Horizons Pre-Orientation Program Applications Due: February 18th Were you a Horizons Participant? Do you want to assist new students in their journey at the “U”? Then…become a Horizons Counselor! Responsibilities include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
Serve as a guide and mentor to new students. Participate in all Horizons activities. Welcome parents and families. Assist with execution of event, including: set-up and clean-up. Be friendly, outgoing, and honest. Follow-up with participants after Horizons is over. Must attend Horizons Counselor meet and greet. (Spring Semester) Must attend Horizons Counselor training (TBA) and Horizons Pre-Orientation Program (Aug. 21st) Have fun!
Black Awareness Month 2013 Black History Month was created as “Negro History Week” in 1926. The creator, Carter G.Woodson, chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, two crucial contributors in the progression of Black people in America. This year, United Black Students (UBS) is partnering with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) to presents Black Awareness Month 2013. This year’s theme is Sankofa, which means, “To go back and get it.” All events are open to the university community!
February 13th · Gospel Explosion UC Rock · 7:00PM Gospel Explosion celebrates the spirituality of Black Culture. It will include gospel music, step teams as well as spoken word performances. This event is hosted by UBS.
February 20th · Common Denominator Forum UC Ballrooms A&B · 7:00PM UBS, the Office of Academic Enhancement, Caribbean Student Association, Organization for Jamaican Unity, African Student Union, and Haitian Student Organization are hosting Common Denominator on February 20th. The Common Denominator will be an interactive forum discussing colorism within the black community. Light refreshments will be served.
February 23rd · BAM Day of Service Overtown Youth Center · 9:00AM Students will volunteer at the Overtown Youth Community Center, where they will host a tutoring session focused on preparation for the Florida’s Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and a carnival for the participants with activities focused on Black history. The event is sponsored by MSA, UBS, and the Butler Center for Service and Leadership.
February 26th · In Remembrance of Trayvon Martin Featuring Quraysh Ali Lansana Oasis Deli · 7:30PM MSA, UBS, and the Creative Writing Program present “In Remembrance of Trayvon Martin, Featuring Quraysh Ali Lansana.” This event will reflect upon the death of Trayvon Martin as a symbol for the many innocent people who have fallen to senseless violence. February 11th
Join MSA, the Toppel Career Center, and the Committee on Student Organizations for Opening Doors on February 28th at 6:30PM in the BankUnited Center Multipurpose Room. Opening Doors is an opportunity for student organizations to network exclusively with employers. Student groups and centers of excellence on campus will have booths to showcase their organization and how they serve the University of Miami community. These groups will compete for up to $2,000 in professional development scholarship prizes, sponsored by Target Corporation. For more information, contact Veronica Soto at veronica@miami.edu.
