MEETTHEDESIGNER

Study Model

Connectingpeoplewitha sitewasthemainthemeof thisproject.Afterchoosing anappropriatesitelocation withincertainparametersof campus,thesiteinstallation ideawasthenextobstacle.

Thinkingofawayofhowto connectpeoplewiththeidea ofsharingkindnessand positivitywasthetheme chosen.Fromthis,using postcardswithpositive messagesandnatural elementalslikeleavesto formthemainfocalpointof thewordkindhelpedconvey thismessagetoeveryoneon campus.

2 - Topological Transformations

Thisprojectrequiredchoosinganobjecttotransformand showthroughthehorizontal,vertical,“eggcrate”,andfree formmaterial.ChoosingaDocMartens,thehorizontal formallowedthedetailsofshape,thickness,andformof theboottobeemphasized.Thehorizontalformallowed theshapesofcurvesandimperfectionsoftheleather materialtobeemphasized.The“eggcrate”formallowed theshape,interiordepth,andthicknesstobeemphasized.

Finally,bychoosingwiretheframeworkoftheboot assistedwithincludingthedetailsoftheseamsand sewingtobeemphasized.Additionally,theobjectwas representedthroughorthographicandaxonometric drawingstoemphasizecertaindetailsatspecificviews.

Throughiterationsofideas,itwas requiredtocarveintoanartgumeraser. Thefirstrowshowshowthesimpleshape hastoberepeatedtostampa separated,touching,andoverlapping pattern.Thesecondrowshowsacolor wheelbeingthe“primary”colorsof palettetobecarriedthroughtherestof theboards.Theplaidemphasizedhow the3“primary”colorsinteractwhen overlappedtocreate“secondary”colors. Thecolorpalettewasthenusedtoadd colortooneoftheoriginalstamped patterns.Inthethirdrow,paperhadto befolded,deconstructed,colored,and refolded.Thecolorwaschosento specificareastoemphasizethedepthof thefoldedpaperwiththecolorpalette.

Theoriginaltextile,“MexicanPlaid”by DorothyLiebes,isawoventextilein whichemphasizescolor.Studyingthis textileallowstheviewertoseethe hierarchyofthetextilewhereitisbroken upbetweenitsforeground, middleground,andbackground.The 2-Dmodelhasthreelayerswithinitto allowthedifferentpartsandcolorsof thetextiletostandout.The3-Dmodel takesasimilarapproach,andtakesthe textiletoa8x8x8inches.Thefrontal viewofthecubeshowsthehierarchyof thecolorswiththewovenpattern.The sideviewofthecubeshowseachlayer andhowsomelayersarewoven together.Thetoppiecesstartfromthe frontandcarryoverthetopandbottom ofthecubebringingthewholewoven piecetogether.Anaxonometric, orthographicdrawingsofcolor placement,andanalysisdiagramsof colorplacement,patterns,etc.are shownaswell.

Thisprojectisderivedfromthe painting,“DancesattheSpring”by FrancisPicabia.Studyingthemodel foritsconcepts,hierarchy,and valuesallowsarecreationand analysisdiagramstobemade.

Takingconceptsfromthepainting, abasreliefwasmadeto emphasizethemovementand intertwiningofthetwoladies dancinginthepainting.Asectionof thebasreliefwastakentobe createdwithwoodtocapturea similarfeelingfromthebasrelief.

Emphasizingthecurvesofthebas relief,thecurvedandintertwined woodwascreatedforthe model.Thecurvesmadeasite thatpeoplecouldexplore.

Addingontothewoodenmodelpreviouslyconstructed,a chapterfrom“InvisibleCities”,whichshowcasedfantastical cities,wasappliedtocreateasiteplan.Inthecity Valdrada,isalocationwheretwoloverscoexistwithno loveandtheplaceisnotequalnorsymmetrical.Theupper partofthemodelshowcasesthecurvesandhowthey intertwineandinteractwithstringthatbringsinthe connectivityandshadowswhenlighthitsthem.Thecurves bringshadetodifferentareasdependentonthelight position.Additionally,theswingsonthetopandelevator aretobeexploredandemphasizetheconceptofmotion tothebottomofthemodel.Thebottomofthemodelisnot symmetricaltothetopandhasmoreofastraightforward pathwithadditionalflowofbringingthecurvesdownfrom thetopthatcitizenscouldexploreandclimb.

StudyingtheworldofphotographerLucienHervè,the significanceoftheartistisseenthroughhisarchitectural experiencesofmovingthroughspaceinintervals, isolatedparts,andseeinggeometrythroughthecasted shadows.Hisphotographywasstrongandconveyeda senseofspace,texture,andstructurethroughhishigh contrastphotosbetweenlightanddark.

Heemphasizedbuildingstructuresanddetailsthrough hisbroadsideandhead-onshots.Hisphilosophywas “lessismore”bynotallowingtheviewertoseethe entirebuildingononewideviewangleshot,butthrough snippetsofthebuildinginvariousshotsandangles.His importantwasreflectedthroughhisworkandearned himthetitleofhavingthe“soulofanarchitect”

Mostweeksrequiredthe explorationofworkingwithrequired materialstocreatea4x4x4cube, cylinder,andeventuallyexploratory object.Thebeginningrequirements wereplatonicobjects,andmoved intoformsallowingexplorationof freedomwiththerequired materials.Eachweeknewskills werelearnedthroughexplorationof materialsandnewtools.Crafting skillswerelearnedandimproved uponwiththeadditionofdrawing skillsandphotographicskillsusing lightingandcomposition.

00 - Semester Reflection

Animportantthemediscoveredthroughthiscoursewasnevergivingupandallowingcreativitytodriveprojects.At thebeginningofDesign1,Ihonestlydidnotknowwhattoexpectfromthisclass.FromthefirstdayIlearnedthatthisclass requireskeytimemanagementskills,learningtoapplypreviousknowledgeandexplore.Learningfromthefirstiterations andideasthatdonotalwaysworkandcanbeimprovedupon,andthenthatthinkingmoreabstractandoutofthebox takesmeplaces.ThedesignstudentIstartedoutashasdefinitelyevolvedfromtheskillsIlearnedinthisclass.NotonlydidI learnedmoreabilitiesandskillsIpossess,butalso Ilearnedhowtoimprovemywork.Improvinguponmyworkevolved throughtheuseofexploringnewtools,techniques,materials,andoverallcreativityoftryingnewtechniquesandthingsI neverworkedwithbefore.Fromthefirstprojecttothelast,IlearnedhowmuchmoreIamcapableofthanIeverthoughtI waswithcreativity,drawingskills,andtakingdeliverablesrequireddesignedinauniqueway.ThemoreIlearnedfromeach projectandeachcube/cylinderrequiredmostweeksallowedmyskillsandmindsettogrow.Iknowtakingtheseskillsinto myfuturewillonlyimprovegreatlyasIlearnandexperimentwithmore.Myskills,mymindset,andmywaysofthinking will continuetoevolveinanindividualandcollaborativesettings.

Myunderstandingofspatialawarenesshaschangedandallowedamoreabstractthinkingtobeapartofeveryday viewtothinking.Takingarchitectureclassesinhighschoolwasmoretraditional,thiscoursechangedmymindsetof placementandspatialawarenesswithinarchitecturethroughthesedesignprojectsthatareveryunliketraditional architecture.Fromthefirsttolastproject,Ilearnedmanyvaluableconceptsthatassistedmetogrowtowardsthinking abouthowpeopleseethegiveninvariousanglesandsides,andhowinteractthroughandwithaspace/object.

Intheend,thissemestertaughtmethekindofdesignerIstartoffascanchangewithgainingmoreknowledge, experimentingwithmyskills,thinkingbeyondtheobvious,andwithmorepracticeusingtheseskillsevenifitseems repetitive.WorkingwithskillsIalreadyhad,improvinguponthem,andgainingnewskillscarriedmethrougheacheach project.ThisallowedmetoseewhereIstartedtowhereIendedupinonlyinonesemesteroflearning,experimenting,and designing.ItwillbeinterestingtoreflectuponDesign1inthefutureasIcontinuemyjourneytobeanarchitect.
