George’s Cash Store was one of the early businesses at First and Main

Since its founding 1905, Jenks has developed from a rural railroad settlement to a prosperous hub of arts, education, business and community.

Located along the shore of the Arkansas River, Jenks is the premier location to raise a family, explore the oceans, start a business or take a trip back to yesteryear.

Jenks was established by an agreement between the Midland Valley Railroad and Midland Valley Townsite Company and was named for railroad official Elmer E. Jenks.

The area population exploded in 1906 with the discovery of

As the oil boom took hold, expensive oil tanks and equipment increased area property values and produced revenue for the Jenks schools system.

The town endured a number of catastrophic floods during the early part of the twentieth century, leading Jenks voters to pass a bond issue for the construction of levees, which were completed in 1948.

The city and school system continued to grow throughout the middle of the twentieth century.

In 1986, the city entered another exciting era as local leaders worked to attract antique dealers to the downtown area.

The venture proved so successful that Oklahoma’s thenfirst lady Shirley Bellmon declared Jenks to be the Antique

Present-day Jenks is still home to some of the region’s finest antique shopping, and Main Street is thriving with new shopping, dining and night life options.

The next major project in downtown Jenks is the “Downtown Commons,” a green space designed to bring the community together. With a built-in stage, food truck accessibility and seating for several hundred, the Downtown Commons is set to draw visitors to Main Street like never before. The space is planned to open in 2017.

Through all this development, the arts play a major role in attracting locals and visitors alike to Jenks. Opened in 2015, the Hive is a 6,000-square-foot art gallery and workspace, showcasing work from nationally acclaimed artists on a rotating basis. Show schedules are available at thehivejenks. com.

Beyond downtown, Jenks is uniquely nestled along the Arkansas River, and RiverWalk Crossing is the region’s premier waterfront shopping, dining and entertainment destination.

Jenks is also home to one of the top school districts in Oklahoma, consistently graduating National Merit Scholars and achieving excellence in academics, athletics and the arts. With a planetarium and Olympic-sized swimming facility right on campus, Jenks Public Schools can provide an educational experience beyond compare for local students.

Finally, the community is home to the Oklahoma Aquarium, which boasts the biggest bull sharks in captivity and is nearing completion of a new sea turtle exhibit destined to draw thousands of visitors annually.



Chamber uniting business and community The Jenks Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting and enhancing the economic vitality and quality of life in the Jenks community.

Incorporated in 1966, the Jenks Chamber stands as the voice of business in the community, offering professional development, networking and informational programs in addition to working with elected and government officials at all levels to make sure the voice of business and the voice of Jenks is heard.

CHRIS HOPKINS

Meet the artist: Christopher Westfall Christopher Westfall is an artist in residence at the Hive. He began his residency in the spring of 2016.

Why did you want to get involved at the Hive?

I was looking for a new studio away from home. I am a father of a 2 year old and my productivity from my home studio had drastically dropped off. The studio space at the Hive has allowed me to be much more productive and it’s a beautiful studio space.

What have you accomplished so far at the Hive, and what do you hope to accomplish?

I have been able to produce a higher volume of work. It’s also much easier for me to produce bigger pieces. I’m having a one-man show in the

Talk a little about your journey to becoming a full time artist

My journey as a full time fine artist started in 2005. I’ve spent the last 11 years exhibiting in local and regional art shows, including Jenks Art on Main. I’ve developed several series of paintings in that time including cityscapes, landscapes, abstracts, contemporary still lifes, and a series of symphony paintings.

ALLISON KEIM Allison Keim began her residency in 2016 Working in an abstracted, gestural style, Allison’s work is often etherial and organic.

She draws inspiration from the environment of her home state of Oklahoma to create a composition revolving around an unforgettable moment or complex emotion. In addition to making original abstract paintings, she also works with clients to create custom work.

Chris Hopkins began his residency at the Hive in 2015.

He has been a professional visual communicator for 15 years in fields including animation, graphic design, motion graphics and illustration.

Chris is an animation instructor at Tulsa Tech’s Riverside campus, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 2016. Previously, he taught graphic design and multimedia at OSUIT in Okmulgee for six years.

He holds an associate’s degree in art from Tulsa Community College, as well as a bachelor’s in business administration and a master’s in business management from St. Gregory’s University.

Chris has worked as an animator at Wolverton Animation, art director at IBEAM Broadcasting and multimedia art director at the Tulsa Zoo.

Community invests in Vision When Jenks voters approved Vision for Jenks in June 2016, they were continuing the tradition of investing in community.

Vision 2025, passed by Tulsa County voters in 2003 had great success in building a strong and prosperous Tulsa County. Vision 2025 projects included downtown Tulsa’s BOK Center, which has drawn acts from Justin Bieber to Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney.

Projects in Jenks have included funding for the Oklahoma Aquarium and making improvements on Main Street Jenks.

One of the most exciting projects Jenks is funding with Vision 2025 monies is the aquarium’s Sea Turtle Experience, set to open in 2017.

Another major project is the Downtown Commons, a green space set to open in early 2017 that transforms an underused parking lot just off Main Street into a vibrant green space. The Downtown Commons, made possible by the City of Jenks, Vision 2025 funds and Jenks Public Schools, will feature an event stage, mature trees, walking trails, food truck hookups and more.

The Downtown Commons is Jenks’ newest green space, set to open in 2017.

As part of the overall project, additional parking areas have been added to downtown Jenks. These new parking areas are being created by paving and structuring unused lots in downtown Jenks.

Vision for Jenks also included funds to partner with the City of Tulsa to build a low water dam near 103rd St. This dam will create a lake stretching north past River Spirit Casino, dramatically improving the visual appeal of the area and opening new opportunities for development.

Vision for Jenks also includes funds for neighborhood street repairs, a new splash pad at Veterans Park and sidewalk construction throughout the city.

Find your adventure at the Oklahoma Aquarium

For more than 13 years, hundreds of thousands of visitors agree: the Oklahoma Aquarium is a must-see!

Featuring the 500,000-gallon Siegfried Families Shark Adventure, which houses the largest bull sharks in captivity, the aquarium includes more than 100 exhibits.

Adventurers of all ages can view clown fish, poison dart frogs, the playful otters in the Hayes Family Ozark exhibit and more.

The Shark Adventure also includes a domed walk-through tunnel for visitors to view the bull sharks, lemon sharks, tiger sharks and nurse sharks.

In 2017, another exciting exhibit opens: the Sea Turtle Experience. The exhibit will feature two loggerhead sea turtles, gentle

giants found in oceans across the globe.

Another popular attraction is the PSO Extreme Amazon exhibit featuring crawlthrough tunnels and pop-up spots for young visitors to immerse themselves in the animals of the Amazon.

The aquarium also offers a number of special attractions including shark feedings and behind-the-scenes tours.

The aquarium is also available for private events, has hosted several major events including Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin’s pre-Inaugural Ball.

Festivals bring year-round fun to Jenks JENKS COMMUNITY EASTER EGG HUNT Hosted by the Jenks Ministerial Alliance, the Community Easter Egg hunt offers youngsters a chance to enjoy a time-honored tradition in the days before the holiday.

HERB AND PLANT FESTIVAL The Herb and Plant Festival is a perennial favorite for gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Organized by the Jenks Garden Club, it takes place every April on Main Street.

Featuring more than 100 vendors, this free-to-attend festival draws more than 10,000 shoppers looking for annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, herbs, tomato plants and more.

AQUARIUM RUN Held in April and presented by the Oklahoma Aquarium, this popular event includes a fun run, 5K, 10K and half-marathon.

Runners from across the area converge on Jenks in order to compete.

TAKE ME FISHING DAY The Jenks Optimist Club’s Take Me Fishing Day is a free event designed for the whole family.

Taking place at Veterans Park, local anglers help future fishermen bait their hooks, catch a fish and have a great time.

JENKS AMERICA FREEDOM FEST Downtown Jenks becomes the epicenter of Americana on Independence Day. Jenks America Freedom Fest features live music, watermelon, barbecue and tons of activities for children, including the ever-popular Splash Zone, courtesy of the Jenks Fire Department.

Taking place just before Los Cabos Boomfest kicks off, the morning and afternoon event is a great way for a family to celebrate America’s independence.

LOS CABOS BOOMFEST Featuring one of the state’s largest fireworks displays, Los Cabos Boomfest draws tens of thousands of visitors annually to Jenks and the Arkansas River.

The fireworks show, which is launched from the iconic Jenks pedestrian bridge, is only one part of the great evening of entertainment that awaits.

HOMETOWN HUDDLE The Hometown Huddle is a community-wide event each September to kick-start the Jenks High School Trojan football season. Festivities include a pep rally and community block party before the home football game kicks off. It takes place just outside Hunter-Dwelley Field. The Hometown Huddle is hosted by the Jenks Public Schools Foundation.

LIGHTS ON! This kick-off to the holiday shopping season serves to highlight the great businesses in Jenks and the community as a whole.

The Lights On ceremony ushers in the celebration as the community gathers to watch the official switching on of the Christmas lights on Main Street.

Businesses flock to RiverWalk Crossing RiverWalk Crossing is one of the hottest destinations in the Tulsa region, as major businesses flock to the unique waterfront development.

Opened in mid-2016, FlyingTee Golf draws thousands of visitors to experience golf, food and fun overlooking the Arkansas River. FlyingTee is the premier golf, dining and entertainment venue in the region, boasting four games, 18 courses and 60 hitting bays for players of all skill levels.

Longtime favorite Los Cabos Mexican Grill continues to boom with live summer concerts, delicious food and an outdoor cabana bar.

Regional favorite Andolini’s Pizza also announced plans in 2016 to open a RiverWalk Crossing location, boasting some of Tulsa’s most popular pie.

Locally-owned Maryn’s Taphouse and Raw Bar began construction in the summer of 2016 on a new space, set to offer the highest quality in food, beer, wine, cocktails and service.

RiverWalk is home to other popular attractions such as Robin’s Roast Coffee, Trader Leaf Teas and Pinot’s Palette.

RiverWalk also plays host to the Summer Concert Series, featuring the area’s most popular acts every weekend during the summer.

For runners and cycling enthusiasts, a trail along the river connects to the regional trail system, providing some of the most scenic looks at the Arkansas River anywhere.
