INFRASTRUCTURAL URBANISM

Public Space & Urban Design | Pittsburgh, PA Fourth Year Design Studio | Fall 2018 Located in the historic Strip District of Pittsburgh, the David McCullough Bridge (16th Street Bridge), is a historic structure that is currently used as an overhang for informal parking. This bridge has great potential to become a civic space in the coming years, due to the current and future development happening around the site and throughout the Strip.

The design combines civic and leisure spaces with passive and active recreation spaces. In addition to serving as a destination, the site will also be a new thoroughfare for cyclists and pedestrians, providing a carfree way to access the riverfront and Strip. Featuring an unprogrammed pavillion, updated and safer streetscapes, movable benches, heavily planted areas, lawn, exercise equipment, a skateboard halfpipe, bocce court, urban soccer field, and kayak rentals, this design strives to provide activity to a diverse range of people. In addition to those ammenities, there are various other small scale experiences to be had, from walking the plaza to finding a nice place to sit.

RECLAIMING URBAN ECOSYSTEMS Infrastructure & Urban Design Third Year Studio | Fall 2017

State College, PA, is a small urban area in Central Pennsylvania, within the Spring Creek Watershed. The watershed contains many high quality streams, which are negatively impacted by State College’s urban sprawl, impervious surfaces, and outdated gray infrastructure. This design looks at ways to retrofit existing infrastructure to not only lessen the environmental impacts of the urbanized area, but to also increase greenspace. My approach involved selecting different types of stormwater management interventions, designing prototypes for them, and mapping/ planning where these interventions would work best.

Project included a brief site design, followed by extensive construction documentation. Focusing on landscape materiality and fabrication, this studio was based around the relationship of design and implementation, and how the two are inherently related.

FIBER OP[BRICKS]

Materials Exploration Third Year Materials Studio | Fall 2017 ‘Fiber Op[Bricks]’ is a material exploration, done in collaboration with Bryce Brucker and Frank Mader. First, we picked a material, which was concrete. Once we selected concrete as our material, we wanted to experiment with light and translucency, and see how we could play with the idea of getting light through the material. Through various rounds of rigorous testing of different translucent materials, such as plexiglass and homemade bioplastic, we determined that the best option for translucency is fiber optic cables. From that conclusion, we tested different ways to pour concrete with fiber optic cables in the pour.

All team members contributed to the concept work, design and construction equally. Page 26 images were shot by Frank Mader, and page 27 images are my own.

LIVING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Mixed Use Development | State College, PA Third Year Studio | Spring 2018 ‘Living Outside the Box’ is a master-planned community designed for forward thinking individuals, and challenges the “normals” of the American housing market. This design looks to embrace and build off of the rich history that the former mobile home site contains. The design emphasizes and incorporates existing site conditions such as existing trees and topography, to minimize construction impact, and maximize canopy cover. The existing roads and housing arrangements incorporated topography, so building off of this historic network can not only pay homage to the sites history, but also preserve much of the canopy cover.

The proposed design features a streetscape facelift along the main road the site is adjacent to, a bus stop, bike fix station, retail space and a planted buffer to offset housing units from the main road. Inside the development, there is a community garden, hammock grove, pollinator garden, meadows and other planted areas, lawn space, and a community building featuring meeting area and start up space.

Campus Plaza | University Park, PA Second Year Studio | Fall 2016 Plaza design featuring linear seating, unprogrammed lawn space, and an artful rainwater design. Seating runs perpindicular to the main circulation path off site, meant to delineate movement and draw people into the site.

An elevated pathway that moves seamlessly over a rain garden is meant to educate users about stormwater management, while not imposing on their movement through the site.

301 N. MARKET

Urban Design | Selinsgrove, PA Fourth Year Design Studio | Spring 2019 301 North Market St. and its adjacent 200 Block of North Market St. present an opportunity to create a vibrant community destination for Selinsgrove residents, Susquehanna students, and visitors. The 200 Block contains underused space, along with four existing buildings.

The programmatic elements of those four buildings are emphasized, incorporated, and enhanced in the new design. In addition, five new, mixed-use buildings are being proposed on the site. This is aimed to increase economic revenue of the town, provide additional shopping and dining opportunities, and enhance N Market Street.

Designed features of the site include a treed plaza, gently sloped lawn space, un-programmed tree bosque that can double as event space for the Selinsgrove Inn, a play area for younger people, a bridge across Weiser Run that connects to W Spruce St, and safer pedestrian crossings of N Market Street. The 301 N Market distillery site features an improved streetscape, small entry plaza with seating and trees, indoor eating and drinking area, a functioning kitchen and distillery, service access, and an outdoor, semi-enclosed area featuring high tables and an overhead exposed steel structure, which was part of the original structure.

Historic Hydrologies: Re-Introducing the Hidden Hydrology of Bad Godesberg Urban Design | Bonn, Germany Fifth Year Design Studio | Fall 2019

Hydrologic Histories examines the Godesberger Bach, which flows 16 km from agricultural land South-West of the Bad Godesberg core, through the urban core, amongst residential neighborhoods, and eventually into the Rhein River. This stream has influenced older developments, with roads and buildings conforming to its curvilinear and natural flow further upstream, but in the core of Bad Godesberg, the stream was buried in a culvert, hiding it from the public, and effectively erasing its existance in the landscape. This project aims to partially reveal the stream, while rethinking existing plaza spaces, pedestrian connections, and urban experience. Light and dark pavers provide visual interest and the ability to meander freely through the space, while the exposed stream provides micro-ecological benefits and high aesthetic value. The re-introduction of this natural system will help tell the bigger story of the history of how Bad Godesberg has evolved over time- from a bath & spa destination in the mid-1800‘s known for its pristine water, to its modern day status as a diverse neighborhood in Bonn.
