FOREST CITY C H U R C H | E LG I N Forest City Church, a non-denominational Christian community, is the client for this project. With their main campus located in Rockford, Illinois, this project seeks to provide a newly constructed home for their Elgin campus. The focus of the studio is to create a meaningful architectural experience for users with a variety of religious backgrounds, while also connecting to the ideals and mission of Forest City. The design approaches ideas of sacred space, social/urban context, and tectonic expression.

The design solution incorporates two “heavy walls” that house the support program and define major interior spaces, while also grounding the immediate site context. The axis running through the building parallel to the heavy walls guides users directly into the main lobby, which acts as the main communal space.

The circulation is informed by the chiseled, or cut-out openings in the heavy walls, leading users to the education/office wing, or the sanctuary and worship area.

The entry and main lobby area features a heavy timber ceiling with exposed connections. A skylight on the perimeter of the textured ledgestone wall flushes the wall with light, highlighting both the wood-to-steel tectonic as well as the openings that circulate into the sanctuary.

C I T Y O F E LG I N TOWNHOUSES The Townhome Project in Downtown Elgin is focused on the formulation of an architectural and urban project that integrates the “townhouse” typology in a complex urban context. The project aims to make connection from the downtown city center and the residential sector that crosses the river. Following the studio’s interests, the design incorporates components like sustainable building strategies, existing and potential social conditions, cultural variables, and overall urban experience.

City of Elgin Townhouses The commercial site details include several storefronts topped with a green roof plaza.

The underground parking has access to the public plaza via the tower elevator, private residential stair, or the street level staircases.

The residential units take inspiration from the notable use of brick and diversity of the city, as well as the idea of the site being a transitional space (Seen in the front facade fading brick motif).

WEST DUNDEE PUBLIC LIBRARY This project seeks to embrace a new community library that represents the nature of libraries being simultaneously collections, cultural institutions, and places of connection. The design objective is to create a meaningful human experience at a variety of scales to address urban context, site organization, large group activities, organization of media, etc.

The focus of the studio is to consider what makes a library in the 21st century and to generate solutions that respect the institution.

DETAILED SECTION

The design follows the studio’s focus on tectonic expression and human experience. The design reflects a libraries potentional to be a “natural” escape from day-to-day life. This is expressed in the incorporation of manufactured naturalism through the timber columns on the interior as well as the plant-lined window-wall.

Humanitarian Shelter | Ukraine

H U M A N I TA R I A N S H E LT E R | U K R A I N E This project adresses the refugee crisis that spawned from the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. After Russian invasion in Februrary of 2022, many Ukranian civilians were internally displaced or in positions of fleeing the countries borders. The design of the humanitarian shelter responds to ideas of transitional space, cultural considerations/ sensitivities, durability, upgradability, and cost effectiveness. The design is intended to accomodate 200 sq ft of habitable space.

In Ukraine and neighboring countries, 20-40% of straw is produced in excess. This project capitalizes on the excess straw production and uses it as building material. The basic wall construction is made from stacking standard sized straw bales and adding stucco to the exterior.

This offers the wall around an R-50 value, which is highly insulated and able to retain interior temperatures.

Humanitarian Shelter | Ukraine

Studio Spring 2022

The design draws inspiration from the rural steppes of Ukraine. The form is reflective of traditional folk homes, utilizing a thatched roof and stucco finish. The gabled roof extends down into a secondary exterior space, while allowing for the potential of expanding. It also serves as a wind shield and privacy barrier.

ADDITION TO A MASTERWORK This project proposes a theoretical scenario in which an art collector has purchased the internationally known “Farnsworth House” by Mies van der Rohe.

The intention of the new owner is to restore the house to its original condition and build an addition that supports the residential nature of the project as well as act as a conduit for public use. The design solution is both formal and ideological, considering historical significance, architectural theory, spatial and programmatic organization.

FIELD SKETCHING/ WAT E R C O L O R S One of the foundational tools of an architect...the sketchbook. On-site field sketching is a powerful way to practice observation skills and showcase understanding of a particular place. On a study tour through France and Italy, the following sketches showcase the discipline of learning through thinking and analyzing the built environment. The objective of the tour was also to explore different ways of visual communication and poetic artistry. Visited cities include Paris, Avignon, Genoa, Florence, Milan...
