VOORWOORD PREFACE

Hoe doe je dat in 2018, vernieuwend zijn? Waar vind je vernieuwing in een wereld met zo’n veelzijdigheid en kwantiteit? In het Fluid Festival zoeken we de frisheid op in grensvlakken. In de grijze gebieden ertussen, die vaak heel kleurrijk blijken.

How do you do such a thing in 2018, to be innovative? Where can you find innovation in a world with such diversity and quantity?

In the Fluid Festival we search for the freshness in the boundaries. In the grey areas in between, that often turn out to be full of colour.

OVER ABOUT Met als kern van het festival de presentatie van alle vijf huidige projecten van Jesse Passenier ter afsluiting van zijn Nieuwe Makers Regeling van het Fonds Podiumkunsten, is de stempel van de componist en festivalgrondlegger groot.

Hij wil hiermee een gebaar doen aan de stad Maastricht, die voor hem een belangrijke bakermat voor zijn muzikale studie en ontwikkeling is. Sinds 2007 is hij er actief.

Begonnen als student, inmiddels docent Jazz Compositie en Arrangeren aan het Conservatorium van Maastricht en coach voor de Master.

Naast zijn projecten staan er uitdagende optredens op het podium. Verwant vanwege hun zoektochten naar mengstijlen en gebruik van interdisciplinariteit. Ook de locaties maken de brug zichtbaar. Ten eerste poppodium de Muziekgieterij, waar ook productiepartner Intro In Situ zich huisvest, past bij de funky, jazzy en poppy kanten van de projecten. De Lutherse Kerk geeft daarnaast gelegenheid voor de intensere en diepere concert-beleving, met ruimte voor experiment. Ook het eten is voor ons belangrijk aan de beleving. Iedere dag krijgt een geheel eigen draai, gekoppeld aan de thema’s van de concerten.

With at its core the presentation of all five current projects by Jesse Passenier, serving to conclude his New Makers Funding of the Performing Art Fund NL (FPK), the mark of the composer and founder of the festival is significant. In this act lies the intend to make a grateful gesture to the city of Maastricht, which has been an important cradle of his music studies and development. Ever since 2007, Passenier has been active in and around town.

Starting out as a student, by now he is an educator of Jazz Composing and Arranging at the Conservatory of Maastricht and a coach in the Master.

Beside his projects, challenging performances are presented. Related, because of their explorations of mixed artforms and crossover styles. This also becomes apparent, looking at the venues. On the one hand pop stage ‘de Muziekgieterij’, also home to production partner Intro In Situ, fits the funky, jazzy and poppy sides of the projects. The ‘Lutherse Kerk’, on the other hand, gives the opportunity for the more intense and deep concert experience, with space for experiment. Food is no less important for the experience. Every day will have its own twist, linked to the themes of the concerts.

KINDERWORKSHOP MET BIGBANDMUZIEK! Passenier baseerde composities op kindertekeningen die werden gemaakt tijdens een workshop op Cultura Nova Festival 2017. Dat begon met de vraag: “Hoe werden Flora en Fauna Vrienden?” De muziek van die dag introduceerde het kleine bloemwezentje en de faun en daar namen de kinderen het over. Ze tekende blad na blad vol, met steeds meer en gekker wordende verhaallijnen. Iedere dag voegde Passenier nieuwe muziek toe, voortbordurend op de tekeningen van de afgelopen dag en zo kwam in acht volle en plezierige workshopdagen dit fantasierijke verhaal tot stand!

Deelname is geheel GRATIS!!!

Nu is de workshop terug!

Er zal een PRIJS zijn voor de BESTE TEKENING en het BESTE VERHAAL, waarvan de aankondiging/uitreiking plaatsvindt op zondag 16 dec om 16:00! De locatie daarvoor is gelijk aan de workshoplocatie: de Muziekgieterij. Alle deelnemers zijn van harte uitgenodigd om erbij te zijn! Er zal ook een email worden verstuurd met de winnaars.

Now, the workshop returns!

Passenier based compositions on children’s drawings that were made during a workshop at Cultura Nova Festival 2017. It opened with the question: “How did Flora and Fauna become friends?” The music of that day introduced a little flower creature and the faune, and then the kids took over – they drew drawing after drawing, introducing more and more new story lines. Every day Passenier added new music, basing on the drawings of the passed day, and this was how in eight intense but cheerful workshop days, this fantastical story emerged!

There will be a PRIZE for the BEST DRAWING and the BEST STORY, which will be announced / awarded on Sunday, 16 Dec, at 16:00! The location is the same as the workshop location: the Muziekgieterij. All participants are more than welcome to join!

An e-mail announcing the winners will also be sent.

So if the winner is not present at the awards, the prize will still find its way to the winner!

HOW FLORA AND FAUNA BECAME FRIENDS REINIER BAAS | JESSE PASSENIER | CODARTS BIG BAND Componist Jesse Passenier (1985) – winnaar van de Rogier van Otterloo Award 2017 – waagt zich in een samenwerking met dubbele Edison Award winnaar Reinier Baas (1985). Met Passeniers acht gloednieuwe composities vraagt hij veel van de kunst en vaardigheden van de gitaarheld Baas. De eerste indicator van wat we kunnen verwachten ligt in de titel ‘de ongekroonde koning van de hedendaagse jazz’, welke aan Baas werd toegekend door Jazzizm. De tweede aanwijzing vinden we in de fluïde crossovers van Passenier, bekend om zijn kundige arrangeren voor het Metropole Orkest. Het is daarom ook geen toeval dat de beide heren elkaar bij dit orkest hebben leren kennen, waar de kiem voor dit plan werd gelegd.

En welzeker met de zeer geschikte “partner in crime”: de Codarts Big Band.

Wees er klaar voor kopje onder te gaan in een rijk met ongrijpbare en mythische wezens, weelderige hemelse tuinen en magische mysteries. Angstig vluchten, liefdevolle ontmoetingen, je vindt het allemaal in How Flora and Fauna Became Friends.

HOW FLORA AND FAUNA BECAME FRIENDS REINIER BAAS | JESSE PASSENIER | CODARTS BIG BAND Composer Jesse Passenier (1985) – recent winner of the Rogier van Otterloo Award – ventures into a collaboration with double Edison Award winner Reinier Baas (1985). Featuring eight brand new compositions by Passenier, this project dives deep into the arts and skills of the challenging guest and guitar hero. The first indicator of what may be expected lies in the title ‘the uncrowned king of contemporary jazz’, which was attributed to Baas by Jazzizm. The second clue we find in the fluid crossovers of Passenier, known for his skillful arranging for the Metropole Orchestra. It is therefore no coincidence that these two gentlemen met each other at this orchestra, where which sowed the seeds of this plan. And indeed with a very suitable partner in crime: the Codarts Big Band.

Get ready to be submerged in a realm with ungraspable and mythical creatures, abundant heavenly gardens and magical mysteries. Anxious fleeing, affectionate encounters, you will find it all in How Flora and Fauna Became Friends.

ÁRSTÍÐIR De IJslandse band Árstíðir stond in 2008 binnen zes maanden na hun debuut release bovenaan de IJslandse hitlijsten, en ondanks dat zij tijdens hun eerste internationale tour in 2010 tegen werden gewerkt door een vulkaanuitbarsting, heeft de band inmiddels veel harten weten te veroveren op het Europese vasteland. Árstíðir’s muziek overschrijdend genres maar kan het beste worden omschreven als door klassiek beïnvloedde indie folk rock.

Of ze nu op een treinstation in Duitsland, een concerthal in Rusland of thuis in Reykjavík optreden, hun muziek betovert altijd. De bandleden hebben allemaal een brede muzikale achtergrond en ervaring, gecombineerd met professionele interesses variërend van wetgeving tot literatuur en van bouwkunde tot computers. Árstíðir laat organische akoestische tradities en moderne elektronische arrangementen samenkomen met ingewikkelde simpelheid en onnavolgbare deskundigheid.

In 2016 deed de groep een speciale theatertour in Nederland samen met Anneke van Giersbergen en eind 2017 was er een uitgebreide Europese tour met Sólstafir en Myrkur. Árstíðir is sinds dit weer jaar terug in de originele triobezetting waarin ze tien jaar geleden begonnen. In maart 2018 verscheen hun nieuwe single ‘While This Way’, afkomstig van hun vierde album ‘Nivalis’, dat eind juni verscheen. Nivalis betekent in Latijn ‘als sneeuw’ en daarom keert de band in december terug naar Nederland voor een reeks intieme kerstshows. Dat belooft magisch te worden.

ÁRSTÍÐIR Not many bands can lay claim to the kind of dramatic career development that the Icelandic band Árstíðir can. Formed in the wake of the 2008 stock market crash, they found themselves catapulted to the top of the Icelandic music charts within six months of their debut, and then forged ahead with their 2010 tour despite a volcanic eruption that stalled global travel.

In 2012, Árstíðir was the first Icelandic band to ever win the Eiserner Eversteiner European Folk Music Award (in Plauen, Germany) and were scheduled to play the prestigious TFF Rudolstadt festival in July 2013. While on tour in Germany that year,an impromptu performance of “Heyr himna smiður” in the Bürger Bahnhof train station in Wuppertal swept them up in a tidal wave of international attention. Hastily recorded by a friend who posted it to YouTube, the video received more than four million views and sparked global interest in both the band and Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson’s composition.

By May 2014, they had launched a Kickstarter campaign that quickly raised $70,000 (substantially exceeding the initial $20,000 goal) to finance their third album, Hvel (Spheres). In return for their investment, backers were promised not only a copy of the finished recording, but also gifts ranging from hand knit Icelandic sweaters to vials of volcanic ash from theEyjafjallajökull eruption.

In 2016 the group toured the Netherlands with a special theatre show together with Anneke van Giersbergen and they followed up with a European tour together with Sólstafir and Myrkur. Árstíðir is going back to their original trio setting this year. In March of 2018 their newest single “While This Way”, from their fourth studio album “Nivalis” was released. Nivalis meaning “like snow” in Latin and serving as the inspiration to play some intimate christmas shows in the Netherlands in December. It’s shaping up to be magical!

MARÍA DOMÍNGUEZ FROM INSIDE Avant-garde pianiste María Domínguez brengt een recital vol met zwervende, grijpende composities van hedendaagse componisten, waarbij het traditionele pianogeluid aangevuld wordt met digitale effecten. Het programma bevat werken voor piano en electronics, geschreven na 2000 door Steve Reich, Gérard Pesson, Benjamin Van Esser, Christopher Cerrone, Pierre Jodlowski e.a.

Tijdens het concert worden de werken van deze componisten uit onze eigen tijd geïnterpreteerd door María Domínguez Pérez en geeft zij een inkijk in de hedendaagse rol van een pianist en de heruitvinding van wat een muzikaal kunstwerk zou kunnen zijn.

Een veelzijdige en fantasierijke pianist met een actieve solo carrière is altijd op ontdekkingsreis. Maria werkte reeds samen met verschillende ensembles, orkesten en artiesten uit verschillende werkvelden zoals theater, dans en beeldende kunst. Als artiest toont zij een grote persoonlijkheid en creativiteit en is zij altijd op zoek naar een verbinding tussen progressiviteit en traditie als een denkbeeldige reis tussen twee verre oorden. Haar levendige geest en niet te onderdrukken energie drijft haar continu tot het starten van nieuwe projecten en artistieke avonturen waarin zij het snijvlak tussen het oude en het nieuwe kan onderzoeken. Ze is altijd op zoek naar gemene delers en onderzoekt hoe dialogen tussen het publiek en disciplines tot stand kunnen komen.

Haar muzikale leven is grotendeels getekend door de vele gastuitvoeringen die zij in Europa en Wereldwijd gespeeld heeft. Maria ging onder meer op tour met het BKM Symfonie Orkest en het Nederlands Jeugd Orkest (NJO) met wie ze uitvoeringen had in het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Konzerhaus Berling (Duitsland), Theatre Alto Adige, Festival Toblach (Italië), Theater Orpheus Apeldoorn. www.fluidfestival.nl

MARÍA DOMÍNGUEZ FROM INSIDE Avant-garde pianist María Domínguez performs a recital full of roving, compelling compositions by modern-day composers, blending the traditional piano with whims of digital effects. This program will showcase works for piano and electronics written post-2000. The programme includes composers as Steve Reich, Gérard Pesson, Benjamin Van Esser, Christopher Cerrone, and Pierre Jodlowski.

The event promises to represent the works of these great writers of our time as interpreted by María Domínguez Pérez; a peek into the contemporary role of the pianist and the reinvention of what constitutes a musical work of art.

Having an active career as a soloist, the versatile and imaginative pianist likes to explore. She already collaborated with various ensembles, orchestras, and artists from fields such as theatre, dance and visual arts. As an artist she displays great personality and creativity, always in pursuit to unite progressiveness and tradition like an imaginative journey between two distant shores. Her lively spirit and irrepressible energy continues to drive her toward new projects and artistic adventures that explore the intersection of old and new. She is constantly searching for common roots and investigates how dialogues with the audience and between disciplines are established.

Her musical life is largely marked by many guest performances in Europe and worldwide. Maria went on tour with BKM Symphony Orchestra and with the National Youth Orchestra of Netherlands (NJO), performing at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Konzerthaus, Berlín (Germany), Theatre Alto Adige, Festival Toblach (Italy), Theater Orpheus Apeldoorn (The Netherlands), to name a few.

HAPPY MEDIUM REALITY AND THE BRIDGE Happy Medium is Passenier’s interdisciplinaire improvisatieonderzoeksproject geweest, gesteund door de Nieuwe Makersregeling van het Fonds Podiumkunsten. In dit onderzoek beoogt Passenier disciplines dicht bij elkaar te brengen in improvisatie, terwijl gedwongen te zijn met verschillende talen met elkaar te moeten communiceren.

“Kunnen een danser, een lichtkunstenaar en musici net zo hecht samen zijn als een bassist en een drummer dat kunnen?”

Dit betekent, elkaars talen bestuderen, leren over de obstakels en wegen eromheen vinden! Dit onderzoek heeft nu geleid tot de ontwikkeling van Reality and the Bridge.

Met als doel het Fluid Orchestra project van volgend jaar te worden, bevraagt and the Bridge onze realiteit – wat is ‘werkelijk’ (REAL), wat is ‘het’ (IT) en Reality ‘waarom?’ (Y, in het engels “why?”) – en duikt het de diepte in van ons onderbewustzijn, waar concepten als ‘nonlokaliteit’ en ‘nontemporaliteit’ de norm worden.

Voor velen een brug te ver, maar voor Passenier een brug om over te schrijven, waarbij deze implicaties hem tot diepe vragen brengen over onze realiteit, haar grenzen en erna.

Met fluitist Raymond Honing, danser Kenzo Kusuda, lichtkunstenaar Wijnand van der Horst en Jesse Passenier op de piano en vibrafoon verkent de groep deze onderwerpen met een nadruk op improvisatie.

HAPPY MEDIUM REALITY AND THE BRIDGE Happy Medium has been Passenier’s interdisciplinairy improvisation research project, funded by the New Makers Allowance from the Performing Art Fund NL. In this research Passenier set out to bring disciplines close together in improvisation, whilst having to communicate through different languages.

“Can a dancer, a light artist and musicians be as tight and communicative as a bass player and a drummer can be?”

This means, studying each others language, learning about the obstacles, and finding ways around them! This research has now led into the development of Reality and the Bridge.

Aiming to be next year’s Fluid Orchestra project, Reality and the Bridge

deals with questioning reality – what’s ‘real’, what is ‘it’, and ‘why?’ – and dives into the depth of the subconciousness, where concepts like ‘nonlocality’ and ‘nontemporality’ become the norm.

For many a bridge too far, but for Passenier a bridge to compose about, because these implications drive him to deeply question our reality, its borders, and beyond.

Starring flutist Raymond Honing, dancer Kenzo Kusuda, light artist Wijnand van der Horst, and Jesse Passenier on the piano, the group sets out to explore these topics with an emphasis on improvisation.

RAYMOND HONING KENZO KUSUDA In ZWEER maken fluitist Raymond Honing en de Japanse danser/choreograaf Kenzo Kusuda een nieuw ritueel, een bezwering. Zoekend naar een nieuw, niet religieus, houvast dat gezocht wordt. Over het bezweren van oude koeien uit de sloot, oude wijn in nieuwe zakken en glazen die half leeg lijken te zijn.

Over hoe we grote emoties klein kunnen maken zodat het behapbaar wordt en we een vorm kunnen vinden om er in het dagelijks leven mee om te gaan. Een eclectisch geheel van beweging, tekst en muziek van o.a Bach, Bruynel en Debussy.

De in Nederland wonende Japanse choreograaf/danser Kenzo Kuzuda ontsluiert de poëzie van het dansende lichaam. Kusuda neemt het publiek mee naar een wereld vol fantasie. Zijn werk zit boordevol mystieke schoonheid dat verder gaat dan onze zintuigen kunnen waarnemen.

Kusuda studeerde economie en business management en werkte parttime op de grootste vismarkt van Tokyo toen hij de dans als zijn persoonlijke taal ontdekte. Als choreograaf heeft Kusuda een uniek en heel persoonlijk repertoire opgebouwd, vaak in samenwerking met Korzo in Den Haag, die hem beschouwt als een van de meest poëtische choreografen in Nederland.

Raymond Honing behoort tot een nieuwe generatie musici die zijn energie voor een groot deel wijdt aan zowel oude als nieuwe muziek. Na drie studies aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam – fluit, traverso en kamermuziek – begon hij een carrière die drie eeuwen muziek omvat. Van Barok op de een-kleppen traverso en vroeg-romantische muziek op de achtkleppentraverso tot eigentijdse muziek op de moderne Boehmfluit, inclusief alt en bas. Zijn belangrijkste drijfveer voor nieuw repertoire is altijd nieuwsgierigheid. Nieuwsgierigheid naar wat er omging in het hoofd van de componist, ongeacht of deze in leven is of al tweehonderd jaar dood is. En nieuwsgierigheid naar de uitwerking van de muziek op het publiek.

FLUID ORCHESTRA ft. DUDOK KWARTET & VJ ANNE GENTENAAR LIT SCENES LIT SCENES , gecomponeerd door Jesse Passenier en uitgevoerd door zijn Fluid Orchestra, mengt jazz en klassiek voor een uitzonderlijke octet bezetting. De jonge componist, die onder meer winnaar was van de Rogier van Otterloo Award 2017 en al meer dan 70 arrangementen schreef voor het Metropole Orkest, haalde muzikale invloeden uit de hoeken van Bartók, Ligeti en Ravel, en tegelijk van jazzgrootheden als Bob Brookmeyer, Vince Mendoza en de Deense Jens Winther. Het gerenommeerde Dudok Kwartet Amsterdam neemt zitting als strijkkwartet, wat wordt uitgebreid met pianist Bart Van Caenegem, bassist Matthias Akeo Nowak, fluitist Maarten Reumkens en Marc Alberto op EWI en Moog Synth. Onderdeel van het programma is een compositie voor alleen het strijkkwartet. Het Fluid Orchestra staat onder leiding van de componist zelf, die samenwerkte met VJ Anne Gentenaar om de filmische muziek te vertalen naar beeld. De muziek vertolkt scènes uit de natuur, die staan voor diepere emoties en ervaringen. Deze rode draad wordt door de live visuals van Gentenaar zichtbaar gemaakt.

FLUID ORCHESTRA ft. DUDOK KWARTET & VJ ANNE GENTENAAR LIT SCENES LIT SCENES , composed by Jesse Passenier and performed by his Fluid Orchestra, mixes jazz and classical for an exceptional octet line-up. The young composer, who won the Rogier van Otterloo Award in 2017 and has already written over 70 arrangements for the Metropole Orchestra, was influenced by Bartók, Ligeti and Ravel, as well as jazz legends such as Bob Brookmeyer, Vince Mendoza and the Danish Jens Winther. The renowned Dudok Quartet Amsterdam features as string quartet, alongside pianist Bart Van Caenegem, bassist Matthias Akeo Nowak, flutist Maarten Reumkens and Marc Alberto on EWI and Moog Synth.

Part of the programme is a composition for the string quartet alone. The Fluid Orchestra is led by the composer himself, who collaborated with VJ Anne Gentenaar to translate the filmic music to image. The music deals with scenes from nature, that represent deep emotions and experiences. On screen, this ongoing theme is brought to life by Gentenaars live visuals.

FRINGE ORCHESTRA ft. CARLO NARDOZZA, REINER WITZEL & DJ VINDICTIV LUDWIG AND BEYOND FRINGE ORCHESTRA , is de jaarlijkse samenwerking tussen het Fluid Orchestra en het Conservatorium Maastricht. Deze editie componeert Fluid Orchestra leider Jesse Passenier een uitdagende crossover, met bijzondere rollen voor DJ Vindictiv, trompettist Carlo Nardozza en saxofonist Reiner Witzel.

Gevormd uit studenten en alumni van het Conservatorium Maastricht, vat de bezetting drie conventionele formaties samen: het symfonieorkest, de bigband en de electric band. Dit stemt overeen met de mix van stijlen die Passenier hier neerzet, de grenzen verkennend van klassiek, jazz, funk, drum ‘n bass en hip hop. Openend met een referentie naar Beethoven’s ‘Ode an die Freude’, is Ludwig and Beyond geboren.

Een behoorlijk bereik van stijlen wordt gemixt, maar met Rogier van Otterloo Award winnaar Jesse Passenier, door de jury gevierd om zijn volwassen en geweldig creatieve componeren en arrangeren (RvO Award 2017), is deze uitdaging in vertrouwde handen. Passenier is bekend om zijn vele arrangementen voor het Metropole Orkest, daarnaast schreef hij onder meer voor The Heritage Orchestra, het Clazz Ensemble, het Nederlands Symfonieorkest en de Koninklijke Marinierskapel en werkte hij samen met artiesten als Kurt Elling, Vince Mendoza, Jacob Collier, Jörg Achim Keller, Reinier Baas, Ruben Hein, Ellen ten Damme en vele anderen.

FRINGE ORCHESTRA ft. CARLO NARDOZZA, REINER WITZEL & DJ VINDICTIV LUDWIG AND BEYOND FRINGE ORCHESTRA , is the annual collaboration between the Fluid Orchestra and the Conservatory of Maastricht. This edition, Fluid Orchestra leader Jesse Passenier composes a daring crossover, featuring DJ Vindictiv, trumpeter Carlo Nardozza and saxophonist Reiner Witzel.

Made up of students and alumni of the Conservatory of Maastricht, the line-up merges and summarizes three conventional formations: the symphony orchestra, the big band and the electric band. This is in alignment with the mix of styles that Passenier sets out to bring to the stage, exploring the boundaries of classical, jazz, funk, drum ‘n bass and hip hop. Starting with a reference to Beethoven’s ‘Ode an die Freude’, Ludwig and Beyond is born.

Quite a range of styles to be mixed, but with Rogier van Otterloo Award winner Jesse Passenier, celebrated by the jury for his mature and greatly creative composing and arranging (RvO Award 2017), this challenge is in trusted hands.
