THE HIGH LINE It is owned by the City of New York, and maintained and operated by Friends of the High Line. Following the Hudson River and cutting through serveral of New York’s neighborhoods -Greenwich, The Meatpacking District, Chelsea, and Midtown Manhatten- the High Line provides visitors with a hybrid public space full of entertainment, food, art, nature, and design.1

HIGH LINE OVERLOOK (AMPHITHEATER) The High Line contains a unique experience for visitors as it was created by removing the steel beams of the original High Line structure. The amphitheater (fully wheelchair accessible) is the site of both public performances and daily people-watching on the street below. Here the space is unique in that it provides users a view of the street below as well as a space to enjoy live entertainment.

SITE LOCATION 565 West St, New York, NY 10014 APPROX. 42,000 sq. ft

The site location is right next to the Whitney as well as across from Little Island. There is a lot of foot traffic being concentrated in this area for those reasons alone. Views of the Hudson River are a plus. The existing building is currently a meatpacking plant and seems out of place due to it’s close proximity to the art museum and such significant views.

MEATPACKING DISTRICT The Meatpacking District in New York City is a vibrant neighborhood located on the west side of Manhattan. It has undergone a significant transformation over the years, evolving from its historical role as a hub for meatpacking and industrial activities.

With numerous slaughterhouses, meatpacking plants, and meat distribution centers. It played a vital role in supplying meat to New York City. In the late 20th century, the Meatpacking District began to undergo a dramatic transformation. Old warehouses and industrial spaces were repurposed, and the district became a hub for creativity, art, and fashion. Many of the former industrial buildings were converted into trendy boutiques, art galleries, and upscale restaurants.1

The site being at the cusp of the Meatpacking District with its diverse culinary scene and Chelsea being known as a major hub for the contemporary art scene in New York City, I believe the site can draw from both to create aunique blend of history, culture, art, and entertainment.

TRAFFIC PATTERNS These diagrams are to call attention to the typical traffic patterns that happen around the site.2 Focusing on specific times of the day helps understand the flow of traffic accurately.

With a major highway hugging the West side of the site, a possible elevated pedestrian walkway seems appropriate when building upon the site.

GREEN SPACE When illustrating the public green space. around the High Line, it was more than I expected. As designers, we should always be mindful of our environmental impact when designing. Raising awareness to the amount of green available around the High Line promotes sustainbility and overall effecient lifestyles in the so called “concrete jungle”.

Amare is a home for the performing arts, creative development, internationally excellent programming and conferences. Interestingly about the Amare Performing Arts Center, the ground and first floor are entirely open to the public and visible through large glass openings to the facade of the Turfmarkt. Essentially, the layout plan of auditoriums alongside and over one another is surrounded by a ring of music studios and classrooms with their structures supporting each other’s foundation. 1`` This performing arts center incorporates both studio spaces as well as different hall spaces that intertwine within the building.

Built with flexibility in mind, the multi-use space is capable of hosting both art performances and exhibitions, separately or simultaneously. The 21m high Warehouse can hold up to 5000 people and is left bare for completely freedom of usage.

In addition, there is a Hall with a flexible stage which can work with the Warehouse and can house an audience of up to 1,600 seated or 2,000 standing.2 This unique project has opened my eyes as to what a performace space could be.

The Shed’s open infrastructure can be permanently flexible for an unknowable future and responsive to variability in scale, media, technology, and the evolving needs of artists. Its eight-level base building includes two levels of gallery space; the versatile Griffin Theater; and The Tisch Skylights, which comprise a rehearsal space, a creative lab for local artists, and a skylit event space. The McCourt, an iconic space for largescale performances, installations, and events, is formed when The Shed’s telescoping outer shell is deployed from over the base building and glides along rails onto the adjoining plaza.3 This project combines innovation and technology with the Arts in a harmoniuos way, something to considering when designing.

CASE STUDIES BING CONERT HALL Location: Stanford, United States Architects: Ennead Architects Year: 2012 Total sq. ft: +/- 1209486 Program Type: Concert Hall

The site design reinforces the balance between the arcadian quality of the Stanford Arboretum and the ordered axiality of the campus grid. fig. 12

The Bing Concert Hall exemplifies the seamless integration of architecture, acoustics and technology with the goal of transforming the practice, study and experience of the performing arts at Stanford. Home to Stanford Live and the University’s Music Department and providing a state-of-the-art venue for visiting performers and student artists, the building integrates performance and curriculum for students while engaging the greater Bay Area community. The program – the central element of which is an 842-seat vineyard style concert hall – includes a studio/rehearsal hall, artists’ suites, a music library, instrument storage rooms designed to double as practice rooms, an artists’ lounge and generous public amenities.4

The oval-shaped room is designed for optimal acoustics from every seat in the house, with the furthest seat only seventy-five feet from the conductor. fig. 13

PROGRAM PROBLEM STATEMENT The music of New York City is a diverse and important field in the world of music. It has long been a thriving home for popular genres such as jazz, rock, soul music, R&B, funk, and the urban blues, as well as classical and art music. Music industry statistics estimate that 52 percent of the U.S. population attends some sort of live music event each year. With this in mind, I found that the Meatpacking District in lower Manhattan lacks in the amount of venues/performance spaces for music. Proposing a performance hall/venue in the area would enhance the visitor experience as well as provide more diversity for cultural amenities.1

USER ANALYSIS Creating an interactive, open, and welcoming performing arts and entertainment space will attract much of the population that exists in New York City. As mentioned previously, the music scene here is notable and thriving. This space will attract creative minds who want to experience music.
