PIONEERS

For the last thirteen years, Jenna Burlingham Gallery has been championing British women artists. It is therefore fitting that our first Summer Exhibition in the new gallery should celebrate the contribution of women to the development of British Art of the twentieth century.
Working across genres and in a variety of mediums, some of these artists were at the forefront of the avant-garde whilst others were more quietly experimental. Many are well-known such as Elizabeth Blackadder, Barbara Hepworth, Winifred Nicholson and Anne Redpath, whilst the significance of others such as Elisabeth Collins and Stella Steyn has only come to light more recently.
Within this group, we are delighted to present a private collection of important works by Sandra Blow showing her daring and ground-breaking experimentation from the post-war period. These paintings were acquired directly from the Artist’s estate in 2007 and have not been seen in public since their inclusion in the Royal Academy Retrospective in 1994.
The innovative artists included in this show shaped and inspired British art from the 1920s. Some are bold, others more restrained. A number of the contemporary artists represented by the gallery also feature in the exhibition.
