OASIS WITHIN THE URBAN SPRAWL

PROJECT BRIEF

Design a practical ADU using small scale architecture (within a 600 sq. ft limit), providing new housing for residents. Discovering a creative way to adapt housing into the existing environment to assist the current housing shortage within New Jersey. Using metaphoric and poetic design concepts to develop an abstract environment that serves a purpose to the desired resident.

CONCEPT

“Oasis within the Urban Sprawl” this metaphoric theory was generated to create a space that allows the resident to escape from reality in a way of creating its own environment within the existing urban area. The purpose of this design is to develop a space that’s private and isolated away from humanity itself, yet allows direct access to nature and its surrounding landscape. The idea of privacy is expressed architecturally, creating different levels of isolation within the home. To capture this concept, the design demonstrated has a series of layers that explore privacy; these different levels of layering are shown through the plan and structure. The abstractness of this design is to emphasize each layer through its jagged shapes that extrude outward and inward to show its purpose of each space that’s within the home.

PROJECT BRIEF

Designing a 160 sq. ft cabin in Marfa Texas for a chosen artist. This design is meant to create a space where one can eat, sleep, work, and find inspiration. Must include all household necessitates such as a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. The materials required were all relating to masonry.

CONCEPT

The Artist chosen for this project creates geometric light sculptures, and gets inspiration from the galaxy stars through the night sky. Marfa TX has many night lights to observe as well as the Marfa mystery lights. Designing a space that fits this artist’s needs, as well as creating a space for the artist to find inspiration. This design includes a kitchen area, bathroom, twin bed loft, balcony, and workspace. The loft is designed to have natural light and transparency from the inside to out so that during the night, stars can be observed. The balcony included in this design is another observational area for the night sky, designed for the artist to pull inspiration from. The workspace created specifically for this artist is enclosed but also has mobile walls that can be pulled out onto the patio. When pushed out, these walls double the size of the work area so the artist has more room to create sculptures.

PROJECT BRIEF

The project aims to design and develop a residential housing complex comprising 40 plus units in Newark, New Jersey. The Location of the lot is situated directly across from the Passaic River. Design must comply with all relevant local zoning ordinances and codes applicable to the area.

CONCEPT

The design aims to provide housing tailored for elderly residents, offering a range of unit types designed to accommodate varying levels of healthcare needs. This includes unit options for independent living suitable for seniors who require minimal assistance, as well as shared living units equipped for residents requiring continuous care with the provision for live-in caretakers. Each unit is thoughtfully equipped with essential amenities and other living necessities. Design offers two outdoor spaces for community use; one designated as a community garden and the other as a social gathering space. The orientation of each unit maximizes panoramic views of the Passaic River, ensuring residents can enjoy the scenic waterfront views.

PROJECT BRIEF

Choosing an appropriate park within the New Jersey Meadowlands and developing an aviary on the chosen site. This design was required to fulfill public and private needs, creating different programs that benefit its surrounding environment. Project requirements were to generate two bird viewing towers as well as an aviary creating a large enclosure where birds are kept.

Concept

Designing an aviary that serves a purpose to its society and environment, the public programs that were created within this design are a library for visitors to come and learn about birds, as well as a classroom that is dedicated for presentations to be held where visitors can gain more knowledge about the species. The private programs that were designed within this aviary include a laboratory where researchers can study the species as well as capture and tag them to study their migration patterns. Another private space in the aviary itself is occupied by the birds and workers, when needed. This design includes two stories that have a full 360 degree viewing area of the aviary, which gives visitors the chance to observe the birds from anywhere on the platforms. The programs within this design sit staggered on top of each other and extrude outward from the aviary to allow a distinct separation of programs as well as separating the private and public areas through the two levels. The two viewing towers are connected and flow through the site which allows two different spots of observation facing opposite sides of the site. The path of the towers lead to the aviary so there is access to each program and creates a control of circulation through its design.
