Time Managements Tips

Diversity Week 2014

Hi Canes! Do you ever feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It does often seem like there is so much to do and so little time. Here are some time management tips to help keep you from stretching yourself out too thin.

Each year, Multicultural Student Affairs and Unity Roundtable coordinate Diversity Week. Diversity Week celebrates the unique and varied cultures at the university. This year, we have the following events scheduled:

• Tip #1: Be Organized. Stay organized by using time saving tools such as an appointment calendar. Use your appointment calendar for everything, including noting your class schedule, extracurricular activities, and study time. “To do” lists are also a helpful time saving tool, considering the many things that you have to do, using a “to do” list for daily/weekly activities can help you to keep track of everything that you need to accomplish.

Diversity Week Kick-Off The Hispanic Heritage Month Committee and the Unity Roundtable are hosting the Diversity Week Kick-Off on Monday, November 10th at 12:00PM on the SAC Patio. This event will highlight different cultures represented at UM through music, dance, food and art. We invite UM student organizations to participate by tabling and educating others on their culture, performing a cultural dance or providing another form of entrainment from their culture. If your organization would like to participate, contact MSA at 305-284-2855.

• Tip #2: Plan Ahead. Before agreeing to take on a task determine how long this task will take and how many other tasks you have pending.

Planning ahead of time will always allow for you to be more productive with your time. If you schedule it, it will happen!

Spiritual Treasures Showcase

• Tip #3: Prioritize Your Tasks. Use an A-B-C rating system for items on your “to do” list with “A” items being highest priority and so on. Also, set time goals for your short term and long term items on your “to do” list.

This event will showcase personal spiritual treasures of faculty, staff and students. The items will be reviewed by a committee and if your treasure is selected, you will be invited to attend an event where you can explain the importance of your treasure with the UM and Miami communities. All students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to participate. This event will take place on November 12th at 7:00PM in the Lowe Art Museum. If you have a personal treasure you would like to display, contact MSA for more information at 305-284-2855.

• Tip #4: Avoid Overload. Be realistic with your time! Include time for rest, relaxation, eating, exercise, and socializing in your schedule. Take short breaks during study periods. Don’t put everything off until the last minute (don’t cram for exams), and most importantly, learn to say “no” when appropriate.

• Tip #5: Have a Vision! The most important tip, don’t lose sight of your “why.” Often you might ask yourself “Why am I doing all of this?”

Keeping the “big picture” in mind will help you get through your short term goals in order to accomplish your long term goals. Know what is important to you and have a positive attitude! Remember, nothing worth having comes easy!

Laverne Cox, star of Orange is the New Black and LGBT activist, will tell us about her journey to womanhood. This event will take place on Thursday, November 13th at 7:00PM in the SAC Grand Ballrooms.

Editor’s Column: ‘Canes Care for ‘Canes Don’t Hesitate to Seek Help!

‘Canes Care for ‘Canes is an initiative that furthers the commitment to supporting students in their academic and personal lives. This initiative provides resources for individuals, within the University of Miami community, who may encounter a student that needs assistance. By visiting the website, you may access a listing of university departments that respond to students, resource guides, campus programming opportunities, event calendar, informative multimedia, online community forum and the anonymous reporting form. The reporting form allows for members of the community to report a concern about a fellow ’Cane which will result in follow-up with the identified student by a representative of the Division of Student Affairs. United Black Students and UM Black Alumni Society Mixer UBS will be hosting a Homecoming Mixer with the UM Black Alumni Society next Friday, October 31st at 3:00PM in the United Black Students Office. In addition to single class passes, the Herbert Wellness Center offers semester passes for yoga and studio cycling classes.

These passes allow members to attend unlimited sessions of yoga or studio cycling (separate passes for each) throughout the semester. Beginning Monday, November 3rd, yoga passes are prorated to $30 and studio cycling to $12 for UM students.

Passes can be purchased from the sales office on the second floor of the Herbert Wellness Center.

Heartsaver CPR/AED Certification Course October 22nd

Brought to you by the Department of Wellness and Recreation and Sri Chinmoy Centres International, find your inner peace and enjoy a relaxing meditation class that is free and open to the public. The class is held on Monday, October 20th at 7:30PM. Comfortable clothing is recommended, but you do not need to bring anything with you to the class.

Registration is open for the Herbert Wellness Center’s Emergency Care CPR/AED certification course on Wednesday, October 22nd at 5:30PM Those enrolled in the course receive a 2-year certification from the American Heart Association. The cost is $35 for UM student members.

Dance, Martial Arts, Aquatics & Tennis Classes Registration Registration: October 20th - 31st

Dodgeball Tournament Deadline October 22nd

The Herbert Wellness Center offers many dance, aquatics, martial arts and tennis classes that are open to members and residents of the local community (non-members). Registration for Fall 2014 Session 2 classes opens Monday, October 20th and classes begin on Saturday, October 25th. A free trial for each class (first meeting only) is available starting October 25th and runs through October 31st. No registration is required for the free class.

Wednesday, October 22nd is the deadline to register for the Intramural dodgeball tournament. The tournament takes place on Friday, October 24th at 3:00PM at the Herbert Wellness Center.

Registration is available via IMLeagues.com/miami, and the entry fee is $10 per team of 6 players. Visit www.miami.edu/wellness/ intramurals for more information.

Trivia Tuesdays #AtTheRat October 21st

The Miss University of Miami Scholarship Pageant is the official preliminary with the Miss America Organization of Miss Florida.

The Miss America Organization is the world’s largest provider of scholarships to women in the world and has partnered with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to raise funds and awareness for children’s hospitals throughout the United States.

Come to the informational session to learn more about the pageant requirements! The informational session will be held Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00PM in the UC Room 205. For more information, email missuniversityofmiami@gmail.com.

As a part of National Health Education Week, the Herbert Wellness Center is partnering with the Rathskeller Advisory Board to bring Trivia Tuesdays at the Rat on Tuesday, October 21st at 6:30PM Trivia questions include pop culture with a special bonus round that includes health/wellness-related questions. Multiple gift cards to the Rat will be awarded as prizes.
