William Longhauser

“ His work has been published in Graphic Posters, Graphic Annual, Communications Arts magazine, and Idea magazine ”

By Jessica Nanez William Longhauser is a great example of a modern designer. He has won countless awards for many of his works. They have also been featured in many publications and exhibits around the world.

The design that I chose of William Longhauser is that of the Christmas card for The Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2002. I thought it would be appropriate with Christmas just around the corner.

“His work has been published in Graphic Posters, Graphis Annual, Communications Arts magazine, Idea magazine, The Annual of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and Print’s Design Annual. His posters are in the permanent collection of the Newark Museum of Art, The Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York, and the Musee D’Histoire Contemporaine, Paris,”(longhauser.com).

Longhauser uses visual imagery in his work very strongly. He uses a postmodern design which utilizes geometric shapes and spatial arrangement. He uses a bold red color for Santa’s geometric hat. He also uses simple circles to make up the details in the face such as the eyes nose and cheek. In addition he uses a kinetic lines to represent both Santa’s beard and hat detail. Other elements make up the piece a square as well as serves as an element of the beard also.

William began his studies of Graphic Design at the College of Design, Art, and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati. Receiving a Bachelors of Fine arts degree from there he continued on to Indiana University receiving a Masters of Fine Arts. He also received schooling from the School of Design in Basel, Switzerland. In addition, he taught in the graphic design department at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia.

I believe Longhauser executed this project successfully the shapes and color are unanimous with Santa and possess a postmodern motif. He designed a simple yet thoughtful design utilizing colors, shape, line and placement. All these are important elements in creating visual imagery.

He also is currently the president of Longhauser Design. “Longhauser Design, a design firm offering comprehensive visual communications services to a wide range of clients, from corporations and nonprofit organizations to educational and cultural institutions,”(longhauser.com).
