Editor’s introduction-

Half of Term two has already past and what an exciting half term it’s been!

Our Year 12 students recently went to Vietnam to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh and complete some of their CAS activities. When arriving back into school, the students were full of stories to tell about their once in a life time trip.

February also marks a time of reflection and renewal as we bid farewell to the winter months and eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring. It's a season of transition, where we shed the layers of the past and embrace the promise of new beginnings. In this issue, we invite you to join us in embracing change, embracing growth, and embracing the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

As always, I extend a huge gratitude to the writers and artists of the gazette whose commitment continue to fuel the pages of the JESS Gazette. Thank you to those who contribute to the gazette and thank you for your dedication!

Behind the Scenes: Sixth Form & Staff Coffee Cart

Whether it’s for a quick snack or a much-needed caffeine boost before an exam, the JESS Coffee Cart is beloved by both staff and students. With the new-found privilege for Year 12s of having access to hot beverages in between lessons, it’s important to take a look at what happens behind the scenes in order to meet our needs and expectations.

During an interview with some familiar faces from behind the counter, they revealed the planning needed to prepare for the average school day – from handling equipment and stacking shelves to cleaning and restarting for the next day. The most time-demanding chores are handled early in the morning, such as cleaning out the coffee machine and stocking up for the day, while other things such as re-stocking products can be dealt with throughout the day.

According to them, the most popular beverage are smoothies, while the busiest periods are naturally break and lunch times. Some challenges faced while working include impatient students and teachers that leave no room for error – I’m sure some faces come to mind – though the most rewarding aspects brought from the job are the quick chats and banter shared over the counter. Long-lasting relationships have definitely been built over the course of the school term, helping to improve the site’s overall atmosphere.

Lastly, for a bit more input in the organization and effort put behind the cart, the menu changes every two weeks with new products being introduced to students in order to expand their taste barriers – never leaving a moment for boredom or repetition on the tongue.

So, next time you find yourself in a breaktime rush, make sure to take a moment to appreciate the time and patience it takes behind what you see. After all, the coffee cart is a huge aspect of our everyday routines and the staff make a huge contribution in our school community – take a deep breath and enjoy your coffee!

Behind the Scenes: Teachers Life at JESS

Receiving feedback from students throughout the years can be very insightful to JESS’ progress, however taking a look into our educators’ experiences here can be very eye opening and brings a new flavour of perspective as well! A small interview was conducted to open gates of our teachers and supporting staffs lives at our school and here is what some of them had to some of them had to say:

When Ms Carr, our GCSE and IDBP Psychology teacher, was asked to use one word to describe her experience at JESS she had said that it was ‘inspiring’.

Along with this Mr Zakir, who works very hard in our reprographics department, was asked what his favourite experince here at JESS was to which he had said ‘International day and EID’.

And finally when asked Mr Jones, our enthusiastic head of Year 12, what his future goals here at JESS are, he said he wanted ‘To get our year group through Year 12 and 13 and to get their best possible results they can so they can go onto their future pathways.’

Overall, to conclude our mini exploration of the lives of our JESS educators, it becomes evident that their experiences are as diverse and meaningful as the students that they support. Uncovering every teacher’s experience can be very essential in building a strong rapport between students and educators. Additionally, identifying the unique contributions each individual offers in building our JESS community higher must be essentially recognised and valued. As we continue moving forward, it is vital to cherish and celebrate the invaluable attributions of our teachers and supporting staff, for they are the foundation of our educational

Picking and Choosing the Right University for You

As we all begin to select which universities to spend the next few years of our learning journeys at, it’s important to ask ourselves the right questions, to ensure we are making informed decisions. Firstly, reflect on the subjects you are currently taking. Which ones do you find the most interesting? Maybe you have a vague idea of a career path you might like to follow? Do you see yourself studying something sciency, or more humanitiesy? Would you rather work with people, nature, animals, in a lab, an office, or maybe even on stage?

I suggest taking a few personality quizzes to also help you figure out your strengths and suggest things you might enjoy. These questions will all allow you to find undergraduate courses you may enjoy. Next, research globally ranked schools in your field of interest and evaluate their programs. Consider your learning experience. Do you prefer big or small classes? Lectures or seminars? Coursework or exams?

Once you’ve made lists of what you like and dislike, start thinking about where you will actually be- because this may actually matter to you just as much! What weather do you like? Do you prefer busy cities or quiet towns? Do you want to be surrounded by a foreign language? Expats or locals? Is nightlife and things to do important to you?

Now all that’s left is to find cities that suit your preferences and means. Search for universities in the area that align with what you want to study, and what you want in a school (everything considered above, facilities, accommodation, etc.)

If you happen to travel to a country you’re considering during the spring/summer break, it may be a good idea to visit the schools you are interested in! At the end of the day, finding the right university is not just about prestige but also finding the right school for you. While this can all seem a bit stressful for now, relax, because you do have time! Take advantage of the fact you have 2 amazing university counsellors right in the common room. Remember, this is the start of a new chapter of your life, it should be exciting, so relax and enjoy it!

Y12 Vietnam trip

Our Year 12 students embarked on an unforgettable journey through Vietnam, a trip designed to blend adventure, cultural immersion, and community service, all integral components of their CAS experiences. The expedition commenced with a moving exploration of the historic Cu Chi tunnels, where students explored into the survival tactics during wartime.

Following this, the group engaged in a unique activity reminiscent of the past ,gun shooting, providing a glimpse into the challenges faced by soldiers. Energized by their historical immersion, they stocked up on supplies for the upcoming trek, an hard yet exciting journey

The trek itself was a test of resilience and teamwork, with students conquering steep mountains and even trying abseiling down a 30-meter descent. Camp nights were enriched with vibrant Vietnamese cultural performances, fostering appreciation and understanding

As the journey progressed, the itinerary catered to both the adventurous spirit and the creative nature of the students. While some continued their trekking, others immersed themselves in Vietnamese culinary traditions, preparing meals judged by teachers for friendly competition.

The CAS students were then treated to a day of water experiences, taking part in water walking and snorkeling before visiting the mud baths and relaxing. A visit to a local market allowed them to collect souvenirs, each one a reminder of their impactful journey.

The final leg of their adventure saw the Gold students rising before dawn to conclude their trek, while the CAS group delved deeper into Vietnam's rich history at a religious temple. Reunited, they shared a celebratory dinner before embarking on a scenic boat ride along the Mekong delta.

Arriving at their destination, students wholeheartedly embraced their role as community builders, dedicating themselves to constructing houses for those in need. Despite the physical demands, their efforts were met with fulfilment, followed by a visit to a bustling market to commemorate their accomplishments.

As the journey drew to a close, students reflected on their experiences, bidding Vietnam farewell with a mixture of nostalgia and gratitude, their hearts forever enriched by the memories in Vietnam.

How could JESS be more eco-friendly?

In the face of global environmental challenges, it is crucial that we take steps to make our school more eco-friendly. By adopting sustainable practices and promoting environmental consciousness, we can contribute to a healthier planet. Here are several ways we can work together to transform our school into a greener, more sustainable environment:

Engage in Community Cleanups: We can also organize periodic cleanups in and around the school premises. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also allows a sense of pride and responsibility for our environment.

Green Transportation: We should promote eco-friendly commuting options such as biking, walking, or carpooling. To encourage the use of public transportation we can provide designated parking spaces for carpools as it is hard to find parking spaces in the morning since it gets so busy.

Water Conservation: Install water-saving fixtures like low-flow toilets and faucets. Educate students and staff on the importance of conserving water and avoiding wastage.

By incorporating these 3 eco-friendly initiatives, we can collectively contribute to creating a more sustainable and environmentally conscious school. Let's work together to make a positive impact on our campus and set an example for future generations!
