Meet Angela Feyeux, the eyes behind the ‘Humans of Hollywood’ photography project

Angela Feyeux is a vibrant citizen of Hollywood and the vivacious, gutsy founder of Humans of Hollywood, Florida. “When I moved to Hollywood in June of 2013, I knew no one in this town,” says Feyeux. “I was unemployed and kind of lonely, so I gave myself an assignment: Try to talk to 3 people a day and photograph them.” “I felt a need to connect.” So, Feyeux set out to integrate this “social experiment” into her daily activities. “I find people on Hollywood Boulevard, Home Depot, on the beach, the grocers, HomeGoods, wherever I am.” Her goal was not just to get candid shots, but to approach people and have a conversation, a connection, if they were open to it. “I would like to know how and why we all landed in Hollywood,” she says. “In my two years of doing this, only two people have said no. Everybody has a story to share.” Feyeux’s fascination lies in peoples’ attraction to this town. “Why do we all live here?” She asks, “What is it about Hollywood that attracts such an eclectic crowd?” Buddy says, “I’ve been here since 1959. Once you get used to it, it’s nice.” Maybe it’s the quaintness of the town, the beauty of the beach, or the charm of the many diverse and talented people that live here – just like Feyeux. A long time street photographer and art teacher, Feyeux is an organic artist. “My work feeds me in a way that nothing else can,” she says. Feyeux attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and recalls carrying her Nikon everywhere she went from the age of 19. That was the early seventies. “I went to the Bowery in my denim mini and clogs,” she recalls. “The only difference from photographing down in the Bowery, is I now use my IPhone 6. It takes better pictures than my old Nikon.” Yes, gone are the days of negatives and dark rooms, seemingly an “old world” craft that many will never come to appreciate. But that does not change Feyeux’s method or style. “I want to

capture the raw moment. You can’t clean it up. Otherwise it ruins the spontaneity.” Feyeux uses this recipe in her drawings and collages as well. “If it matches too much, I don’t want it. I don’t want to overwork the art.” Once Feyeux hooks up with Hollywood folks, she gets a story and photo and posts them on her colorful Facebook page, Humans of Hollywood, Florida. “It’s a taste of Hollywood,” she says. “I want to support the mom and pops, the town, the community-not the chains.” Feyeux invites everyone to ‘like’ and follow her page, Humans of Hollywood Florida. “I want other Humans to join, comment and enjoy one another, but please no derogatory remarks. And I would like to be a Human of Hollywood if I could ever be considered!” You can contact Feyeux by private message on her Facebook page or email her at: pentimento11@gmail.com.

Don Cotton’s story of transformation and hope continues to guide those experiencing homelessness BY COURTNEY BUTTERWORTH

TEEN CORRESPONDENT courtney.butterworth@ aquinas-sta.org

Don Cotton had hit rock bottom. He was homeless, on drugs, out of jail, and in prison. Most people would have given up, decided that there was nothing else they could do to get themselves out of this destructive cycle. Cotton, however, is not like most people. After serving his sentence in prison, Cotton went to the Miami Rescue Mission, where he remained for eighteen months, studying the Bible. Upon graduating from the mission, Cotton was hired by the very people who had helped him turn his life around. For the past ten years he has worked with the Miami Rescue Mission, starting out as a monitor. Nine promotions later, Cotton is now in charge of both the Hollywood and Pompano shelters. “It’s not a job for me.” said Cotton. “It’s a ministry for me, to be able to serve other people and it’s not about me. All the time I found out that my life wasn’t about me, it was about where my faith in God placed me to where I would be able to help others. You got people watching me saying, ‘If he could do it, I could do it.’” I was able to speak with Don Cotton, Program Supervisor for the Broward Outreach Centers of Hollywood and Pompano, about their shelter system and his personal transformation. HOLLYWOOD GAZETTE: How many people is the Broward Outreach Center (BOC) currently assisting? DON COTTON: In Hollywood we have a 128 bed facility. We have seven family units. Our bed availability comes through 211 [an emergency housing and social services hotline]. We send our availability out every morning and a task force will see the availability and send people for our program. We have an emergency shelter program, those are the ones that 211 sends us– about eighteen people a night. Pretty much they just want to shower, change clothes, eat, and go about their business the next day. Every day at 3:30 p.m. we pull the bed list of the referrals which 211 sent us. The task force, they send us twelve [people]…we have a capacity of thirty referrals a day. That’s pretty much what we can hold right now… we also have crisis beds where we can place one or two people. If we have any overflow room we use those as crisis beds. HG: How long, on average, have people 6

JUNE 2016

been experiencing homelessness before they come to BOC? DC: That is individualized – you might have some people who have been out there for four years, five years, six years, and then you might have some who have been out there a year or a month. The majority are anywhere between two to three months that they have been homeless. HG: What is the average amount of time people spend at BOC? DC: The emergency shelter hotline, 211, refers them for three nights, but they have to call each and every day… to get back on the list. The drug treatment center that we have here, is an average of about sixty days. HG: What are the different programs or services are offered for those experiencing homelessness? DC: We have our GED program, our life skills program, therapists on site, and assistance with day care. We have mentoring programs, what we call the Covergirls. [The Covergirls] come out and mentor our lady clients. People come in and donate hygiene products that we provide. HIV testing, job readiness, I can go on about all the services that we offer here but those are the majority that we offer. HG: How does an individual obtain emergency shelter at the Broward Outreach Center? Is it on a first come/ first served basis? DC: For emergency shelter they call 211. 211 would call them back and say ‘we got your referral so you…are on the referral list.’ If somebody just walks up at this time it would be difficult [to house them] because we don’t have the room. HG: Do there tend to be more families or individuals who come to the Broward Outreach Center? DC: It is more individuals, but we do have a large amount of families that come up. We get crisis calls and those are very hard because our units are filled all the time with families because we have 17 units total between Hollywood and Pompano. You might have a family of five, a family of six, and we can only house up to a family of five [in one unit]; in Pompano it is up to a family of four. It can get very difficult, especially for the kids because it is very hard on kids in a shelter. HG: The Huffington Post reported that in more than half of U.S. cities, it is illegal for a person experiencing homelessness to even sit on a sidewalk. How can things be changed to help those experiencing homelessness?

DC: My point of view is that I experienced homelessness. There were people that gave me compassion, the Miami Rescue Mission gave me compassion; they gave me hope. They helped me with restoration, but transformation, that was on me. HG: How did your transformation come about? DC: I applied the Word of God to my life. Areas I needed to work on, I applied the Word of God to my life. I had to be reconstructed, in faith they would say ‘born again’. I had to learn new ways of doing things because a lot of the people who were telling me things in my life, I would embrace those things and I believed those things, but they weren’t actually true. And when I was applying those things to my life, they weren’t right. They always made me end up in a shelter, on a street, in a jail, so I had to lose that. The reason I embraced those things was because people were telling me that they cared about me and that they wouldn’t lie to me. So, a lot of the things that had been poured into my life weren’t right so I had to be born again. I used Godly principles to restore me and rebuild me to a better man. HG: How was your faith strengthened? Did you start going to Church? DC: It was more than Church. I went to Church all my life, but I was just going to Church. You can go to Church and not get anything out of it. I always say that there if there is no application, there is no change. I went into the Miami Rescue Mission, an eighteen month program in Miami. It is a faith based program that the Broward Outreach Center operates under. I went there and studied the Word of God. We woke up and I didn’t go to watch the television, no newspapers, none of that, we just studied the Word of God and

applied it to our life, and transformation came into my life. There were certain things that I didn’t want to do anymore. It was a longer term program and it worked for me, I needed that. I needed somewhere where I could get focused and start working on changing my life. That’s what really touched my life, when I really accepted my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and I started applying the Word of God to my life. A light came on and I knew that the things that I was doing always ended me up in bad places so I knew that I had to listen to somebody and learn a new way and that way was my faith and following God. I am doing what I love to do. When I get up, I am happy to come here because I know that I am going to impact somebody’s life. HG: That is amazing that now you get to be a role model for so many people. DC: I always let people know that I am not exempt from a fall; I am just like everybody else. I always stand on this right here: “He who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” So, I continue to humble myself because any change that happened in me, it came from God. HG: What is the best way for people to help those experiencing homelessness and the Broward Outreach Center? DC: Well, first of all, they can come by, go through orientation and volunteer. Monetary gifts are fine because, just imagine, this center runs 365 days a year and it doesn’t stop. People are taking showers every night and the A/C stays on everyday. Also, if you get too big for your clothes and want to donate clothes, we use them right here; we give them to the clients. Kids clothes, any drives that they want to have: water drives, food drives, diaper drives, whatever drive! That would help, also. If the ladies want to be part of the Covergirls they can come and two days out of the month for an hour they can mentor a young lady and keep them encouraged. — Don Cotton truly is an inspiration to those struggling through homelessness. He also continues to be a role model to all with his story of perseverance and purpose. Even with all that he has gone through, he still wants to use his life to help others, and we should, too. Broward Outreach Center’s Hollywood location is at 2056 Scott St, Hollywood, FL 33020. To volunteer or donate to Broward Outreach Center, call (954) 926-7417.

MUNICIPAL NEWS

Broward considers “Ban the Box” ordinance Broward County may soon join other governments across the country and “ban the box.” The phrase refers to removing the checkbox on employment applications that ask if the person has a criminal record. “This is one area where the County can show leadership in terms of how we deal with folks who might have had some issues in the past who now want to live a full life and be productive. There are 70 million Americans who have had some issues with the law whether it be arrest or conviction,” said Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness who brought the issue forward. “We are lucky we have a progressive County Administrator, a progressive County Commission and a staff that is alert to the difficulties that people have gone through in the past,” said Mayor Marty Kiar. The proposed ordinance, if passed, would mean that Broward County government would not inquire about an applicant’s criminal history and would not ask for authorization to conduct a criminal

background check, until the person selected as a finalist for the job. “I think this is a good measure. This ordinance, if passed, means a person will never be asked about their background. I support this and I hope my fellow commissioners support this as well,” said Commissioner Mark Bogen, who co-sponsored the proposed ordinance. “I think the box needs to be banned on the front end. I have no issue with that

whatsoever. I believe in second and third chances and evening the playing field. But at some point in time there is a background check and that’s not eliminated from here,” said Commissioner Lois Wexler. “I would like to work on the language of this though, to ensure that the background check occurs before the very end of the process.” “I do think the simplest way to do this is to ban the box and require a background

check on every applicant. That’s a very simple solution,” said Commissioner Beam Furr. The proposal also means that Broward County would not advertise positions with a statement that an individual with a criminal record may not apply for a position, or that the County prohibits people with a criminal record from applying for a job. If an applicant is a finalist for a position and a background check reveals a criminal history, the person would be given an opportunity to respond and offer mitigating circumstances. The “Ban the Box” ordinance would not apply if in conflict with federal or state law and some positions would be exempt from the new hiring practice. Members of the public who wish to voice their opinions on the proposed ordinance can do so on June 14th at 2 p.m. at the Broward Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Room 422 in Fort Lauderdale.

Memorial Healthcare System joins Senator Eleanor Sobel, Rosenberg Family to advocate for brain tumor research Michael Howard Rosenberg lost his battle with brain cancer more than a year ago, but his legacy lives on, thanks to Florida State Senator Eleanor Sobel and his parents, Hollywood residents Leslie and Jordan Rosenberg. Earlier this year, the trio honored Michael’s memory with their efforts on behalf of Senate Resolution 1616, which officially named May “Brain Tumor Awareness Month in Florida.” The designation is important to raise awareness of the disease and the need to support research that could lead to a cure. “SR 1616 sought to honor the legacy of a true fighter, Michael Howard Rosenberg,” said Senator

Jordan, Jeffrey, Michael and Leslie Rosenberg

Eleanor Sobel (D-Hollywood). “Cancer impacts each of our lives and we need to continue Michael’s battle to find the cure.” More than 700,000 people in the United States are currently living with a brain tumor and 70,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. After receiving his own diagnosis, Rosenberg, then 22, worked tirelessly to raise awareness and money to support brain cancer research, inspiring countless people along the way. “While our son’s cancer journey ultimately had a heartbreaking ending, we remain grateful for the compassionate care Michael received from an amazing team of medical professionals at Memorial Healthcare System,” said Jordan

Rosenberg. “Drs. Atif Hussein, Linda Sternau, and Bruce Braffman, along with a team of neurologists, nurses, technologists, and therapists were critical parts of the ‘village’ that helped sustain our family.” Michael Rosenberg was initially diagnosed with a low-grade oligodendroglioma tumor, undergoing several surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation to try and stop the progression of the disease. He was a graduate of Stranahan High School’s medical magnet program, the University of Florida, and Nova Southeastern University’s Master of Biomedical Sciences program, and was a first-year student at NSU’s School of Osteopathic Medicine at the time of his passing.

Head Football Coach Jason Milgrom is proud of the team he is developing. “We have 21 players who have received college football scholarship offers from division one programs,” he said. “And we will see more offers during the fall season.” But the team faces some stiff competition. They will play Deerfield Beach, Flanagan and IMG Academy. Some of the leading players include Joshua Ali, Henry Colombi, Julius Ianella and Anthony Johnson.

Ends Meat opens in Downtown Hollywood BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Acclaimed South Florida food truck chef Kevin Dreifuss traded in his wheels for a stationary restaurant with the recent opening of Ends Meat Eatery, a hip bistro in Downtown Hollywood inspired by the evolution and combination of Northern California and South Florida cuisine. Since Ends Meat opened March 20 at 1910 Hollywood Blvd., diners have been raving about the exceptional food, wine, atmosphere and service at the new gastropub, which serves up trendy yet casual lunches, inventive seasonal dinner menus, craft beers and an impressive wine list. “The reviews have been great. Everybody’s been really happy with the menu items and wine list,” said Dreifuss, a chef for the past 20 years who owns Ends Meat Eatery with his wife Georgianna. After serving as a chef at several restaurants around the country, Dreifuss owned and operated the Pescados Unidos food truck for two and a half

years, during which time he participated in the popular Food Trucks at ArtsPark event held Mondays in Downtown Hollywood. Pescados Unidos was renowned for its fresh Latin-inspired seafood, and Dreifuss’ popular Fish Sausage was one of the featured dishes at the 2013 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival’s Trucks on Midtown’s Tracks. Dreifuss’ new venture, Ends Meat Eatery, occupies a 1,100-square-foot space accented by an assortment of table and floor lamps hanging upside down from the ceiling, and a 24-foot bar covered in pennies that the couple spent three days gluing in place. “The décor is eclectic. It’s very cool,” Dreifuss said. “It’s not like your cookie-cutter restaurant, by any means.” Like the ambiance, Ends Meat’s brunch, lunch and dinner menus, which change every month, are extremely creative. Brunch, served on Saturday and Sunday, features selections such as The Benedict (fried green tomato, poached egg, lump crabmeat and sauce Béarnaise) and The Savory (smoked pork belly, blackened shrimp, grits and Vermont cheddar), as well as a variety of add-ons like Duck

Fat Potatoes or Spanikopita. In addition to soup and salads, lunch offerings might include Lump Crab Taquitos with roasted poblano chili peppers, Mexican cheese, pico de gallo and avocado crèma; or Dreifuss’ famous House-Made Fish Sausage, consisting of mahi, mango and habanero sausage, with green papaya slaw, mango mustard and fresh potato chips. Among the changing dinner menu entrées are Jerk Chicken Roulade and

Rice with pigeon pea risotto and toasted coconut; Espellette Skirt Steak with chimichurri, fingerling potatoes and crispy onions; Crispy Duck Leg Cassoulet with pearl onions, white beans, baby carrots, chard, frisée salad and herbs; and King Trumpet Mushroom “Scallops” with farro, glazed spring vegetables, truffle mushroom jus and pickled shallots. Dinner starters include Spanish Octopus with chorizo, baby potato, frisée and sauce Romesco; and Fried Green Tomatoes with lump crabmeat, avocado, pickled watermelon rind and remoulade sauce. Raw oysters, half-shell clams and seasonal ceviche are served with apple mignonette and house cocktail sauce at lunch and dinner. Desserts include a variety of seasonal pies and cakes. Dreifuss said Ends Meat’s menu is “affordable and very competitive price-wise.” Dreifuss, who has lived in Hollywood with his wife and two children for three years, was drawn to the eclectic historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district when it came time to choose a location for his new restaurant. “Downtown Hollywood’s got a lot of character. There has been a lot of new investment in the area and more young professionals live in Downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods” he said. “And I like the fact that it’s historical. The historical aspect also attracts a lot of tourists that are staying on the beach.” Ends Meat Eatery is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday, 9 a.m. to midnight Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Mondays. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. For more information, call 954-3917400 or visit www.EndsMeat.com. Orders can be placed online for pickup or delivery. Catering services are also available.

Atelier3 serves memorable coffee and an artsy experience in Downtown Hollywood BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Just as satisfying and memorable as the delicious coffee beverages served up at Atelier3 is the overall experience this unique new Downtown Hollywood business offers. Atelier3, named for the French word for an artist’s studio or workshop, is a mélange of three different pursuits housed in a 2,500-square-foot space: a cool coffee shop with high-speed WiFi and a collection of antique books, a unique boutique and an arts venue that showcases live music and art and photography exhibitions. Leo Anato and his wife Maricel, who also founded an award-winning production company, Wild House Pictures, opened Atelier3 – or AT3 for short – Feb. 15 at 1901 Harrison St. Anato’s vision is “a place where everybody can come.” The décor is hip, funky and eclectic, but also welcoming. Anato, who studied architecture, was hands-on in

transforming a “raw” space to a warm, inviting place where people can enjoy coffee and a pastry in one of the supercomfy chairs or sofas in the “living room” area while reading a book, working on their laptop, meeting up with old friends or making new ones. “We’re always in a rush,” Anato said. “We connect when we’re sitting down, relaxing and having a warm cup of coffee.” He attributed AT3’s appeal to the ambiance, the attentive customer service and, of course, the coffee. Anato said friends and business associates have long raved about his coffee. He utilizes a painstaking and “more personal” classic process that

results in delicious quality coffee “made with love,” Anato said. “Yes, I sell coffee. My aim is to sell really good coffee.” AT3’s menu includes iced coffee, cappuccino and espresso, and Anato will add other coffee beverages depending on his customers’ interests. There also is an assortment of teas and pastries, and Anato hopes to add beer and wine to AT3’s offerings. The gift shop is Maricel Anato’s domain and features comfortable active and athletic wear such as yoga and running apparel, accessories and an eclectic selection of products from around the world. The arts aspect of AT3, like the coffee menu, will evolve over time with customer input. Right now, art, photography and live music are the focus. “We’re open to everything that makes sense and complements the ambiance of AT3,” Anato said. Anato said he and his wife are very happy to be doing business in Downtown Hollywood. “We love Downtown Hollywood. There are a lot of creative people opening businesses in the area,” Anato said. “And people in downtown need a space where they can sit down and relax, talk, create, listen to music and be able to chill.” AT3 is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 954-505-3843 or visit www.facebook. com/3atelier.

ART + CULTURE

Kenton Parker exhibit opens June 11 at Art and Culture Center/Hollywood Everything Counts in Small Amounts consists of intimately-scaled life-sized structures in which people of all ages can dream and exchange gestures of friendship. The gallery will become a landscape for contemplating friendship, sharing, and memory. A wooden treehouse made by the artist will invite children to climb into it, lay down, and view a video of the night sky. A flower shop filled with potted plants and gardening tools, just like ones you see by the side of the road, can be peered into. A quilt made by the artist’s mother from a drawing he made depicts a rolling, congenial landscape, and a painted starburst connects our personal experiences of nature with the infinite. Kenton Parker’s work is about setting a stage for innocence, for steadfast friendship, for sharing and helping, and for letting go and moving on. His tributes to friendship and first love take place in modestly scaled vernacular structures. In these structures, re-created in the gallery, Parker channels every child’s escapist fantasy of a hideaway, a special place

in which they can dream, be themselves, invite their favorite friends, and be close to nature. The gentle life-cycle of flowers and butterflies provides a mirror for the emotions and transitions of life, for the familiar dramas of being close and then moving apart. INTERACTIVE AREA In the interactive gallery, visitors will create greeting cards — one to keep and one to share with future gallery visitors. Handmade greeting cards that express simple, direct emotions are cultural

artifacts on the verge of obsolescence. Parker invites young and old alike to draw, add color, paint, and collage on a paper card, all in the service of wishing someone well. Friendship, love, good health, a beautiful day, deep dreams, and the slowing down to be part of nature happening all around us. DENTAL HEALTH UPDATE

Welcome to the New Age of Dentistry what will happen if we have to take them out. I consider them the standard of care when planning to place dental implants. We know exactly the quality and quantity of the patient’s bone and we can do a far better job for them with less trauma.

I mentioned in my previous writing, that the way I practice Dentistry today is very different from the way I practiced 20 years ago. I feel very fortunate to be able to learn and quickly adapt to the newer technologies that benefit our patients so much. Here are some of the technological advances that are completely changing the way we practice and that make the patients experience so much more tolerable: QUIETER DRILLS: Prayers have been answered. One of the most terrifying sounds a person can experience is the horrible sound of the dental drill. This is the stuff nightmares are made of and for years patients have asked - why can’t the make a quit drill? We now have electric drills as opposed to the traditional air driven drill. The reduction in noise and especially in pitch is amazing. Patients feel a lot more comfortable knowing they don’t have to hear that dreaded turbine noise. DIGITAL X-RAYS: I remember the days when we had to take an x-ray and manually develop them by immersing the film in stinky solutions in a dark room. Since we could not see what we were doing, things often went wrong and we had to retake a lot of x-rays. The films were not as sensitive to the x-rays and thus the exposure time (meaning radiation) to the patient was a lot higher. We had to read the films in a negatoscope (fluorescent light) and one had to have really good eyesight to be able to diagnose anything. We now have digital films that are extremely sensitive

to radiation and that means a tremendous reduction in patient exposure. We can see the images in a computer screen, zoom as much as we can and use all sorts of software to add contrast and measure things. Patients can also see their x-rays in a TV screen and understand what is going on. CBCT (CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY): This is a 3D (three dimensional) X-ray that we can take in the office. It’s like a CT scan but with as little radiation as a Panoramic x-ray (which equals about 1 or 2 weeks of natural background radiation, that’s the amount of radiation a person receives just by living on earth). With the 3D scans, we can see things in all different angles and we are no longer limited by the two dimensional view of an x-ray film. 3D means more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. We don’t have to guess what is wrong with a root canal or perform exploratory surgeries. We can clearly see the root of wisdom teeth and predict

ELECTRONIC APEX LOCATORS: The success of a root canal treatment depends on being able to completely seal the orifice at the end of the root where the nerve comes into the tooth. For years, we had to guess where this point was. We had to place an instrument inside the tooth and take a regular x-ray and we had to be magicians in order to interpret the film. The x-ray depending on the angle distorted a lot and the two dimensions of the x-ray made it impossible to distinguish between roots. We also had to take a lot of x-rays because they usually came out wrong. Now we have an instrument that simply beeps when we reach this point and we know exactly how long the canal is. Results are much better and much more predictable, not to mention virtually eliminating the need for x-rays and radiation. CAD/CAM TECHNOLOGY: Our most recent acquisition is the CEREC system. I am completely amazed by this incredible technology. We are now able to take optical impressions of the teeth. Whoever has had to have a crown made or impressions for In-

visalign, has had to endure the torture of having the goopy impression material in their mouths for up to 6 minutes. If the patient happens to be a gagger, the experience can equal torture by water boarding. Now we just take a few pictures of the teeth with a small camera and the software builds the models.

Have a question for Dr. Sperling? E-mail to: info@ dentalcenterofhollywood.com Today’s technology is unbelievable and has made Dentistry a lot more tolerable for the patient and more fun for us. Our philosophy however has remained the same. The value and use of sound fundamentals cannot be replaced and having the right foundation, the right training and the right attitude is something that we keep constant and very high. We continue to devote our efforts to deliver high quality dentistry in a caring environment, to care for people, not just teeth.

We care for people, not just teeth. Welcome Exam + X-rays $89 Regular value of $292. Offer includes your exam (D0150), consultation, necessary x-rays (D0330) and an oral cancer screening. Offer good for new patients.

Thanks team! - Dan Sweeney Dr. Sperling and his professional, efficient, and BEAUTIFUL staff have been tending to my teeth for YEARS. They’re why I fly from New York to Hollywood for my appointments. They have always given me the very best dental care and I love them for it. Highest possible recommendation. - James Bullard

Commission grants approval for new developments in Hillcrest A new housing development CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com is coming to Hollywood's Hillcrest community. During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission unanimously approved a plan that will allow a developer to build 645 homes on two golf courses in Hillcrest. The entire project will cost $31 million to build. There will be a 494 home project on what was an 18 hole golf course. This will be a gated community and will feature 256 townhouses and 238 single homes. There will be another gated community on a former nine hole golf course with 151 homes. There will be 84 townhouses and 67 single homes. The developer of the project will put in lakes, ponds and walking paths throughout both housing areas. During the discussion, members of the commission said they were glad that a new development was coming to Hollywood. There was mention of the fact that the golf courses had provided fun and social opportunities. Members of the Commission said they believe these new developments will increase property values in the area. There was concern that with more people moving into the area, traffic congestion would increase. Commissioner Linda Sherwood said she was glad the developer taken the time to meet with Hillcrest residents to discuss the new development.

Silverman joined the temple in 1994 and helped it grow on and off for more than 20 years. “It’s a special place,” Silverman said. “We are a close-knit, multi-generational congregation of 300 families and offer something for every step of the Lifecycle.” The Lifecycle includes Birth/Brit Mila/Baby Naming; B’nai Mitzvah; Wedding; Death/Burial/Shiva. Dr. Gideon Goldenholz became the spiritual leader of the Temple Sinai family in 2006 and continues to serve the local Conservative needs of the community. “We are a warm, accepting family,” said Rabbi Goldenholz said. “We’re a very diverse group with varied origins and cultures, but there is a really cool openness and acceptance here. FOR GOODNESS SAKE

Hollywood Jaycees celebrate 50th anniversary of Jaycee Hall The Greater Hollywood Jaycees and the Hollywood Jaycees Foundation celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Jaycee Hall, on Saturday, May 21, 2016. The celebration included a ribbon cutting ceremony, cocktail reception, and remembrances of what kind of impact Jaycee Hall has had through the years, on the Jaycees’ efforts to serve the community. The Greater Hollywood Jaycees has been on the forefront of community service, as well as personal and professional growth. Over the years, the Chapter has played an instrumental role in starting of the Broward County Fair, and developing Perry Airport and several local parks. Member efforts have benefitted countless charitable organizations, underprivileged families, and children. The Anniversary Celebration marked the kickoff of an ambitious $30,000 capital improvement campaign. The monies raised are needed for projects such as filling and grading the currently-sinking property behind the hall, complete bathroom renovations, and kitchen upgrades. Their goal is to make Jaycee Hall into a facility the entire community can be proud of.

May 21st was designated “Jaycee Hall Day” and Comissioner Kevin Biederman read the proclamation with the assistance of Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez, Commissioner Assef, Commissioner Blattner, and Commissioner Sherwood to a crowd of Past Presidents of the Hollywood Jaycees, Senators from the Florida JCI Senate, several community leaders and plenty of friends of the Hollywood Jaycees. The Jaycee hall is used for all types of events such as Weddings, Sweet 16, Quinces and Baby Showers. Their non-profit rentals include the weekly meeting of Narcotics Anonymous, Weekly meeting of the Girl Scouts, monthly meeting for the Broward County fair…just to name a few. Debra Gronvold states “because of all of these events we need to keep up with the modernizing and upkeep of our building…after 50 years it deserves some TLC!” and that is why we reached out to our community by having our “Jaycee Hall Celebrates 50 years!” event. Proceeds from ad sales, ticket sales and sponsorships helped to build up funds to do such needed improvements. For more information, contact the Jaycee Hall at (954) 981-4378.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Hollywood Commission considers changing Confederate street names

Should BY DAVID VOLZ Hollywood CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com streets named after leaders of the Confederacy be changed? A number of residents believe so and the Hollywood Commission is taking a look at this issue. During a recent meeting, members of the Commission discussed the matter and some of the difficulties and problems that might arise if street names were changed. A group of residents have said they want the streets named after Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee, John Hood and Nathan Bedford Forrest changed. Some people believe those streets should be renamed after leaders from the Civil rights movement. Of special concern is the street named after Nathan Bedford Forrest. He is considered the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, an organization that has long terrorized African Americans. Mayor Peter Bober said he believes the residents of the streets in question should be consulted on how they feel about their street names. “We should talk the people who live on these streets and ask them how they feel about their street names. They should know are considering changing the names of the streets they live on,” said Bober. “If we change the names of the streets, we will be doing so because it is the moral thing to do. I understand how African Americans feel about this.” Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez said that many people, even people who live on the streets in question, don’t know about the people who have streets named after them. He suggested that one letter be removed from Forrest and that the street be renamed Forest Street. He believes this would make it easier for

home and business owners on the street. Commissioner Linda Sherwood asked fellow commissioners if it would be possible to just change the names of the streets in the Liberia neighborhood. This is a historically African American neighborhood. Commissioner Patricia Asseff said it would not be right to change the street names in one neighborhood. She believes if a change to a street sign is to be made, it should be made from one side of Hollywood to the other side. She believes the residents on those streets should be allowed to decide if the names should be changed. Commissioner Traci Callari said she is concerned that if the names of the streets are changed, an important historical reminder will be lost. She believes it is important that people remember unpleasant times in U.S. history like slavery even though this topic is very sensitive. Commissioner Dick Blattner said he understands the feelings of residents who want the street names changed and would like to make the process easier and less expensive. During public comments, Benjamin Israel, a leader in the effort to get the names of the signs changed focused on changing the name of Forrest Street. “This should not be considered a local racial issue. Forrest was a sociopath who founded the Ku Klux Klan,” he said. Concerns have been raised about the cost of renaming the streets and the inconvenience it would cause residents who live on those streets because they would have to change the names on important documents. Also, there would be issues involving the U.S. Post Office if the street names were to be changed.

fun, free and adventurous to do with the family this fall? Consider participating in Hollywood's second annual city-wide scavenger hunt. Organized by Hollywood Gazette, this tried-and-true activity works with smart phone technology to track missions you complete for points and prizes. Hundreds of missions will lead participants to discover a diverse sampling of all Hollywood has to offer. Participants can expect to learn about the history of Hollywood and will discover art, culture and natural beauty throughout the city. Participation is free and only a smart phone is needed to play. The majority of the missions require no cost or a nominal cost to complete. "If a monetary consideration is involved in completing a mission, we work with the partnering organization to get the cost below $10," said Tina Stiles, Associate Publisher of Hollywood Gazette. While most participants have said they are only playing for the fun of it, the top three teams will be awarded prize packages: $500 for the top team; $150 for second place and $75 for third plus a bundle of goodies from community partners. This year's hunt coordinator is Zoe Dekeles, a former hunt participant and fan. Dekeles has been hard at work creating new missions this year based

on her personal experience with the hunt. The Dekeles family participated in the past two scavenger hunts and was a finalist each time. This year, a community kick-off party will be held at the Hollywood Jaycee Hall the week of the hunt where competitors can meet, mingle and strategize. ELECTION NEWS

Hollywood Election 2016 update; qualifying period runs from June 6-24 JOSEPH MARSHALL EDITORIAL INTERN

As November draws nearer, the people of Hollywood find themselves faced not only with a presidential election, but with local elections as well. The vote to choose the mayor and the commissioners of Districts 2, 4, and 6 will be held on Nov. 8, the day of the national election. Additionally, a special election will be held for the unexpired District 1 seat on the same day, as Commissioner Patricia Asseff resigned in November of last year to run for mayor. As of May 20th, six candidates for mayor have been announced but only four remain: Patricia Asseff, Joshua Levy, Jay Arthur Schorr and Eleanor Sobel. Four residents have thrown their hats in the ring for the District 1 seat, two for District 2, two for the District 4 seat, and three for the District 6

seat. Itzack Feldman, who had initially began campaigning for mayor recently switched to run for the District 1 Commission seat. Feldman, a vocal critic of the current commission, hopes to gain access to the parts of Hollywood’s municipal departments he believes he has been blocked from. Having lived overseas and served for three years in the Israeli Navy, he intends to make improvements to the city as

commissioner. “Now I want to serve the people of Hollywood,” he said. For those who aren’t content to simply vote, there’s also the option of running for office, and it’s still possible to run for this year’s election. The candidate qualifying period runs from noon June 20 through noon June 24, with qualifying papers to be accepted beginning June 6. In order to run one must be a registered voter and a resident of the district they’re

seeking election in for at least six months before the qualifying period. “All qualifying fees and paperwork must be received and complete by noon, June 24, 2016, for a candidate to be qualified,” states Kristi Reid Bronson, Chief Bureau of Election Records. “To ensure that the qualifying items are timely submitted, a candidate or someone on his or her behalf should hand-deliver directly to the Division or use a commercial express courier delivery service that delivers directly to the Division.” Find a current list of Hollywood candidates listed on the city’s web site here. Residents considering filing for candidacy can find forms here: http:// dos.myflorida.com/elections/formspublications/forms/ David Volz contributed to this report.
