What Is Extrasensory Perception?

What Is Extrasensory Perception?

Extrasensory perception, also referred to as the sixth sense, is the ability to perceive information without using the five physical senses.  There are several types of ESP known to exist such as precognition, clairvoyance, telepathy, and clairaudience.

Here are the major types of ESP in a nutshell:

Precognition – The ability to see into the future.

Precognition

Precognition refers to the ability to see the future. Though the scientific community generally rejects precognition because of the lack of demonstration, many scientific explanations are available to explain it. Experiments conducted by the Parapsychology Laboratory at Duke University show the human mind has a habit along with the ability to subconsciously predict an outcome of events by judging current circumstances. Such predictions, if they later become true, are then related to precognition. Nostradamus is one of the most famous people known for his predictions, as he has reportedly predicted several events throughout history that occurred long after his death.

Retrocognition

Retrocognition

Retrocognition refers to the ability to see in the distant past. It can be as simple as recognizing a place, or a person, or somehow knowing what happened in a certain situation one had nothing to do with at the time it took place. When someone experiences déjà vu, it could be a simple instance of retrocognition. Someone who has retrocognition abilities could possibly to you in the present about what it was like to be a passenger on the Titanic when it sank in 1912.

Telepathy

Telepathy

Telepathy

Telepathy refers to the ability to read and other persons thoughts. Telepathy allows a person to communicate with one or more people using their mind and no other sensory input. If you’ve ever become so close to someone you can tell what they’re thinking, you may not be a telepath, but you can understand the idea behind this particular type of ESP.

Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance refers to the ability to see objects or events that are happening to someone else. Similar to telepathy, clairvoyance refers to the ability to gain knowledge about a person, event, or thing without sensory input. Though typically thought to be strongest during meditation, many psychics can get information about the past, present, and future in a variety of environments.

Clairaudience refers the ability to hear objects or events that are happening to someone else, without any other additional sensory information. Currently the only support for psychic dreams comes in the form of anecdotal evidence.

And let’s face it, if we dream of a plane crash and then a plane crash occurs in the next few days, that personal experience is pretty compelling because it’s packed with emotions and seems too striking a coincidence from the special first-hand perspective. No wonder some people think they’re psychic.

But this sort of coincidental anecdote doesn’t really help us. If anything, it casts more doubt over the reliability of so-called psychic dreams, and may even hinder genuine attempts to investigate the nature of any unconscious sixth sense while dreaming.

If you came here with a genuine interest in dreams about the future, the best thing you can do is conduct your own experiment to prove it either way.

Firstly, learn the art of lucid dreaming .

And then secondly, ask the lucid dream extremely detailed questions about the future. Be merciless and demand explicit details about what precisely is going to happen and when.

???????

Precognitive dreams are dreams that appear to predict the future through a sixth sense.

Let me give you an example of what many people would deem as precognition, but is actually quite simply explained. Mary has a dream that she is pregnant and three weeks later discovers that she is pregnant in real life. This is not really a psychic dream because Mary had access to plenty of unconscious insight: her body gave her subtle signals, and she knew she had been trying to conceive. We all have intuitive dreams like this. They express our innermost hopes and fears based on unconscious information that we may or may not be repressing. There is nothing paranormal about Mary’s dream.

Indeed, to have a truly precognitive dream with paranormal roots, we’d need to access unpredictable information about the future. And that is one reason why precognition is hard to prove. Here is another reason - and it’s all about numbers.

Famous Precognitive Dreams

How often have you dreamed about your own death? You could say that this is an unlikely event, made even more unlikely if you then go and die soon after. This is exactly what happened to Abraham Lincoln.

In 1865, two weeks before he was shot dead, Abraham Lincoln had a psychic dream about a funeral at the White House.

In the dream, he asked someone who was in the casket and they replied, “the president of the United States”. He told his wife about the dream but neither of them took it to heart - for on the night of his assassination he gave his bodyguard the night off.

Are Precognitive Dreams Real?

Are Precognitive Dreams Real?

The American writer, Mark Twain, and his brother Henry once worked on riverboats on the Mississippi.

One night Mark had a dream about his brother’s corpse lying in a metal coffin in his sister’s living room. It rested on two chairs, with a bouquet and a single crimson flower in the center. He told his sister about his dream. Weeks later, his brother was killed in a massive explosion on a riverboat. Many others died and were buried in wooden coffins. But one onlooker felt such pity for young Henry that she raised the money for an expensive metal coffin. At the funeral, he saw the coffin as it was in his dream. As he stood over Henry’s casket, a woman placed a bouquet with a single red rose in the middle.

At face value, these are both compelling cases of precognitive dreaming. But mathematics could still reduce these events to mere coincidence. The only way to build up a solid base of evidence for psychic dreams would be to consistently record every dream, and have a separate person record all the significant world events of the following day, then compare the data.

Even so, matching this data would be a difficult (almost impossible) and highly subjective task.

Precognition and Lucid Dreams

Like all psychic predictions, I find the idea of precognitive dreams requires blind faith. After all, many of our dreams are too interpretive and scattered to make sense of the future information we’re supposed to be receiving. However, the power of lucid dreaming offers a unique opportunity to ask for specific  information about the future. What will be the NASDAQ’s best performing wstock tomorrow?

What will be the flight number of the next major commercial plane crash?

If there were any substance to precognition, this would be a fantastic way to build evidence for it.

We could limit our dream themes (predictions) to one per night - and ask for clarification in as much detail as needed. For example, a lucid dreamer could predict the sinking of the Titanic by asking for the name of the ship, the number of people on board, the number of victims, and the time and location that the ship would go down. Having access to such information would leave no doubt as to the existence of precognitive dreams.

Four ways to Tap into your SenseSixth

Tapping into your sixth sense is all about balance. When one sense dominates the others, it can be really difficult to remain aware of the other senses.

To get in touch with your sixth sense, you have to still and quiet your mind and tune into the more subtle energies and vibrations that surround you. Forget for a moment about what you can see, touch, taste, hear and smell and instead go deeper.

One way to do this is to close your eyes and ask your body how it feels. Don’t try to put any words to the feelings and don’t try to rationalise it, just focus your attention on feeling. By doing this, it can help you to activate the subtle energies that live inside of you.

Four intowaysTapyour SixthSense

The more you pay attention to your gut feelings or intuition, the stronger your sixth sense will become. Think of it like a muscle, the more you use it and rely on it the stronger it will become.

To start building your confidence, start using your intuition and gut feelings to make simple decisions in your life. Whether it is using your intuition to pick

Four to Tapyour Sense

Many years ago when we lived in nomadic tribes, the sixth sense was necessary for our survival. Today however, we have forgotten the power of relying on our sixth sense to help guide us.

Animals still have a very heightened sixth sense which is why they are often more sensitive to spirits and are able to sense natural disasters before they happen.

Our sixth sense is a primal instinct, and the more we can get in touch with the environment that surrounds us, the more we will begin to see how our sixth sense communicates with us.

Take a moment to sense the energy in the room and notice how it makes you feel. What vibes are you getting from the space or the people in the room?

When you tune into your environment in this way, often you will start to recognize things that perhaps you didn’t notice before.

Another important step is learning how to tune into nature. Nature is not only healing but it also in constant communication with us. Just think about your favourite flower for a moment. Flowers are able to communicate joy, happiness, beauty and even love, simply by the energy it carries.

All of nature is very inspiring in this way, and once you open your awareness to this, you will start to notice how it speaks to you.

Our sixth sense also communicates with us through our dreams. Even if your dreams don’t necessarily make sense to your logical mind, often they are filled with subtle messages and clues about the direction of your life.

To begin tapping into this wisdom and knowledge, start writing down your dreams first thing in the morning. Keep doing this for at least two to three weeks and slowly you will start to see themes or patterns emerging.

It is really only when you collectively look back on your dreams that they will start to make sense to you

Neuroimaging fails to demonstrate ESP is real

But researchers note they can’t prove a negative

January 3, 2008

Psychologists at Harvard University have developed a new method to study extrasensory perception that, they argue, can resolve the century-old debate over its existence. According to the authors, their study not only illustrates a new method for studying such phenomena, but also provides the strongest evidence yet obtained against the existence of extrasensory perception, or ESP.

The research was led by Samuel Moulton, a graduate student in the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University with Stephen Kosslyn, John Lindsley Professor of Psychology at Harvard and was published in the Jan. 2008 issue of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience. The scientists used brain scanning to test whether individuals have knowledge that cannot be explained through normal perceptual processing.

“If any ESP processes exist, then participants’ brains should respond differently to ESP and non-ESP stimuli,” explains Moulton. “Instead, results showed that participants’ brains responded identically to ESP and non-ESP stimuli, despite reacting strongly to differences in how emotional the stimuli were and showing subtle, stimulus-related effects.”

Nearly half of the adults in the United States believe in the existence of ESP, which includes telepathy (direct knowledge of another person’s thoughts), clairvoyance (direct knowledge of remote events), and precognition (direct knowledge of the future). People commonly report unexplained knowledge of a loved one’s death or a telephone caller’s identity, for example, and attribute this knowledge to paranormal mental processing.

The U.S. government lent credence to such claims when it revealed that it had spent millions of dollars recruiting and training psychic spies during the Cold War. Furthermore, research studies have been reported that appear to support the existence of ESP, including an influential series of experiments analyzed by psychologist Daryl Bem of Cornell University. These studies, however, gave little insight into the mechanisms — normal or paranormal — that produced the anomalous results. Perhaps more telling, others failed to replicate these results.

To develop a better test of ESP, the authors decided to develop a new method, which directly addressed the presumed source of ESP: namely, the brain. They argue that because the brain enables perception and stores information — even events people don’t consciously perceive or information they can’t consciously remember — it can offer a much more comprehensive test for ESP than self-report or behavior.

“The brain shows a suppressed response to stimuli that a person has seen before, even when those stimuli were presented subliminally, so the person wasn’t consciously aware of having seen them; furthermore, it shows an enhanced response to stimuli that a person is expecting,” says Moulton. “Because knowledge and expectation bias brain activation, neuroimaging offers us a uniquely powerful test of subtle perceptual or cognitive processes.”

To study whether or not ESP exists, Moulton and Kosslyn presented participants with two types of visual stimuli: ESP stimuli and non-ESP stimuli. These two types of stimuli were identical with one exception: ESP stimuli were not only presented visually, but also were presented telepathically, clairvoyantly, and precognitively to participants.

To present stimuli telepathically, the researchers showed the photographs to the participants’ identical twin, relative, romantic partner, or friend, who was seated in another room. To present stimuli clairvoyantly, the researchers displayed the photographs on a distant computer screen. And to present stimuli precognitively, the researchers showed participants the photographs again in the future.

Does this conclusively prove that ESP does not exist? “No,” says Moulton. “You cannot affirm the null hypothesis. But at the same time, some null results are stronger than others. This is the best evidence to date against the existence of ESP. Perhaps most important, this study offers scientists a new way to study ESP that avoids the pitfalls of past approaches.”
