WHY CHEMICAL ENGINEERING?

Chemical Engineers are solving society’s biggest problems using their knowledge of what is happening at the molecular level. Our department mission is to advance knowledge, educate the next generation of engineers, and address the scientific and technological challenges of a diverse, global society.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS We are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in Biomolecular, Energy, Data Science, and Soft Materials Engineering. Here’s a small sample of recent accolades: The Bayles group is creating advective assemblers for 3D printing applications. This work will enable 3D printing to achieve new, complex structures by harnessing the power of interfacial flows.

The Blenner and Solomon groups are collaborating on a project to degrade plastic waste using microbial species found in the guts of mealworms. Their effort leverages biology as a solution for sustainable recycling.

The Furst group is applying microrheology, external fields, and laser tweezers to study colloidal interactions and assembly.

These studies will advance fundamental understanding of colloids while enabling new consumer products.

The Fromen and Kloxin groups are collaborating on a project to create tissue-engineered mimics of the human airway. Their work will advance understanding of disease and promote design of improved inhaled therapeutics.

The Jayaraman group is using molecular simulations to understand structure-function relationships of complex macromolecular fibrils. These studies will unlock new materials with unique properties.

The Liu group is developing a heat neutral membrane reactor for methane coupling reactions. Their research will help realize a range of high-value chemical products.

The Vlachos group is using density functional theory simulations to study the hydrogenation of furfural over FeN3 catalytic sites. These studies will enable biomass to be efficiently converted into new products.

FAQs 1. How do I get around?

While many students bring a car, the UD bus system connects campus locations throughout Newark. Beyond campus, the state DART system offers 55+ bus routes throughout Delaware! You can connect to the SEPTA line to head into Pennsylvania or use the local Amtrak station for further destinations up and down the East Coast.

2. Where’s the closest airport?

Wilmington Airport (20 minutes), Philadelphia International Airport (35 - 40 minutes), and Baltimore Washington International Airport (75 minutes) are the closest options for air travel.

3. Where’s the best coffee near campus?

There are several caffeination stations within walking distance to Main Street, including Little Goat Coffee Roasting Co., Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Brew Ha Ha!, and Drip Café.

4. Where can I shop when I’m missing cooking from home?

Delaware is home to diverse populations from all over the world. Students can find internationl ingredients at places like Apna Bazaar, Zahra Food Market, Hung Vuong Food Market, La Estrella Mexican Grocery, Kumasi African Market, and many others when they are craving their favorite meals!

5. Where do PhD graduates go after completing their degrees?

6. I don’t have a degree in Chemical Engineering, can I still succeed in the CBE graduate program?

Absolutely, yes! We have PhD students who have undergraduate degrees in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Engineering, to name a few, and are happy to work with you to achieve your goals. Our newly-revised modular Chemical Engineering graduate program curriculum is tailored to support your research interests while providing the essential foundation to succeed in your graduate career and beyond.

7. What do students do for fun?

The CBE Colburn Club offers student activities and events throughout the year.

For outdoor enthusiasts, be sure to check out the UD Outing Club and the scenic Delaware State Parks. Main Street offers tasty local restaurants, while wineries & breweries are just a stone’s throw away.

8. What’s all this about an annual festival dedicated to Bob Marley?

The People’s Festival in Wilmington, DE is an annual reggae festival held in honor of Bob Marley, who worked at the old Chrysler plant, current site of UD’s Star campus.

9. Tell me about the beaches nearby!

Casinos, nightlife, boardwalks, and the ocean, what more could you ask for?? The most popular is Rehoboth Beach where Joe Biden has a beach house.

10. Do you ever run into Joe Biden?

The President is a UD alumni and loves to stop by his alma mater!

STUDENT LIFE We’re a small state university with a big heart. Students enjoy a wide variety of intramural clubs and athletic activites in their down time, including scenic afternoons in Delaware State Parks, visits to Longwood Gardens, and short trips to Phildelphia, DC, or New York. Through it all, our campus services are designed to support you every step of the way.
