Welcome Back Edition

Welcome from Multicultural Student Affairs: We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all incoming students! We are happy that you have joined our University of Miami family. To our returning students, welcome back!

There have been several changes over this summer including a new edition to the MSA staff. Jesse Ford joined us in June as the Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Affairs. Jesse graduated with a Masters in Education from the University of South Carolina. As an advocate for inclusion and equality, Jesse believes that “the true test of our effectiveness is the difference we make in the lives of the individual student.” You will definitely see him around campus so make sure to say hello.

We have a number of great programs planned for you this year including various cultural celebrations, our Student Success Series, leadership and diversity trainings, graduate school preparation testing, and a host of others events. Be sure to come to our programs… it is a great way to learn some new things, get involved, and get acquainted with your peers. In addition to planning programs, we have worked diligently to update materials that will assist you in achieving your academic goals while challenging you to grow both personally and professionally. Our office provides several resources to help you navigate the University and the Miami community. The Urban Access Guide has been updated with new restaurants, hair salons, shopping malls, etc. This year the Urban Access Guide will only be released online and can be found on our website at www.miami.edu/msa.

The MSA website is user-friendly with a section for student organizations, featured special events, a photo gallery, and a complete list of MSA programs that occur throughout the year.

Lastly, be sure to read the UNITY Newsletter, which will be emailed to you twice a month. It contains valuable information on campus resources, programs, and services that will help you during your collegiate career. We encourage you to stop by the MSA office (Building 21-P) and visit us! We are here to assist you in any way that we can. Good luck as the semester begins!

WHAT IS GOING ON

Proceed to Party—at the Herbert Wellness Center House Party!

We may not have red solo cups, but the wellness staff knows how to throw a party! UM students are invited to stop by the Herbert Wellness Center (HWC) House Party on Monday, August 20, from 7:30PM to 10:00PM for a night of games, giveaways, and FREE food! The first 1,000 freshmen will receive a free T-shirt (all you have to do is like the HWC on Facebook). For more information, call 305-284-8500 or visit www.miami.edu/wellness.

Studio Cycling, Yoga or Both!

Studio cycling and yoga passes are on sale at the Herbert Wellness Center. The new cycling studio with a video wall has taken the indoor cycling experience to a whole new level. The yoga schedule includes a variety of Yoga styles—Sivananda, Vinyasa Flow, Power, and Hatha. A semester pass cost $60 for student members and $96 for non-student members. This pass gives you unlimited access to scheduled yoga classes or study cycling classes. Can’t decide? Buy a combo pass. Student members can purchase a combo pass for $90 and non-student members an purchase them for $144. The combo pass gives you unlimited access to all cycling and yoga classes. To purchase your pass, go to the sales office located on the second floor of the Herbert Wellness Center. For more information, call 305-284-LIFE (5433).

Fantasy Football

How does your fantasy football team stack up against the rest? Find out by participating in the Fantasy Football league! The deadline to register is August 27 and it is absolutely FREE. Career Expo attracts hundreds of companies from various industries including business, healthcare, communication, government, science, technology, and more! Career Expo is specially designed to expose University of Miami students to a broad spectrum of career paths and opportunities, as well as provide them with opportunities to network with employers to secure internships, full-time jobs and a variety of graduate school programs. Aside from networking your way to an internship or full-time job, University of Miami students should also participate in this event as a way to get to know their field and new trends of industry.

Don’t stand on the sidelines - get in on the football action! Registration is now taking place for the flag football intramural leagues. The deadline to sign up is August 28. Captains or a team representative must attend the captains meeting on August 30 at 5:30PM. A $40 refundable deposit is due at the time of registration. Don’t have a team? No problem! Just sign up as a free agent on the roster (free agent meeting is on August 28 at 5:00PM). To sign up, go to room 210 of the Herbert Wellness Center. Paul and Daisy Sorors Fellowship for New Americans Application Deadline: November 9, 2012

German Chancellor Fellowship - Call for Application Application Deadline: October 15, 2012

Up to ten German Chancellor Fellowships are awarded annually to young professionals in the private, public, not-for-profit, cultural, and academic sectors. The scholarship is available to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. Candidates from all professions and disciplines, but especially individuals in the humanities, law, social sciences, and economics are eligible to apply.

The fellowship provides for a stay of one year in Germany for professional development, study, or research. Applicants design individual projects specific to Germany and decide at which institutions to pursue them. Scholars will have an academic advisor and a mentor for the duration of their stay.

Successful candidates have gained full-time work experience and have already shown outstanding leadership potential in a career. Applicants have come from such fields as law, journalism, communications, management, finance, economics, architecture, public service, humanities, arts and environmental affairs.

Applications from the natural sciences may be considered if the topic has a social or humanistic dimension.

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship for Graduate Study at the University of Cambridge Application Deadline for U.S. Citizens: October 16, 2012 Created by a donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Cambridge Scholarships enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a person’s intellectual ability, leadership capacity, and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others.

Citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom are eligible to apply. The national deadline for U.S. candidates is October 16, 2012. To be considered, applicants must apply simultaneously for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship and admission to the University of Cambridge. Applicants who wish to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship for study in Fall 2013 should apply directly to a college of their choice for admission. Deadline dates vary for admission to the University of Cambridge, though most deadlines fall between October and November.

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans provides opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished new Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. Thirty fellowships are awarded each year. Each fellow receives a maintenance grant of up to $25,000 and a tuition grant of one-half of the tuition cost at a U.S. graduate program (up to a maximum of $20,000 per academic year). A fellow may pursue a graduate degree in any professional field (engineering, medicine, law, social work, etc.) or scholarly discipline in the arts (including the fine and performing arts), humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Selection criteria emphasize creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment.

To be eligible, you must be: • A New American (a green card holder or naturalized citizen if born abroad; a child of

naturalized citizens if born in this country) • Not yet 31 years old, as of the application deadline • A college senior or holder of a bachelor’s degree • Not beyond your second year – if already enrolled -- in the graduate degree program for

which you request support All application instructions and materials are available at the Paul and Daisy Soros Foundation website.

Potential UM applicants are encouraged to notify the Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships (prestigiousawards@miami.edu) or 305-284-5387 no less than one month before the national deadline so that an advisor can provide application guidance and feedback.

Fulbright English Teaching Opportunities 2013 – 2014 U.S. Student Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs) are offered in over 60 countries worldwide and in all world regions. For additional information and a list of countries where ETAs are available, as well as specific details on individual country requirements, placements, responsibilities, and opportunities for research or coursework, see the Types of Grants section at www.us.fulbrightonline.org.

In most cases, grantees are placed in schools or universities outside the capital cities. They are assigned various activities designed to improve their students’ language abilities and knowledge of the U.S., while increasing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country.

Applications are welcome from well rounded, articulate native-speakers of English interested in an international education experience who have the initiative needed to assist in English language teaching.

Previous teaching experience is not necessarily required.

MSA’s Book Loan Program

As a student, sometimes resources are scarce and you need a little assistance to get your semester off to a great start. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs provides short term book loans to African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American undergraduate students to assist with purchasing books at the beginning of each semester. The book loan program is funded by private donors who are interested in supporting the academic goals of students of color at the University of Miami. Seniors cannot apply for a book loan.
