An Evening with José Galvez October 3rd at 6:30PM

Please join the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee and Multicultural Student Affairs in welcoming Pulitzer Prize winner Mr. José Galvez. For over 40 years, José has used film to create a historic record of the Latino experience. His work has been featured in many museums around the world, including the Smithsonian. This event will take place on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:30PM in the Faculty Club.

The Hispanic Heritage Month Committee and the Alliance of Latin American Students (ALAS) will be hosting Professionalism and Business Etiquette on October 10th at 6:00PM in the UC 233. This will be a panel discussion on graduate school and career preparation. The last event for Hispanic Heritage Month 2012 will be Dorm Storm in Hecht/Stanford Residence Hall. Stop by October 29th - November1st to see a display celebrating El Día de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead.

Flipping “U” Out Month

Formally known as Flipping “U” Out Week, Flipping “U” Out Month (FUO) is a series of events throughout the month of October used to promote modern Asian culture. All events are open to the public!

October 5th Get Your Game On Night UC 245 7:00PM Help us kick off our FUO Month by joining us for awesome competition and games. Applications available for our Ate/Kuya/Ading program.

October 12th Karaoke Night UC 245 7:00PM No experience needed here. Sing classics and some of today’s top songs with a fun crowd. Be sure to bring your duet partner because there will be multiple microphones.

October 19th Ramen Power Hour UC 245 7:00PM Get ready for FSA’s annual Ramen Noodle eating contest! There will be different competitions such as speed eating and quantity eating. The cost is $3 for non-members to participate, but the event is free to watch.

October 25th Movie Night UC 245 7:00PM Find us on Facebook and vote for what movie you would like to see!

Native American Month Programming Board Are you interested in commemorating the Native American culture? If so, be a part of the Native American Programming Board (NAPB) sponsored by Multicultural Student Affairs and help plan this year’s events.

Native American Heritage Month is a celebration that is held during the month of November to remember the contributions Native Americans have made to the United States. Michael Myers makes a splash on the big screen! Come see the original and best of the “Halloween” movies on Friday, November 2nd at 9:00PM. The pool will be warm, but the movie will be CHILLING!

Now is the time to search for an internship or full-time opportunity in the accounting field! The Accounting Career Fair is on Friday, October 5th from 12:00PM – 3:00PM in the Wellness Center, Centre Court.

Joining the 3-on-3 intramural basketball league is a slam dunk! The deadline to

Heart Saver CPR with AED October 3rd at 4:00PM Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Wednesday, October 3rd from 4:00PM – 6:00PM. The cost is $35 for student members, $40 for non-student members and $45 for non-members.

AIDS Memorial Art Expo Deadline: October 4th Calling All Artists! On October 8th, A Week 4 Life (AW4L) will further its advocacy for safer sex, HIV/AIDS awareness, and reproductive health through its 2nd Annual AIDS Memorial Art Expo at 7:00PM. All artists are invited to submit a piece of their own artwork to be showcased during this awareness event. Help bring our vision to life through this year’s theme “Consciousness and Potential.”

A first, second, and third place winner will be selected. The deadline for submissions is October 4th. Please submit all art submissions to the Butler Center in the UC 240. For more information, please email aweek4life@gmail.com.

Kaplan Free Practice Exams October 6th at 10:00AM On Saturday, October 6th, at 10:00AM in the UC 190, you can take free practice exams of the LSAT, MCAT, and GRE. You will recieve the following: a detailed score report that analyzes all of your strengths and weaknesses, valuable practice experience, and insight from Kaplan instructors following the exam. Pilates Session II Registration: October 8th Registration is now open for the fall semester’s second session of Pilates instruction. Pilates is one of the many community classes offered at the Herbert Wellness Center. You do not have to be a wellness member to sign up. Quick Kitchen Cooking Class October 10th at 6:30PM If you’re always on the go, Chef Mercedes will teach you some quick, yet fulfilling meals. The menu: Spiced Roasted Chickpeas with Turkey Kielbasa or Spanish Chorizo; Balsamic-Glazed Salmon with Spinach, Olives, and Golden Raisins; Pan-Roasted Smashed Potatoes with Piquillo Pepper Sauce and Catalan Allioli. The cost of the class, which includes cooking instruction, food tasting, and recipes, is $20 for UM students and Wellness Center members; $25 for non-members. The class is Wednesday, October 10th, from 6:30PM – 8:30PM. American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowship Program Deadline: November 1st The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships and grants to individuals to pursue research or study in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. Over $300,000 is available for the 2013-2014 competition. To be eligible: • Applicants must have a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential.

• Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

• Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education before start of their project in Scandinavia.

• Team projects are eligible, but each member must apply as an individual, submitting a separate, fully documented application.

Truman Scholarship Deadline: November 12th The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in all type of public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection and must have demonstrated interest and potential for careers in government, education or the non-profit and advocacy sectors.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Deadline: November 12th The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for outstanding students with excellent academic records, demonstrated interest in, and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior and must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree, have a B average or equivalent, stand in the upper fourth of the class, and be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national, who will pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. The White House Internship Program Deadline: November 14th The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for future public service opportunities.

DAAD Study Scholarship Deadline: November 15th Study Scholarships provide qualified individuals with an opportunity to conduct independent study or complete a full Master’s degree in Germany. German universities offer attractive graduate programs – in both English and German – in a wide variety of fields.

Presidential Management Fellowship Deadline: November 19th The Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) will be accepting applications from masters level students who will complete their requirements for graduation by August 31st and from individuals who received an advance degree from a qualifying college or university no more than 2 years prior to the opening date of the announcement on November 5th.

Interested candidates should search PMF on www.usajobs.gov.

MSA Connection: With Dr. Brian Blake!

Dr. Brian Blake is the new Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School. In this role, Dr. Blake is responsible for the oversight and advocacy of university-wide graduate programs, advocacy, enhancement, and policy matters regarding research programs on the Coral Gables campus, and oversight of university-wide faculty advancement and diversity efforts. Originally, his research investigates software engineering approaches for the integration of web-based systems where publications can be found in the domains of internet computing, adaptive workflow systems, web-based software engineering, and education, and innovative applications of software-as-a-service. Dr. Blake is origninally from Savannah, Georgia. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1994, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Mercer University in 1997, and his Ph.D. in Information and Software Engineering from George Mason University in 2000.

When asked to give students one piece of advice, Dr. Blake stated “Follow your passion and everything else will fall into place. Quality, Quality, Quality.” Dr. Blake’s favorite quote is “I have a pet-peeve that individuals should look, dive in, and not spin their wheels. Don’t be over critical without being constructive and productive.” Dr. Blake’s office is located in the Graduate School.
