apprentices in tow and each with his own set of tools and, importantly for us, his own mason’s mark.

There is still a lot of debate as to how these marks were granted and whether or not they were inherited, passed on from master to apprentice or awarded on entry to

the masons’ guild but it is generally accepted that they were used to identify the work and often as a means of calculating payment. Each mark inscribed carried with it years of experience, and well deserved pride in work completed. I once found a man just gazing at a pillar. He told me that he was a craftsman, a carpenter not a mason, but he was in awe of the skill of the man who had shaped the stone. I pointed out the mason’s marks and, after a brief pause, he stepped forward, placed his hand over the nearest and with a broad smile on his face, said “Hello mate, well done.” He saw the man behind the mark.

So far we have discovered nine individual marks varying from a simple arrangement of three strokes to a more complicated cipher of seven. They were usually made up of easily incised straight lines but we have an intriguing one in the shape of a trefoil – three small circles and a tail. Often appearing on the more intricate work of the scrolled bases and capitals it might have belonged to a senior member of the team.

We are unlikely ever to know the names of these masons, even the architect has only been identified on stylistic grounds but we might just catch a glimpse of what some of them might have looked like. High up at the top of the walls are stone corbels supporting the wooden roof and each has been amusingly carved into the likeness of what was probably a real person, an old mason’s joke. Might one of our men be up there still gazing down on his work?

Nothing is ever certain about these enigmatic symbols and the origins of the double V are obscure but it is thought that they had a strong connection to the Virgin Mary as Virgin of Virgins and might have been prayers or pleas of intercession to St. Mary. They, again, became symbols to ward off evil and by the C17th particularly, to ward off witches. They are now known as witch marks and many examples are to be found on the pillars and around the entrance to the church.

There is much more to learn, much more to discover.

The strong light of a torch reveals very early Christian symbols, beautifully inscribed names and even drawings.

Very soon we hope to run sessions for those interested in learning more, in learning to record, to photograph, or simply to connect with the past. Keep an eye on what is happening at St Nicholas, come and look for yourself and please sign the visitors’ book, we welcome your comments. This article comes with a health warning – graffiti hunting is addictive!

Very soon we hope to run all age open days inviting people to come and help record these fascinating marks and we will probably stray into the realms of the apotropaic graffiti, the signs and symbols used by our medieval ancestors to protect both the church and themselves from malign influences. Chief of these are inscribed circles and their variants and what is known as the “double V” – two slightly overlapping Vs to form a W. Recent studies have shown that these appear in churches all over the country and that their meanings must once have been well known and understood.

Circles are ancient symbols of protection and almost every church still containing graffiti will boast an inscribed circle. Particularly popular was what is known as a daisy wheel or hexfoil. Still in use today and widely used in earlier days to protect barns and stables, the daisy wheel was thought to deter evil. In medieval times superstition ran easily alongside religious beliefs and the two must often have been strongly intertwined. It was thought that small demons running round the church were attracted to lines which they loved to follow, but they had to follow them to the very end and if an inscribed motif was an endless line they were doomed to follow it for ever. There is a very neat daisy wheel in the church kitchen carefully protecting the coffee machine but, even better is a triple daisy wheel near the

As well as searching for our GIANT yellow ducks there are lots of Dusty’s ducky cousins to see, daily pond dipping & craft sessions, and two play areas to try.

The Bentley Wildlife Carvers are offering a Begin Woodcarving Workshop on Sat 7 April where you carve and finish an avocet model. See a display of the work by the experts from the Bentley Wildlife Carvers group on Sun 8 April. Paul Stevens the Reserve Managar talks on the Bats of Arundel as part of our Supporter’s Group Talks Series on Mon 21 May for £3 a ticket at 7 pm.

The May half term is an ideal time for families to explore new life around the reserve. Wild cute & fluffy ducklings & goslings will be waddling the reserve and you can see what’s hatching out in Arundel’s living collection, too.

The sand martins move through the reserve on return migration from Africa around Easter. After last summer’s breeding success in the nesting bank of the Sand martin hide we are hopeful our sand martin family may return and bring some friends. We will be playing colony calls from the hide to attract the migrants, granting visitors some close up encounters with the hirundines.

The wet grassland at Ramsar and Lapwing hides are nesting spots for lapwing. In recent years we’ve had eight breeding pairs of lapwings on the wet grassland, and their fluffy chicks should be hatching out in April. Lapwings are fiercely protective parents and will take to the air as a group to mob any birds of prey that come after their chicks.

Oystercatchers also breed onsite. Last year one pair of oystercatrchers choose a strip of gravel covering a new drainage pipe in the Tundra exhibit as the perfect camouflage for their eggs. They also nest in te Arun Riverlife lagoon area at the back.

Daisy’s India Daisy Maxwell, a fifteen year old from Arundel, accompanied the group who went to visit the FEAST Charity project in Tamil Nadu, India in October last year. Here is her account of the trip.

GOING to India I had no idea what to expect. I had never been somewhere so far away and so different from England. After arriving this all changed…it was the best experience of my life.

The journey from Trivandrum airport to the project I was visiting was awesome. There was a sea of colour everywhere I looked; saris every colour of the rainbow, to fluorescent pink and green. The place was vibrant and alive. The continual hooting and chirping of horns from the hundreds of tuc tucs was loud, but sporadic, and alerted us all to their presence. They seemed to travel every direction at once, and I have absolutely no idea why I saw so few accidents.

The houses along the roadside were small, and almost unfinished, with whole extended families sat at their doorways way looking questioningly at our staring faces.

Some houses were made from old pieces of wood and mud, with plastic bags held with whatever they could find onto the roof to give them some protection. It was monsoon time.

Small shops appeared now and then, they sold everything…razorblades, fizzy drinks, string, vegetables, T-shirts, homemade Indian snacks, and always some chai.

My main memory from my visit was, of course, meeting my sponsor child Jerolin. She is eight, and she and her Mum travelled some distance just to see me, which amazed me. After meeting her and sharing some cake we both got to know each other better. We did some colouring, which she loved, and then started playing games with the other children that had come to meet their sponsors too. Jerolin’s mum was so sweet, and with sign language and a few words, told us how much the money we send to sponsor her daughter helps the whole family. Jerolin’s Mum brings up the children on her own and finds it difficult. The average wage in that area is just over a pound a day.

Although education is free in India a lot of children don’t go because they can’t afford the books, clothes, travelling money and all the other stuff they should have. The £8.00 I give a month helps her buy this, and £2.00 of that money is saved for the future to be used for further education or training.

It was very real getting to know my sponsor child and showed me just how much help the family were getting from my money. I must admit seeing all of this did make me so grateful of the life that I have back here in the UK. Whilst there we also visited places that the project were helping. I met children who could only pull themselves along the floor on their tummies; twenty year old females that lay in cots and were the size of babies; ladies that society didn’t want because of mental health problems; teenagers who were delighted to be training to become nurses and an amazing team of people who make the project function.

Now home, I wish to tell everyone about my experience and just how much more help is needed.

It’s not only children who need sponsoring, there are many people of various ages. I was introduced to a granny who was nearly 100 and had been found abandoned in a skip a few years ago.

Arundel at War

by Rosemary Hagedorn NO, not the usual wars, but the one people forget, the English Civil War. The fact that there was a major battle at Arundel, in the winter of 1643-44, might well come as a surprise.

In the generally accepted headlines, Sir Ralph Hopton is credited with advancing through Sussex, taking Harting, Cowdray and Petworth, finally capturing Arundel, and then the castle. His one-time friend, now enemy General, Sir William Waller, at once retook Cowdray and Petworth. He stormed into Arundel, drove the royalists into the castle and subjected them to a siege, finally starving them into surrender.

As a local historian I thought I understood the story, but wanted to know more. I started by looking in recent histories. I soon found that the Arundel campaign rated barely a few paragraphs, and that from author to author facts changed. Even simple details such as who led the royalist troops, and exactly what they did, were unclear.

Which version was correct?

Thanks to the internet, and a lot of detective work, I was able to assemble a collection of 17th century personal memoirs The gold standard for historical research is documentation of the period, preferably with eyewitness accounts of the action, so my first challenge was to find this information – not easy when almost all the books and papers are out of print. Thanks to the internet, and a lot of detective work, I was able to assemble a collection of 17th century personal memoirs, war reports, letters, and 19th century antiquarian histories. The discovery of some articles written for the Sussex Archaeological Society, and news-sheets from the Civil War period held on microfiche at the Worthing Record Office, provided new information.

I also needed to understand the ground, which is a key factor in any battle. Mark Phillips, who trained as a landscape archaeologist, was very helpful. He took aerial photos to provide an overview of the battle area.

Together we walked the lines of the old earthworks and 48

town walls and tried to make sense of the accounts of what happened in relation to the existing features. We realised that Arundel Park was to the west of the town at that period, not the north east, where it is now. Road layouts have changed.

It was soon clear from both these exercises that assumptions had been made by early historians which then passed into fact and were repeated by the next generation. Some of these were mistaken. In addition, the accounts given by Hopton in his memoir, and Waller in his dispatches fail to agree.

For example almost all historians say, basing this on one of Waller’s reports, that he recaptured Cowdray Castle after Hopton had taken it. Hopton, on the other hand, bemoans the fact that he could not garrison Cowdray because a parliamentary force had got there first!

They cannot both be right. Careful examination of the timeline, and supporting evidence suggests that Hopton was right and Waller was mistaken.

It is hard to place the lines of attack. Waller writes of assaulting ‘works’ at Arundel near ‘a pond’ and ‘a mill’ (usually said to be at Swanbourne). However, there was another mill, a windmill behind the castle, near where the Hiorne Tower now stands, and second pond, the Great Pond in Park Bottom, once the castle fishstew. Documentary evidence suggests that the pond in question may in fact be the latter, and that a main assault line was from the west of town, not the north.

It is unusual, and fortunate, to have two eyewitness accounts of the same battle from different sides.

The memoir of Colonel Birch (who led a regiment of parliamentary infantry) describes his attack on a ‘rampart’ and a cavalry charge by the royalists to drive him back. Colonel Bampfield (who was the real commander of the royalist forces on the ground, not Hopton,) was leading the same charge. Splicing together these two accounts provides a gripping first hand description of the fighting.

Ultimately the royalists stood no chance and their capitulation was a foregone conclusion. Hopton was unable to relieve them. Despite that, they held out for 18 days in the face of lack of water, starvation and an outbreak of dysentery and typhus. The latter disease spread into the Parliamentary forces.

Neither side reports numbers of casualties and fatalities.

It is clear from reading the accounts that these were much higher than previously reported. Many died in

battle, but far more from the fever. The church record, written hastily in arrears in March 1644, lists about 60 Arundel men women and children, buried in St Nicholas churchyard: these probably died of typhus rather than as a result of the battle.

The loss of Arundel ruined King Charles’ plans to march into East Sussex and Kent in the spring of ‘44, and then, having secured the South, to make another attempt to take London. The war moved north, and the early part of the conflict now known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, was submerged by later dramatic events.

The location of the soldiers’ burials is a mystery. It seems likely that somewhere in the vicinity of the castle is a lost mass grave.

The book resulting from this research, Arundel at War 1642-1644, is scheduled for publication in April 2018. The paperback will be available through Arundel Museum shop, for a limited promotional period at a discount. Arundel Castle Tulip Festival and New Plant Fair Martin Duncan, Head Gardener at Arundel Castle, outlines plans for this year’s Tulip Festival and the launch of the Castle’s first ever Plant Fair on 29th April.

ARUNDEL Castle has created one of the most exceptional Tulip Festivals, with one of the most impressive displays of tulips in the country; remarkably the castle found they had Dutch visitors coming over especially to see the tulips at Arundel, a very different setting to Keukenhof but just as exciting!

The Arundel Castle Tulip Festival will feature 60,000 tulips with 120 different named tulips planted throughout the castle gardens and grounds, showing how versatile tulips can be in any garden or landscape situation. Last year the castle produced the first ever known labyrinth of tulips, positioned in the Collector Earl’s Garden using 10,000 ‘red Apeldoorn’ tulips. A few of the main attractions for the Tulip Festival will be in The Collector Earl’s Garden, officially opened by HRH Prince of Wales in 2008, with the enormous terracotta pots filled with the beautiful ‘Purple Dream’ ; ‘Purple Prince’ and ‘Pink Impression’ accompanied by ‘Crown Imperials and ‘Forget-Me-Nots’. The history of the tulip Tulip history is fascinating as it’s filled with intrigue, skulduggery, broken hearts and instant fortunes made on a stock exchange. The first known “Tulipmania” was in Turkey during the time of Suleiman I, commonly Valery Grergiev Fringe Tulips

known as Suleiman the Magnificent in the west and “Kanuni” in his realm (1520-1566), when tulips were cultivated and developed for the Sultan and his entourage. The period during the reign of Ahmed III (1703-1730), was known as “The Age of the Tulip” as they were highly prized as a symbol of great wealth and prestige. During this time the first known Tulip Festival was held at night during a full moon. Hundreds of vases were filled with stunning tulips, lanterns were used to cast enchanting light over the gardens and all the guests had to wear colours which harmonised with the tulips.

By the 1630’s tulips became hugely sought after as a symbol of wealth and prosperity and became prized possessions of emperors, kings, queens, royals and the aristocracy. Due to the huge price of the tulips, mirrors were used in gardens to give the illusion that the owner had many more than they actually had!

Dutch businessman, realising the potential in trading the bulbs as they were reaching very high prices which between 1636 and 1637, started the Dutch ‘Tulipmania’.

A single bulb could be sold for the same price as house in a good area of Amsterdam, the tulip literally being worth more than its weight in gold, or seven years wages for a skilled carpenter! Fortunately tulip bulbs today are far more affordable and always give a magnificent show.

Plant Fair – 29th April Arundel Castle’s first ever plant fair will be held on 29th April within the castle grounds and it will consist of local Sussex and Kent nurseries. This fair is for garden enthusiasts to view and to purchase a wide range of plants for their gardens and at the same time they will be able to view the whole of Arundel Castle’s landscape and gardens. There will also be gardeners on hand to answer those never ending questions, whether it’s for your vegetable garden, lawns or simply where best to place you newly acquired plant!

The Snowdrop Trust celebrates 25 years!

by Lucy Ashworth THIS year, 2018, The Sussex Snowdrop Trust is celebrating their 25th anniversary since the Trust was founded. In 1993, Di Levantine, Kate Shaw and Frank Snell were made aware of the distressing lack of support for families who had been told that their child had a life threatening, or even worse a terminal illness.

The Trust was formed to address the gap in the care that was needed.

Parents wanted the help of a nurse, qualified to care specifically for children who have been diagnosed with illnesses such as heart and lung disorders, brain tumours, cancers, cystic fibrosis, leukaemia or any other life threatening illness. A professional, who could show them how to care for their child, confidently. Parents are on duty 24 hours a day and need support to be able to cope hour by hour, day by day. The snowdrop was chosen as a symbol for the Trust, as it means hope and consolation in the language of flowers.

Starting with nothing but the knowledge that this service was vital and urgent, the founders began fund raising. They worked closely with Dr Ann Wallace, the Community Paediatric Consultant and Beth Connolly, the Ward Sister of the children’s ward at St Richards Hospital, who originally identified the short fall in the community care for these special children and their families. Calling on the generosity of incredible friends and supporters they enabled the Snowdrop Care at Home team to develop - little by little.

There is now a team of Community Children’s Nurses, led by Jane Evans, the very first Snowdrop nurse and the Snowdrop counsellor, Phil Portway.

Snowdrop nurses visit children at home. They take bloods, administer medications, monitor the child’s condition, and give advice. They are able to give parents the time to talk about the diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis and to explain to the child what is happening as well. The nurses become friends, while maintaining their professionalism. They support parents and discuss their concerns, fears and worries.

Parents are deeply affected by the whole 54

experience of being a parent of a child who has been diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Seeing other children who are so ill in hospital is traumatic but being with your own child who is seriously ill, is indescribable.

Families can’t wait to be home. As one mother said recently, ‘I wanted to be able to look out of my own window. To put on my own kettle and to sleep in my own bed’. Home is where you can be yourself, and where it is possible for family and friends to come day and night if they choose and where they can all support each other.

Snowdrop nurses are on hand when children come home from hospital. It is an extremely anxious time.

Full of unknowns, and the most frightening period in that families’ life. Due to the wonderful care shown by the Snowdrop Care at Home Team, the parent’s anxieties can be eased.

Most children live to adulthood, but sadly, sometimes conditions are incurable or treatments stop working.

One of the reasons Snowdrop was founded, was to give children and parents the choice to be at home. During the past 25 years, nearly every child who has become terminally ill, has been able to be at home. This is because of the exceptional nurses who have already been part of the family’s life, having cared for them throughout the child’s illness. They are always with the family during the most difficult and sad times.

The nurses approach their work with such great diligence that, no matter the severity of the situation, every child is treated with the same love and expertise.

They in turn love, and trust their nurses. Families are forever grateful and forever indebted to these extremely courageous, kind and professional individuals.

Snowdrop also helps financially in many ways. When a mother gives up work to look after her child, the worries over money can be the last straw. Parents can

travel thousands of miles, taking their child to and from hospitals and visiting them. Snowdrop offers support.

Today there are 74 ‘Snowdrop children’ who have a life threatening illness and are being cared for by the Snowdrop Care at Home Team. Referrals to the Snowdrop Team come straight from the Hospital Consultant that the child has been seen by. The nurses contact the families immediately and visit them as soon as possible.

The Counsellor is available to all members of the family.

The impact of a diagnosis turns their lives upside down, as it is a very distressing and traumatic time.

It is overwhelming for parents and siblings. A child with such an illness, has to deal with so much change and anxiety over health issues and the unknown. The Counsellor deals with families coping with bereavement and other problems surrounding caring for their sick child. Children are able to explore their feelings in a relaxed environment away from home, in a non -clinical environment, at our Walberton Hub. The Team has cared for hundreds of children over the years. The charity depends on the generosity of the community to continue to help Snowdrop children and their families for the foreseeable future. The Trust receives no support from the national children’s charities, as the charity does not require support for dedicated projects such as buildings etc. The nurses and the counsellor, are the most important aspect of the care that the Trust provides and this is the focus for their fund raising.

25 years on, and the need to raise funds becomes ever more challenging, with so many worthy causes in the local area. Di Levantine, Co- Founder and Co- Chair, comments, ” Throughout the years, I have visited many churches,

flower shows, Balls, musical concerts, as well as talked to schools and community groups, throughout the county. I love meeting people and it is always such a delight so see so many groups who want to help. We support families from Arundel to Emsworth, Midhurst to Easebourne.

This year promises some wonderful events, which I hope the community of Arundel will embrace and help us fundraise. We have our annual walk at Arundel Park on Sunday 13th May, by kind permission of His Grace the Duke of Norfolk and a joint fundraiser for St. Leonard’s Church at South Stoke with a retro evening and outdoor cinema on Saturday 8th September.

Meeting Snowdrop families who have been supported by our charity has always been a very special part of my role throughout the years. I have so much respect and empathy for the Snowdrop parents, carers and the courageous children.

It is vital that we continue to recognise the importance of nursing care at home. Children want to be surrounded by their favourite things and their families. Anyone who comes into contact with the Trust understands the ethos. We have been fortunate to have made connections over the years with various communities. They have been so generous, not only with donations but with their time, organising events themselves to raise funds for the charity.

We must continue to raise awareness of the charity and primarily the role of the Snowdrop Nurses and our Counsellor. They are essential to the wonderful Snowdrop Care at Home team. They make such a difference to the lives of so many local children who have life –threatening illnesses. The Mid Arun Valley – simply brimming with life Jacqueline Thompson BSc (Hons) MSc MCIEEM, Consultant Ecologist and Botanist, outlines the 2018 MAVES Report results.

THE Mid Arun Valley Environmental Survey group have now been surveying this area for two years, and the landscape does not fail to delight and amaze us with its astonishing biodiversity.

In 2016 we described the rich mosaic of habitats and can now confirm that this ancient landscape supports no fewer than fifteen Section 41 habitats and a higher number of Section 41 species. These are habitats and species ‘of principal importance for the purpose of conserving biodiversity’ comprising those most threatened, in greatest decline, or where the UK holds a significant proportion of the world’s total.

Less common habitats include chalk streams, fed with waters that have percolated through the chalk bedrock of the South Downs to the north, pockets of fen, alder carr and veteran trees.

The Binsted Woods Complex, at the heart of the Mid Arun Valley, has numerous veteran trees. Such trees, due to their great age, have developed features such as hollows, dead wood and fissures that are of immense importance providing homes for an assortment of life including birds, dormice, bats and beetles. Of the 13 species of bats recorded, we now know that many are breeding here, using warm, safe cavities within these trees as maternity roosts. This includes very rare species such as Bechsteins and Alcathoes.

Dormice have declined nationally and continue to show significant downward trends due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The UK holds 25 % of the world’s population of this species, and yet its national conservation status has been assessed as ‘unfavourable – bad and deteriorating.’ Dormice are thriving in the Mid Arun Valley with evidence of dispersal through the valley and likely to the wider area from its stronghold in the Binsted Woods Complex.

We previously reported on the 400 species of beetles found in the woodland, and have now confirmed that the area is important for saproxylic beetles (some of our rarest species relying on dead and decaying wood associated with veteran trees). Invertebrate surveys of the surrounding habitats have found 551 species, including 38 species of conservation concern. We continue to record approximately 28 species of butterfly each year including the stunning Purple Emperor and White Admiral.

We spoke of the corridors radiating out from the woodland across the valley in the form of ancient treelines, hedgerows and shaws, extending the reach of the woodland, connecting to smaller woodland blocks and providing dispersal routes for all. Wet corridors are equally significant, forming a watery network throughout the woodland, fields and across the Arun

floodplain. These link wetland habitats in the greater area allowing species to breed and disperse, such as the nationally declining water vole and European eel.

We have found hidden treasures such as thousands of toads making their annual pilgrimage to ancestral breeding sites, hundreds of swans lazily littering fields in the winter, cuckoos arriving in springtime to cheat unsuspecting birds and badgers busily excavating significant tracts of countryside.

Assemblages of habitats and species as seen in the Mid Arun Valley are a remnant of a formerly far more connected countryside with less intensive farming.

There are few remaining areas such as this, with a mosaic of uncommon habitats, habitat linkages to the wider countryside and dark night-time skies - no wonder the Mid Arun Valley is simply brimming with life.

IN the last issue I ran this photograph taken in the late 1940’s of the class of schoolchildren at the convent school in what is now The Priory. I have since received several emails and one call about the school which obviously holds special memories for many pupils. I am indebted to Moira Plunkett (now Bain) for her memories of mid-morning bottles of milk, the Castle laundry run by the nuns, and an unusual venue for gym: ‘We used to go to gym classes in the undercroft of the Baron’s Hall. We’d line up at the porch, go through the heavy door in the corner, through the chapel garden, through the archway and into the castle grounds. It was a few minutes’ walk and we’d be through the Barbican’s long passage with the portcullis above our heads, past the armoury with helmets etc. on display then down some stairs to our gym lesson.’

Moira’s brothers Ian and Stuart and her sister, Sarah, all went to the school. Their family left for what was then

Rhodesia but now all live in South Africa.

Roberta Considine spoke to me and identified Caryl Highton whose mother was the sculptor responsible for the Statue of the Crucifixion in the St Nicholas graveyard. Caryl moved to Australia.

Finally Ann Dundas (now Rowe) wrote to me from Wales where she now lives, having spent most of her adult life in Africa. She recognised a number of the unidentified children.

MILL ROAD STREAM IMPROVEMENTS

I WOULD like to pass very grateful thanks for the band of volunteers who cleared the streets after Arundel by Candlelight. Michelle and Phil Smith, together with Kirsti and Richard Marsh, Kirsti Wilgoss, Steve Coppard and Claire Seaby took it upon themselves to buy rubbish sacks and clear the streets of all the rubbish. (The BIFFA 100 litre bins had been full from the 1st December.)

None of these volunteers were business owners - they did it to help the town recover quickly from an amazing Arundel by Candlelight.

WELL DONE AND THANK YOU I WONDER if everyone realises the work that goes into the erecting and lighting of our magnificent tree in the centre of Arundel.

First the lights all have to be checked by the Rotarians and an electrician; the tree which is kindly donated by the Castle, has to be selected and cut down, then brought in on a large tractor; next ....on a freezing winters morning at 6.30 am in the dark, Rotarians and some estate workers erect the tree and decorate it with the lights. The following day the electrician has to return to make sure it is all safe and then Rotary erects the

EVERYONE should know how important exercise is these days. It is crucially important as one gets older, or as someone once said to me, “as one approaches the departure lounge”! I do not intend entering that particular lounge just yet and one of the ways I manage to avoid it is by regular walking. The other is by swimming a mile each week in two sessions – but that is another story!

My regular walking most days takes me along Mill Road to Swanbourne Lake and the Wildfowl Trust, which is 1.8 miles all told, back to my home. What has been a particular delight recently is to see the vast improvements to the roadside bank of the stream. It has been levelled out in quite a cunning way and the whole aspect is really pleasing to the eye. What I have found interesting is to see how quickly the grass (or weeds!) is beginning to grow back, so that hopefully, come the spring, the whole bank will be green again. I must also mention the improved safety aspect for young children.

Grateful thanks are due to the Norfolk Estate Trustees for this enhancement of the environment for the general enjoyment and benefit of the public.

ARUNDEL CASTLE GARDENS IN THE WINTER I’VE recently moved to Arundel having previously lived in Petworth. One of the benefits of living in Petworth 63

was the freedom to walk round the grounds of house and enjoy seeing all the seasons. I find it sad people are not given the opportunity to visit Arundel Castle all year round. Seeing gardens progress throughout the year is very interesting- it’s not all about the summer flowering period. I don’t think if a small charge was levied people would mind if it meant increasing the visiting periods. I also feel that the money could be used for the upkeep of the grounds/gardens. I see from the Magazine a new Manager has taken over- hopefully he can help with opening the Gates!

STEPHEN MANION, MANAGER OF ARUNDEL CASTLE, REPLIES: DURING the winter closed season we undertake a considerable amount of major works around the castle, grounds and gardens. We need to ensure the castle is maintained for future generations and that there are new attractions for visitors. This year, for example, includes large scale conservation programme on walls, repairs to roofs, irrigation system installed and new developments in the garden. These projects require routes for access and works areas to be closed off for safety, which would be a risk to any visitors. I hope that your readers will visit and enjoy the changes when we open on 30th March.

THE BELL EMILIE Bruell’s letter rightly gives credit to John Munro and Joe Hayes for the launch and early years of The Bell. But particular credit is due to Marian Webb, who kept the magazine going for many years in the difficult period when funding was no longer forthcoming from West Sussex County or Arun District, 64

as it had been previously. Furthermore, the proliferation of free magazines meant that advertising revenue became increasingly difficult to secure, and Marian was ably assisted by Anne Martin during this time. We owe them both a debt of gratitude.

EMBROIDERERS’ GUILD THE Arundel & District Branch is a new addition to the Embroiderers’ Guild UK and was set up in November 2017. Membership is open to everyone who shares an interest in embroidery and textiles, whether an experienced embroiderer or a beginner keen to learn new techniques. Meetings will be held at Arundel Museum on the fourth Wednesday of each month starting at 2pm.. The 2018 programme includes guest speakers at several meetings, demonstrating their expertise in a specific technique or genre. There will also be ‘Simply Sewing’ afternoons when members can learn from each other and take part in branch joint projects.

All meetings are open to visitors and those interested in joining the Guild, at £5 per session. Visitors may attend a maximum of three sessions before joining as a full member. Branch members have priority when booking a place at meetings and demonstrations.

DOG FOULING THE residents of Tarrant Street have for some time been afflicted by a dog walker who allows the animal to foul the footway. Some residents do not have front gardens and can step down from their doors into a disgusting mess! This is not acceptable!

INSPIRATION IN NEW ZEALAND FORTUNATE enough to visit New Zealand over Christmas 2017, one aspect was very moving. At lunchtime on 22 February 2011 a 6.3 earthquake shook Christchurch. News of it travelled around the world.

One hundred and eighty-five people were killed and many more were injured. There have been other quakes before and since, some even more powerful according 66

PHARMACY CAMPAIGN UPDATE HERE is an update on the Campaign For An “In-Town” Pharmacy in Arundel.

June and I were welcomed to the meeting of The West Sussex Health and Wellbeing Board in Horsham on November 6th last year, where we made a presentation regarding the Campaign . This followed a Report from the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment Steering Group.

Their Report revealed that as of October 12th, they had received 102 responses to the PNA Consultation and 61 of these concerned services for Arundel.

Our presentation was very well received and there were words of support from several Board Members, including the Chairman Cllr. Amanda Jupp.

Our aim was to ensure that our concerns for Arundel would be included in the final version of the PNA Report, which following approval at their next meeting on January 25th, would then be published in February.

I attended the January meeting and with a final total of around seventy responses, Arundel is included in the final approved version .

However, the criteria the PNA Steering Group use regarding travelling to a local pharmacy, as set out by the Department of Health, means that the pharmacy we have is considered sufficient.

The criteria considered reasonable are : a travel time of 20 minutes, walking or driving , and a travel distance, by car or public transport, of less than 6 miles. The same criteria apply to residents and visitors alike.

Obviously these criteria do not assist our Campaign aims. We believe the travel times and distances are far too broad. However, these “one size for all” guidelines, apply for every PNA throughout the Country.

We have always believed that Arundel is a “Special Case” and there are many genuine reasons as to why an *In-Town” Pharmacy, as well as the existing one, is needed .

Being in the published PNA Report, we can but hope that a Pharmaceutical company will read it and think of Arundel as a possibility. The PNA Criteria do not prohibit any interested party from applying for a contract. In the end it is only they, with approval from the NHS, who can bring it about.

We hope that we have succeeded in doing everything

that could be done to make the case. We will now just have to wait and see, knowing that we have given it our very best shot.

At the January meeting I was also able to mention the recent introduction of charges by Lloyds for Home Delivery of Prescriptions.- £60 for a year or £35 for six months. Delivery charges are not something covered by the PNA. However, some of the Board Members expressed surprise and shock over this and felt the Board should perhaps look into possible ways of helping people who can’t afford it or have difficulty arranging for someone to collect their prescriptions. We’ll see what happens.

BY-PASS THANKS again to you and your team for producing such a good, interesting magazine. After reading the letters on the Arundel Bypass in the last edition of The Bell, I felt compelled to write to you although I suppose it’s all rather academic now.

I was really cheered to read the letters from Christian Doyle and David Macpherson with regard to the proposed Arundel Bypass as they echoed so many of my own feelings on the subject.

At first I had thought that the cheapest least disruptive option would be the best choice but as I completed the HE questionnaire, I changed my mind. I came to the conclusion that even this option was too big a price to pay for a few minutes saved on road journeys, particularly as the Chichester and Worthing sections of the road have yet to be finalised Why not try some of David Macpherson’s suggestions regarding more cycle tracks (I would really appreciate this) more parking at Ford Station direct bus routes along the A27 and in addition a 40 mph speed limit between The White Swan and the Ford roundabout coming into Arundel from Chichester. This might at least keep traffic moving at busy times of day.
