the community building for boat making
"“You have to start from somewhere. Architecture is about building, about understanding, about using your hands,”
In this semester, I've learnt to appreciate the quality of space more and try to adapt to my building. Looking forward for more explorations in future.

The outer shell of the building results in a beautiful facade with ventilation and shading uses. The structure uses timber and is joint by steel frames. It uses double system, hence the outer shell is connected to the building wall with steel frames. The steel structure provides the framework for the buildings, while the wood is used for the walls and roofs. This combination of materials provides strength and durability while also reflecting the Kanak culture.

Missing pieceMyth of the Boat Making
This project is a creation that pays homage to the rich heritage of boat building. It is a perfect blend of old-world craftsmanship and modern adaptations.
The traditional boat making elements that is incorporated into the model add a sense of authenticity and history to the piece. The log symbolises the traditional boat making that is far long in history. The use of natural materials such as wood and tree bark not only represents rustic, but also reflects the traditional and natural way of boat making process.

The rebar and wire mesh represents the industrialisation that engulf the precious heritage. Modernisation has shifted the boat making industry making it a sunset business today.
In summary, the idea of this piece is to pay tribute to the art of traditional boat making.
After all a reflection is needed to see through the importance of boat making especially in Marang history.

Lentera, just like its name, represents the new light of the boat making culture in Marang.
The project is a public building designed for the community of Marang. It functions and serves as a boat making education hub which aims to prosper and glorify the traditional heritage of boat making.
The malay boat making skill is hands-on and they normally do not have drawings of the boats hence the skillset is passed down to generation which makes this heritage even more precious.
The site visit to Marang has renewed my perspective. The people there has welcomed us with open arms which broke the barrier between one and another. Hence in return, I’d like my project to return the positivity and energy that the Marang community truly deserve.

Main column
This column is the main column that supports the roof to the floor. It is formed by two separate timber columns tied with timber planks so that it achieves efficient spread of load. Trusses in between is able to divert and distribute load exerted to the timber planks before reaching to the ground.
