STORY Coming from Redmond, we hoped for our kids to grow up with a lifestyle that was the opposite of suburbia, and Raft Island offered just that. We liken it almost to a “Huck Finn” youth, paddling out to Cutts Island, riding bikes around the island and exploring, swimming, fishing, crabbing, and more.

Gig Harbor has great schools, and is close enough to Seattle and Tacoma to offer the flexibility we needed for work and business travel. It was an idyllic childhood for them and we have truly loved it.

In 2011 we started renovating the house. The game room used to be a 2 bedroom apartment, and upstairs was only the primary bedroom, a closet and a loft room. The house ended at the kitchen wall to the east. We chose the Hamptons style because we lived on Long Island when we were first married and loved the homes we saw on the beaches. Over the course of the next 5 years and about $1.5m, the house as it is today emerged.

We will miss so many things about 53 Raft, it’s hard to even know where to begin…

The breezeway and the outdoor fireplace on the patio is our favorite spot. It’s magical to open one or both doors and enjoy the breeze coming through. In the summers we open both doors and leave them open all day. We used the north side of the breezeway for our exercise equipment and it was perfect.

Our beach - It’s very private and people rarely walk our stretch of beach. The water gets quite warm, especially as the tide is coming in and the rocks heat up. We would often hang out in beach chairs and let the tide come up until we float away. The beach is great for clams and oysters. There was no current of any kind on our beach and it’s a very long gentle slope to deeper water, so we felt comfortable allowing the kids to play.

Cutts Island is a festive place on warm summer days, but our beach is far enough away that we can see the festivities but feel like we still have plenty of privacy. In the evenings when it quiets down, we often paddled over to watch the sunset and would have it all to ourselves.

Incredible Sunsets - Year round So much wildlife - Harbor Seals galore, as the Cutts Island beach is one of their favorite sunbathing places, often trailing behind us as we paddle around. Eagles are also abundant. The deer are everywhere and seem to believe they own the island.

Saying goodbye to 53 Raft is a decision that has not come easy. It’s a very special place filled with fond memories. But, it’s time for it to have a new chapter of memory making, and we wish the new owners as many happy years and happy memories as we have and will treasure.

Experience RAFT ISLAND Raft Island is an intimate private island just ten minutes (5.5 miles) from the heart of downtown Gig Harbor, located Henderson Bay in the Puget Sound with spectacular sunsets and views of the Olympic Mountains, and Cutts Island State Park across the Bay. Connected to the mainland by an 800 ft bridge, there are approximately 200 homes on 160 acres.

The Raft Island lifestyle is relaxed, casual, and friendly. You’ll find Islanders walking, jogging, and biking the quiet roads throughout the community, and enjoying two community beaches, a terrific boat launch and dock, park areas and a tennis court.

The vast majority of Raft Islanders are year round residents and the remainder are summer visitors. It has a rich diversity of homes and properties ranging from small rustic cabins and bungalows to exclusive luxury waterfront homes and everything in between. The diversity is part of what makes Raft Island such a relaxed and special place to reside.

The community association is very active in maintaining the community amenities and beautifying the island as well as hosting events for residents and families such as visits from Santa, Easter Egg Hunts, and a Halloween Parade.

The Association is known as RIIA - the Raft Island Improvement Association - providing a framework to pay for the roads, bridge, and amenities as well as create rules and regulations for the safety and enjoyment of all residents and guests. It is not a traditional HOA placing onerous restrictions on individual properties. Dues are $165 per month.

While so close to everything in town, crossing the bridge to the Island feels like an escape to a peaceful oasis.
