Exploring the roles mitochondria play in human health, and how to optimize mitochondrial function through personalized nutrition

What are the functions of mitochondria in the human body? Why might they stop working properly and what can happen as a result? How can personalized nutrition help to optimize mitochondrial function and prevent or address chronic conditions? This innovative book explores the incredibly complex biochemical roles of mitochondria in health and disease. When healthy, mitochondria provide us with ninety percent of our body's energy. When unhealthy, this can lead to many chronic and degenerative conditions including cancer and Alzheimer's disease. This guide helps practitioners to identify the mitochondrial dysfunction underlying a wide range of health complaints, and provides inspiration about relevant and emerging mitochondria-supportive dietary regimes and nutrients to explore within the model of personalized nutrition. ‘The scope and detail of conditions covered within this book, combined with functional testing and appropriate interventions, offers a really useful handbook and tool to complement the practitioner in clinic.’ -Nina Bailey BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD (Cantab), RNutr Head of Nutrition at Igennus Healthcare Nutrition

The skills discussed and described in this book can help expand any acupuncturist’s practice through their application. Further advice and information is provided through supplementary online video demonstrations. CONTENTS: Introduction; 1. The Needle; 2. Initial Considerations; 3. The Insertion; 4. De Qi; 5. As well as significantly improving the cosmetic appearance, facial acupuncture also has a strong whole body effect on the health and wellbeing of the person treated, and has a long and distinguished history in Chinese medicine. ‘Based on Five Elements theory, this practical, fully illustrated guide to performing facial enhancement acupuncture... shows in detail the acupuncture points, techniques and equipment used in this procedure... The book is the perfect introduction for acupuncturists and acupuncture students who want to learn how to incorporate this alternative to surgical procedures into their practice.’ – Universal Magazine

xplains the worldview of the classic Chinese medicine E texts and how to apply theory to current clinical practice This book describes in detail the effects and ongoing impacts of trauma on the body and mind and provides the 'missing piece' in the treatment of these stubborn conditions that every practitioner confronts. Heart Shock refers to the systemic impact that emotional and/or physical trauma has on one's physiology and psychology, interfering with one's ability to heal, and also directly attributable to a host of progressive pathology. Synthesizing the teachings of Jeffrey Yuen and the ShenHammer lineage and focusing heavily on psychology, Ross Rosen addresses how to identify, diagnose, and treat Heart Shock from multiple perspectives, providing a multi-faceted approach to treatment, including all the acupuncture channel systems, herbal medicine and the use of essential oils. The approach presented can also be expanded to treat any condition or disease process.

xplains the worldview of the E classic Chinese medicine texts and how to apply theory to current clinical practice Chinese Medicine constantly refers back to its sources in order to initiate the new. Its source code is in the Han Dynasty medical classics, and in this handbook esteemed practitioner and educator Professor Z'ev Rosenberg shares the knowledge from his study of these classic texts and his experiences treating difficult cases. In the tradition of the scholar-physician commentaries, Z'ev Rosenberg comments on the Simple Questions that introduce the core principles of the Inner Canon; explaining how these inform his methodology of diagnosis and advising on how biomedical diseases can be retranslated into sophisticated Chinese medical diagnoses including patterns of differentiation, sequential diagnosis, synchronicity, season, climate and environment. He discusses how Chinese medicine can use unique diagnostic parameters to rebalance the landscape and chronobiology of the body and address the greatest clinical challenges of our time, including the contemporary epidemic of autoimmune disorders. ‘An invaluable encouragement to budding practitioners and seasoned experts alike.’ - Arnaud Versluys, PhD, MD (China), LAc, Director, Institute of Classics in East Asian Medicine

There is no other martial art system or style, internal or external, which combines so many fighting techniques in one practice - and expert Master C S Tang provides lucid, detailed descriptions of the entire training system. Bagua is divided into several sets of exercises, and this guide begins by covering the history behind these, and explaining the basic exercises. It goes on to detail the training in more complex practices - including circle walking, single palm change, the eight palm changes, the special weapons of Bagua, and more. Tying into higher spiritual practices of Daoism, this guide not only covers the practical applications of Bagua Zhang, but explores the reasons why it calms the mind, coordinates the body, and develops health.

Richard Bertschinger offers the first annotated English language translation of this text with practical guidance for Qigong, meditative practice and personal development. With elements of Daoist tradition and drawing on Mayahana Buddhist influences, this ancient guide aims to bring to the fore perceptions and focus on a natural form of breathing for pure meditation. Much of this Chinese practice has been misunderstood and lost over the years, until now. Richard's thoughtful translation and additional comments serve to distribute Shi Jianwu's original message with open interpretations for the individual reader. 'In ancient Chinese culture, the oral traditions and old practices of the Immortals played a major part - especially in the Taoist Dao Zang. Modern research into the Classics does not attach much importance to the study of these texts... Richard has made a truly precious contribution. - Professor Dr Bo-Ying Ma MD, MA, PhD, Chairman of Federation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (UK)

The role of seven aromatic plants in healing and spiritual experience, in both ancient cultures and the modern world Identifying seven aromatic plants with specific psychoactive properties, the author describes the different states of consciousness that are achieved, manipulated, and transformed by the people and cultures that use them in specialized ways, both in the past and in the contemporary world. Focusing on the role that scent plays in healing and spiritual experience, the author explores the use of the fragrant tulsi plant both in Hindu women’s ritual and to treat mental and physical ailments. She analyses the appearance of the lotus in sacred Egyptian customs, and as a model of the process of psychological change through metaphorical journeys, as witnessed in shamanic practice and its relation to the Biblical book of Job. Making a significant contribution to the understanding of the healing state, the book is stimulating reading for all those who work with and are interested in aromatics, the sense of smell, or the nature of spiritual experience. ‘Take seven deep breaths...Abram skilfully weaves a captivating aromatic web - integrating sacred plant stories contained within holy texts as a means of exploring man’s relationship with himself, with healing, with the divine and with the wider world. It emphasizes scent as the cornerstone of integration of self, offering spiritual insights with a rare perspicacity.’ – Rhiannon Lewis, Editor of the International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy

Small Plates | 145

I just love this dish. I could eat it every week and I probably do eat it too often, but there you go! It’s just got so much contrast of flavour and texture – my favourite things. Crunchy toasted pitta pieces, saffron and chilli-infused tomato sauce, cooling yogurt, tangy sumac…and we haven’t discussed the pine nuts, coriander and falafels yet! Pre-make the falafels and keep chilled in the fridge until 10–15 *minutes before you’re ready to fry. Make the tomato sauce. Fry the onion in the oil until soft and translucent. Add the finely sliced garlic and chilli flakes. Stir through for a minute on a medium heat before adding the tomatoes, sea salt and sugar. At this stage add a little water (about a quarter of the tomato tin – swirled around so you get all the juice out) and add the pinch of saffron. Cook for 10–15 minutes on a medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes have broken down and formed a rich sauce with a slight golden hew around the edges from the saffron. Turn the heat right down and begin assembling the dish – keeping an eye on the sauce. Heat the oil in a wok or shallow fryer to approximately 170°C (340°F) or until a piece of bread dropped in sizzles on the top. Carefully fry the falafel in batches of two for 2–3 minutes each – placing them on kitchen paper to dry when done. Keep in a warm oven while you fry the remaining batches. Assemble the dish – toast the pittas and cut them through so each pitta forms two thin pittas. Toast on a low heat if they are still soft – you want them crisp. Break them up and layer them on a sharing plate and sprinkle with 1 tsp of sumac. Pour the hot tomato sauce over them and then evenly drizzle over two-thirds of the yogurt. Place the hot falafel koftas on top like spokes in a wheel and drizzle the remaining yogurt over the dish. Sprinkle another tsp of sumac followed by the pine nuts and a little coriander. Serve immediately – it needs no accompaniment other than perhaps a cold beer.

Understand how early influences can affect child health and development in the context of multidisciplinary treatments Working with babies and children is most successful when therapists have a complete understanding and overview of all appropriate treatment options, and the effects of early influences on child health and development. This book shows therapists how to consider these factors in order to work more effectively within their individual areas of expertise. Contributors from a wide range of disciplines, including Ann Diamond Weinstein, Michael Shea, Carolyn Goh, Graham Kennedy, Matthew Appleton, David Haas, Thomas Harms, Franz Ruppert, Anita Hegerty and Kate Rosati, explore the influence of pregnancy, birth and family dynamics on the physical and mental health of babies and children. They show how these factors relate to common complaints, such as excessive and different types of crying, chronic illnesses and poor immune systems, and behavioural and attachment issues, and how complementary approaches can be best applied to treat these issues. This book also offers helpful advice for working within multidisciplinary teams. Illustrated with case studies and including examples from current research, this book is a valuable resource for therapists from diverse disciplines. ‘This book provides a great overview about how we become conditioned by early life experiences, and clearly outlines important treatment principles when working with babies, children and families. How to facilitate parent-infant groups to help nurture attunement, from late pregnancy to age two Groups for parents, babies and toddlers, spanning the 1001 critical days from late pregnancy up to age two, are an effective way of supporting expectant and new parents by helping them to become more attuned, sensitive and empathic towards their child. Contributors bring together a range of theoretical perspectives to show different ways to facilitate groups that combine mindfulness and psychological insight to promote bonding, attunement and mind-mindedness, and to prevent abuse and neglect. Case examples show a range of techniques that can be used, including baby massage, movement therapy, Video Interaction Guidance, Watch Wait Wonder and psychotherapeutic interventions. Examples include an in-patient motherbaby unit, community and health centres in the UK, to international examples in Greece, Kenya and New Zealand. Chapters illustrate practical and clinical aspects of running groups, the associated challenges, and highlights the importance of professional collaboration in a benign environment. Weaving the Cradle is full of ideas and insights for those already running groups, as well as for those considering it, across health, social care and education settings. ‘This book is a treasure trove of inspiring work with parents and babies in groups. I was impressed by the honesty and reflectiveness of the diverse facilitators and families who reveal their feelings of anxiety, disappointment, irritation and joy, their mistakes and successes. compendium of up-to-date and A evidence-based information on implementing aromatherapy safely and effectively in pregnancy and childbirth Aromatherapy is increasingly incorporated into midwifery practice, particularly in midwife-led units. It is the most commonly used therapy by midwives and birthing practitioners but access to up-to-date safety information is limited. Almost 90% of women may be using complementary therapies during pregnancy and birth and so it is very important that midwives are aware of safe and appropriate use based on contemporary evidence. This book covers safety, effectiveness, evidence, benefits and risks, and legal, ethical and professional issues related to incorporating aromatherapy into maternity care. Useful charts and tables are included for quick reference in clinical practice, making this is the ultimate handbook for using aromatherapy in midwifery practice. The scientific basis behind aromatherapy, including relevant anatomy and physiology, chemistry and pharmacology are covered, as well as a critical appraisal of the contemporary research evidence supporting the use of aromatherapy in maternity care. Essential oil profiles of the oils that can be safely used in pregnancy, birth and postnatally are also included. ‘Aromatherapy in Midwifery Practice provides an evidence-based, safe and accountable guide. Having led in setting up a service using aromatherapy for post-dates pregnant women, I feel such literature is essential for the use of complementary therapy within maternity care settings.’ – Tara Pauley, NIHR Midwife Champion

A guide to the key ingredients of successful communication in helping dialogues for clergy, nurses, therapists, and others Focusing on how someone in need can best be helped, the author identifies the skills and honesty of the person who wants to help as key to how effective this can be. Looking in detail at the nature of boundaries, willingness to speak from a place of authenticity and to be honestly present to the experience of the individual person, and the sensitive and economical use of language, the author shows how people in a state of deep personal crisis can be richly helped. Taking the view that no set response is always right or always wrong, he argues strongly for the importance of going with what is spontaneous and real in the moment, and responding thoughtfully and with integrity to the experience of the person in need. The book is an inspiration to develop deep awareness about the practice of encounter. Focusing on experiences of crisis and anxiety, the author provides many in-depth case examples, and sample scripts with actual questions and answers included. ‘Bent Falk is able to describe difficult problems and dilemmas, with an unrivalled simplicity and accessibility.’

A guide to the key ingredients of successful communication in helping dialogues for clergy, nurses, therapists, and others A fascinating, helpful exploration of the underlying principles of the ancient Chinese discipline of feng shui, with clear and useful recommendations for improving domestic and work environments, the book is grounded in classical Chinese knowledge. One of the cornerstones of the traditional Chinese holistic view of health, feng shui assesses, diagnoses and adjusts the house in relation to the person living in it. The author explains the key universal principles upon which feng shui is based, and the deep relationship between ourselves, our houses and our surroundings. She explains how a classical trained consultant would proceed analysing your house, how to think about each room in your house, and provides practical advice on what to do and what to avoid. With many real life illustrations, the book gives the reader a fundamental understanding of what classical feng shui does, and how to begin to think practically about improving life circumstances. ‘Classical feng shui is an ancient Chinese cosmological, geographical, and architectural art which, for thousands of years, has been crafted towards optimizing one's life. Reni Hagen offers wonderful tips and helpful examples to explain this ancient art. I am sure the authentic feng shui teachings in this book will inspire many to take steps towards a happier, healthier and more prosperous life!’ - Master Zhongxian Wu, lifelong Daoist practitioner

What she says is appropriate for people who are temporarily, or for some other reason, in a sensitive situation - for example, because of stress, trauma or burn-out. It describes the introverted personality type and the highly sensitive trait, highlighting the strengths that come with it such as good listening skills and rich imagination, and suggests ways to overcome the negatives such as the need to avoid overstimulation and over-critical thinking.

An insightful and gently humorous comic about one family’s experience of Lewy Body Dementia, its impact, treatment and sometimes strange symptoms

xploring the interbrain and its E significance to psychology, social communication and group behaviour Digby Tantam presents his ground-breaking theory of the interbrain, the idea that human beings are endlessly connected by a continuous interplay of non-verbal communication of which we are unaware. Considering social smiles and the way emotions can spread from one person to another, he explores the research that shows how our brains are linked and draws out the implications of the interbrain for our understanding of empathy, social communication, psychology and group behaviour. Exploring this often overlooked aspect of our human nature, Tantam demonstrates how the interbrain has huge significance for psychology, psychiatry and sociology and can transform our understanding of war, morality, terrorism, psychopathy and much more.
