Howard Lewis Hazelcorn was born on February 26, 1942 in Brooklyn New York to Sam and Ethel Hazelcorn. Howard’s father was involved with Checker Cabs and imported and sold Austin Healy motor cars. Howard’s mother was a secretary for Columbia Pictures. Howard attended PS 24 in Brooklyn, graduated from Erasmus HS and attended the NY Institute of Finance while working for various investment firms to learn the ins and outs of stock and security trading. As a child, Howard became interested in trading stocks and buying coins. After serving in the US Army Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma , he opened a successful coin shop on 42nd Street in Manhattan which closed because of area redevelopment. His next stop was at Mandelbaum Securities where he quickly rose through the ranks and became partner in charge of over-the counter trading operations. In 1973, Howard left to go out on his own by joining NYMEX as a floor trader. Over the next fifteen years he was a trader, NYMEX historian, and developer of the Broker Training Program. In the 1970’s he began collecting vintage phonographs and records. His interests broadened with time as he began to collect patent models, razors, telephones, typewriters, light bulbs, Vienna art plates, circus memorabilia, cameras, political items, autographs, typewriters and more, just too numerous to mention. He researched everything there was to know and became an authority on the collectibles. As a result, he authored many books on collecting and was a contributor to antique and collecting publications. His wife, Jane Herz Hazelcorn, usually edited the books and they collaborated on some collections.

Jane and Howard built a home and wonderful life in Sarasota, Florida. Howard continued to trade and collect until shortly before his passing on September 8, 2020. He will be remembered as a wonderful father to Dean, Russ and Jill, a devoted husband to the “love of his life” Jane, a U.S. Army veteran, a world renowned collector and authority, mentor to young traders and collectors worldwide, and a philanthropist who generously donated to many causes. Howard influenced many lives and will continue to do so through wonderful memories and shared knowledge. Not bad for a youngster whose 6th grade teacher once told his mother, “to prepare herself because Howard would never amount to much”.

Early Edison Spring Motor Phonograph circa 1896 Cabinet is in excellent original condition with possible slight glossing. The motor is a triple spring Triton with a Class M top works. Motor runs well and quiet, features an early 3 ball nickel plated governor which was changed in a matter of a few months making it rarer than most. SN 23737. Paint is about 95% present with pin striping at about 50-60%. These models were often used by exhibitors in the early years of the phonograph years before people were able to buy a home unit. This is confirmed by the listening rail, which accommodates 15 people listening at a time. Exhibitors would often charge a nickel or dime where people could hear a phonograph for the first time. Using listening tubes (not present) instead of a horn allowed paying customers only to hear. All parts appear original including crank which has metal tag that reads “National Phono. Co. Orange, N.J. This includes the original shaver. Listening rail is original and very rare as well as the connector to the reproducer. The flexible connector has stiffened over the years and does not allow full movement. A real treasure from the early days of the phonograph. Case measures 16.5”W x 10.5”L x 14”T.

#1023 Edison Experimental Cylinder Phonograph

This likely one-of-a-kind machine was made for a specific purpose now lost to history. The base, motor, and bedplate are from an Edison Triumph Model A. From the bedplate and up, it appears to be a class M top works. However, it has been greatly altered with a 6.5” mandrel. The reproducer is a common model K and has a shaving attachment. The most curious part of this machine are 2 pulleys that feed to an even larger sprocket pulley with a perforated belt. This drives a secondary feed screw. Parts of the machine appear to be gold washed. Wood shows some minor damage in places. Square crank is believed to be reproduction. While it can be cranked, it is hindered by the top works extending over to the crank, blocking full rotation. Includes original all brass and unpolished 14” horn with some minor dents. #1095 Bell & Tainter Columbian Expo Cylinder Phonograph

RARE Bell & Tainter Prototype Model 1893 Original tag stating, Property of the laboratory of the American Graphophone Co. Bridgeport Connecticut. Exhibit number 30, with brass inventory tag stating, Model 224. Referenced on page 209 in Howard Hazelcorn’s book Columbia Phonograph Companion. Howard stated the following about the machine, “’The Columbian Exposition coin-operated Graphophone appeared at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Though 100 of these machines were said to be located at the fair, no complete example is known to exist today. The chassis, bedplate and motor pictured is the only vestige remaining of this first coin-slot Columbia. No case included. The Tainter ‘A’ frame chassis found on this machine is similar to the earlier Type C treadle model, with upper drive gears exposed. However, the upper pulley wheel was ¼ inch thicker than a treadle wheel and this is permitted the first use of a flat leather drive belt. A #00, thin necked transitional black gutta percha reproducer was screwed into the treadle type carriage assembly and played the cylinder from right to left. After the record was played, a gear driven return screw added to the back f the chassis, would bring the reproducer back to its original position.” Bedplate appears to have been broken in several places but now seems solid. Electric motor with 4 ball governor. Motor appears to turn free but is not tested. A truly extremely rare piece of phonograph history. Measures 10.25” x 15”.

#1126 4-Minute Type B Cylinder Phonograph

Here is an ordinary machine which in reality is extraordinary. A circa 1897 Columbia B Eagle modified to play 4minute records. Celluloid tag on the lid reads “The Edisonia Co. A.O. Betit, MGR. Newark, N.J.”. Some companies to meet the needs of a changing phonograph world would start with a basic machine and modify it. No doubt in 1908 as four minute records were introduced, two minute machines were becoming outdated. This company purchased remaining stock of Columbia Type B Eagles. They first created their own wooden base and lid, then they added very professional extra gearing, modified the ratchet wind and some other changes. These changes allowed this machine to become a 4 minute cylinder phonograph. The name Columbia appears nowhere on the case or mechanism. They also created a clever horn crane that slides on the machine with no modifications to the unit. This machine has been tested and indeed does play a 4 minute record. Oak lid and base in original untouched condition with 1 crack in the wood. Nickel plating on the mechanism is good, comes with reproduction floating reproducer. Horn is an original, all brass, 14” horn with original chain. Despite their clever modifications, there is little doubt that these machines did not sell in large quantities. A great addition to any collection and a machine that most people have never heard of.

#1128 Columbia Model B Cylinder Phonograph

Circa late 1890’s. Nickel plating is excellent, all parts are original, reproducer is original and has good stylist. Motor winds and runs. What makes this common machine quite unusual is that it bears the rectangular ID plate, normally found on the front, that reads “Eastern Talking Machine Co. On Tremont St. Boston Mass. Gramophones, Phonographs, Records, Horns”. Companies were known to purchase the workings only and put it in their own case which is what happened with this machine and bears the remnants of the celluloid tag that again reads the “Eastern Talking Machine Co.”. Comes with a 10” reproduction nickel plated bell horn. A different twist on a common machine.

#1132 Columbia Model AP Cylinder Phonograph

According to Howard, this machine did not appear in Columbia catalogs. Instead of being sold, it was used as a premium or give away for retailers. Since it was free, it was of very basic construction. It had a painted black base with gold pin striping. Instead of Columbia using a feed screw so the machine did not skip, this model relied upon gravity in hopes that the stylus followed the record groves. To keep the reproducer from sliding off, the words “Keep level” were stamped in the gear cover which corresponded to a leveling screw below. The black paint appears to be original with redone pin stripes, the ornate winding key is original, and the motor winds and runs. Comes with an original 10” cone horn with good paint and stripe, especially designed for the premium machine. A seldom seen small Columbia model that can fit into anyone’s collection. Measures 11.5” x 6”.

#1129 Columbia Model B Cylinder Phonograph

SN 91126. Overall plating is excellent, machine winds and runs. Reproducer stylus bar was removed and replaced with a small volcano shaped device that holds the stylus and marked “PAT. Sept. 25, 1900”. Horn is an original 10” all nickel horn with only some light dings and creases at the edge of the bell. Platting about 65%. What really makes this machine stand out is the large decal that reads “Hawthorne & Sheble 604-606 Chestnut Street Philadelphia PA.”. Please note the machine was never mounted to the wood base. Again, an example of an ordinary machine made extraordinary to a collector.

#1134 Type B Columbia Eagle Cylinder Graphophone

As described on page 34 in the Talking Machine Compendium, it states “A hand driven Berliner Gramophone originally sold for $15.00. This reasonably priced machine inaugurated Berliner’s activities in the United States”. One issue with early machines is that they are often found incomplete, having gone through 1 or 2 generations of ownership. When an incomplete machine is found, rarely are the parts available to complete it. Most collectors feel that a complete machine with some reproduction parts is better than an incomplete machine. Once replated, an original nickel part looks brand new and new wood can be refinished. When describing this machine, we are being honest saying this is a partially original machine with reproduction parts to complete it. Some items are clearly new and other parts are aged. As far as original parts, the turntable, the record hold down, the travel arm resting post, and wood travel arm appear to be to have aged more than other parts. The reproducer is clearly new as is the elbow and Bakelite stepdown pulley, but the metal casting that supports the pulley appears to be original. The nickel turntable flywheel shows signs of age. The travel arm is stamped PAT’d May 6 1890. An oak base has several patent dates stamped into it. The funnel horn is an older reproduction and measures 16” x 10”. Machine would need new O ring belt. Base measures 15.375” x 9.75”.

#2003a Victor Toy Disc Phonograph

Also known as the $3 Victor. Has original oak base that measures 10.25” x 8.25” with a light gloss. Original decal reads “The Gramophone Co. Lte. 31 Maiden Lane, London”. This low-cost machine allowed the owner to only play 7” records or it would interfere with the winding crank. It also included a children’s record with 6 songs on it with the purchase. First introduced in 1901. Mechanism is turned by hand but maintains speed through an early governor. If the mechanism had nickel plated parts, they are mostly worn off. Support arm has either been re plated or is a reproduction. The horn support and reproducer strap appear to be original but likely wood arm and cradle look replaced. Reproducer is an original long throat concert with the markings “Gramophone & Typewriter Lte. London Berlin Paris”. Black cone horn with 2 gold stripes measures 15” X 6.25” and is larger than the one that originally came with this machine. Horn has a decal with the name “Pearson Weist” which is assumed to be the dealer who sold it. Leather elbow is a replacement. One of the most sought after of the early machines.

#2004 Berliner Open Works Disc Phonograph

At first glance this machine appears to be an early Victor toy model but further investigation shows that it is made with Berliner parts i.e. support and travel arm, top wind, etc. It paints a picture of a Berliner machine that has been scaled back allowing Berliner to undercut it’s competition. #2065 Large Off Brand Upright Phonograph w/ Inlay

This outstanding upright phonograph in a red mahogany cabinet with an elaborate mother of pearl and brass inlay, depicting a plant like theme. For the most part, the inlay is in tact. Red mahogany cabinet appears to be professionally stripped and refinished in a high gloss finish some time ago but is overall in good condition with some minor marks. Most likely a custom build one off, machine bears a maker’s tag from the Independent Talking Machine Co. New York. Behind the 2 speaker doors there is an elaborate grill that is in good condition. Lower record storage has 2 shelves, original glass knobs, and cabinet sits atop 4 impressive claw and ball feet. Reproducer, tone arm, other various metal parts have been painted gold. Note the tone arm might not be original to the machine. Original winding crank, motor winds and runs. Also included are various spare parts including reproducer, needle tin, and speed control, may or may not be from this machine. A real beauty.
