The United States context

• Each year, around 14 million Americans aged 65+ fall. Equal to 1 in 4 older adults [1].

• Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries in this age group [2].

• In 2021, falls led to 38,000 deaths and more than 3 million emergency department visits among older adults [2].

• By 2030, the annual cost of treating fall-related injuries in older adults is expected to exceed $101 billion [3].

• More than half of older adults who fall require hospital treatment, with an average cost of $18,658 per inpatient admission and $1,112 per ER visit [4].

• In 2020, non-fatal falls cost $80 billion (up from $50 billion in 2015). Of this, 67% was paid by Medicare, 4% by Medicaid, and 29% out-of-pocket by older adults and families [5].

• A single fall doubles the likelihood of falling again [6].

• Loneliness can increase the risk of early mortality by 26% [8].

• 14% of older adults on Medicare (Equivalent to 4 million) have limited social networks, costing an additional $1,608 per person each year — adding up to $6.7 billion in extra Medicare spending annually [8].

Exampl e Financial Impact for 100bed Nu rsing Home

• In a 100-bed home, around 25 residents typically fall each year (1 in 4 older adults) [1].

• With a 20% reduction, that’s 5 fewer falls annually.

Cost Savings

• If all 5 avoided falls required inpatient care: 5 × $18,658 = $93,290 saved.

• If ER only: 5 × $1,112 = $5,560 saved.

• In reality, a mix of both → $50,000–$75,000 annual savings per home.

Burns Gym addresses these challenges by improving mobility and reducing isolation, with evidence-backed results.
