Hollywood beachfront resorts given go-ahead for food and drink service on the beach You now have the opportunity to CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com eat and drink at the beach in front of the City’s largest beachfront hotels. The Commission recently agreed to a one-year pilot program allowing food and beverage sales on the beach in front of beach resort hotels with 100 or more rooms for property boundaries abutting the beach or Broadwalk. The hotels involved include Margaritaville, Hollywood Beach Marriott and the Diplomat Resort. BY DAVID VOLZ

Food and beverage service will be available to resort hotel guests, including those who rent cabanas within the service area. Payment for the items must be made with cash or credit card, or by providing a room number or

state and local licenses to confirm their ability to serve food and beverages along with alcoholic beverages. Eventually, this program may be extended to smaller hotels on Hollywood’s beaches.

HOT IN HOLLYWOOD

10 YELP-WORTHY HOT SPOTS IN HOLLYWOOD BY JOSEPH MARSHALL CORRESPONDENT

Hollywood is host to a place for every palate. Whether it’s because you forgot to buy groceries, burned your dinner, need someplace to take a date, or just want to get out of the house after binge watching four seasons of a TV show on Netflix without once leaving your couch, sometimes you just need a place to sit down and eat. To make life easy, we compiled a list of ten of the highest rated restaurants on Yelp in the Hollywood area, making sure to factor in diversity in the locations, price ranges, and foods offered at the restaurants for the sake of variety. 1. The highest rated restaurant in Hollywood by far was the J28 Sandwich Bar, which after 310 reviews is sitting pretty with a five-star rating. The menu offers “Peruvian inspired” hot and cold sandwiches, quinoa bowls, and salads. Placed in the mid-price range for a typical meal ($11-30) the restaurant is pretty affordable, and located in the Downtown Hollywood area it’s perfectly situated if you want to walk around and window shop after your meal. The restaurant’s hours usually see it close at either 8:00 (Tue, Wed, Thu, Sun) or 9:00 PM (Fri, Sat) depending on the day, although it is closed on Mondays. (1854 N Young Cir. Hollywood, FL 33020) 2. Also located in the Downtown Hollywood area, Parrot Coffee is the second highest Yelp-rated restaurant in Hollywood, also sporting five-stars. It specializes in breakfast and lunch foods, and its bread is made daily at a local bakery. Placed in the low-price range of less than $10, popping in for a quick salad, omelet, sandwich, or coffee probably won’t burn too big of a hole in

your wallet. Parrot Coffee is open until 6:00 PM on weekdays, 5:00 PM on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays. (1917B Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, FL 33020) 3. Located on Johnson St. by the Hollywood Broadwalk, the third highest Yelp-rated restaurant in Hollywood is Les Artistes Café & Sandwicherie. Another five-star restaurant, Les Artistes offers a wide range of salads and sandwiches, and additionally, several crepes and a savory lunch crepe. Like Parrot Coffee, Les Artistes Café & Sandwicherie is placed in the low-price range of less than $10 spent during a typical visit. Les Artistes is open daily from 9:00 to 5:00, making it the perfect place to stop for a quick breakfast or lunch while on break from work. (313 Johnson St. Hollywood, FL 33019) 4. The Little Sugars has secured a sweet spot on Yelp with the fourth highest rated Hollywood restaurant, the third highest rated in the Downtown Hollywood area, and yet another five-star rated establishment. Open for breakfast and lunch, indulge your sweet tooth with one of their freshly-baked cookies, pies or sweet treats paired with a perfectly perked cup of coffee. It’s placed in the mid-price range of $1130, and open until 5 PM on weekdays, 2 PM on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays. (2028 Harrison St. Hollywood, FL 33020) 5. The first few entries have skewed towards cafés, but for those who have a craving for seafood the highest-rated such restaurant in Hollywood is Ends Meat. Ends Meat is in the mid-price range of $11-30, and offers seafood-centric appetizers and entrees, as well as non-seafood options for those who don’t have a taste for the

only open on Saturday and Sunday, where they start serving at 10:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM. (1940 N 30th Rd. Hollywood, FL 33021)

ocean. Ends Meat’s hours of operation vary, open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11AM until 3 PM, lunch from Monday-Friday from 11 AM until 3PM, dinner on such days from 5 through 11 PM, and on Sundays from 5 to 9 PM. (1910 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, FL 33020) 6. For fancier dining on the waterfront, the highest rated restaurant on Yelp (four stars) is the appropriately named GG’s Waterfront Bar & Grill, located on the Intercoastal. A bit pricier than previous entries on our list (#$41-60), GG’s offers brunch, lunch, and dinner, with a variety of pastas, salads, fish, a raw bar and more, as well as an extensive wine menu. The restaurant is open until 11:00 PM most nights, but stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. (606 N Ocean Dr. Hollywood, FL 33019) 7. For those who are looking for something to satisfy their vegetarian or vegan palette, there’s Atlas MeatFree Delicatessen, the fifth highestrated restaurant in Hollywood. Located at the Yellow Green Farmers Market, Atlas offers vegan alternatives to classic deli sandwiches, and in the low-price range (less than $10, just as a reminder) it’s both an inexpensive lunch and a healthier alternative to red meat and dairy. One catch, however: Atlas is

8. The second-highest rated seafood restaurant (and the fourth-highest rated overall in Downtown Hollywood) is Runas Peruvian Cuisine. It’s placed in the mid-price range ($11-30, you know the drill) and offers a selection of soups, appetizers, and entrees. Runas is open until 10:00 on most nights, except for Fridays and Saturdays where it remains open until 11:30, making it a great choice for a nice Friday-night dinner. (219 N 21 Ave. Hollywood, FL 33020) 9. The second highest-rated Italian restaurant in Hollywood is Vannucchi Brothers, which also conveniently delivers for those whose unwillingness to leave their house outweighs their hunger. Vannucchi Brothers specializes in pizza but also offers a wide selection of gourmet salads, sandwiches, and pasta dishes, as well as vegan entrees for those whose tastes are meat and dairy-free. NEW DEVELOPMENTS

City moves forward on affordable senior housing project The Hollywood CommisCORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com sion agreed at a recent meeting to a resolution to execute a sale agreement between Pinnacle at Peacefield and the City of Hollywood. Pinnacle was unsuccessful in winning an allocation of tax credits, which were needed to fund the redevelopment project it proposed for the site earlier this year. So, the city has now agreed to provide a local government loan contribution not to exceed $578,000 to keep the project moving forward. The Miami-based developer has agreed to build at minimum 100 affordable senior citizen rental housing units on Adams Street for people age 55 and older. The purchase agreement includes a reverter clause. In 65 years, the property will revert back to Hollywood, including any improvements made to the property. The City and Pinnacle Housing Group reached the purchase agreement in November of last year on about 5.5 acres of land on Adams Street between South 24th Avenue and South Dixie Highway owned by the City of Hollywood and the BY DAVID VOLZ

Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). According to the agreement, the City property was purchased for $1.2 million and the CRA property was purchased for $924,500. The total expenditure is about $2.1 million. "Our goal is for synergistic development that balances community needs, policy goals and economic viability," city manager Wazir Ishmael said of the project in his weekly report earlier this year. Ten percent of these units will be set aside for extremely low-income residents.

About the Project Pinnacle at Peacefield is the culmination of a strategic partnership and community consensus process 15 years in the making, originated by the City of Hollywood, The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency, Pinnacle Housing Group and Local community stakeholders. The outcome will be 100 units of senior housing, in addition to a future phase that will contain community facilities within a strategic redevelopment area in the City of Hollywood.

Pinnacle Housing Group was selected for the venture as the result of a Public/Private Partnership ("P3") proposal submitted to the City of Hollywood under Section 287.05712, Florida Statues, which took effect on July 1, 2013 and permits private entities to make unsolicited proposals to local governments to develop publicly owned land to fulfill an essential public purpose. Pinnacle was selected as the Developer (with Professional Management, Inc. as Pinnacle's property manager) by the Hollywood City Commission and its CRA Board on November 3, 2015. Pinnacle is no stranger to public/private part-

nerships in developing affordable rental housing that is aligned with or expressly stated as part of a local revitalization plan. Broward County Housing Authority (BCHA), the City of Hollywood and Pinnacle collaborated to transform the existing Crystal Lake public housing project in the City of Hollywood into a new affordable residential community offering a choice of housing options and quality amenities. BCHA determined that the existing Crystal Lake development was functionally inadequate, obsolete and isolated from the surrounding community.

artistic forms. McArthur High alumna Sheleessa Constantine created the club in 2014 as a way to bring awareness to key social issues through the performance arts. “We love to share our talents with the community,” said Sarah Deme-

trius, a club leader. The high-energy club has a faculty adviser and has visited locations off campus to give performances, such as at events for low-income children, in addition to putting on presentations for school events such as lunchtime pep rallies.

Anyone who wants to learn more about artistic expression is welcome to join. Jasmine Masere, also a leader in Express the Arts, said, “We are like a family. We help people develop leadership skills and we love to perform.”

Members of the Hollywood Academy of Arts and Science Drone Ninjas participated. The competition features middle and high school students showcasing their drone-flying skills, in an effort to get them excited and learning more about science, technology, engineering and math. A group of students from Apollo Middle School also participated, under the club known as Team Dronado. “We have been practicing for this competition five days a week. Drones are part of a growing industry and they offer many opportunities for young people. One can get a commercial drone license at age 16, and many people are now developing skills in drone photography – for example, drones are now used to photograph real estate from the air. Drones already have a place in science and agriculture, and eventually they may be used to haul freight and do more extensive aerial research.

ART AND ENTERTAINMENT

A&E in your city KENT WALLACE'S 'B-SCENE'

BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT As this year wraps and the next blooms, I’m going to engage in a bit of self-indulgence—one of those year in review exercises of pleasant reminisce… 2016 had me hosting no less than 4 Art Extravaganzas including events featuring legendary jazz saxophonist Richie Cole and legendary drag queen Misty Eyez. Regarding Richie Cole, the Daniel Pontet painting created the night of the event will be the cover of the March 2017 release for Cole’s upcoming CD. The past year found me writing and performing songs with Hollywood’s Artist in Residence Larry Joe Miller. As to the aforementioned Daniel Pontet—we are working on a book project (he will illustrate). And if music and literature weren’t enough, I’ve embarked on a film project with Leo and Maricel Anato (co-owners of Atelier 3 and Wild House Productions). We hope to have this Hollywoodcentric indie flick wrapped up by the end of this year! Needless to say I’m honored to have been offered a column in the Hollywood Gazette (hardcopy and web); thereby allowing another platform for my CRA sponsored blog: bscene.tumbler. com This past year found new art galleries sprouting and established ones growing (L/Mercado Studio Collective, Doris White, Gallery 2014, Arts & Culture Center, The Gallery at Arts Park, Hollywood Hot Glass and Larry Joe Miller Studio).

Hollywood preens monthly with the ever growing Art Walk (3rd Saturday of every month) and The Dream Car Classic (a Cobra Joe Production on the 1st Sunday of every month). Which brings me to a point— we could use more street closure events like the freshly minted Artisan Market and the aforementioned Dream Car Classic. Consistent vibrancy is the life blood of scene making. Frankly, I’d like to see more artists issued licenses to paint and perform around town on a regular basis—for just that reason… What a rush watching murals pop up like spring flowers on the walls all over our downtown cor-

ridor (special thanks to Jill Weisberg). Credit critically acclaimed dining options for putting Downtown Hollywood on the culinary map and allowing local foodies bragging rights (Ends Meat, SASA Café Italiano, American English Kitchen & Bar, Runas, Tipsy Boar—to name a few). We still have the hippesthappeningest Beach/Broadwalk anywhere. We also have means of affordable access via the Hollywood Trolley (operating 7-Days a week—a mere dollar each way). Would be remiss not to mention the plethora of drinking spots for the common folk (Octopus, G’s Place, PRL and American Legion

Post 92). Thanks to Mauro’s Pizza for providing that wee-hour slice of life (extra cheese and mushroom for me). The same love to GoBistro for a similar reason—only in this case, late night sushi and Ramen. Like Tattoo excitedly screamed to Mr. Roarke on the television show Fantasy Island, “The crane boss, the crane!” We have growth sprouting where dereliction and deterioration once dwelled—an exciting sight for sore eyes indeed. And finally, a special thanks to my best bud, artist Cindy Podgorski for all the loving and lively times. Happy New Year Hollywood…

Hollywood residents encouraged to weigh in on use of federal funds in FY 2017-2018

The Community Development Advisory Board (CDAB) is holding a public hearing 6:30 p.m. Jan. 11 at City Hall, Room 215, to seek citizen input regarding Fiscal Year 2017-18 funding needs. Residents can voice their opinions at the hearing regarding community and economic development priorities, needs, and specific objectives proposed to be addressed with federal funds expected to be available during FY 2017-18. The Community Development Division encourages all interested agencies, groups and individuals to attend. “In past years, the community has provided input regarding the use of funding for a multitude of needs including, but not limited to, promoting neighborhood revitalization and education, creating economic development partnerships with private entities, supporting homeless prevention and other social service programs,” said Clay Milan, Community Development Division Manager. “Comments from the community are welcomed and encouraged.” The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a range of unique community development needs. The City of Hollywood uses federal funding for a multitude of programs, including housing rehabilitation, disaster mitigation and special projects, as well as funding public service agencies that provide critical services for Hollywood residents. Local non-profit agencies have received funding to support services such as rental subsidy assistance, case management, wrap-around services, including job readiness training and employment referrals, budgeting and decision-making skills, case-specific life-skills training and purchase of work equipment (tools, footwear, uniforms). Additionally, vocational tuition, textbooks and supplies, exam fees and recertification for courses including home health aide, certified nursing assistant, welding, culinary arts, business administration and others. Free after-school tutoring in reading, math and science, in-school tutoring and mentoring, childcare scholarships and other services have also been funded. Agencies interested in submitting an application for funding can find information on the City’s website at www. hollywoodfl.org under the Grants section of Community Development. The grant application will be available online February 1, 2017. Written comments regarding priority needs can be submitted to the Community Development Division at 2600 Hollywood Blvd., Room 203, Hollywood, FL 33020 or via electronic mail to dbiederman@ 18

Marcum LLP chosen to audit Hollywood The Hollywood City Commission CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com agreed during a recent meeting to rank Marcum LLP as No. 1 to provide required financial auditing services over three years for a cost not to exceed $695,000. In November, the Commission had approved the Evaluation Committee’s recommendation to pursue a contract with RSM US LLP, the top-ranked firm for financial auditing services. Following the swearing-in of the newly configured commission, Commissioner Kevin Biederman asked to reconsider his vote and bring the matter back to the new commission for further consideration. Presentations from auditing firms were made during the meeting; the commission then ranked the firms and Marcum rose to the top of the list. In other business, Commissioner Traci Callari was appointed by the Commission to serve as the City’s Vice Mayor for the coming year.

One-on-one Personalized Service Protect your investment with a Title Search and Title Insurance What is Title Insurance?

Title insurance is a policy used by homebuyers and lenders for protection against back taxes, undisclosed liens, legal judgments, forgeries, fraud and a host of other potential legal/financial problems that can arise when purchasing or refinancing property. How much does Title Insurance cost? The one-time premium is directly related to the value of your home. Typically, it is less expensive than your annual auto insurance. It is a one-time only expense, paid when you purchase your home. Yet it continues to provide complete coverage for as long as you, or your heirs, own the property.

FOR GOODNESS SAKE

14-year old Hollywood resident raises awareness and funds for ALS non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Goldsmith lost her ability to walk after its removal. With cancer beat, she continues her battle. But this time her mission is to walk again and overcome her spinal cord injury. Goldsmith’s parents have been crowd funding from the community to pay for therapy for the past couple of years. “It is so hard to ask for help, but this is for our child and there is no place for embarrassment, so until she is walking or we have enough to cover therapy on our own, we are forced to continue to bother our friends,” shares the Goldsmith family on the You Caring fundraiser page.

Ahava Greenbaum is an impressive young lady. The 14-year-old Hollywood resident has completed over 600 volunteer hours in the last year working with a variety organizations and throughout her last school year at special events. Over the last 2 years, Greenbaum has volunteered as a counselor for local summer and winter camps and has pioneered the first Wheels & Waves event with her mom and basketball coach to raise awareness and funding for special needs kids. They’ve partnered with the Special Olympics doing swim competitions, and simultaneously helped create awareness for spinal cord injuries with wheelchair basketball tournaments. Presently, Greenbaum is in 9th Grade at David Posnack Paul & Maggie Fischer High School where she plays basketball on a traveling girls’ team called ‘Mo Steel’, a Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center basketball program for highly-skilled athletes who are selected by invitation or a series of try-outs done at the beginning of the training season. “When Coach Jeff Fogel nominated me for a basketball scholarship from the Marc Sutton “Player for Life” Scholarship Fund to play on Mo-Steel, I was very moved,” shares Greenbaum. The scholarship’s namesake, Marc Sutton passed away when he was 9 years old and was a preschool friend of Greenbaum’s. It was shortly after Greenbaum was nominated that she discovered Fogel had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s Disease, resulting in his inability to use his arms and legs. Regardless of ‘Coach Jeff’ not having the use of his arms or legs and being confined to a wheelchair, he coached Mo Steel to winning championships. Greenbaum credits her chance to play basketball and become a key player on the team to Coach Jeff’s belief in her. “Coach Jeff inspired me to pursue my dreams, so as a way to give back, I wanted to do something to make a difference for others,” shares Greenbaum. “So, from my love of sports, music and special needs people, my mom and I created the “Points 4 Love” (P4L) song and music video to help create awareness and funding for charity.” Funds raised from the video will be used to support medical fees and sports scholarships.

About the video and project: “Points 4 Love” The idea of the Points 4 Love video originated with every point that the Miami Heat basketball team score in their season, 24

The apple doesn’t fall far…

Greenbaum’s mother Susanne Reiter, a Hollywood resident for over 20 years, is also big into giving back and community service. Reiter has volunteered with many organizations over the years including over six different departments at the Hollywood Police station. She’s been a Cert Team Leader for the Hollywood Fire Department; a pro-bono photographer and donation collector for JAFCO (a center for abused and abandoned children in South Florida); and has fostered over 500 animals with the Broward County Humane Society. Currently a mentor for Take Stock in Children, she’s personally mentored eight teens in Broward County middle and high schools for over nine years. “Since there is order in how the universe works,” muses Reiter, “I’m up for the challenge of coordinating any type of project or event which includes any celebration, corporate project, bringing order to disorderly spaces, moving, renovation, interior design tasks, fundraisers, and much more.”

How to get involved

The video features 25-year-old singer Jeremie-Phenom Thomas, a wheelchair basketball player. Reiter and Greenbaum met Thomas during their Wheels & Waves event which combined swim competitions for kids with special needs and wheelchair basketball tournaments, to raise money for

charity. Thomas was born with spina bifida and plays for the Miami Heat Wheels team that recently won the National Wheelchair Basketball Championships. Thomas’s passion is to produce meaningful music as well as to acquire the necessary sports equipment and athletic scholarships for wheelchair basketball teams. Seven-year-old Hollywood resident and cancer survivor, Miriam Goldsmith was also featured in the video. Diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in 2012 found to be

The final edited version of Points4Love music video has been completed and the team is moving forward to release the full version on iTunes and Vimeo in the next few weeks. They are currently seeking a volunteer social media manager to help spread the word. They are also looking for connections to get support from the Miami Heat corporate office in hopes of having the video and song performed live at the Miami Heat game playoffs. “With your help Coach Jeff, Miriam, Jeremie and many others will become success stories,” she says. If you would like join Ahava and her mom’s quest to make a difference please visit their campaign at GoFundMe. HEALTH NEWS

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital performs 30th heart transplant on recipient’s birthday When it came time to blow out his candles on his 14th birthday, Estefano Reano had only one wish: a new heart. Just 40 minutes later, the Pediatric Heart Transplant team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital surprised his family with a phone call that made his wish come true, making the Weston teen the hospital’s 30th heart transplant recipient. “He was playing at home when we got the phone call telling us there was a heart for Estefano,” said Alfonso Ospino, the teen’s stepfather. “I went to my wife with phone in hand with the news and then turned around and said to our son, ‘Get ready – there is another gift waiting for you.’ ” Today, Estefano is the living legacy of a donor family who gave this pediatric heart transplant patient the gift of a new life with his family. Emotions ran high at a recent news conference at the Conine Clubhouse, located adjacent to JDCH, where Estefano and his family were reunited with the heart transplant team. They came to express their gratitude and give moving tributes and heartfelt testimonials urging the community to become organ donors. “I am so happy to be here and I am so thankful to everyone,” Estefano said. “I want to do many things like travel,

and I want to one day run a sanctuary for endangered animals. I thank the family for giving someone like me a second chance to live the life that I always wanted.” “I prayed and have been grateful to be able to care for my son at home with the help of these doctors,” said Roxana Fergusson, the teen’s mom. “I know there are many children who do not have that opportunity and must live and wait for their hearts in a hospital room. Most importantly, we pray for the family who donated, and I thank them for giving us this gift because I know now that my son has the heart of an angel thanks to them.” Members of the transplant team spoke about Estefano’s condition that led to his need for a heart transplant and the technological advances that allow children to wait longer for organs than was previously possible. According to the team of doctors at JDCH, every child’s individual condition presents a unique situation and level of complexity. In the case of Estefano, he was born

Estefano blowing out the candles on his 14th birthday. with a structural heart condition known as single ventricle heart defect, when the heart doesn’t use all four chambers to function normally. Estefano has had five open heart surgeries since the age of 2. While the surgeries allowed his heart to function better and sustain him, the surgeries worked for a few years until he began to get older. A few years ago, his heart began to fail and he was put on the transplant list. “Estefano waited over two years for his heart,” said Maryanne R. K. Chrisant, M.D., Director, Pediatric Cardiac Transplant, Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy at JDCH. “He and his family realize that receiving a heart transplant is a second chance for Estefano to lead a more normal

life. Estefano is looking forward to returning to school, going out to play athletics and being outside with his friends. His successful course and future dreams coincide with our 30th transplant celebration.” “As the pediatric heart transplant team here at Joe DiMaggio, we have had the privilege to care for 30 children and provide them with an opportunity for a new life. That is truly an amazing and humbling feeling,” said Frank Scholl, M.D. Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation at JDCH. “At this time and with this great joy, we need to remember to thank our donor families who have given the ultimate gift to another human being. We simply could not do this without them.” A video of the surgeons and nurses singing Happy Birthday inside the operating room after a successful surgery was posted on the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Facebook page and spread quickly, prompting positive comments and engagement from the community. The Pediatric Heart Transplant program at JDCH opened on December 10, 2010, when approval at the federal level from UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) was granted. The program’s approval was the culmination of years of strategic planning, including the formation of a pediatric cardiac transplant team with the right mix of expertise and compassion. Five days after program approval, the hospital’s first pediatric heart transplant was performed by the expert cardiac transplant team.

MUNICIPAL NEWS

City launches children's book recycling program locations listed below during regular business hours. Look for a collection box with the Recycle Book label. My name is Zoe Dekeles and have lived in the beautiful city of Hollywood all my life. However, time has come for me to go to college, so I will be moving to St. Petersburg to purse a degree in Environmental Science. No matter where I go, Hollywood will forever be my home. I am a frequent volunteer at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. I also was the Community Events Coordinator for the Hollywood Gazette and the coordinator of Hollywood’s second annual Scavenger Hunt. I know Hollywood like it’s the back of my hand. There is one major issue that occurs on Hollywood Beach that goes unnoticed year after year. Every time I lay my towel out to sun bathe on Hollywood Beach I find something that does not belong. A piece of plastic. It ranges from lighters, beach toys, wrappers, water bottles, straws, utensils, etc. The list of items goes on and on. According to Chapter 97 Section 97.05 (Requirements for establishments that dispense disposable food service products) of the City of Hollywood, Florida Code of Ordinance: “Establishments located east of the Intercoastal Waterway selling food intended for consumption by customers off the premises of such establishments, or serving food in an outside seating area of an establishment, shall not sell or dispense disposable food service products, including but not limited to cups, lids, straws, plates, bowls, utensils, sandwich containers, or other packaging, which are made of plastic, polystyrene plastic, or of any nonbiodegradable material; except, however, that the ban on polystyrene plastic and plastic-coated paper products shall not become effective until the conditions set forth in F.S. § 403.708(11) are met.” According to the Ocean Crusaders, there are around 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Plastic is non-biodegradable which means it’s not going anywhere. A simple water bottle someone drinks will sit in the landfill way past the consumer’s lifetime. Most people think plastic is okay because it’s recyclable. In reality, most pieces of plastic do not end up recycled. Food particles left on plastic makes it contaminated and unable to be recycled. Also, only certain numbers found on the bottom of plastic items are recyclable. The sad truth is that a large portion of the population don’t even bother to recycle. Enforcing this city code ordinance would help reduce the amount of plastic debris found on our beaches. Here is a real opportunity to make

Hollywood a greener community and save our beaches. Restaurants may refuse to remove their plastic take out items due to their belief that alternatives are more expensive. However, now a day’s there are several options for store owners to buy reusable biodegrable utensils and containers. For instance, as I was searching the web I came across a site called ”Webstaurant Store” where store owners can buy biodegrable and compostable items in bulk. The other night, I got take out from a restaurant called Holi Vegan and their containers and silverware were all biodegrable. There is always an alternative, but you have to care and be determined to find it. Another easy fix Hollywood can do is place a ban on plastic bags. According to cleanup.org, “It is estimated worldwide that 1 trillion bags are used and discarded every year.” On November 8, 2016, California approved the Plastic Bag Ban Veto Referendum, also known as Proposition 67. This made them the first state in the U.S to ban the sale of single use plastic bags. Two summers ago, I took a trip to Europe and was surprised to find out that most countries, such as England, France, and Italy, already have a ban against single use plastic bags. In fact several countries all over the world have this ban in place. (http://www.factorydirectpromos.com/ plastic-bag-bans) Yes, most people will consider this an inconvenience, but our world is slowly falling apart due to the carelessness of people. We human beings have to remember that there is no planet b. In exchange for single use plastic bags, people can use reusable bags. They are sold at every check out isle in publix and several other stores. They hold more and are much more stable. Once you have one, you can reuse it every time you go to a store. I keep one in my purse just in case I need it. Hollywood truly is the Diamond of the Gold Coast and I want the best for the environment and residents. This is not a change that will occur at once, but I believe residents should be informed. The first step to a better future is to become informed on what to improve. A ban on plastic items needs to be put into place for our beaches and city to stay beautiful. Sincerley, Zoe Dekeles zoedekeles@gmail.com

City Hall 2600 Hollywood Blvd., 1st Floor David Park Community Center 108 N. 33rd Court Research indicates that having books in the home is strongly linked to educational achievement. Recognizing that reading development is a fundamental component of literacy, the City's Education Advisory Committee is introducing the “Recycle Book Program”. The program was conceived to help families build a home library for their children. You can help promote literacy in Hollywood by collecting new or gentlyused children’s books age infant through young adult. Books may be dropped off at the

Florida Senate President throws support behind civil citations The issue of civil citations has a powerful new supporter. New Florida Senate President Joe Negron, a Republican from Stuart, wants to see reforms within the juvenile justice system that allow young people to start their adult lives without a criminal record. “We don’t want to stigmatize young people who made a poor judgment call,” said Negron, with the punishment “following them for the rest of their life.” Negron and a growing number of community leaders are concerned that too many people arrested for minor offenses while young face ruined lives later. Among ramifications: being unable to join the military, obtain a job or qualify for college scholarships. With a civil citation, young people would complete a program that involves community service and education designed to deter a life of crime. The Rev. Michael Anderson of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church is continuing to promote civil citations for juveniles who have been arrested for non-serious offenses. He is a leader with Broward Organized Leaders Doing Justice, Or BOLD Justice, an organization that urges better treatment for people who face significant disadvantages. He wants civil citations to be implemented throughout Florida. “We as a state must turn a page and use civil citations with young people who have been arrested for non-serious offenses,” Anderson said.

Boulevard Heights Community Center 6770 Garfield Street Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc. (CEC), a Hollywood-based, non-profit agency will distribute the books to eligible families in the community. Your donated books will enable these families to share in the pleasure of reading. HOLLYWOOD PEOPLE PROFILE:

Karen Newman Albertson

Protecting Employee Rights, Defending Employer Interests & Resolving Disputes

BY KENT WALLACE

SOUTH FLORIDA

A&E CORRESPONDENT Karen Newman Albertson arrived in Hollywood when she was but a wee-toddler (3-years old to be exact). Her formal education was provided by Hollywood Central, Olsen Middle and South Broward High (in that order). Karen is currently President of the Hollywood Historical Society, a group she joined in 2007. Her ascension was rapid— from membership to the board of directors to secretary to vice president to her current status as prez… For those who don’t know the HHS is located in the historical Hammerstein House at 1520 Polk Street. They offer up one of the most enjoyable and educational opportunities in town—FREE tours on the first Sunday of every month (1pm—4pm). The Society also boasts an Archive Center (among its gems every copy of the Hollywood Sun Tattler, gobs of old-time photos and post cards; et al). Karen knows from Hollywood (a nod to her many years as a resident). She’s watched it grow over the decades and, as is natural, has some nostalgic laments. However, she perks up when discussing the growth of Harrison Street “It’s drawing some wonderful people and businesses.” Karen raves about the Dream Car

EMPLOYMENT ATTORNEYS Classic event, the new critically acclaimed restaurants and Art Walk. She’s especially proud of the development of the Beach and Broadwalk. “When I was a kid the Broadwalk was nothing more than a thin slab of concrete!” Regarding Hollywood’s allegedly “shady” past, Karen is quick to note that there once was an illegal gambling joint in the building that currently houses La Vendetta restaurant. And while she won’t name names; the father of her best childhood friend (and next-door neighbor) was an alleged mob figure… Karen Albertson is a wealth of knowledge and has first-hand experience of this hippest of hamlets. I strongly urge you to get to know the history of our town and visiting or resourcing the Hollywood Historical Society is a perfect place to start. Learn more by logging onto: holly-

The Hollywood Commission CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com voted last month to allow no more than two medical marijuana dispensaries in Hollywood on the first reading. A second and final vote will be taken in later this month. Limited to two zones in the northcentral section of Hollywood, there will be a 1,000 foot buffer from places of worship, schools and parks. A 500 foot buffer from residential neighborhoods, social service facilities and pain clinics will also exist. The dispensaries will be required to have air filtration systems and odor elimination filters. Drive-through take out service will not be permitted and the dispensaries will only be able to operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to noon on weekends. BY DAVID VOLZ
