What Progress Looks Like in An Evolving, Strengthening ASID

In an exciting update, ASID has put into practice its biggest shift in Bylaws and Policies since 2012. Effective October 1, 2022, changes to our bylaws offer increased inclusivity of professionals within the design industry and equitability of member benefits among our members.

The changes were created over the past decade by ASID members on the National Board, the Chapter Support Team, and the ASID Governance Committee.

Here’s what that means for you, our dedicated members:

• The ability for practitioner members to belong to multiple chapter communities.

• We have expanded eligibility to serve on a chapter’s board of directors to include all levels of membership, in any position, and redefined quorum requirements to enable boards to selfgovern.

• Student members will remain only eligible for Student Representative to the Board, a voting position, however, now student members also will enjoy the privilege of casting their votes in both chapter and Society elections – giving this powerful group of individuals an equally powerful voice.

These changes are reflective of a decades-long member narrative to include a diverse range of lived and learned experiences, expanding both the design industry, and contributions to ASID as the premiere interior design professional society.

ASID is the only umbrella professional organization representing all facets of design. We have a responsibility to embrace design evolution and the people executing design. With these changes, ASID is better able to walk the path of our strategic tenants in DE&I, sustainability, advocacy, research, education, governance, and community to serve our mission - to advance the profession and communicate the impact of interior design to enhance the human experience.
