With clay, a traditional material that has been used in art or craft for centuries, the crafting method is limited to handwork. Nowadays, through the advancement of science and technology, robotic arms provide a revolutionary method of crafting. They could create a technologically advanced environment that is more precisely and variably .

A design focus is to maximize the value of robots when they are used in clay manufacturing. The geometry of forming can only be applied to certain types of clay by analyzing the traditional artwork of clay. The goal is to liberate the geometry of shaping and create a new continuously shaping method by using a robotic arm and parametric tool.

To accommodate a variety of types of geometry transformation, I divide each point of geometry from circle to triangle to make each side of points controllable.

And discover two different shaping techniques: extrusion and trimming. Both methods have been tested, and the final decision is extrusion.

TOOL EXPERIMENTS 01 The initial tool experiment used 3D printers to create a core that can transform into a variety of shapes by controlling each side of the joints. However, the joints that haven't been fixed are challenging to control and the framework is too thin to use.

In the second experiment, hydraulic pressure was used as shaping power. However, the power is difficult to control from four directions, and the tube connecting to the syringe is prone to leakage. Clay that is shaped by this method isn't precise, but it provides a new idea in the follow-up design process.

Teaming up with my partner, we combined our case studies to find a method to design a new type of structure unit that can be applied to building structures.

Structures must not only preserve each characteristic, but also complement each flaw.

CASE STUDY 01 timber pavilion of the vidy-lausanne theatre 01 - The Vidy-Lausanne Theatre Pavilion is the prototype of a new type of construction that utilizes wood-wood connectors that interlock to form a structure and assembly. The double-ply assembly technique developed for this building uses folded panels that are both a load-bearing structure and cladding.

Without using any nails or metal fittings. The last step (twisting) of the assemble sequence is critical because it fixes the whole structure and makes it stable.

Having tested the base model, it is in a stable condition. In the Cidori system, the front part is larger than the back part. This creates an interlock that prevents the double through tenon from collapsing when forces add on both sides. The model also includes both a columnar and face structure.

To ensure this structure is stable, we use fusion to analyze strength in different dimensions, so that we can see more precisely the deformation of the structure itself.

Generally, in common casting crafts, the interaction between casting and mould is rigid. The mould exists only to serve a specific shape to the fluid during the statement of phase change; after that, it loses its function within the whole casting system and must be discarded. Traditionally, casting crafts have been characterized by efficiency and accuracy, which is defined by mould shape. During casting production, a mutation is always considered a defect or failure. Therefore, we decide to investigate the interaction between the fluid material and the casting mould. Casting fluid has no longer become the mirror of mould pattern. By their interaction, these components will redefine the unexpected result, and in turn, the transformation will provide a realistic statement of material behaviour.

In the past, the resin has been used primarily as a secondary or reinforcement material in buildings. Now, epoxy resin has the potential to serve as a structural material based on its performance. Rather than being the coating component, the fabric in combination with the coating provides a new method for form construction.

Due to the soft and deformable nature of the fabric, casting craft will no longer be limited to discussing rigid, hard mold shapes. By using this soft material for a casting mold, casting fluid materials can shape and adjust the final form themselves.

As a result of adding tension to the frame, fluid is forced to move more towards the area that allows more formation to occur.

The leaking fluid generates the stalactite structure due to its viscosity and the movement on the formation mould.

Gravity gives the weight of fluid to the mold, which causes the formation; also, the porosity of gauze allows its whole volume to balance the accumulation of fluid throughout the entire mass of the material. Finally, the dynamic form of interactions has been captured through sclerosis.

The Voronoi diagram helps us determine the pattern of the flexible gauze. By the time we discover the statement of the testing unit, we have coincidentally encountered the Voronoi diagram.

Therefore, we selected this divide logic as the form-finding method for the casting tectonic. The following tests are also designed to determine the tension generated by mold since this is the main factor that affects the structure's formation.

By controlling several non-flexible strings on mold, we could predict the distributed area that generates the majority of stalactite columns, then we could apply this result to determine the final structure.

PROTOTYPES STAGE 1

Initial testing mock-ups of this stage are taken and analyzed based on the orientation of the shell structure. After test 4 we could handle and predict the single or multiple shell units from the very beginning, all the way to the result.

Nevertheless, this design orientation does not fit with the purpose of what we discussed about how this suspension casting craft is designed to provide structural performance.

Following the discussion of the shell structure, which we define as stage 1, we revisited the relationship of the materials' behavior under this suspension casting craft.

Therefore, we realize pure epoxy resin columns could not be fabricated in this casting craft.

The tension area of the single-layer fabric is calculated iteratively after positioning the construction area based on structural considerations for the overall structure.

The structural connection joints are arranged in a non-overlapping manner, distributing the overall weight and adhesion of each layer's fabric.

The construction industry is heading towards "smart construction" in the future in order to achieve construction automation. The goal of this study is to investigate the possibility of upgrading the bricklaying process in the construction industry. In an age of manpower shortage, automated systems will be developed to replace human labor. This is in line with the SDGs of industry, innovation infrastructure, and responsible consumption and production. Reducing unnecessary procedures and lengthy labor is one of the issues of the construction labor shortage, so it is a part of construction development. Hence, the purpose of this project is to combine AI visual object recognition with intelligent grasping of the robotic arm.

[ DYNAMIC MOLDING ]

Dynamic Molding Workshop proposed a state-of-the-art digital manufacturing system. Utiliz- ing robotic arm to control and match the reality to fit the shape of the dynamic mold. The traditional curved template is difficult to form quickly and accu- rately, and it needs to consume a lot of manufactur- ing costs, thus limiting the design possibilities. Based on the development of TACO robot software, it can communicate with external devices in real time. The installation aims to show the resilience in the rebirth of Kinmen. We use transparent plastic PETG to 3-D print out the image of flowers blooming in the land of Kinmen and spread them on the beach as if the seeds of hope are planted into the soil of history. During the day, the flowers dazzle in reflected sunlight; then, at night, they shimmer in the afterglow of special lighting effects. Alternating between day and night, shining and glimmering, the cycle symbolizes the transience of life and the new hope that each day brings.
