Black Awareness Month February 4th United Black Students is partnering with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs to presents Black Awareness Month 2013. Black History Month, which was created as “Negro History Week” in 1926.

The Mountain Top: MLK 2013 Celebration Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Dr. King is remembered as an important historical figure in the civil rights movement, which protested racial discrimination.

The MLK Holiday was signed into law in 1983 and for the first time in 2000 was officially observed in all 50 states. Join UBS, MSA, Unity Roundtable, Social Justice Committee, and Butler Center for Service and Leadership for a week full of events as we remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Opening Ceremonies

Studio Cycling, Yoga or Both!

Studio Cycling and Yoga passes are on sale at the Herbert Wellness Center. The new cycling studio with a video wall has taken the indoor cycling experience to a whole new level. The yoga schedule includes a variety of Yoga styles-Sivananda, Vinyasa Flow, Power, and Hatha. A semester pass cost $60 for student members and $96 for non-student members. This pass gives you unlimited access to scheduled Yoga classes or Study Cycling classes. Student members can purchase a combo pass for $90 and non-student members can purchase them for $144. The combo pass gives you unlimited access to all cycling and yoga classes. To purchase your pass, go to the Sales Office located on the second floor of the Herbert Wellness Center.

Officials Training (Basketball) Training: January 22nd - 24th Want to earn some extra cash but don’t have any experience and need flexible hours? Then become an official for the intramural Basketball League! Training will be held in the Herbert Wellness Center Classrooms January 22nd -24th at 7:00PM. (Note: you must attend the training session on January 22nd or January 23th and the training session on January 24th).

Basketball Deadline: January 22nd Can you go hard in the paint like the Heat? Registration is now taking place for basketball intramurals! The deadline to sign up is January 22nd. All captains must attend a meeting on January 24th at 5:30PM. A $40 refundable deposit is due at the time of registration. Don’t have a team? Just sign up as a free agent on the roster (free agent meeting is on January 22nd at 5:00PM). To sign up, go to room 210 of the Herbert Wellness Center.

Pre-Season Basketball Tournament Deadline: January 23rd Got game like EA? Register for the Pre-Season Basketball Tournament. The deadline to sign up is January 23rd. A $20 per team fee is due at the time of registration. The tournament will take place on January 26th at 10:00AM. To sign up, go to room 210 of the Herbert Wellness Center.

What You Need to Know about Sports Concussions Deadline: January 31st Don’t be fooled into thinking that only professional athletes need to be concerned about the long-term effects of a concussion. If you are the parent of an athlete or you play sports yourself, then you should attend this informative session featuring Dr. Hotz, research associate professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Hotz will discuss the symptoms, testing, and treatment of a concussion at a lunch and learn event at noon on January 31st, in the Herbert Wellness Center classrooms. Bring your own lunch or you may purchase a healthy lunch at the Wellness Center Courtside Eatery.

Brief Discription

Participants will engage in basic, clinical, or translational research projects under the supervision of BWH faculty advisors.

Participants will study a target language intensively at UF during the summer of 2013 and will study in another nation during the Fall 2013 semester.

Participants willl gain practical educational training experience in science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities.

Participants will study technology and public policy issues with handson experience in Washington, D.C.

Participants will study diversity, ethics issues, and in learning about high-tech public policy issues.

The MSA Spotlight: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was famous for using nonviolent resistance to overcome injustice and he worked to end segregation laws. Dr. King became known world wide through his speeches, such as “I Have a Dream” and “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.” In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize - the youngest person ever to receive this honor. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, when he was just 39 years old. His birthday is now observed as a national holiday on the third Monday in January.

… something is happening in our world. And you know, if I were standing at the beginning of time, with the possibility of taking a kind of general and panoramic view of the whole of human history up to now, and the Almighty said to me, “Martin Luther King, which age would you like to live in?” I would take my mental flight by Egypt and I would watch God’s children in their magnificent trek from the dark dungeons of Egypt through, or rather across the Red Sea, through the wilderness on toward the promised land. And in spite of its magnificence, I wouldn’t stop there.

••• I would come on up even to 1863, and watch a vacillating President by the name of Abraham Lincoln finally come to the conclusion that he had to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. But I wouldn’t stop there.

I would even come up to the early thirties, and see a man grappling with the problems of the bankruptcy of his nation. And come with an eloquent cry that we have nothing to fear but “fear itself.”

But I wouldn’t stop there.

Strangely enough, I would turn to the Almighty, and say, “If you allow me to live just a few years in the second half of the 20th century, I will be happy.”

Now that’s a strange statement to make, because the world is all messed up. The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land; confusion all around. Something is happening in our world.

Now we’re going to march again, and we’ve got to march again, in order to put the issue where it is supposed to be — and force everybody to see … God’s children here suffering, sometimes going hungry, going through dark and dreary nights wondering how this thing is going to come out. That’s the issue.

••• Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop.

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!

Student Reflections “When I think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I think of history, leadership, equality, and social justice. His life and legacy has made him a statement in American history and an icon to those who serve their communities.

In his speech entitled “I’ve Been to The Mountaintop,” Dr. King speaks about many things including his near death experience in New York during a book signing. This speech reminds me that there are still battles of equality to be fought in America. Although we may not see changes in our lifetime, those who come after us will, as long as we lay the foundation for change and continue to serve.”
