BAM Opening Ceremonies February 4th at 7:00PM United Black Students and Multicultural Student Affairs will be hosting the 2013 Black Awareness Month Opening Ceremonies on February 4th at 7:00PM in the Wesley Art Gallery. Opening Ceremonies will feature American spoken word artist Taalam Acey. Acey has been featured on BET, TV One, and has authored four books. MLK Candle Light Closing Ceremonies January 30th at 7:00PM We’ve been to the Mountaintop and it is now time to reflect on our journey. Officials Training (Flag Football) Training: January 29th Want to earn some extra cash, but don’t have any experience and need flexible hours? Then become an official for the intramural Flag Football League!

Training will be held in the Herbert Wellness Center Classrooms January 29th at 7:00PM. Returning Flag Football officials preferred.

Flag Football Leagues Deadline: January 29th Don’t stand on the sidelines—get in on the football action! Registration is now taking place for the flag football intramural leagues. The deadline to sign up is January 29th. Captains or a team representative must attend the captains meeting on January 31st at 5:30PM. A $40 refundable deposit is due at the time of registration. Don’t have a team? No problem! Just sign up as a free agent on the roster (free agent meeting is on January 29th at 5:00PM). To sign up, go to room 210 of the Herbert Wellness Center.

What you need to know about Sports Concussions January 31st at 12:00PM Don’t be fooled into thinking that only professional athletes need to be concerned about the long-term effects of a concussion. If you are the parent of an athlete or an athlete, then you need to attend this informative session featuring Dr. Gillian Hotz, research associate professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Hotz will discuss the symptoms, testing, and treatment of a concussion at a lunch and learn event at 12:00PM on Thursday, January 31st, in the Herbert Wellness Center classrooms. Campus Involvement Opporunities Special Interest Housing Deadline: February 6th The Special Interest Housing (SIH) program is a collaborative effort between the Office of Academic Enhancement and the Department of Housing and Residential Life. This initiative provides students united by a common interest, activity, or cause the opportunity to create uniquely themed living communities in Mahoney and Pearson Residential Colleges that provide educational opportunities and enhance their on-campus living experience. In addition to living together, these students receive funding, advising, and specialized training to assist in the programming and management of their communities. • One piece of advice you would give students: Starting thinking about your career goals and working towards them early in your college career. There are so many majors, internships, and career paths to explore, and you have so many opportunities available to you. Take a career assessment, meet and talk to people in careers of interests, and get your resume critiqued so you can apply to internships that interest you. If you plan ahead, you can study, intern, volunteer, research, participate in student organizations, study abroad, and have fun!

The MSA Spotlight: Black Awareness Month!

Black History Month, was created as “Negro History Week” in 1926. The creator, Carter G.Woodson, chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, two crucial contributors in the progression of Black people in America. This year, United Black Students is partnering with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs to presents Black Awareness Month 2013. This year’s theme is Sankofa, which means “to go back and get it.”

The History of Sankofa

For more information, visit http://ctl.du.edu/spirituals/literature/sankofa.cfm. “…Sankofa is an Akan term that literally means, “to go back and get it.” One of the Adinkra symbols for Sankofa (seen on the left) depicts a mythical bird flying forward with its head turned backward. The egg in its mouth represents the “gems” or knowledge of the past upon which wisdom is based; it also signifies the generation to come that would benefit from that wisdom. This symbol often is associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,” which translates to, “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” The Akan believe that the past illuminates the present and that the search for knowledge is a life-long process. The pictograph illustrates the quest for knowledge, while the proverb suggests the rightness of such a quest as long as it is based on knowledge of the past.” (san = “to return”) + (ko = “to go”) + (fa = “to look, to seek and take”)

“Contemporary African American communities include descendents of the Akan and many other West African tribal groups whose members were transported to North America during the slave trade. And while writing systems, cosmology, and religious figures may have been replaced, there is still much that is African among African Americans. A continuation of African religious ontology can be found in the African American community’s deep attachment to and involvement with the Christian church. A continuation of the Akan pictorial writing system can be found in many African American communities in the “graffiti art” murals that transmit cultural ideals and values. Moreover, a continuation of the philosophical expressions of African spirituality also can be found in many of today’s African American communities, where the concept of Sankofa exists in the form of the oft-repeated proverb: “You can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you come from.”

Student Reflections “Black Awareness Month is much more than a celebration for me. It means honor, perseverance, bravery and change. When I think about the history of people of African descent, I am amazed at the impact they have had on the world. I take pride in the individuality that encompasses being Black. This year, the theme of BAM will be Sankofa: Lift As We Climb. In conjunction with UBS’s theme this year, Movin’ On Up’, we hope to elevate everyone’s mind, body, and spirit through various programs that explore the essence of Black history and culture. You are definitely in for a treat...this will be a February to remember.”
