NBRPA: LEGENDS FANTASY WEEKEND

The Legends Fantasy Weekend at Mohegan Sun was a delightful mix of slam dunks, service and soirées for NBRPA Members, guests and supporters on April 24-27 in Uncasville, Conn. All-inall, more than 30 former professional basketball players attended this philanthropic fundraising weekend that included community initiatives, a fantasy camp, celebrity black jack tournament and black-tie awards gala.

6

“The Legends Fantasy Weekend was a great success as our Board of Directors continues to focus on raising funds designed to increase community service initiatives and provide greater programming for NBRPA Members,” said Chairman of the Board Otis Birdsong. “Thank you to Mohegan Sun for hosting us, thanks to our partners and

most of all, thanks to our members for making this amazing weekend possible.” On Saturday, April 26, dozens of NBRPA Legends conducted a free youth basketball clinic for children from the local Police Athletic/Activities League and Boys & Girls Club at Mohegan Sun Arena. That evening, Mohegan Sun hosted the Legends of Basketball Philanthropy Awards Gala honoring 11-time NBA Champion Russell, 3-time NCAA men’s basketball champion Jim Calhoun, 8-time NCAA women’s basketball champion Pat Summitt and sports activist Dr. Richard Lapchick for their legacies on and off the court. The wellattended event also included a delightful keynote address from Wolf Blitzer. Russell delighted the room of 500+ attendees with an insightful, reflective and often

humorous speech about his legacy in acceptance of the NBRPA’s Pioneer Award. Former University of Connecticut Coach Calhoun thrilled the hometown crowd with tales from UConn in acceptance of the Community Architect Award and former University of Tennessee Lady Vols star Chamique Holdsclaw brought out emotions from everyone in attendance as she lauded her former Coach, Pat Summitt – who could not attend because of her fight with Alzheimer’s Disease – and accepted the Courage Award on her behalf. Dr. Richard Lapchick spoke about his career as a civil rights activist and touched on alleged racist remarks by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in his

moving acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award. “Thank your to our members, supporters and Mohegan Sun for being part of our inaugural Legends Fantasy Weekend,” said NBRPA President & CEO Arnie D. Fielkow. “We had a very full weekend of service and fun for a purpose. The Legends of Basketball Philanthropy Awards Gala was a beautiful moment for the NBRPA as we spotlighted our organization’s community service initiatives and honored true giants of the game of the legacies on and off the court. There is no doubt that the NBRPA’s brand and mission were significantly elevated and it was an honor to have our great partners at both the NBA and National Basketball Players Association join us in celebration of the NBRPA.” The Great Bill Russell Ballin’ Magazine | July 2014 | 2nd Edition

WHO’S NEXT?

BALLIN’ FUTURE STARS

By Van Coleman Brooklyn, NY: JUNE 26th: The NBA Draft was held at the Barclays Center and the question everyone is asking will get its answer, WHO’S NEXT! But, before the NBA teams made their decisions, Ballin Magazine was ready to make their choices as to Who’s Next in our eyes. At the top of our list are two magnificent forwards, 6-8 bookends Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker, this duo has the ability to make the biggest impact in the NBA this coming season! They may get a late challenge by seven foot post prospect Joel Embiid, but in our eyes they are the “Cream of the Crop!”

J abari

andrew

This versatile forward has a basketball I.Q. that is off the charts, knows how to score in various ways from the arc, on the post up or off the dribble. He can attack the hoop or stick the mid-range jumper. He has been compared to Paul Pierce and Grant Hill because of the versatility and ability to score or create for his teammates. Make no mistake about it he is the most NBA ready talent in the 2014 draft!

This freakish athlete can flat out play in the upper stratosphere only inhabited by the best athlete’s in the NBA! He has given us flashes of Melo, Lebron, and even Magic at times with his ability to attack, finish with highlights or ability to make spectacular pass to open teammates. He will be a big-time scorer in the NBA and as his game matures, he could become a perennial All-Star…Look for him to step in and make an impact from day one in the league!

Kyle Lowry plays for the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. A feisty 6’0 point guard from Philadelphia, Kyle has built a strong reputation of toughness and high basketball IQ as he was drafted out of Villanova in 2006 by the Memphis Grizzlies. As a Top 10 Point guard in the NBA, Kyle knows no limits to where his game might take him. Currently he just signed a four year deal with the Toronto Raptors. Kyle was one of the summer’s hottest free agents. By staying in Toronto, the Raptors will be one of the top teams in the eastern conference.

“Summer road trip” could be a chapter title in the autobiography of Kyle Lowry. He took a moment to speak with us about what he will be riding in this summer, “I like the style, the performance and class of the Autobiography, the 2014 Range Rover is my choice” Kyle said. Just like his game this SUV can be defined by power under the hood but graceful on the outside. This ride earns 4.3 Stars

Dwight Howard plays for the NBA’s Houston Rockets. A 6’11” Center who is also capable of playing power forward, Howard was drafted out of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy in Georgia in 2004. Before he was drafted in 2004, Howard said that he wanted to use his NBA career and Christian faith to “raise the name of God within the league and throughout the world”. In November 2009, he was named one of the 10 finalists for the Jefferson Awards for Public Service, which awards athletes for their charitable work.

When Dwight aka Superman is not helping in the community, he is an avid car buff. All the rides in his garage come with a unique style and attitude. His 2012 Ferrari FF is no different. This four seat Ferrari was made famous by Dwight’s teammate Chandler Parsons as he got to drive it for the week during the 2014 NBA playoffs. Dwight was a NBA All Star for the eighth time and has been working on a new TV series called “The Dwight Howard Show”. Whether driving the lane on or off the court Dwight Howard has definitely got us watching for what’s next. This Ride earns 4.5 Stars.

Patrick Ewing is already a basketball icon. A member of the Hall of Fame, Dream Team & NCAA Champion, he has proven why he belongs on an NBA bench. As the associate head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, Patrick Ewing hasn’t received his shot at a head coaching gig and gives his take on players going straight from the court to the sideline as coach. “It’s all about having the

opportunity,” Ewing says. “They had people who believed in them and gave them the opportunity to succeed or fail. As a coach and former player I bring a certain level of knowledge to the game. I can affectively communicate to the superstar as well as the journeyman.”

The season of renewal, rebirth and resurrection is upon us. From the shadows of wintery grey, cherry blossoms burst with shades of pink. Spring has finally arrived. And with this season comes the opportunity to find new life, joy and peace along with all of the sweetness of new beginnings and endless possibilities. My beloved spoke, and said to me: “ Rise up, my love, my fair one, And come away. For lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; The time of singing has come, And the voice of the turtledove Is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth her green figs, And the vines with the tender grapes Give a good smell. Rise up, my love, my fair one, And come away!” Song of Solomon 2:10-13
