Welcome to St Peter for the 2017 IPES Siam Cup. This is always a special day in the calendars of both clubs. It is special firstly because of the history behind the competition, one that stretches back to 1920 and recorded as the third oldest existing cup competition in the rugby world. Many have previously commented that the Siam ranked 2nd behind the Calcutta cup (1879), however after further investigation it is apparent that those two in fact fall in behind the United Hospitals cup (1874). And of course, it is also a special occasion because of the intense rivalry on show whenever the Reds and Greens clash in whatever sport is being played!

I was lucky enough to play in seven consecutive Siam cups from 1982 and can vividly remember the excitement that ran through the camp as the big day neared. With the game always attracting huge crowds, the adrenalin was guaranteed to be flowing as the

team ran out on to the park, and the boys in both camps will be feeling exactly like that today.

A huge thank-you goes out to Ipes for their tremendous sponsorship of the Siam Cup over the past few seasons, and I hope that they and their guests enjoy what will be their last Siam as the main, naming sponsor.

We of course extend a hearty welcome to all officials, players and supporters from Guernsey.

The original cup is made of silver ticals (Siamese coins) which were melted down, with the permission of King Rama VI of Thailand, at the Royal Crown Silversmith. Good morning or good afternoon – depends a bit as to whether or not you are one of the keen ‘alldayers’ who have been here since 10.30 to watch the Nash cup and / or Ladies’ Siam, followed by the Fallaize ahead of the main event. Welcome to everyone, players, visitors and supporters from both islands for what will I am sure be another very memorable day.

The Siam cup is steeped in history, I don’t need to remind anyone about that, but in recent years it had lost some of the competitive edge of yester year.

And so a couple of years ago a plan was introduced to even things up between the two sides, and with Jersey only fielding three members of their professional squad this afternoon, this will surely be one to reignite the flair and passion of everyone involved, both on and off the pitch.

Both clubs have had their best seasons ever in their respective histories. The Reds finished their Championship season in 4th equal (as Harvey likes to say), but placed 5th by virtue of games won, and Guernsey also finishing 5th in the National League 3 London and South East division. – Clearly very positive signs from both camps.

Jersey endured a really difficult first half of the season, blighted by injury, but since the turn of the year, heralded by returning players just got better and better both in the league and the B&I cup, bringing enormous excitement to St Peter. There was also an increasing presence on the road of the travelling faithful, noticeably to Doncaster, and then more importantly to Cork

for the clash with Munster ‘A’ where, led by our very own ‘Dame’ in the form of Ozzie, we certainly matched the locals for noise.

The B&I cup was an agonising loss against a very talented outfit, but there is still much pride in the camp for everything that was achieved.

Off the field there have been some sad losses with three stalwarts of the club taken from us. Barrie Stead played a huge part in supporting professional rugby in the early days; he was a fanatical supporter home and away and a great character. More recently Chris Scott, a former Chairman of the club and somebody who helped mould what is now a very successful Athletic set-up died, and finally less than two weeks ago Vic Hanby, President from 1989–96 who played a pivotal role when the new clubhouse was built and latterly a very active coach for the Minis & Juniors who paid a moving tribute to him at last weekend’s Junior Siam. All great men who gave so much to the club, and all of whom would have been here today cheering on Jersey against our oldest rivals. Jersey Reds, like many other clubs rely on volunteer support, and these were three of the best.

Back to this afternoon’s proceedings, and to what I am sure will be a noisy and tense affair. As ever I urge you to get behind your team – Come on you Reds!

The last one: Munster ‘A’ 29 Jersey 28

A fine comeback by Munster 'A' saw Jersey Reds denied the chance to lift the British & Irish Cup after defeat by the narrowest of margins.

Stunned by the visitors' strong start and trailing by 18 points as the final minute of the first half ticked around, the Irish province rallied with four tries in 16 minutes to get their hands on the trophy they had previously won in 2012.

It was cruel on Jersey, who also went out of the B&I by one point at the semi-final stage of last season's B&I, but the consolation was to have played a full part in a pulsating match, possibly the most exciting final so far in eight seasons of this competition.

Irish Independent Park witnessed a storming start from the visitors, with a break down the left

by Ross Adair enabling winger Nick Scott to glide over in the corner and touch down after just 70 seconds. Callum Sheedy added two penalties, and soon afterwards the fly-half converted his team's second try. With the hosts bracing themselves for Jersey's renowned maul, quick ball at the front of a lineout was fed back

by James Freeman and Gary Graham to hooker Joe Buckle, who ploughed over.

The home side was rattled, conceding penalties in quick succession and making a series of handling errors that prevented them gaining a foothold in the match. But eventually they were able to secure the possession and territory that enabled Gavin Coombes to force his way over the line in the 40th minute.

The second half began amid a backdrop of mounting noise from the home supporters, plus a boisterous contingent from Jersey, in a crowd that was given officially as 983 but appeared much higher. Those present knew the first score of the second half would be important, and it was the home side who claimed it within 90 seconds, hooker Kevin O'Byrne going over after some powerful approach play by his team-mates.

Both sides were feeling the tension and an outbreak of fisticuffs took a while to settle down, although referee Craig Maxwell-Keys deemed no action was necessary.

Although Kieran Hardy restored Jersey's lead with a 40-metre burst to the line after a Munster scrum had buckled, the Irish side were looking potent and their discipline and handling

was unrecognizable from the first half, with pressure mounting on the Reds. David Johnston darted over for the hosts' third try, and then Munster took the lead for the first time when the back-line set Alex Wootton off on a brilliant run down the left. The winger beat several tackles and scored near the posts.

Although Sheedy briefly restored his side's lead from the tee, Johnston added a penalty with 10 minutes to go and the Reds couldn't find the winning score they needed in the closing stages in spite of some threatening runs by Apakuki Ma'afu and replacement Lewis Robling.

Jersey Head Coach Harvey Biljon, disappointed to have fallen at the final hurdle by the narrowest of margins said, “We had done really well to build a good lead by taking our opportunities – you don't get many chances against a good team, but the tries just before and after half-time were crucial and we made a couple of uncharacteristic lapses.

Overall the team and the Island can be proud of the season that we've had.”

Today’s opposition: Guernsey Raiders

It does not seem that long ago that Guernsey Raiders were fighting desperately for survival at National Three London & South East level.

Now, as the lads prepare for what they hope will be a first Siam Cup win in nine years, they can reflect on the finest campaign in the history of the club: fifth place in the table and real hope of improving on that next season.

That’s not a dream, but a reality as the club benefits from astute team building from both within and outside the Island and by boxing clever in the recruitment market.

Unlike some clubs at their level, Raiders can’t and won’t splash the cash to entice new talent; they do it the hard way, the most satisfying way.

In many ways, though, it is remarkable that Jordan Reynolds’ men finished fifth in a highlycompetitive division, as back in the autumn they managed to lose six games in a row. They then hit back with remarkable character and capitalising on greater player depth, battled their way back up the table.

At their best, or close to it Raiders are a match for anyone at this level. The best sides in the division, including the likes of Tonbridge Juddians, Wimbledon and Hertford were all pushed close by our lads and, some say that the Raiders have the best pack in the league. Before a ball was kicked late last summer, Reynolds was eyeing a top-six spot.

Raiders had finished the previous season like a train and © Martin Gray given a fair-wind on the injury front, it was realistic to expect something even better.

For a while during the early season it seemed that it would be much better. Raiders couldn’t stop winning even when most of their early games were away. It should have been better, Shelford pipping us by a single score in the UK when Raiders should have won.

Still, third place, with 15 points from the first four games, was a promising return for Reynolds’ side.

"Even with a full-strength side I would have taken three wins in September," said the coach at the time. "Now we are getting recognition from other clubs that our pack is strong and our attack is potent.”

"However, while having comments made to us that are positive is great, these comments need to be made at the end of the season in order for it to have been a successful one, not just a few weeks in.�

"We have got to compete week-in, week-out, otherwise our challenge at the top of the table will be short-lived," he added with a large degree of foresight.

Reynolds was not getting carried away, which is just as well. The rot soon set in with that horror

run. By December though, the recovery shoots were in evidence, and over the second half of a wonderfully entertaining season for the Garenne Stand faithful, some exhilarating rugby was played in front of ever-expanding crowds.

Raiders now go into the biggest game of the season relatively injury-free, and with hopes higher than they have been in years. They threatened the big shock 12 months ago, but can it really materialise at St Peter?

TOM CEILLAM: The man you can depend on, according to his coach Jordan Reynolds. Raiders' Head Coach is a big fan of the alwaysconsistent Ceillam, and believes he is still some years away from his peak in the specialist position of hooker.

“He is still very young, and probably won't be at his best until he is 27 or 28. Tom has certainly got the right attitude,” said Reynolds. “He will throw his body around in games and is now respected as one of the senior players. He is a pretty boisterous character around the dressing room and when he says something, it is normally pretty decent.”

The player himself says two men have been a big influence on him, firstly the current Coach, and the second his team-mate Nick Barton.

“Barts was a massive influence,” says Ceillam, who admits he is quite hard on himself, but for good reason. “I've got to be hard because of the sacrifices you make.”

LAYTON BATISTE: He's been a Garenne crowd favourite for a long time and yet he is still only 27.

‘Big Layts’ seems to have been around for ages, and there is a remarkable resilience about the front rower with the ‘Made in Guernsey’ stamp that gets that extra roar from his home crowd when he goes on one of his trademark, bulldozing runs.

The 6ft 1in, 144 kg stonemason with Granite Le Pelley has been at the club now for 16 years and says that his playing highlights to date have to be winning the Siam twice on the bounce in 2007 and 2008.

“As a teenager, it was just incredible. When I was a bit younger I always wanted to be a professional rugby player, but now it's all about what I can do to help Guernsey Raiders go as high as we possibly can through the leagues. The club has really come on in the 10 years that I have been involved with senior rugby. We are getting better quality guys coming in every year and we are developing as a team.”

LEWIS HILLIER: Injuries have blighted the end of Lewis Hillier’s debut season as club captain, but the lock forward is fully expected to take up his place against Jersey.

His presence is key to the team performance, having consistently had a positive impact in the set-piece as well as the loose.

“Having Lewis back will hopefully help the work-rate around the pitch, but he will also go back to calling our line-outs,” said Head Coach Jordan Reynolds when his leader returned to action earlier in the season.

Hillier is one of many current Raiders who have yet to enjoy that winning Siam feeling, and his strong influence on the squad in recent seasons makes him long overdue for it.

Held on a gloriously sunny day, the 2017 Minis & Juniors’ Siam Tournament took place last weekend on Saturday 29th April, and started with an emotional tribute to Vic Hanby, an U12 coach and club stalwart who sadly passed away earlier in the week.

From the U7’s through to the Colts, each age group competed for their own respective trophies against our sister-island counterparts.

The U15s, U16s and Colts each put on a brilliant display of competitive rugby on the main pitch with each Jersey team taking the honours this year.

The rest of the Minis & Juniors’ games took place on various pitches around the club, and with the exception of the U7s and U9s all of the trophies were won by Jersey.

The U7s ran a mini-tournament for their age group that saw 55 children competing in mixed ability teams against four Guernsey teams, and this year saw Guernsey coming out as overall winners.

Minis & Juniors 2017 Siam continued

This year also saw the inaugural Girls U15 Siam that was successfully won by Jersey, and hopefully bodes well for the future at a time that our senior womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side has been going through a year of consolidation and rebuilding.

Excitement was evident around all pitches and every game was played in the spirit of rugby. Congratulations and thanks to all players, parents, coaches, managers and organisers for a very successful and enjoyable day.

Guard of Honour

The final Guard of Honour duty of the season for the very popular Ipes Siam cup is shared between two of the Mini and Juniorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; squads; both the U10s and U12s will welcome the players from the two Island sides out on to the pitch for the main game.

The U10s had a fantastic second half of the season with plenty of rugby including our own Easter Festival as well as matches against Cheadle Hulme and Hall Grove, and then finished in style last weekend with an 11-4 win over their Guernsey counterparts in the Junior Siam.

The U12 squad has also had a good end to their season, with an 8-2 victory last weekend in the Junior Siam. This was particularly satisfying as they had been beaten by Guernsey in a recent visit to our sister isle, and so had to overcome that set-back, as well as a bout of early nerves that were evident in the first half.

Great to see two Reds' players named in the Greene King IPA Championship 'Dream Team' for the 2016/17 season.

Prop Simon Kerrod and lock Pierce Phillips were both chosen after a poll of the coaches of the 11 Championship clubs, maintaining a rich tradition of Jersey players in the Dream XV. Both players are leaving Jersey having agreed moves to Aviva Premiership club Worcester Warriors for 2017/18. South African Kerrod, 24, joined the Reds midway through last season and has been a cornerstone of the pack since then, making around 35 competitive appearances.

Phillips, also 24, has spent three seasons in Jersey after joining from Darlington Mowden Park in summer 2014. He made an estimated 56 competitive appearances during this time and earned his Dream Team selection for this season in spite of missing half of the season after

sustaining an injury in September. His return to action coincided with his team's fine run in the Championship, taking us to the cusp of the playoffs, and to the British & Irish Cup final.

Former Jersey players named in the Dream XV: 2013-14: Jon Brennan. 'The Bear' was part of the Jersey journey from London Three to the Championship and hung up his boots on Siam Cup day in 2015 2014-15: Sam Lockwood and Harry Williams.

Williams earned a move to the Premiership with Exeter Chiefs at the end of that season and has recently been called up to the England squad for the summer 2017 tour of Argentina 2015-16: Sam Lockwood. One level down, and former Jersey player and Spanish international Matt Cook (son of our former player and Coach Colin) watched the Tunbridge Wells side of which he is Head Coach travel to Chingford for the promotion play-off between the runners-up in London 1 North and South leagues.
