Sally’s go-to Smoothie

Obermeder’s advice to her 20-year-old self

Good for: DETOXIFYING • HAIR, SKIN, NAILS • ANTIOXIDANT-RICH • IMMUNITY and energy BOOSTER • DIGESTION • Less than 300 Cals PER serve

“My 20s were filled with angst, of feeling like I wasn’t good enough and didn’t belong. I never felt brave enough to go, ‘[TV] is what I want to do.’ So I’d say to [that girl]: Do what makes you feel happy. Life is short, you never want to die wondering so have a crack. If it doesn’t work, no problem – at least you tried.”

Annabelle, who’s now three-and-a-half, is slowly beginning to understand that her mum was very sick at the start of her life. “She’ll see pictures and say to me, ‘Look, that’s when you had no hair,” Obermeder says. “Sometimes she’ll see pictures of other women who have cancer and have no hair. She’ll say to me, ‘Is that you mummy?’” Having a large family was always the plan for Obermeder and her husband, but doctors have warned that another pregnancy will risk her life. She says surrogacy is now their only option, using frozen embryos left over from IVF when Annabelle was conceived. “We’re absolutely exploring [surrogacy],” she says of her options for completing her family. “It’s complicated and it’s quite a big mission. We’re looking overseas because that’s pretty much one of the only things you can do. We’re talking with some people and trying to work out what we can do.” For now, though, Obermeder is simply grateful for what she has in her life. “I walk around constantly saying, ‘Thank you, thank you’ to the universe for me being here, for having a family, for having a job I enjoy,” she adds. “I have great gratitude for everything.”

1 avocado, halved, peeled, stone removed 1 cup broccoli florets 1 cup kale, stalks removed 1 cup baby spinach 2 celery stalks 1 frozen banana 2 passionfruit, pulp extracted Large handful mint leaves 1 tsp chia seeds 1 tbs cleansing fibre powder (available at health-food stores) 1 lemon, juiced 1 teaspoon stevia Place all the ingredients in a blender with 2 cups water and 1/2 cup ice cubes. Blend until the desired consistency is reached. The blended passionfruit seeds can make the smoothie a bit gritty. If that doesn’t appeal to you, keep them whole by stirring them in after the other ingredients have been blended.

This is an edited recipe from Super Green Smoothies by Sally Obermeder and Maha Koraiem ($19.99, Allen & Unwin), on sale April 22.
