For our design proposal, we started by analyzing the site and realized the parking lot located at Drake University could serve great potential, and in doing so, we are proposing a studio arts building. We studied the site and soon realized the supporting buildings could help in deciding the overall composition of our building. In the end, we realized we could have this symmetrical building offset to become a more functional structure, with studios and workspaces on the west side of our building and seminar rooms, and a lecture hall on the east side with this 12’ massive shell that would potentially do all sorts of things. This shell would serve as a daylight shading device set in 9’, providing indirect lighting in these rooms. All mechanical and electrical components would also be designed inside this shell. We are also proposing an area near the top of our shell that would collect Grey water and return it to other systems in our building, such as toilets and water for washing out paintbrushes and more. This shell presents many solutions for this proposal by designing a self-sufficient building with PV paneling along our sawtooth roof to collect northern daylight to distribute throughout our building in hopes that it will support the energy needs for this building and avoid the glare of direct sunlight.

Prosper Park will offer an opportunity to redevelop San Lorenzo by connecting the community and people through an open site design and uniting the community through growth and empowerment. The main goal of this project is to provide San Lorenzo with new public spaces that stitch back to the historic elements of the neighborhood. Currently, San Lorenzo offers a variety of architecture that does not meet the general needs of the population. Courtyards throughout San Lorenzo are often small, with minimal light and even less greenery. Through designing the masses and forms for Proper Park, the organization started with two bars stretching along the northern and southern borders of the site, mirroring surrounding buildings. These extrusions help create a central axis through the park. Trees will embrace the site facade as a barrier between the disrupting roadway and the open spaces inside. Community spaces are on the ground floor of the building. These areas are designed as open courtyards with green spaces, allowing people to experience this site differently through each central point. An open greenery expanse will flood the landscape, embracing the site with multiple over and understory trees for shade and ornamental factors. These open spaces allow people to come and relax, as San Lorenzo has many people in the working class and a university nearby. Prosper Park will provide San Lorenzo with the community and public spaces the neighborhood lacks, providing space for community involvement and social inclusion.
