On behalf of the Administration, Faculty and Staff of Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, I am pleased to introduce you to our beloved School.

For nearly 160 years, Gwynedd Academy High School has educated, inspired, and empowered generations of women leaders. As the world changes and evolves at an ever faster pace, our commitment to the education of young women is more important than ever. They are the future, and our future is in their hands.

At Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, you will find a stimulating, challenging, and spirited high school experience with boundless opportunities for growth. We are pleased to offer engaging, relevant academic curriculum, more than 30 student organizations, 13 Varsity and Junior Varsity sports teams (which boast many great achievements!), and a variety of volunteer service programs and trips, just to name a few points of pride.

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School selects young women who wish to pursue a college preparatory program. The Admissions Committee reviews evidence of an applicant’s academic abilities, character, and service demonstrated to her school and community through her applicant file. In order to facilitate the process of admittance, each student interested in attending Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School must complete the application process. Admission is granted to students who meet Gwynedd’s standards and will profit from its educational, physical, social, and spiritual programs. Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School admits students of any religion, race, color, national and ethnic origin. We do not discriminate, and all students are equally provided the rights and privileges in administration of our admissions policies, educational policies, scholarship and financial aid programs, and athletic and other school programs.

Leading our Gwynedd Mercy community is President Denise Corkery Marbach ’72, P’05, ‘09 and Principal Mary E. Kirby. Mrs. Marbach is a proud Alumna, mother of two Alumnae, former Chair of the Gwynedd Board of Trustees, and an accomplished businesswoman. Her business acumen and deep Mercy roots are evident and pervade our School’s red and gold corridors. As Principal, Ms. Kirby provides a great depth of school leadership and curriculum expertise from her decades of experience as a teacher and administrator in Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. I welcome the opportunity to introduce you to both of these remarkable women when you visit Gwynedd.

Specifically, the enclosed Admissions Supplement is designed to help you navigate through the admissions and enrollment process and learn the most up-todate details about our curriculum, new initiatives, Counseling Center services, recent achievements, and more. You can read additional information about all of these topics at gmahs.org, where you will also fill out the online application and register for upcoming events.

Each year, Gwynedd is pleased to accept transfer students, availability permitting. Those students interested in transferring to Gwynedd must contact the Admissions Office at (215) 646-8815 or through the website to discuss in more detail this admissions process, which requires all materials listed above. Transfer students will take an alternate exam in order to qualify for admission, which will be scheduled on an individual basis with the Admissions Office.

CAMPUS VISIT 8th graders and students interested in transferring are encouraged to spend the day at Gwynedd. Visitation is optional, with dates available from September to December 2019.

Getting to Gwynedd is easier for students to access than ever before, by car, bus, train, or private shuttle! Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School is conveniently situated in suburban Montgomery County and adjoins the neighboring campus of Gwynedd Mercy University. Students arrive each day from various school districts throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties. All current information can be found at gmahs.org/community/transportation.

Train: Getting to Gwynedd is easier than ever for students who never thought Gwynedd could be a high school option! Campus is located just minutes away from the Gwynedd Valley train station on SEPTA’s Lansdale/Doylestown line. Gwynedd is pleased to offer a private shuttle to and from the train station to campus.

The FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment program that we use, allows us to make data-driven award decisions based on financial needs. All information from FACTS remains confidential. Any interested or returning families must apply for financial aid each year using the online FACTS application, (there is a processing fee). When filling out the application, please use your name as it appears on your tax return.

Private Shuttle NEW : Just 10 miles from Gwynedd's campus, a new shuttle location will offer a quick and easy way to get to and from our school from the Chestnut Hill area! We will work with families to coordinate pickup and drop off location for students who would otherwise be unable to attend due to transportation conflicts. This exciting new offering will allow students both in the Chestnut Hill section of the city and beyond to receive transportation to and from Gwynedd for a fixed fee.

FAQs Is Financial Aid automatically renewed each year?

Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School requires families receiving financial aid to reapply and provide up-to-date supporting documentation each year. Students receiving financial aid must be in good standing as stated in our financial policy.

Who will have access to my financial statements?

All the information related to the parents’ financial circumstances will be treated confidentially by the Financial Aid Committee.

What does financial aid cover?

Financial aid is applied to tuition only. Financial aid is not available for new student fees, activity fees, textbooks, uniforms, lunches, etc.

I am a divorced parent. Is my former spouse required to submit a separate application?

Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School believes that parents share the obligation to pay for the educational expenses of their children. It is the responsibility of the custodial parent to ask the non-custodial parent to complete the FACTS application.

The Financial Aid Committee will consider the assets of both natural parents.

THE VALUE OF A MERCY EDUCATION Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School is for girls from families who put a on education. We recognize that sending your daughter to Gwynedd is a financial commitment that we work to ease if possible with scholarships and financial aid. However, think of a Mercy education as a lifelong investment that will pay off in your daughter’s success in college, career, and life.

In addition, long-term research shows that an all-girls education is an empowering and transformative experience. Girls at Gwynedd are free to pursue more leadership opportunities and new learning experiences with less distractions.

At Gwynedd, we make sure our girls are the central focus, and we work to infuse Mercy as a priceless added value to the college preparatory experience.

SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are offered to students who take the Entrance-Scholarship Exam that is administered at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School on Saturday, October 05 or Sunday, October 20, 2019 and are renewable for all four years.

ACADEMIC

LEGACY

Candidates for academic scholarships should exhibit excellence in academics and have completed the entire application process. We offer one full academic scholarship with a variety of other meritbased academic scholarships.

The Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School Alumnae Association funds a scholarship that is open to students with familial relationships to Gwynedd graduates and/or current students (i.e. child, sibling, grandchild, stepchild, niece or cousin).

MUSIC Music scholarships are awarded to students who exhibit excellence in vocal performance, piano, or any instrument through an audition. These scholarship recipients make music their top priority as they hone their skills and contribute to Gwynedd’s music program. The ideal candidates will follow the audition guidelines.

ART Art Scholarships are awarded to students who exhibit excellence in an array of art media. These students are an integral part of the art program at Gwynedd. Each student must bring their art portfolio to the interview.

One Legacy Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming member of the Class of 2024. In order to qualify for the Legacy Scholarship, students must fill out a separate application (available online), have her character reference, demonstrate financial need by filling out the Financial Aid application, and commit to perform a minimum of twenty (20) hours of service activities per year.

At Gwynedd Mercy, we were taught the Five Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy, and we have each been given a proper understanding of what it means to stand up for women, immigrants, people of color, victims of violence, and the environment. When I began my high school education in freshman year, I did not know how history, a study of the past, could possibly connect to my own future.

Now, as I am about to major that subject in college, I have seen the much broader purpose for studying the past in great detail. Through Gwynedd, I have learned how each minority influenced the progress of society, how the study of medicine and technology greatly advanced all civilizations, how math landed men on the moon, and how war was sometimes not the answer. In other words, Gwynedd used the medium of its education program to get its students to think about how we treated, currently treat, and will treat other people.

• For the 6th consecutive year, music students have earned top placement in PMEA District, Region and All State Music Festivals, as well as All Catholic Band and Orchestra.

• Music students have been accepted to prestigious summer study programs at Oberlin Conservatory, Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory and University of Delaware in recent years.

• Gwynedd Mercy Chorale was invited to sing at the Academy of Music with the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia in December 2018.

• During the 2018-19 school year, Music students hosted Gwynedd’s first-ever Coffee House events, with proceeds benefitting Play On, Philly!, a program dedicated to music education in underserved communities in Philadelphia.

Art Department Highlights • Art Scholar Nell Flanigan ‘19 is attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) as a design major. Nell is the recipient of the Dorothy Hutton Trainer Graduation Award. Nell’s pen and ink painting will be on display in the Gwynedd Alumnae Gallery. Nell is also the recipient of the Women’s Club of Whitpain Art Scholarship.

• Art Scholars Ella Fall’20 and Isabella Trotter’20 placed in the Women’s Club of Whitpain art contest. Olivia Carton also placed in the art contest and went on to the district level for third place.

GWYNEDD GLIMPSES ROWING

MULTI-SPORT TURF COMPLEX

Gwynedd welcomes our inaugural crew program to our inventory of award winning sports program. The 2018 fall season will start off with 10 ergs, 3-8’s and 24’s boats to assist our experienced and new rowers to the river during competition. The Monarchs will be led by seasoned and title- winning Executive Head Crew Coach, Bill Ernst. For additional program details and regatta schedule, visit gmahs.org/crew.

The first of a multi-phase athletic enhancement initiative, Gwynedd has added a state-of-theart synthetic turf field and an enhanced natural grass field to the Multi-sport Turf Complex. With these additions, Gwynedd endeavors to provide a consistent, year-round, all-weather playing and running surface, improve student-athlete safety, and enable improved athletic performance.

ROBOTICS CLUB

THE CATHERINE LEARNING PROGRAM

Our ‘Robotics’ club provides an opportunity for our students to master STEM skills, learning and using sophisticated software, hardware, and power tools as they build and compete with a robot of their own design. The Robotics Club allows students to improve teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills as they compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments.

The Catherine Learning Program of Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School is an academic support service for a unique group of college-bound students with documented learning differences in reading, writing and math, and/or attention issues, organizational difficulties, or memory processing problems. This specialized program to address a range of student needs, and named for Mercy foundress, Catherine McAuley, incorporates key ingredients to assist a student in reaching her full potential. The students have a scheduled period each day where they develop individualized strategies for academic success.

STUDENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Gwynedd offers a hands-on work experience program providing professional internship opportunities in a variety of areas including: business, engineering, marketing and communications, and technology. All interns have the opportunity to learn more about a particular field or industry, apply knowledge learned in the classroom, gain valuable work experience, decide if this is the right path for them, develop and build upon skills, all before graduating high school. Interns are also awarded an internship stipend for college tuition.

The goal of the program is to help each student understand her own learning difference and style.

In addition, the learning specialists, in collaboration with all teachers, provide remediation and compensatory strategies to help the student become an independent learner.

MINISTRY & SERVICE

SCHOOL COUNSELING

Gwynedd’s student-centered, rotating daily scheduling breaks through traditional or block formats to provide more innovative educational programming and increased quality of our students’ time. Extended period days allow time to explore subject in-depth; from conducting labs to engaging in collaborative or interdisciplinary learning, exploring off-campus academic opportunities or passioned-based learning opportunities. A “flex time” built into daily schedules allows students the ability and independence to strategize and prioritize their focus. The scheduling also allows student athletes the ability to play and complete in away games without repeatedly missing class time.

University in Erie, PA and the Young Leaders’ Pilgrimage held in Dublin, Ireland. There students learned more about their Mercy roots while building their leadership skills to improve the communities around us.

The goal of the Counseling Center is to advance the spiritual, academic, emotional, and social development of each student. There are two Counseling Departments within the Counseling Center.

There were two week-long service trips over this past summer— one group worked with Catholic Heart Workcamp and did their service in Boston, MA and the other group worked with Mission 850 and did service in Panama City, FL, helping to give aid to the Gulf Region after the effects of Hurricane Michael.

The School Counseling program at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School seeks to foster each student’s personal growth and development.

We collaborate with the student in becoming fully emerged in the Gwynedd community and all that it has to offer. Our goal is to help each student find success in high school and in the future. Counselors work with students and families to provide academic coaching, emotional support, goal setting, and problem-solving strategies. Counselors meet regularly with students individually, through small group settings, and in consultation with faculty and parents. The School Counseling Department provides programming to students in alignment with the health awareness themes per month.

MINISTRY AND SERVICE What makes a Mercy girl? The spirit of a Mercy girl is rooted in service—showing love and compassion to all those around us in an attempt to make the world a better place than how we found it. It is of no surprise that service thrives at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School. Here’s what has happened in Gwynedd in 2018-2019.

Groups of students attended two leadership conferences in 2018-2019, the first annual Conference of Mercy Student Leaders held at Mercyhurst

For the George Valentine Auction & Raffle, Ministry & Service’s biggest fundraiser of the year, students, faculty, and staff donated 70 items to be auctioned and raffled off. Those items helped raise over $4,600 which were donated to Mercy Focus on Haiti, Mercy Hospice, and a domestic abuse shelter in Philadelphia.

Although Gwynedd Mercy Academy High does not have a service requirement, there were over 900 acts of service completed by the students, faculty, and staff which amassed over 4,300 hours of service! Gwynedd girls do not serve out of a schoolmanufactured obligation; they serve because it is who we are!

FUTURE MONARCHS Come learn more about Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School at our: MO RN IN GS AT MERCY

Spend a few hours and meet the Director of Enrollment Management and her team, talk to current Gwynedd students, go on a tour of “The Academy” while class is in session, and participate in a Q & A session. These sessions will run from January to May, and are open to 6th and 7th graders and their parents. Online registration will be available in December 2019 EVENI NG TOURS

Evening Tours are the same events as Morning Tours, except that they are held in the evenings to accommodate families where both parents work. Families are divided into small groups for a more personalized tour experience, aiming to address specific interests and curiosities of group participants. Evening Tours will not be scheduled as regularly as Morning Tours. Please be sure to check our Admissions Calendar for scheduled dates!

The Accelerated Scholars Program will provide high achieving seventh graders the opportunity for early admittance—apply, be accepted, and enroll—into Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School at the start of the eighth grade. Seventh grade students who take our seventh grade practice test, score really well and show a strong desire in attending Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School will be invited to participate. The Accelerated Scholars Program will also offer academic scholarships.

Accelerated Scholars who elect to participate in our early admittance program will be required to complete the ASP Application process.

GWYNEDD SUMMIT Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School hosts an annual two-day leadership conference in midJuly known as the Gwynedd Summit.

The Summit is free of charge and open to all 7th grade students who take Gwynedd’s 7th Grade Practice Test in the spring, and who are interested in attending the school. This exciting twoday event is filled with opportunities for students to engage in meaningful conversation with accomplished Gwynedd alumnae, participate in hands-on activities, and learn about various career paths through interactive sessions.
