The Boca Raton— through its people IT WAS APPARENT as soon as I met him. In my first encounter with Chef Takao Soejima, I noted his deft skills, calm demeanor, and precision to his craft. In Chef Soejima’s 15-year career here at The Boca Raton, he has become a well-respected ambassador for Japanese cuisine. From being hand-picked to work alongside Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto to now helming our own Japanese Bocce Club, Soejima has made the Far East feel just a bit closer through his sushi creations and other Japanese classics. In this issue, we wanted to present the story behind a few of our amazing chefs, including Soejima, Chef Adam Pile of Principessa Ristorante, and Chef Christopher Morain of The Flamingo Grill. They each have compelling backgrounds that led

them to The Boca Raton, and are passionate about why it’s meaningful to serve the most important guest: you. The next day, Altrui and her team came out to rescue the all-important bees, whose number topped out at around 500 pollinators, including the queen. “We knew Roxanne would be the right person to call,” Roenbeck says. “Her understanding of the importance of bees to our food production and her tender care to ensure their survival is exactly the type of partner we look for at The Boca Raton.” Altrui, whose BeeMade Honey exclusively produces honey for the property, couldn’t have been happier to save the bees and bring them safely home to her Palm City farm— to buzz another day.

An exciting new chapter of Beach Club is on the horizon. A transformation will begin this spring, with plans to be unveiled in festive season 2024. Upon reopening, Club members and guests will discover a one-of-a-kind beachfront experience that reflects the evolving tastes and expectations of the contemporary, luxury traveler. The full-scale property makeover— from guest rooms and suites to dining concepts to beach and pool upgrades and outdoor event space—is set to appeal to curiosity seekers. “We took a hard look at the beach and pool experience and asked ourselves, ‘How do we elevate that?’” says

Daniel H. Hostettler, president and CEO of The Boca Raton. “We decided that we want to provide a more experiential setting at Beach Club where activities around the beach and dining are refined while being authentic and unprescribed.” Taking the lead from The Boca Raton’s first phase of renovation, which included a remake of Harborside, Beach Club’s refresh will continue elevating Club member and guest experiences. Soothing interior designs will reflect a chic beachside respite in all areas, including the guest rooms and Beach Club lounge, all focusing on a coastal, sophisticated feel that showcases open, lightfilled spaces, vibrant details, and natural materials and textures. The ever-popular Marisol restaurant will expand from its al fresco-only location to a new indoor-outdoor space. In addition, a seasonal restaurant will feature a rotating Latin-inspired menu. “Our goal with Beach Club is to create an environment that’s engaging throughout the day,” Hostettler says. “It’s our opportunity to present an eternal summer, highlighting the beauty of unscripted details amplified by the warmth of the ocean breeze and sun.”

LAUGH OUT LOUD National touring comedian Jimmy Shubert’s impressive resume includes three major motion pictures in the past year, as well as an album that went to No. 1 on the iTunes comedy charts. On tap for special appearances at The Boca Raton, Shubert describes his performances and offers a peek into the future. How does stand-up comedy inspire people?

“I love making people laugh. I can’t tell you how many people come up to me and just grab my arm and say, ‘I just needed that, I haven’t laughed like that in a long time.’ I never take that for granted, ever. You don’t know what people are going through—maybe a kid lost his aunt, who was like his mom, and is depressed—and they come up to me and say, ‘You had me laughing, and you had me forget about things.’” What about comedy resonates with people?

“When people are laughing, they get away from the things that make them sad. There’s a real power to this. It’s cathartic for some people. It is my superpower.” You’ve performed previously at MB Supper Club. How is the setting conducive to your superpower?

“I like that room because it’s intimate. Comedy is an intimate art form, but what I love about it is that it’s just you and the audience, and I like to talk to people in the audience.”

It was a chance to explore new horizons, one that left a lasting impression on members of The Boca Raton Club. Sailing on the late fall seas, members took to the Caribbean waters for The Boca Raton President’s Cruise. The seven-day journey marked the inaugural voyage of Explora I cruise ship that featured sophisticated delights across 18 food and beverage venues, wellness programs, and curated service from a team of hospitality experts—not to mention a lifetime of memories and personal connections. Setting sail from Miami’s port of call, members were welcomed by President & CEO Daniel H. Hostettler, who toasted the debut cruise experience as the first of many to come. Alongside partner Explora Journeys, a new brand that is fast becoming known for transformative luxury ocean travel, guests had their choice of oceanfront suites, penthouses, and residences designed to emulate European elegance. OMEONE ONCE TOLD ME that “changing your perspective changes your experience.” If that’s the case, then consider my travel experience fully morphed after a stay at the Tower Suite Collection. Nestled among the clouds, the Tower Suite Collection ranges from spacious one-bedroom suites to signature suites on the 23rd through 26th floors of Tower, the 27-story building whose soft pink façade has defined Boca Raton’s skyline for decades.

It was the view that overtook us initially. A stay in our suite allowed our family’s entrance to Top of the Tower, a private lounge on the top floor limited to Tower Suite Collection guests. Stepping off the elevator and walking into the exclusive Top of the Tower, we let out a collective “Wow,” when we saw the vista: sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean’s turquoise blue waters and Florida scenic coastline to our east, and a picturesque undulating 18-hole golf course to our west. To see the same ocean I grew up swimming in— one I have visited countless times and have since introduced my own children to—from this new, elevated vantage point was a feast for my eyes. “It truly is special here,” said Samantha Seetaram, director of Tower Suite Collection, as she warmly greeted us upon arrival. “There’s no other place in the area where you can experience this view.” And she’s right: Tower is the tallest building in the city, and it’s a special feeling taking in the unobstructed sights from the highest floor that Boca Raton has to offer. If the views at the 27th floor lounge are a visual feast, then consider the other amenities

at Top of the Tower. Originally opened as a restaurant decades ago, today Top of the Tower has been reimagined as more of an experience than a sole dining outlet. During the day from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, an array of complimentary beverage and culinary items highlighting global cuisine awaited our family at self-serve stations. These included complimentary breakfast and light bites, but the complimentary hors d’oeuvres (and there is an additional a la carte option) created by Chef Mirella Flores and her culinary team were a special treat, with a rotating

menu that included dumplings, Mediterranean-inspired salads, and Central American delights. Chef Mirella herself is a Peruvian native who brings international flair and exciting flavors to the evolving options. My husband and I appreciated the curated Moët & Chandon beverage menu that, coupled with personal service from a dedicated butler and concierge team, paired beautifully with the large selection of wine, Champagne, and cocktails. In addition, Top of the Tower allows guests to access curated private programming, like British High Tea,

ARRIE RUBIN WAKES UP each morning with a dream to help her community. It’s a feeling that she’s been actively working toward since she was a young girl, ignited by the attention that her parents, Marvin and Sandra, gave to their community. And if her past and current work are any indication of Rubin’s focus, then the decades-long member of The Boca Raton Club is getting closer and closer to achieving her goals of community stewardship. As chair of the most recent Go Pink Luncheon to benefit Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Rubin and fellow philanthropists raised more than $2 million with a crowd of more than 1,300 attendees at The Boca Raton. The hospital holds a soft spot for Rubin, who was appointed to the board of trustees of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation in 2017 and then to the hospital board in 2020. In addition to her work with the hospital, Rubin has been a longtime supporter of Impact 100, which engages fellow female community members in philanthropy, the George Snow Scholarship Fund, the Fuller Center, and other youth-focused nonprofits. “I work with some really passionate and heartfelt people,” Rubin says. In fact, personal connections have directly come from within The Boca Raton. The day after the 2023 Go Pink Luncheon, Rubin was at Harborside Fitness Club speaking with a fellow club member about the next Go Pink Luncheon she will be chairing again this year—and the member agreed to come on board for 2024. Turns out, dreams do come true.

OU COULD SAY Dr. Patricio Espinosa was born dancing. Growing up in Ecuador, Espinosa says rhythm came naturally to him. But ballroom dancing? That was a completely foreign discipline for Espinosa. The well-respected neurologist took a leap of faith and agreed to dance in last year’s Boca Ballroom Battle, a fundraising competition that brings eight community leaders together to raise money for the George Snow Scholarship Fund. The neurologist and founder of the Espinosa Neuroscience Institute says no amount of rhythm could have prepared him for ballroom dancing. “You have to

learn the steps and the choreography for a performance that’s two minutes and 30 seconds long,” he says. “It’s not the type of dancing I grew up with!” After six months of training, and multiple lessons and classes, Espinosa was crowned the 2023 Ballroom Battle fundraising champion with professional partner Sayra Vazquez in front of a crowd of supporters in the grand ballroom at The Boca Raton. The eight community dancers even set a record amount of funds raised: $1.2 million. “Even though I knew nothing about ballroom dancing, I knew it was going to help other people, especially those in need,” he says.

Known for her go-getter attitude as recognized by both members and colleagues, Hall’s dedication and commitment to excellence culminated with a promotion to manager of The Club’s Team Tango Member Relations group. Green’s equally impressive trajectory propelled her to graduate from Florida International University and receive certification in hospitality and tourism from Florida Atlantic University. She joined the Club in 2013 as a member services coordinator and is now on the Member Relations Leadership Team. OMETIMES TO MOVE FORWARD, it’s important to recognize the power of the past. That’s why Spa Palmera is turning to ancient healing practices to help restore one’s balance and harmony. This season, Spa Palmera introduces its Wellness Collection, a series of services that bring a holistic, healing practice into our modern lives. Inside the 50,000-square-foot spa that has recently received Five Stars by Forbes Travel Guide, the Spa Palmera team is debuting a selection of therapies meant to complement its award-winning services that include Natura Bissé facials and ritual baths. “We want to make 2024 more about bodymind-energy flow and elevating the well-being component,” says Tatiana Reginello, Senior Spa Operations Manager.

The Wellness Collection at Spa Palmera complements its serene motif by bringing holistic healing practices into our lives.

One of the most exciting new services is the sound vibration therapy. Guests are invited to tap into the power of tonal frequencies and vibrations to allow the body to align on a cellular level. Research has shown that sound frequencies can slow down brain waves to a deeply restorative state, which activates the body’s self-healing. Credited as a practice introduced by the Australian Aboriginals 40,000 years ago, today’s version at Spa Palmera is available in 60- and 90-minute programs with a dedicated therapist leading the service. Once inside the quiet, dimly lit therapy room, guests are invited to relax among Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and chimes. They are also given their choice of chakra stones to hold, which have been said to help heal and restore balance. All together, sound vibrational therapy is known to release cell blockage, opening energy flow for a

healthy alignment. “This service is perfect for anybody who is always on the go and needs a little rebalance in their lives, or looking to do something different,” says Reginello. Other new services include Reiki and Palmera reflexology, two practices that allow guests to check their energy levels to ensure their flow is positive and nourishing. With Reiki, the therapists will place their hands either lightly on the guest or slightly above the guest to introduce the flow of healthy energy through the body to reduce stress and promote healing. Developed in the early 1900s in Japan, Reiki has been known to elicit a sense of calm and reduce stress. Similarly, the Palmera reflexology treatment is a rejuvenating treatment that allows the guest to experience healing while being pampered. It begins with a Himalayan salt scrub that’s followed by warm paraffin on the feet. The therapist focuses on specific points on the feet that are said to correlate with certain areas of the body. For example, the center of the foot is associated with the kidney, and the

arch of the foot is connected to the pancreas. A goal is to release any energy blocks, as well as nourish the skin. Also debuting this season are the Abhyanga and Shirodhara massages. Considered ayurvedic systems that are rooted in India’s deep history, both treatments use the power of soothing essential oils to relax the body and mind. That, coupled with a rhythmic massage, is known to bring harmony and balance to the guest. “These treatments help align the flow of energy with their very rhythmic, long strokes,” Reginello says. “In addition, the oils have the ability to soothe, energize, or calm, allowing for a better flow of energy.” The final addition to the Wellness Collection menu is the Gemstone Awakening Massage, which uses warm volcanic stones and cool lapis lazuli stones to target pressure points with deep therapeutic work. The contrast therapy with hot and cold can help improve blood circulation, as well as energize the mind and body. With the new slate of wellness treatments, Reginello suggests taking turns with each service to see which ones best align with the guest’s needs at the moment. “Each service will address everybody’s needs in some way, and we’re excited for our members and guests to try them.”

Chef Takao Soejima

TAK AO SOEJIMA, CHEF DE CUISINE AT JAPANESE BOCCE CLUB

It all started because of a friend of a friend. Chef Takao Soejima was a newly minted high school graduate in Japan when his father’s small business fell on hard times and Soejima needed to quickly earn a living. With a desire to see the world, Soejima asked his father’s friend if he knew of anyone who could hire him to work in the United States. Turns out, there was a friend of a friend who needed help at a restaurant across the globe in Jupiter, Florida. “I just jumped on the plane, and I came to Florida,” Soejima says. During the day, Soejima performed a range of work at the restaurant—washing dishes, prepping food, busing tables, and more—and at night, he went to school to learn English. After a few years at the Jupiter restaurant, Soejima became a sushi chef in 1989, a profession he had admired since he was a young boy in Japan. “I’ve always loved sushi,” he says. “After school, my friends would want to go to get a burger, but I just wanted a sushi roll. I just wanted to eat a cucumber roll.” A part of The Boca Raton since 2008, Soejima is regarded as one of the country’s finest sushi chefs, with more than 34 years of sushi-making experience in both traditional Japanese sushi and modern American-style sushi.

Biggest mentor: “Chef Masaharu Morimoto, the famous Iron Chef. His Philadelphia restaurant had an opening in 2003, and I sent in my resume. Morimoto called me up and asked me to work there. From there, I worked alongside Morimoto for the next 17 years.” Signature dishes at Japanese Bocce Club: “There are so many good dishes from the hot kitchen, but my biggest culinary passion is sushi. I recommend the Chef Selection, which comes with a chef choice of signature maki and assorted nigiri.” The secret sauce at Japanese Bocce Club: “Fresh fish is flown in from Japan twice a week, and our property also works with local fishermen who supply us with local fresh fish.” Most thankful for: “Our team, including our sous chefs and support staff who assist me and the restaurant. Without them, I can’t run this restaurant. They produce a lot of quality menu items from the hot kitchen, which allows me to focus on the sushi.”

ADAM PILE, CHEF DE CUISINE AT PRINCIPESSA RISTORANTE

Although much changed during The Boca Raton’s recent transformations, one thing that has remained constant is Chef Adam Pile’s storied tenure at the property’s restaurants. The 20-year culinary veteran at The Boca Raton has held positions within the property’s most distinct restaurants, including 27 Blue, the original restaurant at Top of the Tower. Today, Pile brings not just his culinary know-how as chef de cuisine at Principessa Ristorante, but also his deep appreciation of the property’s evolution. “It’s been great seeing where the resort is going and where the restaurants are going,” Pile says. “In my 20 years, there has been a lot of change—restaurants are modern and up to date—but there still is a classic touch and attention to service detail that hasn’t changed.” Biggest motivation: “Both the culinary team and the diners. We have a lot of new, creative members in the kitchen, and it’s exciting to see the new things they are doing. At the same time, it’s nice to develop relationships with members and guests. There are some families with kids I have known

since when they were tiny, and now they are going to college.” Earliest culinary mentor: “Both my grandmas are excellent cooks. As a kid, I was constantly in the kitchen, and seeing them cook was always inspiring.” Notable inspirations: “Ingredients inspire me. We have some great relationships with local farms, like Swank Farms. I just received some absolutely amazing tomatoes from Jodi Swank; what do you need to do to it? Not much. You start with great ingredients, and try not to screw them up.” Future focus: “We recently started serving brunch at Principessa Ristorante. The service is on Sundays, and offers an elevated brunch option, like a tower of exotic fruits, tiramisu-stuffed French toast, and carbonara-stuffed pizza.”

Florida-born Christopher Morain says the flavors of the Sunshine State run deep in his veins. That belief has made him the ideal representative at The Flamingo Grill, the midcentury American steakhouse that leans into Florida’s bright tastes. Since arriving at The Boca Raton in 2021, Morain has pushed the restaurant forward, providing what he calls “superb quality in a luxurious but approachable way.” It’s a standard that has served him well throughout his career, one that has even brought on praise from Emeril Lagasse, who, after tasting one of Morain’s dishes, insisted on coming back into the kitchen to say “my compliments to the chef.”

I get so excited and get stuck on one page for two weeks, and then during that time, I find another book that I love and want to read, so I can never get through one book. I just love those books, though. They are so simple that they’re beautiful.” Origin story of a dish: “At The Flamingo Grill, we want to respect the history of cuisine in America, and preserve it. One of the best examples of that is a newer dish on the menu. I travel to New Orleans quite a bit and love the city’s connection with food, and now there’s a spicy gumbo dish with blue crab and andouille sausage with rice on The Flamingo Grill menu.” Future focus: “Chef Will Cox, the executive chef of signature restaurants, and I are really trying to push the quality here, making it approachable yet luxurious. We’ve started to see the true potential of this place, and we have the right recipe of the team and executives who are supporting us.”

EW MODERN RESIDENTS of Boca Raton today have heard of Clarence Geist. But Geist, the second owner of what is today The Boca Raton, is in many ways a true hero— not only to the hotel but to the entire city of Boca Raton. Clarence H. Geist was born in 1866 on a farm in LaPorte, Indiana. After education at a “normal school” (teacher’s college), he made a living selling horses. He returned to Chicago to work for the Rock Island Railroad, entered the real estate market, and eventually joined Rufus and Charles G. Dawes in the development of a gas and electric utilities company. (Charles Dawes was to serve as vice president in the late 1920s, and the Dawes brothers took over the management of the Mizner Development Corporation in mid1926.) Geist married Florence Hewitt, and in 1905 they moved to Philadelphia and Geist began investing in utilities, gaining control of the Philadelphia Suburban Water Company. It was his association with the water supply that earned him the nickname “Waterboy.” Geist had become a snowbird in Palm Beach in the early 1920s. He built a beautiful house, La Claridad, on Golf View Road designed by Marion Syms Wyeth, the original architect of Mar-a-Lago. One of the legends about Geist is that he built the Boca Raton Club because he had been blackballed from the Everglades Club due to his uncouth behavior. This is not true—he was a member of that august body and many others as well. He also became an investor in the Mizner Development Corporation’s “Boca Raton” project. By spring of 1927, the Mizner Development Corporation was deeply in debt, yet another victim of the collapse of the Florida Land Boom. After several rounds of bidding, Geist’s agent, New York attorney Jerome Gedney, offered $71,500 for the 16,000-acre holdings of the MDC, including the Cloister Inn, Administration Buildings, Floresta and Spanish Village houses, and miles of oceanfront. He also accrued millions of dollars in debt. Geist’s principal interest was golf. He was an avid golfer who owned the Seaview Golf

Club near Atlantic City, which is still in business. Geist had long considered establishing a winter club like his summer club in New Jersey. The Cloister Inn, with its three courses, seemed like an ideal investment, but first, the 100-room inn needed to be expanded. Geist hired New York architects Schultze and Weaver, already famous for the Biltmore in Coral Gables, the Roney Plaza in Miami Beach, and the Miami News Building (Freedom Tower) in Miami. They also designed the current Breakers in Palm Beach and would go on to create the Art Deco masterpiece the Waldorf Astoria in New York. In 1928, the architects drew up a plan for a 300-room addition featuring a six-story building surrounding a square entrance courtyard. This would triple the size of the Cloister Inn but incorporate it into the new plans. Schultze and Weaver planned the new hotel with respect to Mizner’s original design.

There are several features in the “addition” that mimic those in the Cloister Inn. Construction began late in 1928 and took all of 1929. The new hotel had a much fancier entrance—the facade now faced south instead of west. Camino Real was completed to the Intracoastal, and a roundabout with a fountain in its center enlivened the entrance drive. The Club retained Mizner’s public rooms, but the original Mizner Dining Room was turned into a lounge and replaced with the new lakeside Cathedral Dining Room. Jacques Greber was the landscape designer; he oversaw a new fountain with the “Boca Raton lady” (actually Salome) by sculptor Ettore Pellegatta at the center of the courtyard. The second courtyard, within the rectangle of Mizner’s original inn, was also renovated, and a beautiful charbagh-style garden with water running in troughs into the Mizner loggia replaced what had been sand and palm trees.

“Art dealer” Ohan Berberyan and Paul Chaflin, who had been Miami’s Vizcaya decorator, were hired as interior designers. They used the Spanish antiques and Mizner Industries items already in place but added to the furnishing of the club, making it more luxurious and comfortable in contrast to the stark “cloister” feel of the original hotel. Geist hired famed golf course architects Toomey and Flynn to design a new course on the south side of Camino Real—where Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club is today. At the beginning of the Great Depression, Geist stated that he had faith “in Florida and its future. As long as the Florida sunshine continues to shine, people will come to Florida.” He also predicted that his new club would become a “sportsman’s paradise.” One of the new features was a beautiful saltwater pool that stood where the new Harborside Pool Club is today. It was known as

the “Garden Pool.” There was also an indoor pool, like the swank hotels of old. It was not at all popular; why would you want to swim inside when you had the glorious Florida climate outside? Eventually, Palm Beach architect Maurice Fatio was commissioned to convert the pool into an auditorium. Today it is the Valencia event room. In addition, the hotel’s beachfront access was at the “Cabana Club,” on the beach south of the Boca Raton Inlet at Bahia Cabana, where the Addison condos stand today. There were initially 200 cabanas and a saltwater pool and casual dining under the moonlight. It was replaced by the Beach Club in about 1980. The new hotel opened unofficially at Christmas, 1929, but formally on January 7, 1930. Although the Club operated as a hotel, it did require membership. Originally, 700 members paid $5,000 for their membership and received 50 shares of stock in Geist’s new Spanish River Land Company. After that, members paid $100 a year to retain their memberships. Club members would enjoy all of the amenities of the lavish new hotel, including tennis courts, golf, lots of swimming, and horseback riding. There are several legends about Geist that are likely untrue or at least questionable. Most seem to have originated with Boca Raton novelist Theodore Pratt, who published a booklet dubbed “The Story of Boca Raton” in 1953. This was written shortly after Alva Johnston published the amusing but apocryphal account of the Mizner brothers available in the book The Legendary Mizners. Pratt claimed Geist, known for his coarseness, was a “big, barrel-bodied, loud-voiced fellow who didn’t care what he said to anybody.” He would stride around the lobby in his bathrobe after coming off the golf course and preempt anyone waiting on the elevator to be taken to his sixth-floor suite. The nightly movies could not start until he arrived, and he never bothered about the time (possibly true). Geist was allegedly in great fear of being kidnapped. To prevent this, he supposedly kept two armed guards with him at all times and ordered the staff fingerprinted to learn of any past crimes. There may be a grain of truth in some of this; it became popular after his death to “Geist-bash” amongst the locals. To his family, he was the opposite of a

boor—polite, considerate, and kind. He could certainly be high-handed. The Boca Raton Historical Society contains a copy of a long speech he apparently gave to the city commissioners and others in 1929. In it, he admonished the citizens to behave themselves; one can only guess how the locals reacted. Here are some excerpts: There are just two pests we have to contend with in Boca Raton. The first is politics… The only ones in the town that should draw any salary should be the Town Clerk that keeps the books, the man who runs the Waterworks, and the Policeman. The second greatest pest you have to deal with in this community is the mosquito. … If the people will get together … and persuade them to bury

their tin cans and keep their rain barrels covered, and if the whole community will be inclined to watch the mosquito situation, I see no reason why this community should not be well rid of mosquitoes. If they don’t do this, you are never going to make any money out of your town, because people are not going to come down here and be pestered with mosquitoes...I am anxious to have a town built here that everyone will be proud of...I don’t want to run your political situation here one minute. I want you to run it yourselves, but if I go ahead and build a splendid community of houses and homes, it is going to be necessary for the people who live here to cooperate with me... My coming to Boca Raton does not mean that I came here to take anything away, because there is

nothing here to take away. The sun, the ocean, and the climate is something no one can take away from this Town. … But don’t forget to get rid of the mosquito. Geist’s Boca Raton Club manager was a man named Gordon Anderson. City records show the close relationship between the Club, Clarence Geist, and the city at the time. The Club was prepared to direct the town’s actions and even spend the town’s money on projects important to its maintenance. Most local citizens seemed to have accepted this patronage, since it benefited them most.

BR IDGES

The first bridge over the Boca Raton Inlet was a fixed bridge, which spanned east-west south of the current span. Mizner planned to replace this span to allow access from the ocean to his new hotel; this did not happen before his project went bankrupt in 1927. In December 1929, with the opening of the new Club at hand, Geist’s Spanish River Land Company added a draw to the bridge and raised it to accommodate boat traffic. In addition, Geist also had a swing bridge, originally from Deerfield Beach, moved into place at the Intracoastal, now the Camino Real bridge. It was a turn bridge, which operated on a pivot. This bridge was eventually replaced with the current bascule span in 1938.

FLORIDA EAST COAST RAILWAY STATION

Boca Raton’s only railroad station at the time of Geist’s arrival was a wooden freight depot located on the east side of the tracks just north of Palmetto Park Road. This was clearly inadequate for the patrons of the swanky new hotel. Allegedly Geist purchased $200,000 in F.E.C. stock in order to finance the construction of a new passenger station here. In 1929, the railway began construction on a beautiful new station designed by architect Chester Henninger, smack dab in the middle of Dixie Highway north of Camino Real. It opened in 1930, and today Dixie Highway curves to accommodate the building.

Boca Raton’s first water plant was on East Boca Raton Road close to today’s Northeast Fifth Avenue. For the “Waterboy,” Geist, this was completely inadequate for his new hotel. On June 13, 1928, the city commission voted to put the water plant issue before voters. At the time, the city was in terrible debt due to the bust of the Boom, the construction of Town Hall, and the acquisition of “Old Besty,” the city’s first fire engine. A few days later, the city commission voted to hire J.B. McCrary Engineering to build the system and passed an emergency ordinance declaring the need for a new water system based on public health needs. The cost was $55,000, which came in the form of a loan from Geist, who also said, “...Water is the foundation of every community and without GOOD water, no one will ever come to this town. … There are three things that kill people—the first

is bad water, the second is bad whisky, and the third is good whisky.” The water plant was the most modern, state-of-the-art plant in Florida at the time and opened in 1929; it was a beautiful example of the Mediterranean style in vogue at the time.

Section. He had four houses constructed by Palm Beach architect Maurice Fatio in what was then a “tropical Georgian” style popular in Palm Beach at the time. The houses still stand; 1240 Cocoanut Road is in the Boca Raton and National Register of Historic Places.

In 1930, Geist began construction on two houses on Camino Real opposite the hotel designed by Marion Syms Wyeth in the Mediterranean style. They reportedly cost $45,000—a tremendous sum in 1930. The westernmost house was sold in 1931; the easternmost house didn’t sell right away and was leased to club members, at least in the 1930s. The latter is historically designated and still stands at 290 East Camino Real. In 1936, he made a second attempt in the neighborhood east of the Intracoastal and south of the Club, known as the Estates

In 1935, Club Manager Anderson told the town that many Club members had airplanes, and wouldn’t it be great if Boca Raton had an airport? Over the next several years he wrote many letters to officials at state and local levels seeking funding for the project. The town was able to offer land “too far west” for development, a salary for an airport manager, and some labor and equipment to apply for a Works Progress Administration (WPA) grant in 1936. When the WPA hesitated because the offer was too low, Anderson encouraged city fathers to

add an additional $15,000, including rock for the runways, equipment, and skilled labor. He also campaigned in Washington and arranged for the Club to pay for part of the project. By 1937, the airport was in operation, although without lights or even a hangar. The presence of even this modest facility would be vital in attracting the Boca Raton Army Air Field to town in 1942.

Another Pratt story about Geist is the scene he created upon his arrival in his private train car each year. Pratt reported: Club-connected people and their relatives were expected to turn out at the railroad station. While the club orchestra serenaded him, Geist descended from his car like a deity. He went down the receiving line, shaking hands with everybody in what he believed to be true democratic fashion. The gentry was being nice to the peasants. In the spring, the absurd performance was repeated in reverse. The old-time Boca Raton residents remember the hotel orchestra playing for Mr. G. and everybody in town showing up for his arrival. And why not? The man, with his fancy clubhouse, was truly the savior of poor little Boca Raton, which was suffering whiplash after the failure of the Mizner Development Corporation and the dramatic bust of the Boom. Throughout the Depression years, almost every person in Boca Raton owed their livelihood to the Club. They either worked there part-time or supplied goods and services to the hotel. Geist’s “self-serving” projects also brought a safe new water supply, an airport, two bridges, and a shiny new passenger station for all Boca’s citizens to enjoy. Today, few people recognize the name of a man who so impacted the history of our community. Clarence Geist did not live to see the new drawbridge at Camino Real; he died in June of 1938. In its 1939 dedication, the bridge was actually named in his honor, “in memory of the part played by the late Clarence H. Geist in the development of Boca Raton.”

one that left all 520 guests wishing for more. The three-day Engage!23 Summit luxury business symposium at The Boca Raton was more than a fête; it was also a moment to be inspired by the wedding industry’s most creative and talented professionals. The 43rd Engage! event capped an impressive 2023 series of events hosted in Sicily, Paris, and Montenegro, and culminating at The Boca Raton, a destination the two founders of Engage! selected for its exceptional hospitality and design creativity. “There is nothing easy about hosting, let alone impressing 500+ of the world’s top luxury wedding and event planners—and they knocked it out of the

park!” says Engage! co-founder Rebecca Grinnals of The Boca Raton’s attention to detail. Leaning into the overarching theme of “A New Golden Era,” which alluded to the destination’s own revitalization, the Engage!23 Summit was focused on honoring The Boca Raton’s unique history while also keeping the moment contemporary, elevating service, and enhancing all the countless property amenities and activities, says Tia Azzara, the assistant director of catering at the property. Using the property’s entire 200-acre space, Azzara and Engage! were given an expansive campus to provide various delights. “From a Yacht Rock welcome party extravaganza to an elegant golf luncheon (aptly themed, as part of

‘Caddyshack’ was filmed here) to dancing the night away each night in our many iconic event venues, we truly leaned into the property itself—and no detail was left unturned,” Azzara says. The idea was to keep guests in awe from Summit’s first moment until its last. The welcome night party included a 500-piece drone display that shone brightly across The Boca Raton’s skyline, showcasing a choreographed performance featuring nautical images inspired by Yacht Club that mesmerized guests who mingled at Harborside Pool Club’s lawn and pool. Mizner Center’s elegant setting served as the perfect background for Engage!’s speaker sessions and meetings. In addition, Azzara and Boca By Design,

the in-house design and décor company, incorporated The Boca Raton’s many other spaces to coalesce the summit, including the Grand Ballroom, which served as the site for the final gala evening, a showstopping one by all accounts. Throughout the entire three-day event, attendees, speakers, and members of the media were encouraged to wear “Boca Pink,” a nod to the resort’s best-known hue and allusion to its former nickname The Pink Palace. But when it came to the event’s gala, it was all gold. “Gold never goes out of style, so it was an easy transference to honor our own roots and do what we do best: host world-class events,” says Azzara. “Our new golden era was personified with this elegant and sophisticated dinner, all while maintaining a chic and contemporary vibe, which is the direction that the hotel has taken. Boca By Design was instrumental in each event, alongside a talented team of designers and vendors who executed each detail with precision and the most discerning design elements. This gala was truly iconic and the culmination of an awe-inspiring three days of exceptional events and activations around every turn.” And another special moment of the gala? A surprise performance by rapper and Sunshine State native Flo Rida. Though keeping this major performer a secret from 500 attendees was a challenge, the team pulled it off—and the results paid dividends. The hour-plus-long performance had the entire crowd energized and belting out lyrics from the dance floor, and the concert kicked up a notch when Flo Rida invited attendees up to the stage to join him. There was even an after-party

at the iconic Cathedral room that went late into the evening as guests danced the night away while laser-light shows illuminated the dance floor. As Azzara says, “It was an amazing way to conclude the Engage!23 Luxury Wedding Summit hosted at The Boca Raton.” Throughout the three-day event, the culinary team worked closely with Engage! members and The Boca Raton’s events team.
