The military is a major presence in Colorado Springs with five major installations, numerous commands and headquarters, including the new Headquarters, Space Operations Command (SpOC) calling it home. A thriving defense industry is one of the cornerstones of Colorado Springs’ economy. The military also has a major impact in shaping the “personality” of the Pikes Peak region.

United States Space force - Space operations Command The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is the newest branch of the Armed Forces. It was established December 20, 2019, with enactment of the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. The USSF was established within the Department of the Air Force, meaning the Secretary of the Air Force has overall responsibility for the USSF, under the guidance and direction of the Secretary of Defense. Additionally, a four-star general known as the Chief of Space Operations (CSO) serves as the senior military member of the USSF. The CSO is a full member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The USSF is a military service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. The USSF Headquarters and Office of the CSO are located in the Pentagon, just like the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) was re-designated as Headquarters, Space Operations Command (SpOC), at Peterson Space Force Base, one of three Field Commands within the USSF. SpOC generates, presents, sustains combat-ready intelligence, cyber, space and combat support forces and serves as the USSF Service Component to USSPACECOM.
