01. Fractal Luminescence Studio: Personal Project Supervisors: Victoria McReynolds Academic: BSc 04 TTU Project Scheme: Solar Observatory Location: Lubbock, Texas

Description: Dealing with light is a fundamental principle of design in architecture. Observing the different stages of the sun and its relationship with the building gives the observer a better understanding of how its behavior affects our built environment. By designing a solar observatory to observe the sun in the plains of Texas and the steep mountains of Norway, we start to see the change in the sun’s effect due to the latitudinal positioning of the location.

Wood and Clay

Slope to Form

Thinking with the hands was a strong part of the design process for this project. The wood gave sturdiness and dostinctiveness while caly gave flexibility. By studying how these different forms performed under differnet lighting conditions gave insight to their re;ationship with one another.

With a drastic slope to the site in Norway, modeling the extreme nature of the place was a starting point to better grasp the conditions of the area.

From the site, the idea of fractals came as the nature of fractals were continously regenerative.

Therefore, this form could extend acroos the site.

Light Box After the idea of a fractal, further testing was done to explore how this fractal form would behave within the constraints of a box. With each face of the box having an identical pattern, a black string was strung through and carefully woven inside the box. The black line is an abstract representation of the path of travel for light within the box. The different lines within space consequently form intersections. From these nodes of interest, this project starts to not only implement contextual information within the design but also to bring to light a strong point of consideration for the formal organization and experience of the space within these forms. The light box is an amalgamation of different ideas into one.

Form Study Continuing with the handson experimental approach, different orientations of the same size mass were conceived. This exercise seeks out an assemblage from a group of the same fractal forms where. It balances interest and functionality. As a solar observatory, the forms and the available surface space from the factual form’s walls were a source of significant consideration. On the

Facade Tesselation The triangular fractal motif continued onto the facade. Openings were created to allow intentional lighting moments inside the solar observatory. Programmatic needs largely dictate these openings.

02. Harmony Studio: Design Studio V Supervisors: Er in Hunt Academic: BSc 05 TTU Project Scheme: Cultural Center Location: Lubbock, Texas

Description: The city of Boston is an area rich with culture and history. The town has undergone a complex urban development. The context is a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. The revitalization project focused on a site in southern Dorchester, known for its numerous vibrant neighborhoods.

Objectives: The site due for revitalization intervention is currently a parking lot. The prominent noise emanating from the train tracks to the west significantly influenced the design process.

Additionally, the surrounding area needed more green spaces. Reintroducing trees to the site could also be a noise buffer for sound pollution. As a cultural center, the people of Boston could also get a glimpse back at the area in pre-colonial times, where there used to be a forest in today’s urban context. The combination of utilizing trees as both noise buffers and as a biophilic approach to revitalization creates a compelling area where people can gather and also learn about the history of Boston of the past.

Noise Analysis A CNC machine etched grooves and valleys into two stacked MDF boards to demonstrate the varying intensities of noise throughout the site. A laser-cut plexiglass grid is suspended over the wood model to help organize the site better. The drilled holes mark existing trees.



Massing Study Continuing the concept of tactile thinking, physically touching and interacting with the massing elements became crucial. This interaction endowed the building with a more sculptural ambiance. They organized all the programmatic requirements with their own dimensional size, which called for critical thinking in their relationship. The massing process started with rectangular laser-cut MDF boards to 3D printed massing identity models.

Biomorphic Exploration In pursuit of a more organic and natural feel for the building, we conducted a separate exploration to draw inspiration from artists of the past. Looking mainly at the Suprematism period of modern art, the basic breakdown of space with simple forms and elements creates a sense of natural order. Inspired by the works of Kazimir Malevich, a process of essential forms and extrusions resulted in a natural form. This exercise would be the basis for approaching the programmatic layout and solving the “in-between” space.

Grasshopper Tree Logic for Parametric Facade

Parametric Facade Employing a parametric facade allows the building to better immerse itself with the trees introduced in the space between the building and the street. The goal was to have the building be one with the trees, to blend into the nature that the cultural building is trying to bring attention to. The facade’s design aims to create a rippling effect, resembling leaves rustling in the wind as people walk along the street and observe the building from a distance.

This same facade also simulates a tree bark. Akin to how the rings of a tree tell stories that span many years, the building acts like a beacon for people to gather to learn more about what Boston was like pre-colonial times when the trees were plentiful and everywhere.

Description: Gukje Market in Busan requires a radical intervention for modernization and preservation of its historical and cultural significance. The market faces issues like poor maintenance and a stagnant identity emerging from the Korean War. Our innovative strategy aims to revitalize the market, addressing traffic, program placement, and access concerns. We intend to create open spaces, fostering flexibility and a sense of connection with the local context. The arts and crafts building, situated strategically, tackles identified issues while providing a unique and enjoyable visitor experience, focusing on light, space, and harmony.

Moments in Space Due to to the connection interventions, these circulation paths cut through the mass, resulting in moments in space.

These special moments are when the circuation and mass form intriguing experiences for the person. Ranging from double heighted space that sslopes, to overhangs and stairs, all of these spaces have a relationship with the path that people walk on.This diagram is devised to highlight some of these moments in space where the space, represented in a mass, mark these special moments.

04. Cartographic Canopy Studio: Personal Project Supervisors: Angel Martinez Garcia-Poscada Academic: Contemporary Issues Project Scheme: Temporary Installation Collaborators: Individual Project

Description: Robert Smithson once said, “establish enigmas, not explanations.” Perhaps his decree draws parallels with the type of work he produces. This conundrum that plagues the mind is a source of self-discovery through intense internalization with the sort of art, temporary in nature, embodied in whole, and captures the idea in its design. Like Freudian theories that propose memories, thoughts, and urges influence human behavior, confirmation bias finds liberty in a chasm of ambiguity. What is the truth behind such uncertainty? Could it even be guided by cognitive parameters of correspondence, coherence, pragmatics, redundancy, and semantic theories?

Nevertheless, modernity today calls for the interpretation of the reality around us. In this process, we may perceive the essence and meaning of things. Maybe as arbitrators and beholders of our reasoning, it echoes Nietzsche’s fundamentals. In turn, we differentiate the merit of art through the subjectivity of the surrounding circumstances. Could there be irony in depicting more with less? Ludwig Mies van der Rohe once said, “Less is more.” Like how composers purposely introduce silence in their compositions, it is essential to remember that music starts from silence.Similarly, the spatial qualities of a defined area start from emptiness. Akin to Malevich’s approach, one can uncover the purity of the intention through the abstraction and omission of excess information. With Descartes’s “I think, therefore I am,” I encourage the reflection of your reality in the space you experience.

05b. Professional Journey Studio: Parkway Construction & Architecture Supervisors: Chris Ruttledge Stage: Skematic Design & CD Set Project Scheme: Senior living, Industrial, Resort, Design Build Location: Lewisville, Texas

Description: During a three-month summer internship with a design-build-focused firm, I had the chance to contribute to projects involving senior living, resorts, and warehouses. My role ranged from putting together construction document sets to schematic design. Undertaking this experience allowed me to grow as an architect and in my soft skills in the workplace.

Coming out of this internship, I gained more insight into the architectural profession and walked away with more technical skills.
