Adrian Bybee 20 Und40er

When others say a task is too hard, Adrian Bybee says, “Watch me do it.” His can-do attitude has helped this 33 year old build a successful career in the southeast Idaho insurance industry. Adrian is the owner of The Bybee Agency/American National Insurance. As a

The Pocatello native often takes his expertise and drive to achieve into the community he loves as a volunteer for a multitude of different organizations. He is a facilitator for the Pocatello/ Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce, a Rotary

graduate of Utah State University, Adrian holds two bachelor’s degrees one in Business Administration and another in Economics. Alongside these degrees he earned a minor in Personal Financial Planning. His drive for success was evident not only in the classroom but also on

Liaison for the Highland High School Interact Club, a Rotary member, actively volunteers as a mentor for the Boy Scouts of America and coaches Little League Football. Adrian is professionally affiliated with the NAIFA, the NFIB, the Pocatello/Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce and is a member of Pocatello Chiefs. At home Adrian is completely outnumbered by his wife and three daughters, but, he says “I love it.” Being active, meeting new people and spending time with family is very important to Adrian.

Amber Davis

Amber Davis has spent at least 15 years centering her professional and personal life around caring for others. As the owner and director of Care Connection of Idaho, Davis orchestrates in-home compassionate and professional care that improves

single mother. In addition to her professional work, Davis started Socks for Seniors - filling hundreds of Christmas stockings for area seniors who feel the sting of loneliness during the holidays. Davis is also affiliated with Pocatello-Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce, the National Care Planning Council, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Bannock Civitans, Idaho Health & Welfare Support Broker, and is a wish granter for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho. She has also done work for Camp Fire U.S.A., the Boy Scouts of America, and supported

Amy Tovey is the woman who does it all. At 39, she is the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of Health West. However, few people know that she also owns and operates Just Relevé, a dance/ballet/active wear shop in Pocatello. According to her nomi-

nator, there are few things that thrill Amy more than helping a young dancer find their first pair of perfect point shoes. Amy earned a bachelor’s degree from Idaho State University in health care administration. After completing her education, Amy took a job as the operations director for Intermountain Medical Clinic in Pocatello where she worked for

almost a decade. He career then took her to Idaho Falls where she became an administrator for HCA Physician Services - a job she kept until 2015 when she joined Health West. As the owner of Just Relevé, Amy finds joy in helping others discover dance. According to her nominator, she runs the shop because of her love of dance and for the opportunity to provide excellent customer service to many local area dancers. Amy’s other recognitions include being listed as a “Woman to Know” in the Idaho 4

Avery Kitchens

Avery Kitchens, 37, is the pastor of The Lighthouse Church and also leads the JNL Family Crisis Center. Through both organizations, Avery betters the lives of everyone he comes in contact with. The Pocatello pas-

Bethany Shultz Hurst

When Bethany Shultz Hurst steps into the classroom at Idaho State University, she is both a teacher and a writer. “Whether I’m teaching creative writing or composition, I seek to position myself in the classroom as a fellow writer,” Bethany said. “I experience the

same writing struggles, challenges, and triumphs as my students.” Although her humility keeps her always learning, Bethany has a long list of publications and accolades because of her dedication to the craft of writing. Bethany earned her bachelor’s degree in english from Colorado State University where she graduated with honors. She then earned a MFA in

creative writing and poetry from Eastern Washington University. Though well-educated in all types of writing, her passion is for poetry. She is the recipient of many awards for her work, including some of the top recognitions possible in the field of poetry. Her work was selected for inclusion in The Best American Poetry (2015). Her manuscript “Miss Lost Nation” won the national Robert Dana-Anhinga Poetry Prize in 2014. With this award comes publication of the book and a series of readings featur-

ing the author. She was a finalist for the Erskine J. Poetry Prize as well as the Kate Tufts Discovery Award in 2016. Her poetry is influenced by her lifetime in the American West and her engagement with issues of gender and parenting. While an accomplished poet, Bethany is also an extraordinary teacher. She has been recognized within ISU as a Master Researcher (2015), a distinguished teacher (2008) and with the university’s outstanding service award in 2011.


Brandi & Brian 20 Und40er Christensen

Brian and Brandi Christensen are the owners of the Pita Pit on East Center Street. For many years, the couple has used their business to give back to the community. The Christensens make a point of hiring high school students who

also constantly put the needs of their employees and the community before their own. The homeless and hungry in Pocatello are frequent beneficiaries of the Christensens compassion. Both put in community service hours at the Idaho Food Bank and they donate food to the Salvation Army. In addition, they sponsor a family each Christmas, bringing holiday cheer to those who are less fortunate. Through their business, the Christensens

are looking for job experience - providing the mentorship and learning opportunities they will need to succeed in future careers. They believe that a great team makes a great business and community. The Christensens

also created the “Pay it Forward” program at their restaurant. Through the program, customers can purchase a small meal for a hungry person in need. Customers can even attach a small note of encouragement for the recipient and post it on the store’s wall. “I think it’s our responsibility as a community to help people who are hungry and cold,”Brandi said. “It is definitely our responsibility to take care of that.”

Brandon Mickelsen

There are few people as dedicated to and passionate about family medicine as Dr. Brandon Mickelsen. The Idaho native is the director of Idaho State University’s Family Medicine residency program. In this capacity, he leads 21 new doctors through training that will make them world-class fam-

ily physicians. Many of these doctors remain in Idaho, taking the fire that Dr. Mickelsen has instilled in them and compassionately serving the state’s rural and underserved communities. Dr. Mickelsen’s unstoppable work ethic also benefits his own patients. He is a family physician at Intermountain Medical Clinic, Medical Director of One Source, as well as a medical staff member and CME chair at Portneuf Medical Center. He is also the speaker of the

house and a board member for the Idaho Medical Association. Since 2010, Dr. Mickelsen has also served as the president of the Southeast Idaho Medical Society. Among a long list of professional affiliations, he is also involved with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine, the Association for Family Medicine Residency Directors, and the University of Washington Department of Family Medicine. His formal education began at Idaho State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2002. 6

He then attended the University of New England where he became a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at Idaho State University the same program that he now leads as director. His residents honored him in 2009 with the Resident Teaching Award. He was also the programs preceptor of the year in 2011 and 2013. According to his nominator, “His dedication to medicine, educating others, and his active involvement in the community is what truly makes him stand out as a physician, mentor, coworker, boss and friend.”


Britt Dickman and her work ethic is unparalleled. … The knowledge and skills she exhibits are far superior to those of the typical young athletic trainer.” In her professional roles, Britt works tirelessly to help strengthen her student-athletes through the design and implementation of rigorous and comprehensive injury prevention programs. Although she points to many mentors as the force behind her success, Britt’s greatest influence is, by far, her father. “He has showed me and taught me the value of hard work,” Britt said “He has made me a believer in showing people what you are made of instead of telling them.”

Student athletes across southeast Idaho are thankful to have Britt Dickman in their corner. At only 24 years old, Britt is the head athletic trainer at the Portneuf Medical Center Sports Medicine Institute. She holds a bachelor’s of science degree in athletic training from the Univer-

sity of Montana and is also affiliated with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association as well as the Northwest Athletic Trainers’ Association. In addition, Britt is a preceptor for the Idaho State University Master of Science in Athletic Training Program and is affiliated with both the National Safety First Aid Council and the National Youth Sport Safe Campaign. When people who are struggling with addiction need the inspiration of a success story, they need look no farther than Brittney Carter. The 29 year old is a certified personal

In this group she meets with those who struggle with “hurts, habits, and hang-ups.” In these meetings she is able to invest into the lives of those ladies who are looking for a way out, a hope, as well as an encourager. Brittney herself struggled for many years with drug abuse, a vice that eventually landed her in jail. When she was released, she

At age 32, Brooke Colling is the owner of One Who Hopes Photography and a tireless volunteer who helps find forever homes for shelter pets. Brooke takes thousands of original and whimsical pictures in an effort to find homes

Camille Marchand has been a teacher at Highland High School for only two years. During that time, she has proven to be one of those rare teachers who can reach not only the most gifted

Chase Morgan

According to his nominator, Chase Morgan is “the epitome of American youth and is a great example

Corey Dahle

Corey Dahle has been in the banking industry since 2003 and now serves as the Chief Experience Officer at Idaho Central Credit Union where he has worked since 2008. Corey has impeccable work ethic and is passionate about making a positive impact on his team members, members of the Credit Union, and Idaho commu-

nities. Corey holds a bachelor’s of Business Administration in Management from Colorado Mesa University. He was also Class President of Western CUNA Management School from 2012-2013. As Chief Experience Officer, Corey has been a major part of the growth and success of Idaho Central Credit Union. His contributions, along with those on his team, have helped ICCU be named the Best Place to Work in Idaho and the Best Performing Credit Union in the nation for the last four years. Corey

believes work should be fun. He looks for ways to recognize and reward team members and promotes a positive work culture. Outside of work, Corey is the coach of two youth Blackfoot Club Basketball AAU Teams and he also coaches youth baseball. Corey Rasmussen

In 2013 Corey Rasmussen took a leap of faith and opened his own business, Physical Therapy Specialists of Idaho. Since that time the 37 year old has used his extensive credentials and education to grow a thriving physical therapy practice that benefits the lives of many across our

region. Corey received his b a c h e l o r ’s degree in biology from Idaho State Un i v e r s i t y in 2002. He then graduated at the top of his class and received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from ISU in 2006. He then went to work for Rehab Authority in both Twin Falls and Pocatello until opening his own business. Corey is the only practicing Board Certified Orthopedic specialist in South East Idaho. He

is also a Certified Spine Manual Therapist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and Certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment. Corey is professionally affiliated with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the American Physical Therapy Association, and he is a board member of the Idaho Physical Therapy Association. In addition, Corey is an affiliate faculty with ISU and several other universities across the country. Through these affiliations, Corey provides internships to physical therapy students. “He feels very strongly 10

about helping and improving the lives of others,” his nominator said. “He is influenced by his fierce desire to be the best husband, father, friend, boss and therapist that he can possible be. Corey feels he owes this to his family, friends, co-workers, Pocatello community, profession of physical therapy and, of course God, who has blessed him with the capabilities to do what he does.” Corey is a long-time member of Rotary and is about to serve his second term on the board. He has also coached soccer for Pocatello Gate City Youth.


Diantha Smith

Diantha Smith is a well-published graduate instructor at Idaho State University with a passion for making rhetorical terms and concepts a little less scary. Diantha earned her

bachelor’s degree at Brigham Yo u n g University in Provo, U t a h where she studied elementary education. She went on to earn her master’s degree in literature and writing from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Today, she is a Ph.D candidate in English and the Teaching of English at Idaho State University, where she continues to give

back with her many academic talents. Diantha has a talent for teaching, which she shares both in the classroom and through online courses. In addition to being a graduate instructor at ISU, she is also an online instructor, for the Pathways Program - a low-cost, flexible way to pursue a university education for those who might not otherwise have access to a college degree. Diantha also taught several online and faceto-face courses while at Utah State University. Her research interests include Rhetoric

and Composition, English Language Learners, Technical and Professional Communication, online teaching, and Curriculum Design and Assessment. She has been honored with ISU’s Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award in 2016, and was named Graduate Instructor of the Year twice during her time at Utah State. Elaine Foster

With a deep passion and love for Idaho, Elaine Foster is proud to have been born and raised in Rexburg, and currently resides in Pocatello, where she works for the Sport Science and Physical Education (SSPE) department at Idaho State University as a clinical instructor. Her education is also rooted in the great state as

she attended Brigham Young University- Idaho for two years, then transferred to ISU where, in 2008, she earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education, emphasizing in exercise science. From 2009-2010, Elaine served as a graduate teaching assistant for the SSPE department, and earned her master’s degree in Physical EducationAthletic Administration. Following graduate school, Elaine, became the equipment coordina-

tor for the SSPE department at ISU. She served in this roll until July 2016. Along with her adoration for Idaho, Elaine has always been drawn toward sports, physical education, and health. From the time she was very young, Elaine knew that she always wanted to be around these professions. She has served within the field in many capacities including coach, referee, group fitness instructor, personal trainer, event coordinator, and physical education instructor. Mostly, Elaine loves teaching college students, and seeing the extreme growth and understand-

ing that these young adults attain through their education. In addition to building a career in physical education, Elaine has taken countless opportunities to engage in physical activity herself. With her husband, Jake, Elaine spends time backpacking in Idaho’s wilderness, cross country skiing, trail running, strength training, and playing a little racquetball and badminton. When not working or being physically active, Elaine and Jake enjoy going on scenic car rides, playing with their dog Aussie, hunting, visiting family and friends, and watching movies.

Erica Percy

Erica Percy, 39, is the director of membership sales for the Pocatello/Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce. However, that is only one of the many titles she holds. Erica is also a Clinique Cosmetic Manager at Her-

Erica’s business experience was refined as she accepted management roles in several big box stores in Utah. Gabe Allen

Gabe Allen is an insurance agent for First Choice Insurance who graduated with his finance degree in 2009 from Idaho State University. Soon after, he began selling insurance for a local credit union. Gabe grew his clientele several fold in the time he

was there. In 2014, Gabe joined Dewight Lee at First Choice Insurance to continue his career selling home and auto insurance. He continues to service many accounts all over southeastern Idaho and his thriving book of business continues to grow. “Gabe is well known for his remarkable customer service and bends over backwards to help his clients out,” his nomina-

tor said. “Gabe has been known to go above and beyond by doing things like bringing a can of gas to a client who was stranded on the roadway, towing a client’s broken down vehicle, and driving all over southeastern Idaho, and even to Boise just to meet his clients face to face.” Although Gabe keeps very busy with work, he has managed to balance this with his love for the outdoors. Gabe is an avid outdoorsman who hunts big game, upland game, waterfowl, and has a passion for fly fishing. He has been very influential in developing the Southeast Idaho

Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation. He currently serves as the chairman of the chapter. Gabe also grew up skiing at Pebble Creek, and enjoys skiing the backcountry. He has been teaching his two and four year old daughters to follow in his ski tracks and can often be seen with them in tow on the bunny hill. “Gabe is truly a great example of a dyed-in-thewool, born-and-raised Pocatello boy,” his nominator said. “He loves this community and his personal and professional contributions have and will continue to impact it in a positive way.”

At 31 years old, Jared Huckstep is the owner/operator of Hux Customs. The local gun store is located in Chubbuck and is a testament to Jared’s passion for his customers, the community and our Second Amendment rights.

He is the 2016 Wing Award Recipient for volunteer work from Idaho Counselors Association. In 2017 Jason was also honored as Business Partner of the Year from SEICAA. With his education and experience, Jason cocreated a specific treatment program called The Journey for adolescents dealing with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as deviant 14

Jim Burdick

Jim Burdick is using his talents in electrical engineering and his love of community to make southeast Idaho a better place. Jim’s lengthly professional accomplishments have helped Idaho Power better manage their ener-

gy loads, and subsequently helped Idahoans when they turn on the light switch at home. Jim is a graduate of Idaho State University where he majored in electrical engineering and graduated with a 3.91 G.P.A. Jim continued his education with a string of courses and seminars including a course on energy distribution planning, smart grid dynamic pricing and Harvard ManageMentor Training Courses.

At 33, Jim is a Transmission and Distribution Area Planning Engineer for Idaho Power. He designed and implemented a system using renewable energy sources and energy storage (solar tracking array with battery storage) in order to make renewable energy sources more reliable and to balance load. Jim was also selected to lead the Wood River Electrical Plan Update and oversee the Community Advisory Committee process for the long range electrical plan for the Wood River Valley area. John Eckert

We all have a teacher who we remember made a big impact on our lives. For many in Pocatello, that person is John Eckert. At 27 years old, John is a study hall teacher at Pocatello High School. Between 2013 and 2015, he was a crew leader at

Jon Armstrong

Jonathan Armstrong is a fiercely creative musician, composer, and educator living in Pocatello, where he serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at Idaho State University. Prior to moving to Idaho, Jonathan established a creative, and dynamic career in Los Angeles. He founded the critically ac-

claimed modern jazz quartet Slumgum, and the cutting edge electronic psychedelic group Pitch Like Masses. With these groups and others, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. As a composer, Jonathan has written music for film, dance, and theater. In addition, he composes contemporary classical music, and expansive meditative pieces that incorporate intonation and spectral stimulation.

Jonathan has also established a reputation as a daring bandleader with two album releases in his name. His debut, “Farewell”, released in 2013, was a five song suite for a 23 piece large ensemble. The album was widely praised by critics. Then, in November of 2016, he released the album “Burnt Hibiscus”, a project that combines surrealist poetry with traditional Hindustani music, arranged for a 10 piece chamber jazz ensemble. The album has received critical acclaim, most notably being listed as the no. 2 jazz release of 2016 by Dave Sumner of Bird is

Josiah Dahlstrom

Josiah Dahlstrom exemplifies selfless and never ending care to our area’s veterans. As an administrator at the Idaho State Veterans Home, Josiah has worked tirelessly to better the lives of the veterans he is surrounded by day after day. Among other ac-

complishments, he has spearheaded the creation of a Music and Memory program at the veterans home and helped bring the center’s emotional support dog “Glory” to the veterans. Josiah holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Idaho State

Karen is a leader in the sports/public relations fields and her work has been recognized nationally. At 38, Karen is a professor in the Department of Communication, Media, and Persuasion at Idaho State University. In that role, she not only challenges her students but also nurtures their

A very typical comment from her evaluations is, “The best professor I ever had!” She has gained a reputation for being challenging and compassionate – traits that students both need and respect. Students appreciate her ability to make the course concepts clear and relevant.” Karen holds a Ph.D from Louisiana State University in Rhetoric and Public Address. Shane Gleason

Shane Gleason believes in the power of academics to reach beyond the classroom and into the community. As an assistant professor in the department of Political Science at Idaho State University, Shane’s enthusiasm of this

field is contagious. “ I am committed to the idea that academics have multiple roles, that of teacher, researcher, and perhaps most importantly member of the community,” Shane said. “Each of these roles informs the other, and it is only by excelling at each that one can truly be well rounded.” In addition to class-

room work, Shane is a pre-law advisor and faculty advisor to the law club. Working with these students and expressing his excitement for education and law in general, Shane has substantially grown ISU’s pre-law program. At only 32 years old, his academic accomplishments and publications stretch pages long. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Cleveland State University and a Ph.D in political science from Southern Illinois University with an emphasis in public law and methodology. He has also written and published six 24

peer reviewed, academic publications and he has a book under consideration at the University of Chicago Press. Shane joined ISU in 2014 and, according to his nominator, has since helped his students achieve beyond what they think is possible. He has been a guest speaker for many organizations including Too Great for Hate, New Knowledge Adventures, The Rotary Club, Pocatello Inn of Courts, and the Bar Association. Three years ago, Tyson Daniels took a leap of faith and bought five businesses. The gamble, and a lot of hard work on Tyson’s part, paid off. Today, he is the owner of 10 businesses across southeast Idaho. Tyson owns Threshold Automotive Service, LLC

which operates Grease Monkey franchises, Monkey Shine and Bengal Car Wa s h e s , among other businesses. His franchise was selected as the Grease Monkey Franchisee of the year at the 2016 Grease Monkey conference. Tyson’s Rexburg Grease Monkey team also competed in and were selected as the Western Division winners of the Pit Crew challenge. Tyson is Pit Crew Certified through

Grease Monkey International. His employees exemplify the impact he has made in the southeast Idaho community. Tyson Kent

When the power goes out, Tyson Kent springs into action. As a Reliability Engineer for Idaho Power, Tyson makes sure the utility’s equipment can not only withstand outages but come back online quickly when an outage does happen. “Employed with Ida-

ho Power Company as the East Region Reliability Engineer, I have developed remarkable skills for solving complex problems while being able to quickly adapt in stressful working conditions,” Tyson explained. The 30-year-old Idaho State University graduate is tasked with covering a service territory spanning 3,400 square miles with 3,500 miles of a highly complex distribution sys-

tem. The task is both challenging and exciting for Tyson. His responsibilities cover a highly technical and diverse spectrum including, outage restoration, distribution system analysis, distribution protection, and large load Implementation. Tyson holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from ISU and is constantly taking continuing education courses. When he is not studying, or working through power outages, Tyson is active in the community he grew up in. He has participated in the Junior Achievement Career Fair, encouraging students to

set high goals and to lay out a plan to reach those goals. Tyson has also had the opportunity to assist two Engineering Senior Design teams at Idaho State University. He enjoys working with youth and helping them to reach their full potential. He has volunteered for several years as the Assistant Scout Master in the Boys Scouts of America, and enjoys being a role model and hopes to encourage and help others reach their career goals.

Vanessa Ballam

In the realm of acting at Idaho State University, Vanessa Ballam dominates the stage. At 38 years old, Vanessa has amassed a lifetime of stage acting accolades and accomplishments. She now uses her wealth of experience to educate

and mentor acting students at ISU. Vanessa is not only an assistant professor, but also the acting program head at the university’s Department of Theatre and Dance. In her five years at ISU, Vanessa has directed five mainstage productions, including “Guys and Dolls” and “James and the Giant Peach.” She has also directed the premiere production of an original play, and several stu29

dio productions. She has brought a number of guest artists to campus and has opened numerous opportunities for ISU students to broaden their horizons. Vanessa holds two bachelor’s degrees from Utah State University one in theatre education/ political science and another in liberal arts. Her acting credentials and experience span pages. She has directed 27 different productions across the United States and is the recipient of 11 different awards for her work, including two awards from NSAL for drama and musical theater. Vanessa has been a featured lecturer

in over 800 speaking engagements throughout the state of Utah and the West Coast including; Utah State University, BYU Idaho, Brigham Young University, Southern Utah University, Utah Valley University, Dixie College, Snow College. Her acting range includes not only stage production but also opera and musical theater. “I strive to help each student create their own repeatable acting process applicable to any text,” Vanessa says. “Though my teaching style in general is based in a variety of methodologies, I feel that the growth of the individual artist is paramount.”


Zack Heern

In less than two years, Dr. Zach Heern has helped to change Pocatello’s perspectives on the Middle East. At 38 years old, Zach is an assistant professor of history at Idaho State University. He earned his Master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Utah in Middle

East Studies. He also received his Bachelor’s degree in History from UCLA and has studied abroad in Egypt. Zach has written two books on the Middle East including “The Emergence of Modern Shi’ism: Islamic Reform in Iraq and Iran” - a book that has been featured in The Economist and the Los Angeles Times. He has also written dozens of papers and articles, and been featured

in several positive news stories in times of distress. Zach is professionally affiliated with the Middle East Studies Association, American Academy of Religion, International Association of Iranian Studies, Clerical Authority in Shi’i Islam Project, Idaho Humanities Council, and the Midwest Association for Middle East Studies. He has given talks through ISU’s Liberal Arts High and Humanities Cafe programs and he has also spoken to the Rotary Club, Idaho Falls City Club, and the Rotary Club of Salt Lake. Zach has published op-ed pieces and appeared in local, region-

al, and international publications and interviews. This past year, he started ISU’s Middle East Culture Association (MECA). The association’s mission is to promote education about Middle Eastern culture and build bridges. He regularly visits local high schools to give presentations on the Middle East and Middle East history and civilization. According to his nominator, Zach should be nominated for this award because of the change that he is bringing to ISU and Eastern Idaho.
