Finals Fiesta: Winter Wonderland November 30th at 6:00PM

Tired from a long semester of classes? If so, Multicultural Student Affairs, Canes Night Live, and Hurricane Productions are collabrorating to bring you a evening full of events! Join us on November 30th for Winter Wonderland at 6:00PM. MSA will host 2 hours of games, entertainment, prizes, food, and fun. At 8:00PM, Canes Night Live and Hurricane Productions will have an ice skating rink, a movie, and a snow ball fight! Make sure you come out and celebrate the end of the semester with us! BLACK to Business November 13th at 7:00PM

Being a black professional at a predominantly white institution (PWI) can be a difficult experience. There are various factors that culminate to comprise a strong and successful black professional and United Black Students seeks to better understand these components. On Tuesday, November 13th, UBS will be hosting BLACK to Business. The event will be held from 7:00PM in the McLamore Executive Education Center (School of Business).

This event will feature members of University faculty and alumni to discuss areas of expertise that will ultimately lead back to the event’s theme of being a successful black professional. Students will be separated into groups and will discuss various topics to include: the role religion and spirituality have on one in the professional realm, being a black woman in the professional world, being a black male in the professional world, being black in a PWI, making the best of personal circumstances in order to propel oneself forward, and moving forward while looking back. Dough, Dough, Dough Cooking Class November 28th at 6:30PM We’re not talking money here; we’re talking Pillsbury Dough Boy. This class, led by Chef Mercedes, features rustic savory galette, seasonal fruit tart, and homemade pizza. The cost of the class, which includes cooking instruction, food tasting, and recipes, is $20 for UM students and Wellness Center members; $25 for non-members. This holiday season give a gift from the heart that is good for the tummy.

Join Chef Mercedes as she teaches the following spiced dishes; Moroccan spiced Goat cheese, Tuscan spice rub, Middle East spice blend, and chai spiced cookies. The cost of the class, which includes cooking instruction, food tasting, and recipes, is $20 for UM students and Wellness Center members; $25 for non-members. Heart Saver CPR with AED November 13th at 5:00PM Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Tuesday, November 13th, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. The cost is $35 for student members, $40 for non-student members and $45 for non-members.

Meditation Class November 19th at 7:30PM Namaste students! Are classes, social life, and work stressing you out?

You will develop mental clarity and discipline that will help you focus and improve concentration (great skills when it comes to studying). Lunthita Duthely, a follower of the teachings of Sri Chinmoy, will guide and instruct participants through the meditation.

Presidential Management Fellowship Deadline: November 19th

Boren Scholarship & African Languages Initiative Deadline January 14th

The Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) will be accepting applications from masters level students who will complete their requirements for graduation by August 31st and from individuals who received an advance degree from a qualifying college or university no more than 2 years prior to the opening date of the announcement on November 5th.

Interested candidates should search PMF on www.usajobs.gov.

More information on the PMF program and the requirements are at www.pmf.gov/becomeapmf. PMF applications will be accepted through November 19th.

The African Languages Initiative (AFLI) and the Boren Awards program offers students scholarship opportunities to study African languages and cultures by participating in domestic and overseas language programs in one of the following languages: Swahili, Yoruba, Zulu, Akan/Twi, Hausa, Wolof and Portuguese. Participants can will study the target language intensively at UF during summer 2013 and then travel to an African nation where the language is spoken to continue their language studies in the Fall 2013 semester.

Overseas destinations include Tanzania, Nigeria, South Africa and Mozambique.

Humanity in Action Fellowship Deadline: January 10th The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of students to study human rights and to produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. The fellowship features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, nonprofit organizations, museums and memorials. Participation requires a great deal of intellectual curiosity and stamina, as well as the ability to work effectively in international teams. The programs will begin in Washington, DC at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Fellows will then participate in month-long programs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lyon or Warsaw.

The Hollings Scholarship Program Deadline: January 31th This scholarship provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with practical educational training experience in NOAA related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences, and a housing subsidy for the summer internship. Echoing Green Fellowship Unleashing Your Talent to Solve the World’s Problems Deadline: January 2013 Echoing Green’s central program is our premier two-year Fellowship, which provides more than $2 million in seed funding to a diverse, emerging social entrepreneurs. Typically fewer than one percent of applicants are selected to receive up to $90,000 in seed support to launch new organizations. Sierra Club’s Beyond Oil Internship No Deadline The Sierra Club’s Beyond Oil campaign, based in Washington, DC, aims to cut America’s addiction to oil by stopping destructive and dirty fossil fuels and promoting real solutions such as smart transportation systems, clean cars, and clean, renewable energy that won’t run out. The Beyond Oil intern will assist the campaign’s team members to move our nation beyond oil-based fuels and provide support to all aspects of the Beyond Oil Campaign. Past job activities have included conducting research and writing, assisting in outreach efforts, organizing program activities and events, preparing educational materials, providing administrative support, and contributing to program blogs and social media. All Sierra Club internships are unpaid, but participants are eligible to gain college credit for their internship. MSA Connection: With Nate Johnson!

Nate Johnson is the Assistant Director of Residence Life and is originally from Virginia Beach, VA. When asked to explain his job responbilites Nate said, “I oversee staff in the upperclassmen residence halls (Mahoney, Pearson, Eaton, and University Village). I enjoy working with all of the staff; they are some of the most dedicated people that I know. And as always... the beloved tag line of “Other Duties as Assigned.”

God, family, and friends are his foundation so any time not spent at work, is spent honoring and enjoying those aspects of his life. Nate earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from the University of Colorado and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. When Nate was asked about his research interests he stated, “I have a genuine interest in the human experience. Understanding the story of an individual has a significant influence on how I interpret my worldview. At some point, I will be exploring doctorate programs and I plan to research how underrepresented groups have been included when shaping our research base in student affairs... Long story short, I want to know how the research that we base a bulk of our decision making on has been inclusive of everyone.” Nates advice to students is to, “Never let someone tell you who you are. It is your responsibility to find your light. It is your responsibility to find you greatness. It is your responsibility to be a great light for this world.” His favorite quote is “The world is made better or worse by the person that you choose to become.” Nate’s office is located in Eaton Residence College. In 1915, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence, Kans., formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, to call upon the country to observe such a day. A proclamation was issued on September 28th, 1915, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens.

The first American Indian Day declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of NY. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois, for example, legislators enacted such a day in 1919.

Presently, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it continues to be a day we observe without any recognition as a national legal holiday.
