Black Awareness Month February 4th United Black Students is partnering with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs to presents Black Awareness Month 2013. Black History Month, which was created as “Negro History Week” in 1926. The creator, Carter G.Woodson, chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, two crucial contributors in the progression of Black people in America. The Mountain Top: MLK 2013 Celebration Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Dr. King is remembered as an important historical figure in the civil rights movement, which protested racial discrimination. The MLK Holiday was signed into law in 1983 and for the first time in 2000 was officially observed in all 50 states. Join UBS, MSA, Unity Roundtable, Social Justice Committee, and Butler Center for Service and Leadership for a week full of events as we remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Opening Ceremonies January 22nd 7:00PM Shoma Hall Come out for a night of inspiration and remembrance commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement.

UNLearn: The Narrative January 24th 7:00PM I-Lounge Join us as we discuss commonly omitted facts regarding Dr. King, other civil rights leaders and the civil rights movement. You will gain a new perspective on the movement.
