MSA Buzz! Hispanic Heritage Month 2012

MSA & Target Partnership Multicultural Student Affairs(MSA) is pleased to announce Mr. JosephChoi as this year’s recipient of the Horizons 2012 Diversity Leadership Scholarship sponsored by Target. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students were required to attend the Horizons Pre-Orientation Program, complete an application, and submit a one-page essay on “Why diversity leadership is important in today’s corporate America”. MSA continues to coordinate programs that provide an opportunity for students to engage in dialogue about diversity and multiculturalism. Target is proud to support programs that directly impact diversity, leadership, academics, and volunteerism. Expect more great programs, events, and opportunities in the future as a result of this new partnership between MSA and Target! Student Sucess Series September 26th at 5:00PM The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs will be hosting Characteristics of Successful Students on September 26 at 5:00PM in Mahoney Master’s Apartment. Please join Dr. Laura Kohn-Wood and upperclassmen students as they give insightful tips about how to be a successful student at the University of Miami. Light refreshments will be served. Hispanic Heritage Month is finally here! Please join us tomorrow at 4:00PM for Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremonies on the UC Rock. Opening Ceremonies will feature performances from UM’s Latino/Latina Greek letter organizations and Salsa Craze. In addition, there will be a DJ, entertainment, and refreshments. Other upcoming events for Hispanic Heritage Month include: October 3rd An Evening with Jose Galvez 6:00PM Faculty Club Pultizer Prize winner Jose Galvez will be displaying his amazing exhibit and sharing his experiences.

October 10th Professionalism and Business Etiquette 6:00PM UC 233 Panel discussion will feature a professional from H&R Block, Toppel Career Center, and two graduate students to answer questions about graduate school and career preparation. October 29th - November 1st Dorm Storm Hecht/Stanford Residence Hall Stop by Hecht/Stanford Residence Hall between October 29th - November 1st to see a display celebrating El Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. Dr. Shaun Harper RSVP by September 17th Please join the Office of Academic Enhancement, The Woodson-Williams Marshall Association, and Multicultural Student Affairs in welcoming Dr. Shaun Harper on September 20th and 21st. Dr. Harper is the Director of the Center of the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Harper’s research examines race and gender in higher education, black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. On Thursday, September 20th, in the Wesley Gallery, Dr. Harper will hold a discussion on “Cross-Cultural Learning & Engagement” at 6:30PM. Light refreshments will be provided. On Friday, September 21st, in the Newman Alumni Center Multipurpose Room, Dr. Harper will host a conversation on “Why Some Black Men Succeed in College.” Brunch will be available at 11:00AM and the program will begin promptly at 11:30AM.
