After such a positive year, with big coups including comedian Lee Evans choosing to perform his warm up gigs here and a near sell-out run of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, 2014 will be a tough act to follow. We do have a number of surprises in store in 2015 but, for now, here are some highlights for the early part of our 150th anniversary year.

2015 is our monumental 150th anniversary! Yes, Friday 17th April marks the sesquicentennial of the Gloucester Street theatre, built by Henry Cornwall in 1865 and initially called Cornwall’s Royal Amphitheatre & Circus. That is undoubtedly a milestone of note so we are planning a number of celebrations throughout the year which we hope islanders and visitors will support to commemorate this very special occasion. We will make further announcements about what we have in store via our e-newsletter which you can sign up to at www.jerseyoperahouse.co.uk

Award-winning actor Jack Shepherd will be touring here with Classic Ghosts; a new production of two spine-tingling masterpieces by Charles Dickens and M.R. James. You can have the time of your life with A Night of Dirty Dancing; a live tribute to the celebrated 1987 movie, enjoy an evening at the ballet with the acclaimed Moscow City Ballet productions of Giselle and Swan Lake, or have a laugh with stand-ups Patrick Monahan, Dylan Moran, Omid Djalili, Stewart Francis and Milton Jones.

Middle Ground Theatre Company presents Classic Ghosts; a lavish new production of two spine-tingling masterpieces, Charles Dickens’ The Signalman and M.R. James’ Oh Whistle, And I’ll Come To You, My Lad. Starring award-winning veteran actor Jack Shepherd (Wycliffe), Terrence Hardiman (The Demon Headmaster/ Cadfael), Dicken Ashworth (Coronation Street/Emmerdale) and a full supporting cast.

The Signalman

By Charles Dickens Adapted by Francis Evelyn 1880. The exquisitely unnerving tale of a tormented signalman who is haunted by visions of impending disaster on his isolated stretch of line. Can a well-meaning traveller, who chances upon the lonely signal box while out walking, calm the man’s fears before he spirals into self-destruction?

Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come To You, My Lad

By M.R.James Adapted by Margaret May Hobbs 1907. Professor Parkins, a Cambridge academic, is spending an out-of-season holiday at a bleak English east coast hotel. At an old graveyard, near a deserted beach, he finds an old bone whistle. On cleaning it, he discovers the inscription: Quis est iste qui venit (Who is this who is coming?). Blowing the whistle, he awakens a disturbing supernatural force. A terrifying ordeal follows and, though his cynicism tries to dismiss his unearthly encounters, his eyes and ears cannot. Meera Syal (The Kumars, Goodness Gracious Me) returns to the National Theatre, directed by Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road). Pulizter Prize-winner Katherine Boo spent three years in India’s Annawadi slum, recording the lives of its residents. From her uncompromising book, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012, David Hare has fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale. India is surging with global ambition but beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport

lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own. However their schemes are fragile; world recession threatens the garbage trade, and a slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will shatter the neighbourhood. www.ntlive.com Tickets

THE HARD PROBLEM LIVE SCREENING

Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love, Arcadia) returns to the National Theatre with his highly-anticipated new play The Hard Problem, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Othello, Hamlet, One Man, Two Guvnors).

This is ‘the hard problem’ which puts Hilary at odds with her colleagues including her first mentor Spike, her boss Leo and the billionaire founder of the institute, Jerry. Hilary needs a miracle and she is prepared to pray for one.

Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brain science institute, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question at work, where psychology and biology meet. If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness?

Opera’s most enduring tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar, who sets the action across two time periods but in the same Sicilian village.

Rae Smith (War Horse) has designed the moodily atmospheric 1900 village square setting of Cavalleria, which transforms to a 1948 truck stop for the doomed vaudeville troupe of Pagliacci.

Marcelo Álvarez rises to the challenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci.

Eva-Maria Westbroek (Cavalleria) and Patricia Racette (Pagliacci) sing the unlucky heroines, and Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium.
