Welcome To A New Season
IT STARTED WITH a conversation with a member’s teenage son. His ideas blew us away. He had thoughts on gaming, virtual reality, and much more—ideas that truthfully, our executive team (whose combined ages and experience levels are many times that of this young man’s) could not have fully imagined. So we listened.
And that’s where much of The Boca Raton’s evolution in the past year has come from: through meaningful conversations and interactions with our members and guests, including the youngest ones. These talks have made our transformation even more personal. It’s been a year’s worth of celebration and changes, a defining time for The Boca Raton as our beloved members and guests find new ways to experience the property.
In the conversation with the young teen, he discussed how he and his buddies find comfort in being in spaces with other like-minded teens. It made him feel more welcomed, he said. And that’s exactly the environment at The Boca Raton, a venue where families can be inspired to connect in profound ways while also allowing each family member to enjoy their own space to pursue individual interests. That includes the newly opened The Break, a nearly 1,000-square-foot lounge at Harborside Pool Club dedicated to tweens, including a mocktail bar and virtual reality gaming. The parent-free zone is a chance for kids to be themselves and socialize on their terms.
This spring, you will also find new dining concepts that will allow you to continue connecting with family and friends (and yourself!). For easy days and nights that offer a wide selection of Florida-inspired cuisine, we invite you to enjoy a meal at Harbor House at Harborside Pool Club, where the effortlessly elevated environment might inspire you to come back for the weekend live music. There’s also the newly opened Burger Bar, our grab-andgo option with handcrafted hamburgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes that are served fresh and fast, allowing you to quickly get back to your activities.
Members and guests also find a new option to stay while on property. After a head-to-toe overhaul that includes a beautiful new light pink exterior and revamped rooms and suites with artful touches, Tower has reopened. The iconic hotel’s origin story
started in 1969 as the tallest building in the Boca Raton skyline, and when guests visit it today, they will continue to be in awe of the 360-degree coastal views that this 27-story luxury enclave has to offer.
This issue also reacquaints readers with some of our dedicated team members who are integral to our mission of creating endless possibilities. On page 42, we catch up with Stephen Day, the property’s long-time pastry chef; Corinne Heyl, the general manager of Tower and Yacht Club; and Marcell Samuels-Russell, the director of retail. Read about the individuals who make up The Boca Raton, and in turn, inspire us.
We hope you enjoy this issue of 1926. Welcome to another extraordinary season at The Boca Raton.

CATCH A WAVE
Bring on the excitement with the FlowRider wave simulator, now open at Harborside Pool Club. The nearly 40-foot-long wave-shaped device simulates a continuous wave, allowing passengers to lie down to boogie board or stand up to surf. It offers limitless fun for both participants and spectators, with the former invited to perform acrobatic maneuvers on the continuous sheet wave.
DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT?
For action-packed days at Harborside Pool Club, pausing for a brief bite is a must to refuel. Enjoy scrumptious sustenance on the run with a variety of to-go offerings from Burger Bar—from a single or double patty Smashburger with signature sauce to a fried chicken burger or grilled hot dog. The only hard part is deciding between a side of curly fries or onion rings. Luckily the 50/50 option invites you to munch on both.
SPOTLIGHT: GOLF
The Boca Raton welcomes new Director of Golf Zack Stanley to lead its championship-level golf course, as it shifts its focus to an even more elevated golf experience—one that is full of personal, bespoke touches developed by a dedicated professional with an impressive background in the game. A graduate of the University of Florida, Stanley is a Florida native who began playing golf as a preschooler with his father. In leading The Boca Raton’s course into a new era, Stanley sees one of his best assets as making himself available to members and guests, a culture he is cultivating within the club to ensure accessibility and approachability.
“At the end of the day, that golf ball doesn’t care who hits it or stands over it,” says Stanley, who most recently was the head golf professional at storied Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course, where he fine-tuned his skills alongside the club’s Director of Golf and Chief Operating Officer Jim Smith, Jr., a finalist for Golf Executive of the Year by PGA of America. “For me, it’s about taking each individual and providing them what they need to improve their game. Those details define us. It’s not the big things; it’s the little things that add up to an overall high-level experience at The Boca Raton.”
Stanley’s broad background of operating a world-class facility and giving members an extraordinary experience both on and off the course was also honed while serving as the head golf professional of the celebrated Course No. 8 at Pinehurst Resort and assistant golf professional of courses No. 1-5. Today, he looks to bring his personalized, accessible touch to The Boca Raton. As he puts it, “I am available to members and guests, and want them to know that as we enter this new era of golf, we’re here to make a difference in their experience and game.”
QUICK SHOTS WITH ZACK STANLEY
Favorite swing on the Tour: “Louis Oosthuizen”
Golf gear that you can’t live without: “I use foreign currency as a tool to mark my golf ball on the green.”
Best golf advice: “Keep the putter head low to the hole.”
What three other people would make your ideal foursome: “Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and my dad. Walking 18 holes with two of the greatest golfers to ever play the game, to hear their stories, and to share that experience with my dad would be incredible.”
What’s currently in your golf bag: “All Callaway golf clubs.”
Best personal memory on the course: “During my time as a golf professional at Pinehurst Resort, my dad would visit from Florida and drive to North Carolina for us to play golf together. Having the opportunity to take my dad golfing on some of the best golf courses in the U.S. is a special memory.”
Favorite course feature at The Boca Raton: “The gentle undulation and slope around the greens, though you can’t beat the Toptracer driving range either!”
TAKE A BREAK AT THE BREAK
Kids just want to have fun—so make sure you let yours head to The Break. This new hangout at Harborside Pool Club is full of entertaining options for ages 11 to 15. Above Harbor House restaurant, The Break offers exciting amenities such as a mocktail bar, candy wall, virtual reality gaming system, and TikTok booth. The Break is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Beginning at 2 p.m., there is hour-long, attendant-led programming such as simulated surfing, podcasting tutorials, interactive games and contests, and group challenges, all done in a relaxed and safe social environment.
SPOTLIGHT: BANYAN BUNCH
Banyan Bunch is a year-round daily dropoff kids program that’s known for its fun, dynamic, and enriching experiences for ages 4 to 12. The 2,300-square-foot kids’ club at Harborside Pool Club is home to an indoor play space (complete with a replica banyan tree at its center) and an outdoor pirates-themed playground with a splash pad and large-scale pirate ship (watch out for the water cannons!). Families can take advantage of the daily drop-off program and activities.
The program is based on four key areas: explore, create, discover, and imagine. The schedule includes a rotation of fun and educational youth-specific activities, such as yoga, art, physical exercise, scavenger hunts, nature walks and community building. With a no-electronics/screen time policy, Banyan Bunch brings a renewed focus on peer-topeer activities.
NOW OPEN: FLYBRIDGE
Dine with the stars at the brand-new Flybridge restaurant, where guests will experience magnificent views of Lake Boca Raton and beyond from the top-floor restaurant of Yacht Club. Flybridge is a fine-dining concept exclusive to guests of Yacht Club and Club members, embodying coastal elegance with its interior design that resembles a yacht with resin teak, blue hues, and high-gloss white paint and chrome accents. The restaurant’s executive chef, Peter Annewanter, brings his background from several different kitchens (including a Michelin-star restaurant in Austria) and applies those skills to the fresh, Florida-based ingredients served at Flybridge. We sit down with Annewanter to discover what exactly makes Flybridge a unique experience.
What does the Florida setting and its natural resources offer that you’re excited to work with?
“I think the possibilities can be near endless in creating Florida cuisine. This entire state influences me, from the fresh fish to the climate. My Austrian influence will always play a role because it is my home country and because it has a diverse cuisine, which is also made up of so many cultures, like here in the United States. And that’s the nice thing about the cooking profession: It can be so diverse. I count myself lucky to have a career that I enjoy and that is never boring.”
How would you describe the menu at Flybridge?
“Flybridge’s menu is connected to coastal cuisine and the South Florida region, but what sets us apart is that we have two menus: one that is fish-heavy with the option of a meat dish, and the second menu is purely vegetarian, with the option to switch between the menus.”
How would you describe the dining experience at Flybridge?
“At Flybridge, it is not just about the food; it’s a culinary experience with a magnificent view of the ocean—while dining on the best that Florida has to offer, including the freshest products prepared with great care and skill.”
What are you looking to achieve at Flybridge that’s different from other restaurants at The Boca Raton?
“Flybridge is unlike any other restaurant at The Boca Raton. Here, we provide guests with a memorable evening featuring food as the centerpiece. I always compare it to going to a concert: It’s different than listening to music in the car. We place great value on pure and unadulterated taste, like the bread and beyond; finding the perfect salts from Florida and the world; fresh fish from our fisherman, Eric Finn; mushrooms from the local Gratitude Farms; vegetables from the surrounding area; and a large portion of Austrian creativity.”
REFLECTIONS WITH DANIEL HOSTETTLER, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE BOCA RATON
The past year has seen monumental movements within The Boca Raton, including multiple renovations and key openings on the property. As we celebrate the milestones, President and CEO Daniel Hostettler discusses some highlights.
What would you consider key accomplishments that The Boca Raton achieved for members and guests in 2022?
“Our ultimate goal has been to return The Boca Raton to an iconic, independent, legendary, service-oriented property. That has been accomplished with the opening of three new restaurants, Principessa Ristorante, Flybridge, and Japanese Bocce Club. In addition, Spa Palmera was completely renovated and reopened in 2022. We also introduced FlowRider and The Break, two unique, high-quality family-friendly amenities at Harborside Pool Club. And this past fall, we reopened a newly reimagined Tower,
bringing the historic hotel back to life.
“In terms of event programming, our team did a phenomenal job elevating the quality and quantity, creating 10 times the number of events as was previously offered. We have a really robust schedule of events that are designed to engage every member and guest.
“At the end of the day, we want our members and guests to feel valued because they are. We’re seeing evidence that our efforts are making a difference, with new members joining, including young families who enjoy our dedicated programming. That coincides with our resort guests, who are now more leisure-oriented (as opposed to business-related travelers).
In addition to Tower’s reopening, tell us about the achievements of the four other hotels?
“We’re excited about the Phase 1 renovation of Beach Club, which includes nourishing the beach itself, as well as adding 1,000 new chairs and umbrellas. Next year, we’re looking toward important additions at Beach Club with a new kitchen, and service bar and kiosk, designed to make service even faster for those relaxing on our private golden beach. We’ve also introduced cabana transformations, collaborating with fashion brand Vilebrequin to showcase vibrant, stylish cabanas.
“The other hotels have made outstanding additions. At Yacht Club, we launched Flybridge, a restaurant that’s exclusive to Yacht Club guests, though we’re happy to hold a handful of tables for members, too. With Bungalows, we’ve built upon the idea that it’s a resort within a resort by adding a nine-hole putting course and a sitting area with a fire pit. Cloister is completing its nearly 15,000 square feet of retail space, which will add so much energy and life to the main building. And with Tower, we couldn’t be more thrilled with its opening. It’s such an iconic building and property, and to bring it a new vibrant, sophisticated glow is a commendable achievement for our team.”
What’s the general reaction to how 2022 has shaped up?
“I think it was a great first year. We opened literally a week before our holiday festivities. With a year under our belt, we are receiving excellent feedback from our members. I feel our newly implemented notipping policy was extremely well received. Guests are already repeating visits, and comment scores are really positive.”
“Women need to be involved in their financial plans and have an understanding of where all of their assets are, and what they are used for,” says Certified Financial Planner™ Elizabeth Bennett.
As a woman who has reared a child, been through a divorce and is working toward her own financial future, she forges a relationship with her clients from her own personal experiences.
“You need be in control of your finances and not leave that responsibility to someone else,” she cautions. “Knowing the types of investments that you have, the log-ins for your accounts, and sharing that information with your spouse is very important. Being involved in reviews with your financial advisor and understanding how to access those assets is imperative,” Bennett says.
“Taking responsibility for your financial wellbeing, starting at a young age, is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself. You should take advantage of your employer’s retirement plan, understand what your short-term savings need to look like and what your assets’ tax implications are. Be aware of your spending habits and where all of your money is going, whether you are single or married. As women, we know the value of delegating. My advice is to take one thing off of your plate and reach out to an advisor to get your financial house in order with someone you can trust. I am here for you,” she says.
The Big Chill
Reconnect with your inner calm through The Boca Raton’s wellness and spa amenities.
THERE’S NO BETTER TIME than a new year to reclaim our sense of peace and calm. With a slate of innovative fitness and spa treatments at The Boca Raton, plus a team of dedicated practitioners ready to dispense their golden touch and expertise, the property is looking to reboot our mental wellness. Dive into a nourishing journey for the mind and body this spring and beyond.
Paula Bernstein, director of fitness and wellness, says alleviating stress and anxiety can come in a very accessible form: exercise. As Bernstein explains, no matter a person’s fitness level or restrictions, any form of exercise can be the right remedy for the stresses that accompany today’s complex world. As part of the body’s response to exercise, we release hormones called endorphins that coincide with excitement and euphoria. These “feel-good” hormones are oftentimes what the body needs to help the body respond to tension.
“There can be conditions that cause me stress and anxiety, too,” Bernstein says. “And when I go for my morning workout, those same issues still exist, but my perspective on them is different after I have done my workout. Things feel better. When we feel really worried and anxious, it’s hard to see another perspective, but exercising and allowing your endorphins to be released can be a huge help in controlling and responding to the situation.”
Bernstein has revamped the slate of offerings at Fitness Club, adding a variety of group classes for various fitness levels. They include high-intensity interval training that encourages participants to use maximum energy for certain periods of time, to the more gentle yet effective movements of Tai Chi. Several of the classes are also taught outdoors, including yoga, which coincides with studies that indicate that sunshine can naturally increase serotonin, a hormone that affects your mood in a positive manner. In addition to physical exercise, Bernstein has included more workouts for the mind, like meditation. “Meditation can be great to lower anxiety levels,” Bernstein says. “Being still, changing your mindset, and being at peace with yourself are core concepts of meditation that bring the stress levels down.”
Bernstein has also created opportunities like Ladies’ Night Out, where female members can build a community through shared experiences. These events include a special speaker or group activity (such as personal safety, home organization, personal styling, wellness, and more), which can create a sense of belonging—a key factor in encouraging a positive outlook.
“Here at the Fitness Clubs, we want a positive cycle of getting out and moving, and nourishing your body and mind,” Bernstein says. Exercise isn’t the only proven way to reduce tension. Recent studies have indicated that massages at settings such as The Boca
Raton’s Spa Palmera can significantly decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol—about 31 percent—while increasing levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin (28 percent) and dopamine (31 percent), both of which contribute to feelings of happiness and well-being.
Spa Palmera, the 50,000-square-foot oasis at Cloister, will not only transport members and guests to the majestic kingdom of the Alhambra; it also serves as a sanctuary for stress relief.
Vanessa Carter, the spa director, says the decadent spa is resplendent with massage options that benefit both body and mind. She suggests the Warm Himalayan Gemstone Massage, a 90-minute service that harnesses the power of precious gemstones and aromatherapy, and engages the therapeutic benefits
of heat to align the energy points of the body. The result? A renewed state of balance and well-being.
Carter also suggests the Sound Therapy Massage, which allows the guest to disconnect, relax, and drift into a harmonious and meditative state through the vibrational rhythms of singing bowls for 90 minutes. This sound therapy treatment supports mental clarity and mindfulness, and further aligns the mind with the body, as guests enjoy the beneficial qualities of warm body butter in this deeply relaxing and hydrating massage.
In addition to massages, Spa Palmera is home to the unique Ritual Baths, an ancient practice that has been modernized by The Boca Raton. Spagoers enter a serene indoor bath area with Swiss showers, soaking, deluge, and hot tubs. Carter says one bath in particular, the Mizner Ritual, is just the right prescription to alleviate stress and anxiety. This 90-minute treatment is a restorative bathing ritual rich in CBD-infused properties, which has been known to reduce anxiety and insomnia. The treatment invites guests to relax and unwind inside an oversize tub filled with healing properties of hemp-derived CBD. To enhance overall skin health, soak up the aromatic waters before applying the textured body scrub that is rich in active botanical ingredients. Finish off the treatment with an ice-cold mint facial compress that contrasts the warm waters and instills a deep sense of harmony.
So no matter what stresses ail you, a prescription of exercise and spa treatments at The Boca Raton might be the best remedy to soothe and nourish your body and mind.
We thrive on our patients’ successes and are dedicated to providing the highest level of preventative care every step of the way. Our personalized and transformative therapies are designed to prevent and reverse age-related disease and leave patient’s feeling better than ever.

Cruise Control
The classic Relentless gives members and guests an elegant—and extraordinary—experience
By Nila Do SimonTHE TIMING COULDN’T have been better. As we stepped onboard Relentless, the clouds opened up and there was the sun, primed to send us on our two-hour cruise in shimmery splendor. Perhaps it was divine intervention, but either way, we took it as a sign that today was a good day to embark on an Extraordinary Experience.
So named because of its unparalleled amenities and ensuing memories created, various Extraordinary Experiences can be found at The Boca Raton, including aboard the majestic Relentless, a beautiful vessel that was recently
enhanced with Club Members and guests in mind. Originally designed as a lobster boat, today the 42-foot Wesmac has been given five-star treatment with luxurious finishes, high-end detailing, and state-of-the-art engines and thrusters that encourage a smooth ride.
With the beautiful winter air enveloping us and calm waters ahead, my family and I took an excursion on Relentless toward Hillsboro Lighthouse and then across Lake Boca Raton. With his first step on board the Wesmac, my 4-year-old son already felt like the ship’s captain (apologies to the real
commander of the vessel, Capt. Mollie). It’s true: When you are on a ship as luxurious as Relentless, you do feel different. A sense of well-being and adventure overtakes you (and in this case, your preschool body), and it’s only smooth sailing from there.
As we took off from the Marina promenade, Capt. Mollie headed due south to the Hillsboro Lighthouse through the tranquil waters of the Intracoastal Waterway, navigating us toward the historic beacon that has withstood hurricanes and storms since 1907.
We did as all passengers do when boating along the Intracoastal: We dined,
drank, and of course waved to fellow boaters as we passed each other. The onboard dining options were plentiful and made even more remarkable thanks to a dedicated crew member attending to our needs. The Extraordinary Experience packages (from two to four hours) feature food and drink pairings that not only enhance an expedition, but also make it memorable. Options include oysters and drink pairings; chilled seafood and artisanal cheeses with wines, Champagnes and beers; a picnic
WATER SPORTS
Allow The Boca Raton’s private golden beach to serve as home base for legendary water sports on the Atlantic. At the ready are top-of-the-line equipment, personal service and expert instruction— the only items needed are a swimsuit and a sense of adventure. An array of water sport activities include:
• S norkeling at South Inlet reef via catamaran sailing excursion guided by certified instructors
• Paddleboarding and bodyboarding
• Surfing
• Kayaking and Pedal Kayaking
• Beach catamarans
•Catamaran cruise on a 55-foot vessel
basket of seasonal fruits and vegetables with sandwiches and drinks; and fresh Italianstyled appetizers paired with wines. The gourmet chocolate chip cookies didn’t hurt either, my kids say.
What further separates the Relentless experience from other opportunities are its exceptional comforts and customizable options. The ship’s cabin, which includes a dining table and banquette seating, is fully enclosed and air-conditioned. A daybed is also available near the ship’s galley for any traveler looking to recline. The outdoor deck has a roof with optional side panels to take cover from rain and wind.
Excursions vary from a simple cruise on the Intracoastal to a more active route anchoring at nearby Lake Wyman with water sports such as paddleboarding and snorkeling. A wide swim platform allows for easy access on and off the ship’s stern. The possibilities for adventure are extensive and only limited by one’s imagination.
One could say the options are relentless. To book an Extraordinary Experience on Relentless, call 561/447-3474.
Stephen Day
Resort Pastry Artist
AMINIATURE SWISS VILLAGE with a six-foot-tall tree artfully studded with 1,200 macarons. A spherical chocolate display with 65 pounds of dark, white and milk chocolate. A replica tenor saxophone with a musical staff that seems to gush out from its horn made entirely from chocolate. These fantastical dreamscapes of sugar and butter are conceived not by the likes of dessert designer Willy Wonka, but instead by The Boca Raton’s own Stephen Day, a master pastry artist whose nearly 26-year career on the property has seen countless edible displays that awe, inspire and whet palates.
“I’ve learned to always push the envelope,” Day says of his imaginative designs. “Whatever you did before, just do better. Don’t be afraid to work outside the box.”
These days, Day is adding another impressive element to his already illustrious pastry career. From the confectionery store Maison Rose, Day and his team are creating custom cakes to celebrate an array of occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries, parties, and everything in between. Designed with timeless elegance in mind, these cakes can be ordered directly from Maison Rose by Club members and hotel guests, and will be delivered by Boca By Design. How sweet it is.
Corinne Heyl
General Manager of Tower and Yacht Club
Being a steward of history is not something Corinne Heyl takes lightly. Heyl’s role as the General Manager of both Tower and Yacht Club allows her to be the next caretaker for two storied hotels that have a firm place in South Florida allure.
“I deeply appreciate history, which includes carrying on the legacy of Addison Mizner’s dream. Telling the stories from the past, and sharing our new golden era with generations to come is a privilege I cherish.”
A proven international hospitality leader with a lengthy career managing luxury boutique hotels within the Relais and Châteaux brand, Heyl and her team are focused on imparting a luxurious experience with a personalized touch to guests and Club members. This includes the anticipatory butler service provided to guests. Or creating a memorable fine dining experience at the Yacht Club's private Flybridge restaurant only accessible to members and Yacht Club guests.
“It is an honor to be surrounded by a team who values and embraces true passionate and personalized luxury service, and to be part of not only supporting my team but supporting our journey. It presents a meaningful chance to create incredible experiences.”
Marcell SamuelsRussell
Director of Retail
MARCELL SAMUELS-RUSSELL wants to set the record straight: You are not just “shopping” at the retail spaces at The Boca Raton; instead, the property’s director of retail believes you are here to receive an exceptional experience. “We listen to member and guest stories and really get to know them to understand their needs and comfort levels,” she says. “It’s important that when guests walk out of our shops, we help them leave looking their best.”
In helping to launch the property’s 20 retail concepts, from bespoke fashion to luxury swimwear to timepiece stores, Samuels-Russell brings a career’s worth of highend resort retail background to The Boca Raton. She says offering a personalized experience—including keeping the stores open early or late, and private shopping upon request—can be facilitated. And as she looks toward the future, Samuels-Russell says the best is yet to come, with special designer collaborations and fashion events in store.
“We created these shops for our Club members and guests,” she says. “This is our gift to them.”

LOCAL TENNIS AFICIONADOS know that The Boca Raton has long been the place to go for the finest courts and spectacular tournaments. The first courts at the hotel opened in about 1930 and were southeast of the hotel, north of today’s Harborside Pool Club; they have been relocated many times over the years. The earliest known “pro” was a man named Val Yavorsky. A World War I veteran loyal to the czar, he made his way to the U.S. in 1922 and by 1934 was working as the winter tennis pro at the Boca Raton Club. By the 1960s he moved to Boca Raton full-time, where he taught mechanical drawing, tennis and art at Saint Andrew’s School. (The Historical Society owns some of his artwork.)
Fred Perry, considered by many one of the greatest players of
all time, hailed from Britain, and became a U.S. citizen in 1939. In the 1930s he was ranked the No. 1 amateur in the world for three years; he would win eight Grand Slam tournaments and two Pro Slams, among many other titles. He joined the hotel as tennis pro in the late 1940s. The Boca Raton Historical Society has a photo of Fred with golf pro Tommy Armour and the Duke of Windsor, a frequent visitor to the hotel.
All-around athlete Ted Withall started teaching tennis in Beverly Hills after World War II. He would later serve as president of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and was among the first members to be honored as a master pro. He was also president of the Florida Professional Tennis Association and the first member to be inducted into its Hall of Fame.
remained as pro for 13 years.
The hotel hosted a number of tournaments under Withall’s watch. In 1967, the U.S. Professional Lawn Tennis Association (USPLTA) played there November 21-26. By that time the courts had moved to the north side of the hotel campus. Sam Giammalva took the singles crown and, along with James Morton, the doubles title as well.
In 1972, the inaugural Virginia Slims Championship tournament (now the Women’s Tennis Association tourney) was played on the hotel courts. Seventeen-year-old Fort Lauderdale native Chris “Chrissie” Evert blew the crowd away by defeating Kerry Melville 7-5 and 6-4 to win the singles championship. The Boca
Raton Historical Society has photos of this event, including a photograph of Chrissie using her then-notorious double-handed backhand to return a shot from Billie Jean King, who can be seen on the other side of the net. Evert was unable to claim the prize, however, as she was not yet 18 and was classified as an amateur. Chrissie did return the following year to win the singles title, her first professional win. Evert’s thrilling career helped make women’s tennis the major sporting event it is today. She still resides in Boca Raton.
The 1973 Slims, held in October, was preceded by a procelebrity tournament to draw the crowds. Bobby Riggs, fresh off his defeat by Billie Jean King in the so-called “Battle of the Sexes” match, was the big draw. Other celebrities included such diverse

The Boca Raton Historical Society is a nonprofit founded in 1972 with the mission to collect, preserve and share the history of Boca Raton and act as an advocate for historic preservation in the community. The Society is headquartered in the newly renovated Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum in the historic Boca Raton Town Hall at 71 N. Federal Highway. Its “History Alive!” exhibits feature a complete Boca Raton historic timeline and galleries on the pioneer era, Addison Mizner and the land boom, WWII, and IBM Boca Raton. Galleries for temporary exhibits highlight various topics on local history.
The Boca Raton Historical Society’s programs bring Florida’s history to the community in ways that are both educational and entertaining. In addition to programs for school-age children, the museum is well known for its popular lecture series, Town Hall Talks, and tours of The Boca Raton resort, which it has been giving for almost 50 years. The BRHS research collections serve a wide variety of patrons as the principal archive for information on the history of the area. The museum’s website, bocahistory. org, is one of its most popular assets, providing a variety of resources on local history for students, teachers and the general public. Special events include a popular concert series and the annual Boca Bacchanal, a celebration of wine and food.
The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum is located at 71 N. Federal Highway and is open WednesdaySaturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and free for children under 5. Admission is free to BRHS members. Visit bocahistory. org or call 561/395-6766.
participants as old-time crooner Rudy Vallée and former Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz, plus many television actors. One viewer was less than impressed. His letter to the Boca Raton News claimed the celebrity tournament was “just awful. If it hadn’t been for Bobby Riggs, the matches of the first weekend would have been one great big flop.” In true hotel style, the festivities also included a clambake on the beach, a fashion show, an art show, a philharmonic concert and a boxing match. The hotel continued to host a pro-celebrity tournament for 20 years.
Speaking of Chrissie Evert, her former fiancée Jimmy Connors appeared on the courts during the Corel Champions Tour in April of 1995. Connors co-founded the event, which featured former male champions 35 and older—“the senior citizens” of the tennis world. The event was a sellout for the then Boca Raton Resort & Club. Connors, at the age of 42, won the event handily, collecting
the $40,000 prize. Björn Borg and Evert-ex John Lloyd also competed. Connors also brought the “Jimmy Connors Fantasy Camp” for kids to the courts from 2018-2020.
Tennis continues to be a major draw for The Boca Raton. Longtime current Director of Tennis Erik Silver actually moved to Florida to study under his predecessor, Australian player Warren Woodcock, who joined the staff in 1975. Today, the resort’s 16 high-tech “Hydro-Grid” clay courts (and six pickleball courts) are faster drying, more “forgiving” and 20 degrees cooler than conventional courts—very important in the South Florida heat. The tennis program includes clinics and play for youngsters 3 to 16 years old, including a high-performance academy. Adult clinics are available each week, there are monthly member events, and The Boca Raton can boast that it is one of the top 10 tennis destinations in the country.

ROAD TRIP
PALM BEACH
This dazzling and privileged enclave is just a dreamy drive up A1A from The Boca Raton
BY MARIE SPEEDLORIDA’S ICONIC COASTAL HIGHWAY
A1A offers a scenic cruise up the Atlantic Coast—and nowhere is this drive more stunning than the 28 miles between Boca Raton and Palm Beach. From small towns like Delray Beach and Gulf Stream through the lush canopy of tropical trees leading into Manalapan, the views open up wide after Sloan’s Curve, when a vista of turquoise ocean spans to your right, countered by sprawling oceanfront mansions on your left. You have arrived in Palm Beach, for more than a century the golden dream of Florida. Hovering in a delicate stratosphere of wealth, beauty and well-ordered privilege, it is an island of sweeping ocean-to-lake mansions, soaring razor-edged ficus hedges, Rolls-Royces parked cheek to jowl with Bentleys and Lambos and the obligatory white Range Rovers.
It is the place of Kennedys and Lauders and Phipps, aging actors and titans of Wall Street. A place of myth and history, Gloria Swanson and Joe Kennedy rendezvousing in a Ta-boo bathroom, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor holing up at the Colony, Marjorie Merriweather Post teaching people to square dance in a gilded ballroom.
It is our Newport, our last link to aristocracy and now, even a century after Henry Flagler created it, it is still having its moment. Here are a few ways to experience it on your own.
STROLLING WORTH AVENUE
You’ll know you’ve arrived on Worth Avenue, the island’s iconic shopping street, when you see the stately clock tower on its east end. Turn left, park and discover Worth Avenue, one of the most exclusive shopping districts in the world, and a commercial heartbeat in Palm Beach. Its growth was an indirect offshoot of the private Everglades Club, whose weekly luncheon fashion shows served as a launch pad for designers like Valentino, Blass, Givenchy, Madame Greis and Pauline Trigère—the beginning of Worth Avenue’s rich fashion history.
Much of the three-block-long destination was designed by Addison Mizner, original architect of The Boca Raton, in a distinctive Italianate style, with arched doorways and tumbling bougainvillea. The Avenue continues the tradition of couture as well as art galleries, home furnishings, jewelry stores and more—all in the context of Old World Mediterranean architecture and tropical ambiance. Don’t miss the grave of Johnnie Brown, Mizner’s pet monkey, in Via Mizner, or a chance to explore the charming European courtyards, known as vias, that are tucked in intervals along the street.
THE EXPLORATION OPTIONS
DIY: The Lake Trail
Skirting the western perimeter of the island is the Lake Trail, a major thoroughfare 100 years ago, but today a great bike and walking path that offers an up-close look at Palm Beach. These are your points of interest:
• B egin at the North Bridge. E.R. Bradley’s casino once occupied the corner; all that remains on the site now is a fireplace.
• T he Biltmore once housed exclusive shops near the Beaux Arts Fashion Center complex, which was the shopping center of the day.
• T he houses on Hi-Mount Road, built on what is known as the coral cut, north of Country Club Drive, and the famous iron grate long rumored by children to house a witch.
• T he shingle-styled private home at 549 N. Lake Way was built in 1894 and served as Palm Beach’s first church until 1925 when the Gothic-style Episcopal Church of Bethesdaby-the-Sea opened on South County Road.
• A n 1897 house called “The Vicarage” at 475 N. Lake Way was once home to Bethesda’s vicar and later to the swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
• D uck’s Nest (561 N. Lake Way), built in 1891, was thought to have been assembled in two parts and shipped by barge from New York.
• A ll that is left at the northernmost end of the island is a broad dock, once home to Annie’s Tackle Shop and Dock, torn down in the early 1980s, a mainstay for boaters and residents alike.
Limo Tours
Take a walking, driving or biking tour of the island with your own private guide through Leslie Diver’s Island Living
Tours (561/868-7944; islandlivingpb.com). Driving tours range from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours and include a walk through the vias on Worth Avenue. Biking tours (bikes not included—you can rent them at the Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop) are 90 minutes each, and are a great way to ogle the Island’s grand landmarked estates designed by the “Fab Four” of esteemed Palm Beach architects: Addison Mizner, Marion Sims Wyeth, John Volk and Maurice Fatio.
Walking Tour
Every Wednesday between December and April, the Worth Avenue Association presents hour-long walking tours of the Avenue with historian Rick Rose. These lively tours explore the origins and character of Worth Avenue, its unique architecture, the historical significance of many of its legendary landmarks and some of its famous residents. For more details, call the Worth Avenue Association at 561/655-6909.
LANDMARK HOUSES IN PALM BEACH
1Arguably the most famous house in Palm Beach aside from the Flagler Museum is Mar-a-Lago, built in 1924-1927 and originally owned by socialite and heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post (and later, “winter White House” of former President Donald Trump), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property was once an epicenter of early Palm Beach’s social season. 1100 S. Ocean Blvd.
The “ham-and-cheese house,” nicknamed for its alternating bands of red brick and coral keystone, was originally called Casa Eleda and was built in 1928. It was designed by Maurice Fatio, the architect to Rockefellers and Vanderbilts, whose opulent homes inspired Cole Porter to say, “I want to live on Maurice Fatio’s patio.” 920 S. Ocean Blvd.
The “John Lennon house” was bought by Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1980. Its proper name is El Solano, and it was built in 1919 and designed by society architect Addison Mizner. Both Mizner and Harold K. Vanderbilt lived in the house at different times, but Lennon and Ono bought the house from socialite Brownie McLean, who had famously (and unwittingly) rented the estate at one time to Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine. Yoko Ono sold the house in 1986. 720 S. Ocean Blvd.
4The former Kennedy family estate in Palm Beach, Florida, was once a Winter White House and family compound and, later, the setting for the infamous Kennedy rape trial in the 1990s. The house has 200 feet of ocean frontage and was built in the 1920s. Joseph P. Kennedy bought the estate in 1941, and John F. Kennedy is said to have written his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Profiles in Courage, at the house while recovering from back surgery in 1956. In 1963, the president spent the weekend there before heading to Dallas, where he was assassinated. The Kennedy family sold the property in 1995. 1095 N. Ocean Drive
5The Duck’s Nest, built in 1891, is the second oldest house in Palm Beach. The architecture reflects the island’s first houses, from the gabled roofs to the expansive front porch. According to the Palm Beach Daily News, the “house got its name from the ducks that roosted on what was once an extensive freshwater marsh on the east side of the house.” The News says the house was expanded “over the years—including additions by society architects Marion Sims Wyeth and John L. Volk” and won a prestigious award from the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach for a recent renovation effort. 303 Maddock Way

THE PERFECT PRESCRIPTION
For these two medical students, a wedding at The Boca Raton is just what the (future) doctors ordered
BY NILA DO SIMON PHOTOS BY SHEA CHRISTINE PHOTOGRAPHYTURNS OUT, FATHER DOES KNOW BEST. Before Katherine Nabel left to pursue her MD-PhD degree in 2017, her father, Gary, gave her one last thought. “He said to me, ‘The most important thing you do over the course of your 20s is not studying to be a doctor or learning medicine; it’s going to be finding your life partner.’” And within three weeks of starting her studies at Harvard University, it happened: She found the love of her life in Richard Smith, a secondyear medical student.
Speaking today from their Brookline, Massachusetts, home, Katherine recalls how Richard was everything she was not looking for. “I actually had always said that I had never wanted to be with a doctor,” she says, laughing. “Everyone in my family is in medicine, and I was hopeful for a diversity of conversation at the dinner table. I distinctly remember starting medical school and trying to not date anyone in medical school.”
As fortune would have it, the two became an instant match, both sharing a desire to devote their professional careers to caring for others, not to mention a profound love of dogs, including their own two, Charlie and Cooper.
After getting engaged in 2020, the pair knew deciding where their wedding would take place would come down to a sense of complete satisfaction and comfort for the various activities they had in mind. They considered several locations, including Richard’s native England, but felt an overwhelming connection when visiting The Boca Raton.
“It had everything we were looking for,” Katherine says. “The Boca Raton is so beautiful, with so many different venues where we could host our events. Plus, there’s golf, tennis and the ocean all right here. The food was really important to us, and we knew how impressive the dining options were here. The Boca Raton really ticked off so many details that we desired.”
The pair began their wedding weekend in April with a rehearsal dinner at The Flamingo Grill, where they hosted close family, friends, and the bridal party on the restaurant’s covered veranda. Overlooking the championship golf course as the sun was setting, the dinner was the beginning of a magical weekend for Katherine, Richard and their wedding guests. “It was stunning,” Katherine says. “The Flamingo Grill team paid so much attention to us, leading up to the dinner and during it. And the food and wine were absolutely phenomenal.”
Throughout the entire wedding planning process, their guests’ enjoyment became a leading decision in having their wedding at The Boca Raton. With 200 acres of pristine landscape to enjoy and explore, the couple felt the property allowed for a varied amount of activities—all in one location. That included hosting guests for welcome drinks at Beach Club’s ballroom, Dunes, where their loved ones were treated to special touches like sundae, taco and sushi bars.
For the ceremony itself, the couple had dreamed about having an outdoor wedding, and they couldn’t have imagined a more picturesque spot than at the Harborside Lawn. The romantic, intimate and elegant ceremony featured a Florida-chic design, complete with pops of citrus colors that brought elements of joy and energy to the evening. The setting provided an ideal backdrop for the two to share their handwritten vows, a moment that Richard says he’ll never forget.
“It was just a very special moment between the two of us,” he says. “Even though we were surrounded by so many people, it felt like it was just the two of us sharing our feelings with each other.”
After the two said their “I Dos,” the wedding of nearly 170 guests enjoyed cocktail hour at Palm Court, which Katherine says “was the coolest place ever to have a cocktail hour,” a space that allowed guests to meander outdoors to take photographs or stay inside a luxurious Art Deco-inspired room. Palm Court even created signature drinks named after the newlywed’s two dogs (and ring bearers), along with an array of passed hors d’oeuvres that included Hawaiian tuna poke, Maine lobster salad, seared beef tenderloin with cipollini and manchego, mushroom profiterole with Parmesan and truffle, sea salt-roasted asparagus, and a seafood station with local catches.
Dinner was held at the Cathedral ballroom, where guests dined on their choice of sea bass with an orange glaze or filet with truffle sauce. In addition to the five-tier cake created by The Boca Raton, guests enjoyed an array of Florida-esque decadent sweets, including Key lime tarts. And the party kept going, with an after-party filled with mini burgers, French fries and chicken nuggets.
After a good night’s rest as newlyweds, Katherine and Richard woke up to continue the celebration with their friends and family at a Sunday brunch. The Cathedral transformed from a vibrant after-party stage to an elegant brunch room, complete with “every type of breakfast food under the sun—plus a mimosa bar,” Katherine says.
In the end, Katherine and Richard’s wedding at The Boca Raton turned out to be the perfect destination wedding for their New England and English relatives. “Overall, we felt that the people who were coming would really feel that it was special,” Katherine says. “And looking back, it truly was special.”

Dan Lichtenberger Broker Victor Longo Broker AssociateFirst Action Realty, Inc. sets itself apart from the pack by operating as a boutique brokerage firm. Dan Lichtenberger and Victor Longo have been providing a bespoke service experience to clients for more than 20 years.
“Service is the key to success in the real estate business, and our brokerage is more personalized than most,” said Lichtenberger.
“You are going to get our expert opinion, and we are going to work closely with you throughout the entire process. We are very in tune with the market and have worked with clients seeking every kind of real estate, from a small condo to a private country club community to a luxurious waterfront mansion. With our own personal background in buying, renovating and reselling homes, we are extremely familiar with what clients look for in a home and what is involved in realizing and exceeding their expectations. Real estate is not only typically our most important and valued asset, but also a great vehicle to establish and grow wealth,” Lichtenberger explained.
“One of the main keys to a successful transaction is negotiating price. What will it cost? How much will I get? When working with First Action Realty, the answer is: more! We’ll negotiate our listing commission as low as 1% and provide a credit to buyers at every closing!
“We’re a little different from most. We answer the phone, give individualized attention and pride ourselves on timeliness. I’d hate to say we’re never late, but … we’re never late,” he boasts.

As an award-winning authority on waterfront luxury real estate for more than 20 years, Bonnie Heatzig has mastered an ultra-specialized niche working with high-net-worth clients.
“My profession fosters high expectations for performance and results at every turn. The competition is fierce, and there is no margin for forgiveness with a very demanding clientele,” says the turbo-charged powerhouse. “That’s where I step in, and that is where I shine.”
At Douglas Elliman, Heatzig shines brightly among the highest ranked agents nationwide. Being a licensed Florida attorney also gives her clients the edge in negotiations and drafting solutions to make sure they win the bid. “My clients have 100-percent confidence in my integrity and ability to get the deal done at the highest standard,” she says.
As the lead sales director at Boca Beach Residences and executive director of luxury sales at Douglas Elliman, Heatzig started giving guided tours of waterfront properties by boat to provide an open-air, safe environment for her clients and to keep up with the demand during COVID. Since selling out Boca Beach Residences, Heatzig continues to roll out the highest echelon of services, giving her clients the most informative tours of luxury waterfront homes, sharing the inside track on different waterfront neighborhoods and luxury condominiums, and showing them firsthand comparisons for eager buyers looking to own a piece of paradise from Miami to Palm Beach.
Thinking outside the marketing box to demonstrate her standout knowledge base, combined with her white-glove treatment on land and sea, has proven to be Heatzig’s gateway to client loyalty and referrals.

Jonathan Postma had an early appreciation for the finer things in life, growing up with a family in the yacht industry. His own business mind, cultivated at George Washington University, led him to the residential real estate profession with the reality that not everyone needs a yacht, but everyone needs a place to call home.
“I have set up a team at Coldwell Banker to accommodate any kind of client regardless of their needs, from condos to waterfront mansions, though luxury resort/ waterfront properties are my forte,” says Postma, whose office is strategically located at The Boca Raton. “If you drew a 10-mile radius circle around the resort, I handle all of those properties, including golf communities and oceanfront, however my team covers everything from Palm Beach to South Beach,” he explains.
“My clients know that I am ‘in the know’ whether providing information about the best restaurants, club memberships and the best school districts for their kids to attend. I have clients that I have sold over a dozen homes to, whether upsizing, downsizing, or adding vacation homes to their portfolios. I enjoy the repeat business and the trust my clients have in me. Anyone can sell you a home. I make it a point to be an authority on placing personalities with lifestyles,” Postma says. “I find out what makes the client tick and I match them with a home that suits their needs and dreams.”
