The school, founded by the Benedictine Sisters in 1912, serves students from across the region in both North Dakota and Minnesota. The school is only one of a handful of K-12 schools nationwide that is financially supported by a single parish. Sacred Heart Church is a 1,000 family parish.

The National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) is a leading Catholic organization with a purpose to promote Catholic Schools nationwide. This organization holds a national conference every year where some of the brightest minds and strongest supporters of Catholic education gather to help reinvigorate attendees and celebrate our mission. The greater Grand Forks area residents are blessed to have such strong Catholic school options here in our city. The 11 reasons listed above from the NCEA are a great start, but if a friend, relative, neighbor, or colleague asked you “Why Catholic School?” what would you say? It’s my hope that you would not only mention some of the items listed above, but also add many others. Why Sacred Heart School? For most of us the short list above is only the beginning.

Sacred Heart is on the move and we recognized the need to revitalize our Sacred Heart newsletter.

With the announcement of the new Sacred Heart School addition, this issue’s Q & A section is devoted to building-related questions. Read more about the seven classroom addition on page 4.

Q1: How was the decision made to construct a new addition?

On February 12th, 2018, the Sacred Heart Foundation Board, Finance Council, Pastoral Council, and School Advisory Council met in a joint session to discuss acceptance of the $2.5M dollar grant offer, as well as the $7M Seize this Moment Campaign Plan. All four groups unanimously endorsed the plan.

Q2: How will the new school addition be funded?

It will be funded by a generous $2.5 million dollar gift from the Engelstad Family Foundation with a requirement that the Sacred Heart Foundation raises a $500,000 match by December 31st, 2018.

Q4: What classes will be in the new addition?

In order to have the space needed to educate two sections of each grade we needed seven additional classrooms. The new addition will house two sections of 4th, 5th, and 6th grades and our Preschool for a total of seven classrooms. The addition will also include a commons area with tables to be utilized for cooperative learning activities and evening meetings including Bible studies, Confirmation, and religious education classes.

Q5: Will we ever need to build onto the school again?

Never say never, but most likely not in our lifetime! This additional space provided by the new school addition will give us the space to be able to educate two sections or 40-50 students per grade in K-12th.

That number is our goal and the maximum capacity for our building based on not only classroom space but also gym and lunchroom capacity.

Q6: When will construction begin?

The school anticipates a groundbreaking to occur in the early part of summer with primary exterior construction to be completed over this summer (2018). Interior work will be completed over the winter and the new addition is expected to be in use for students for the first day of school starting the fall of 2019.

Q3: Where are they building the new school addition?

The addition is going to be built on the south side of the school by the existing playground. The addition will be built primarily on the grassy area between the school and current

A 10,865 square-foot addition on the elementary end of Sacred Heart School includes seven classrooms and a commons area.

The school has secured a $2.5 million dollar matching gift and has a $500,000 challenge to donors to match by Dec. 31st, 2018.

Sacred Heart School, with the support of donors as a part of the New Day Campaign, has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. The school maintains Personalized Education Profiles for all students in gr. 6–12, has implemented a new school leadership structure, increased faculty salary compensation and added funding for advanced degrees for faculty, added six on-site dual college credit courses for students, increased tuition revenue collection, created a full-time marketing and admissions position, and started the Sacred Heart Foundation 501(c)(3) to help supplement education costs and manage scholarships and endowments.

In just five years, Preschool-12th enrollment is up 30%, with an expected increase of over 100 students by Fall 2018. The school expects to host double sections of all grades except 4th, 5th, 10th, and 12th when school resumes this fall.

Growth is a Good Problem at SHS With recent growth, Sacred Heart has tried to squeeze every bit of space out of the current structure, converting areas meant for other purposes into classroom space. The upper grade level of the present school building has already lost three full classrooms, and subdivided another classroom into two as the school tries to accommodate the expanding enrollment. “The need for more classroom space has become a limiting factor in our offerings at Sacred Heart,” says School President Carl Adolphson, “If we want to continue our growth and academic excellence we need more space.” A growing student body has now created a bottle-neck as students progress to the upper grades.

“We keep getting calls about enrollment,” says Jen MacLeod Koller ‘02, the school’s Admission Director. “Our Preschool and Kindergartens are full at 40, capped, and at the point of having waitlists, with 6th, 7th, and a few other grades not far behind.”

With the understanding that the school will run out of space after the coming year, the Sacred Heart Foundation has been working on financing an addition and was recently awarded a generous $2.5 million dollar matching grant from the Engelstad Family Foundation to be used towards new construction. “They certainly didn’t have to do this for Sacred Heart. But, they did,” says School Superintendent, Msgr. Mike Foltz. “The Holy Spirit works in mysterious ways and we will honor their gift by making Sacred Heart School the best it can be.”

The Sacred Heart Foundation plans to Seize this Moment The Sacred Heart Foundation will have to raise a matching $500,000 by December 31st, 2018, to secure the $2.5M dollar grant. The Foundation concluded that this would be an opportunity to build upon this generosity as the school had just finished off the New Day Campaign nearly two years ago. “After generating $6M from scratch going back to 2013 we pondered the practicality of launching another campaign,” says Sacred Heart Foundation Chair Dan Zavoral ‘93. With the a new addition structure comes a need for additional staff, maintenance costs, increased faculty salaries, and additional subsidization for scholarships and tuition assistance for current and new students. The Foundation has grouped these needs together into the Seize this Moment Campaign.

Adding capacity in the elementary enables the school to reclaim space lost in the high school and allows more students to be able to filter into various class offerings in grades 7-12th.

Filling upper level seats makes the entire enterprise more cost-efficient and allows more scheduling options to make the high school experience more attractive.

“We need to continue on our current trajectory financially and in enrollment growth to meet our long-term goals,” says Adolphson. School Administration recognizes there are some challenges associated with adding onto the present structure of Sacred Heart School. “By raising additional funds beyond the $3M cost of the new addition,” explains Adolphson, “we will be able to extend our growth time allowing students to grow and fill the high school, fund current and future building maintenance needs, and keep us on our current path to ensure Sacred Heart School is here for the next 100+ years!”

In 2013, the Sacred Heart National Advisory Council (NAC), comprised of nearly 100 alumni, parents, and friends returned to Sacred Heart to participate in an assessment process and make recommendations for changes at SHS. Immediately, the school began to implement fresh ideas, capturing the attention of new families interested in cutting-edge education with a Catholic approach. This process helped SHS discover what needed to be accomplished in order for the school to grow in quality and enrollment and inspired the successful New Day Capital Campaign to help finance and implement the recommended changes.

NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING

We have been blessed with the opportunity to Seize this Moment to support the growth and success of Sacred Heart School. Now is the time, and this is your opportunity to be a part of this transformational effort to support the students, faculty and staff of Sacred Heart School!

The three story building was located on South Fourth Street. After the December 23rd, 1958 “Christmas Sing” students carried books and supplies to their new classrooms. Five hundred and fifteen children from first grade through seventh occupied the new building when school reconvened January 7th, 1959.

FLOOD DESTROYS SACRED HEART The greater Grand Forks community fell into the national spotlight as the entire area was evacuated and the cities’ dikes were breached by the mighty Red River. When families returned many found not only their homes were damaged from the record APRIL flood, but that the original 1912 school, 1950s buildings, and the convent were unsalvageable.

2) Scholarships & Endowments | $1,500,000

The increase in enrollment seeks to provide Scholarships and Endowments required to support students and families who desire a Catholic Education.

Many donors have already provided funds to honor a family or loved one. These funds can be directed to a specific focus of academics or grade level.

3) People & Programs | $2,000,000

TEMPORARY SCHOOL

The Engelstad Family Foundation has provided a matching grant of $2.5 million for the construction of a school addition to accommodate the increasing enrollment at Sacred Heart School. To secure this grant, Sacred Heart must match these funds with $500,000 in cash by December 31, 2018.

With the original school buildings demolished, students in Preschool through Grade 12 were housed for two academic years in a temporary metal structure on Hwy 2 while the construction of the new Sacred Heart building SEPT. could be completed.

Sandra Ripp Munson ‘79 was named the 2017 School Nurse of the Year by the School Nurse Organization of Minnesota. This honor, stemming from peer-nomination, recognizes one licensed school nurse annually who emulates the profession of School Nursing.

Laura Kohns Brickson ‘89 has been teaching for 24+ years in Thief River Falls, MN and mostly at St. Bernard’s Catholic School. This past fall she began work on her PhD in Teaching and Learning with an Emphasis in Teacher Education at the University of North Dakota. She also teaches two classes at UND. She and her husband Patrick reside in Thief River Falls.

Bob is the Associate Head Women’s Soccer Coach for the University of Wyoming. They live in Laramie, WY, and have two daughters – Ellis (3) and Kendall (2).

The Sacred Heart Foundation expanded fundraising efforts by participating in Giving Hearts Day held on February 8th, 2018.

Giving Hearts Day is a one day online charitable fundraising event where gifts are matched to double donation amounts.

The program’s purpose is to provide an opportunity for current donors to make a greater impact and encourage others to support the students of Sacred Heart School.

Our initial goal was to raise $25,000.

When the day ended, the Sacred Heart Foundation raised $26,052 from 105 individual donors and a generous $10,000 matching gift. Thank You to our donors who helped increase this fundraiser by 17% this year!

SNAPSHOTS

1) The regional 1st place championship trophy for the Know Your Faith Challenge came home from Dickinson with SHS juniors Bill White, Jack White, and Lily Zimprich. The Know Your Faith challenge pits the Catholic High Schools of Fargo Shanley, Bismarck St. Mary’s, Dickinson Trinity, Minot Bishop Ryan and East Grand Forks Sacred Heart in a Catholic trivia challenge during Catholic Schools Week. This was only Sacred Heart’s second year participating.

2) Congrats to the MN State Science Fair participants: Chenzhu ‘Yuki’ Guan (special award for project on sound waves in water and 2nd in Excellence in Acoustics), Caden Knutsvig (honorable mention for project on the heat shock protein in water bears), and Kannon Knutsvig (honorable mention and 3rd for his project on uranium radiation versus plant growth). Miss Bauer and the Science Club are looking forward to next year!

3) SHS robotics won a qualifying match at the Minnesota State VEX Robotics competition and continued strong throughout the tournament.

4) Coming off of a successful run of the fall drama, 50 Reasons NOT to be in a Play, SHS students put on an excellent rendition of the musical, Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, to the delight of crowds of all ages.

5) Sacred Heart boys basketball had an unprecedented season! The team finished with a 23-5 win/loss record. Five players were named to All Conference or Honorable Mention - Jack Gerber, Jordan Tomkinson, Brenden Bethke, Evan Sczepanski, and Oscar Ortiz. Bethke, Gerber, and Tomkinson were also three of the eight member Grand Forks Fastbreak All-City team.

7) Grant Sullivan and Will Rohrich (pictured), both had tremendous wrestling seasons, in which they went to the 2018 North Dakota Class A State Tournament as individuals and as part of the team. They helped the Grand Forks Central Knights place 15th as a team in the North Dakota tournament and both will be highly ranked entering next season. Will Rohrich placed 5th at the North Dakota State Wrestling tournament, the highest of any member on the team.

8) Our Sacred Heart archers did an awesome job shooting at State Archery this year! The team was lead by Naomi Lee and Grace Loeslie (who shot a perfect 50 in her first round!). All of our archers except one shot their personal best at the State Shoot.

Roger Morton announced that he would be retiring from teaching after 37 years. Roger has been a large part of the Sacred Heart experience since 1979, first as a junior high football and basketball coach, and then full time in 1981 as a teacher and coach. His first teaching assignment was as a High School Physical Education, American History, and Geography teacher at Sacred Heart. “People say I taught at Sacred Heart for 37 years but I feel Sacred Heart has taught me,” says Roger. “I am blessed to be a part of a great family and as I leave, I am taking many of you with me.”

Roger has touched the lives of countless Sacred Heart students and athletes. “I have been teaching for so long that I have had numerous three generations of students,” says Roger.

He was the head boys basketball coach for 22 years and coached for 17 years as the assistant Varsity football coach. “You will live on in my memories, and remember all the great things we achieved together.”

Deb Hammond announced this fall that she would be retiring from Sacred Heart after 36 years of teaching, 21 of them spent at Sacred Heart.

Deb joined Sacred Heart during the temporary school years in the fall of 1997. “The temporary building was interesting,” explains Deb. “We had to start a few days late as our furniture and supplies did not show up on

time!” She says she was able to see the old school during her interview.

“Dave (Andrys) walked me through the flooded building,” says Deb. “I could tell that he LOVED this school and I wanted to be a part of this community.”

Deb joined Sacred Heart first as a preschool teacher, and brought nearly 19 years of previous teaching experience from various Montessori schools with her. With the construction of the new school, Deb was influential in the start of the Sacred Heart Child Care Center in 1999. Deb saw her children, Nick Hammond ‘11 and Brittany Hammond Ewens ‘12 graduate from Sacred Heart School. In 2014, Deb moved from Preschool, where she had taught for 17 years, to Sacred Heart’s expanding Kindergarten and has done a wonderful job with our youngest students.

Sue Vanyo, Parishioner, Parent, & Staff, April 6th, 2018 - Sue and her husband Phil brought their children Jessica ‘11, Alex ‘13, and Matt ‘16 to East Grand Forks in 1998. Sue brought her talents to SHS as the Development Associate Director. Wherever Sue worked she took pride in doing the best she could to help others. Besides working full time jobs and raising her children, Sue also volunteered for many functions. Sue’s love of music allowed her to sing in the Sacred Heart “Eagle’s Wings” choir for the past 20 years. Sue’s beautiful voice and sweet smile will be missed by everyone she met. In June of 2017 Sue was diagnosed with cancer. She accepted her challenge and after a courageous battle went willingly and happily to meet her Savior. The family has established the Susan Vanyo Music Scholarship at Sacred Heart School in her honor.
