MSA Buzz! Hispanic Heritage Month 2012
MSA & Target Partnership Multicultural Student Affairs(MSA) is pleased to announce Mr. JosephChoi as this year’s recipient of the Horizons 2012 Diversity Leadership Scholarship sponsored by Target. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students were required to attend the Horizons Pre-Orientation Program, complete an application, and submit a one-page essay on “Why diversity leadership is important in today’s corporate America”. MSA continues to coordinate programs that provide an opportunity for students to engage in dialogue about diversity and multiculturalism. Target is proud to support programs that directly impact diversity, leadership, academics, and volunteerism. Expect more great programs, events, and opportunities in the future as a result of this new partnership between MSA and Target! Student Sucess Series September 26th at 5:00PM The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs will be hosting Characteristics of Successful Students on September 26 at 5:00PM in Mahoney Master’s Apartment. Hispanic Heritage Month is finally here! Please join us tomorrow at 4:00PM for Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremonies on the UC Rock. Opening Ceremonies will feature performances from UM’s Latino/Latina Greek letter organizations and Salsa Craze. In addition, there will be a DJ, entertainment, and refreshments. Dr. Shaun Harper RSVP by September 17th Please join the Office of Academic Enhancement, The Woodson-Williams Marshall Association, and Multicultural Student Affairs in welcoming Dr. Shaun Harper on September 20th and 21st. Dr. Harper is the Director of the Center of the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Harper’s research examines race and gender in higher education, black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. On Thursday, September 20th, in the Wesley Gallery, Dr. Harper will hold a discussion on “Cross-Cultural Learning & Engagement” at 6:30PM. Light refreshments will be provided. On Friday, September 21st, in the Newman Alumni Center Multipurpose Room, Dr. Harper will host a conversation on “Why Some Black Men Succeed in College.” Brunch will be available at 11:00AM and the program will begin promptly at 11:30AM. Get Involved! Volleyball Officials Training Training is September18th September 20th Want to earn some extra cash but don’t have any experience and need flexible hours? Then become an official for the intramural Volleyball League! Training will be held in the Herbert Wellness Center Classrooms September 18th-20th at 7:00PM. (Note: you must attend the training session on September 18th or September 19th and the training session on September 20th.) The Herbert Wellness Center is hosting a Golf Scramble tournament on September 28th at the Miami Springs Golf Club. The event is open to everybody. The cost to play is $30 for students, UM faculty and staff, and the community. The deadline to register is September 19th in room 210 of the Herbert Wellness Center. The first place winner in the student division will win a trip to Las Vegas to compete in a national tournament on November 10th through November 11th (airfare not included). Keeping Up with Korea Cooking Class Tournament Class is September 24th Interested in learning how to prepare Korean cuisine? Chef Mercedes is here to educate you. The menu includes Korean Dumplings; Chapchae; Korean BBQ Tofu; Korean BBQ Chicken. The cost of the class, which includes September 17
cooking instruction, food tasting, and recipes, is $20 for UM students and Wellness Center members; $25 for non-members. The class is Monday, September 24th, from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. Meditation Class Class is September 25th Namaste students! Are classes, social life, and work stressing you out? Take a break and meditate! You will develop mental clarity and discipline that will help you focus and improve concentration (great skills when it comes to studying!) Lunthita Duthely, a follower of the teachings of Sri Chinmoy, will guide and instruct participants through the meditation. The meditation is Tuesday, September 25th, from 7:30PM to 9:00PM at the Herbert Wellness Center. Instruction is free and open to everybody. Heartsaver CPR with AED Class is September 24th Heart Saver CPR with AED course teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Monday, September 24th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. The cost is $35 for student members, $40 for non-student members and $45 for non-members. Scholarships/Internships! Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Deadline: October 2nd The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000. Ford Fellowship Program Deadline: November 14th In 2013, the Ford Fellowship Program will award approximately 60 predoctoral fellowships. The predoctoral fellowships provide three years of support for individuals engaged in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. Predoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards will be made to individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Cultural Vistas and the German Academic Exchange Service Deadline: November 14th Cultural Vistas and the German Academic Exchange Service will be presenting funding opportunities for study, internships, and research in Germany, Russia, U.K., Brazil, Japan, Austria, Argentina, Chile, Germany, and Spain. The White House Internship Program Deadline: November 14th The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for future public service opportunities. The White House Internship Program’s mission is to make the “People’s House” accessible to future leaders from around the nation.

American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowship Program Deadline: November 1st The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships and grants to individuals to pursue research or study in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. Over $300,000 is available for the 2013-2014 competition. To be eligible: • Applicants must have a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. • Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. • Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education before start of their project in Scandinavia. • Team projects are eligible, but each member must apply as an individual, submitting a separate, fully-documented application. MSA Connection: With MaritzaTorres! MSA would like to introduce Maritza Torres. Maritza hales from Chicago, IL and is the Assistant Director of Student Activities and Student Organizations. As the Assistant Director, Maritza advises the Committee on Student Organizations, manages the OrgSync database, and handles simple contracts. Maritza graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and The University of Florida with a Master of Education in Student Personnel in Higher Education. When asked to give students one piece of advice, Maritza stated “I like to encourage all students to get involved on campus and hold leadership positions! You will learn so much more about yourself and others! Maritza’s favorite quote by Max Ehrmann is “ Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.” Make sure to say hello to Maritza when you see her around campus! Her office is located in the Whitten University Center room 209.
